near & realistic headcanon: i am of the belief that near is physically disabled and that’s why he’s sitting 99% of the time. i like to think he uses mobility devices which we just don’t see when he wants to get around on his own, but he … doesn’t generally want to.

near & not necessarily realistic but hilarious headcanon: he actually does dress like mello (as per the design swap) in his free time. he’s just wearing those plain white clothes to look professional

near & heartcrushing headcanon: i think he actually looked up to mello and wanted to be his friend. mello has so many qualities that near lacks and seems to admire to at least some degree (bravery, quick action, and so on.) near really does not coddle people, though. he couldn’t even if he wanted to — he doesn’t have any practise in doing so, and he’s not the sort of person who’d compromise his own personality for anything. he expects everyone to figure things out on their own and take complete responsibility for their own actions & emotions. so he couldn’t do anything about it when mello misinterpreted this admiration as condescension.

near & disregarding canon headcanon: HONESTLY i have basically zero complaints about primary canon manga!near. he’s perfect. what’s to dislike. i don’t love his characterization in the short stories, though. they’re okay, i get the idea behind it, but the idea of near being ground down and losing the intensity of his morality is depressing to me in a way i don’t enjoy. idk!! it makes sense and has great thematic resonance but i don’t like it.
