Edit
Hellboy, or "Anung Un Rama" as he was called, was conceived on October 5,[1] 1617, the day his birth-mother, Sarah Hughes, a human woman, was on her deathbed. In life, Sarah was a witch who gained her powers from being a consort of the archdemon, Azzael, an Archduke of Hell, and Hellboy's "biological" father. Taking Sarah's body to hell when she attempted to repent on her deathbed within a church in East Bromwich, England, Azzael burned her away so their child would be born, and chopped off the newborn's right hand to replace it with the "Right Hand of Doom", a relic tied to the Ogdru Jahad. When the other princes of Hell learned of his actions, Azzael sent his half-demon child away while he was stripped of his powers and imprisoned in ice (like Lucifer in Dante's Divine Comedy).
The child is eventually summoned to Earth in the final months of World War II by the "Mad Monk" Grigori Rasputin on Tarmagant Island, off the coast of Scotland, having been commissioned by the Nazis to change the tide of a losing war ("Project Ragna Rok"). As a direct result of this ritual, the child appears on Earth in a fireball at what remains of the ruined Bromwich Church on December 23, 1944. Proving not to be a devil, in the traditional sense, but a devil-like creature, the child was dubbed "Hellboy" by Professor Trevor "Broom" Bruttenholm.[2]
Taken by the United States Armed Forces to an Air Force base in New Mexico, Hellboy is raised by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm in as normal a home environment as possible (and as a Catholic), and the United States Army where the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) a private organization dedicated to combating occult threats, begins. Due to the success of his first mission in 1952, Hellboy is granted "honorary human" status by the United Nations and becomes a member of the BPRD as the "world's greatest paranormal investigator".[3] As such, Hellboy interacts regularly with humans, primarily law enforcement officials, the military, and various "scholars of the weird", most of whom are not presented as overtly reacting to his strange appearance.
As an adult, having matured physically within years yet aging slowly with a teenaged mind, Hellboy becomes the primary agent for the BPRD, alongside other human and quasi-human agents that include Kate Corrigan, a professor of folklore at New York University; Abe Sapien, an amphibian humanoid (Ichthyo sapiens); and Liz Sherman, a young pyrokinetic. Things change dramatically for Hellboy during the events of Seed of Destruction when he searches for Professor Bruttenholm after he disappears during an expedition in the Arctic. He finds his adopted father only to witness his death at the hands of a Lovecraftian frog monster. The search takes Hellboy, Abe, and Liz to the Cavendish Hall mansion, which is a trap established by Rasputin to lure Hellboy into an embrace of his own "destiny", with the assistance of Sadu-Hem; one of the spawn of the Ogdru Jahad. Controlled by the spirit of one of the ancestral Cavendish men, Abe impales Rasputin. Liz's firestorm then incinerates Rasputin's body alongside Sadu-Hem's and destroys Cavendish Hall. Soon after, during a visit to Bromwich Church, Hellboy gets a glimpse of his conception 300+ years ago and learns he has two human half-siblings; a nun and a priest whose spirits haunt the church after their deaths, attempting to stop Azzael from claiming Sarah.
During the events of Hellboy: Wake the Devil, Hellboy's journey of self-discovery leads him to Romania to investigate the theft of an ancient box containing the corpse of Vladimir Giurescu, a Napoleonic officer who was, in fact, a vampire before he was "killed" on the order of a fearful Adolf Hitler. The culprit of the theft is revealed to be Ilsa Haupstein, one of the surviving members of Project Ragna Rok, who was revived from suspended animation and then aided in Giurescu's resurrection. Finding Castle Giurescu after splitting up with the other search groups, Hellboy learns that the source of Giurescu's rebirth is the ancient goddess Hecate. Though Hellboy destroys Hecate's original body, he faces her again after Rasputin unintentionally provides her with Ilsa's iron-maiden encased body. Hecate swallows Hellboy, but he returns to his own reality after he denounces the dark purpose he was born to perform.
Hellboy later learns that Liz is dying after losing her powers when she accidentally revived a homunculus while searching another location for Giurescu, finding Roger in the events of Hellboy: Almost Colossus as he convinces the homunculus to save Liz's life. Following the events of Hellboy: The Right Hand of Doom, gaining insight about his stone hand and being referenced as a harbinger of the Apocalypse, Hellboy is accompanied by Abe to hunt down the warlock Igor Bromhead in Box Full of Evil. But it turned out to be a trap conducted by Bromhead and the demon Ualac to capture Hellboy, using his True Name, Anung Un Rama, to restrain him, so that the latter can claim Hellboy's normally invisible Crown of the Apocalypse to increase their power. But this act, however, proves to be counter-productive, as it allows Hellboy to no-longer be controlled by his true name, Anung Un Rama (as one of the translations of this name is, lit. "and upon his brow is set a crown of flame"; with the theft of his crown, the name is no longer accurate), and he kills Ualac's mortal body before the demon and the crown is taken to Hell by the archdemon, Astaroth, who is later revealed to be Hellboy's paternal uncle.
In the aftermath of Hellboy: Conqueror Worm, assisted by the ghost of Lobster Johnson, Roger, and Abe, a disillusioned Hellboy resigns from the Bureau before it later gains new agents in Johann Kraus, the spirit of a German medium kept in a containment suit; and Captain Ben Daimio, a special operations soldier that became an Olmec were-jaguar. From there, Hellboy decides to find out the truth of his existence once and for all. But, as revealed in Hellboy: Strange Places, Hellboy ends up being stranded on an island where he inadvertently resurrected an ancient mystic who gained knowledge of the secret history of the creation of Ogdru Jahad and the Right Hand of Doom.
6 years later, as Hellboy: Darkness Calls opens, Hellboy's search takes him to England where he finds himself in the middle of a power vacuum caused by Bromhead incapacitating Hecate in Italy. Refusing to serve the witches as their king, Hellboy ends up in the dimension of Baba Yaga, a witch whom he encountered in the past and happens to be an ally of Rasputin's. Managing to defeat Baba Yaga's champion Koshchei, Hellboy returns to his reality and is led to Bromhead after he became monstrous and in agony from his attempt to take Hecate's powers for his own. Hellboy gives Bromhead a merciful death before returning to England during the events of Hellboy: The Wild Hunt where he encounters Alice Monaghan, a young woman he saved as a baby from a fairy named Gruagach who has revived the lunatic sorceress Nimue to fill the void left by Hecate.
During that time, Hellboy encounters the spirit of Morgana le Fay who reveals to Hellboy both the names of his parents and that Sarah Hughes was her descendant, which names Hellboy as the last living heir to Arthur Pendragon and the rightful king of England.[4] But as he also learns from Astaroth that he is destined to kill Satan and become the new King of Hell, Hellboy is reluctant to wield Excalibur (which in his hands becomes a flaming sword) and the army of undead British nobility amassed to face Nimue's army. Therefore, enlisting Baba Yaga's assistance with his eye as payment for the injury he did to her in their first meeting, Hellboy decides to face Nimue one-on-one in the events of Hellboy: The Storm and the Fury. But in the aftermath of his battle with Nimue, who was possessed by Ogdru Jahad at the time, Hellboy is killed by the witch in her final moments. As revealed in Hellboy in Hell, Hellboy ends up trapped in Hell, where he encounters what's left of his demonic kin and the souls of the damned, and ultimately comes to terms with the destiny he has been shrugging off his whole life. Hellboy later returns in the mini-series BPRD: The Devil You Know, revived and joining Liz and Abe in the final arc of the series. After defeating Rasputin again, he and Hecate see the fall of the Ogdru Jahad and get back the Right Hand of Doom from the Osiris Club, killing them. Despite their efforts, however, Ragnarok is fulfilled and most of humanity is destroyed. In the end, Hellboy and Hecate fuse together to create a new world on Earth

Cinematic Comic Characters Ranked! (Year 2004) Part I
After two consecutive years of multiple Comic movies, 2004 took it a bit slow with only five movie releases. Blade returns one last time in Blade: Trinity as well as Spider-Man in Spider-Man 2! We also get a spin on two cult classics with AVP: Alien vs Predator. Finally we also get the debut of two comic characters in Hellboy and Catwoman. Let’s start off the list with #40 through #21!!!
*SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ALL HIGHLIGHTED MOVIES ABOVE*
Cameo Appreciation: Stan Lee (Spider-Man 2) Another blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo, but it's the first time Stan Lee saves someone, as he pulls a girl away from the path of falling debris as Spider-Man faces off against Doc Ock.
Cameo Appreciation: Ben Parker and Norman Osborn/Green Goblin (Spider-Man 2) Two father figures that both died in the last film come back as illusions(?) to the two people who inspired them the most. Uncle Ben returned to help guide Peter as he decides on whether or not to continure as Spider-Man or lead a different life. Norman comes back to haunt his son into becoming the new Green Goblin and to convince him to go after Peter and seek revenge.
40. Ilsa Haupstein (Hellboy)
"Hell will hold no surprises for us."
I forgot this girl was in this movie every time she wasn't on screen. She doesn't even really do anything but is extremely loyal to her man. She always has this big hammer around but we never really see it in action either. Anyways, when the big bad demon is released she accepts death pretty well and dies with her man.
39. Dr. Edgar Vance and Chief Martin Vreede (Blade: Trinity)
"There's nothing stopping them now."
These two were familiars who would do their vampires dirty work while the sun was out. They both successfully drug Blade for their masters but that's about it for their success. Vance ends up getting drained dry by Drake and Vreede gets shot down by Blade after he shuts down their human farm.
38. John Jameson (Spiderman-2)
"The world is full of big jerks."
It's not that John was the nice guy that finished last, it's just that he was the wrong guy. I'm sorry at the end of the day if a girl isn't feeling you, it does not matter how successful you are at life. Mary Jane figures this out when she kisses him in their apartment one last time. It does suck that he was left at the alter, he was a decent guy he didn't deserve that.
37. George Hedare (Catwoman)
Tumblr media
"Don't speak. Consider it a condition in our relationship."
Throughout the whole movie we're played to think George-a misogynistic, arrogant, piece of scum-is the villain. Turns out he's not, but he's still a shitty person. Just because he runs a fancy makeup company lets him believe he can do who and whatever he wants. This ends up being his downfall because he doesn't even notice his wife is plotting against him until she shoots him dead. Can't say I was upset.
36. Ray Cumberland (Blade: Trinity)
"Don't fuck with my thing."
Ray leads a new enemy against Blade, the police force. After Blade gets recorded killing a human, Ray tries to take him down. Of course he doesn't believe in vampires and for most of the movie nothing bursts his bubble of ignorance. It isn't until the end when he thinks he's caught Blade's body but it transforms back to Drake's corpse right in front of Ray's eyes.
35. Ophelia (Catwoman)
"Catwomen are not contained by the rules of society."
Ophelia is just weird cat lady who has all this knowledge about the history of Catwomen, women gifted with abilities of a cat. She owns a bunch of cats, to no one's surprise, including Midnight, the cat that has the power to grant women like Patience with the ability to become Catwoman.
34. Rosalie Octavius (Spider-Man 2)
Tumblr media
"I love that brilliant mind of his."
As soon as I saw Rosalie I knew she was going to die. With Otto clearly being the villain but appearing as a nice guy, I knew something drastic was going to happen that would push him over the edge. That something was killing Rosalie, his brilliant wife that supports all his ambitions. And just to rub salt to the wound, we had to see her die because of his mistake when trying to work his new invention.
33. Harry Osborn (Spider-Man 2)
"I'm ruined! I have nothing left-except Spider-Man!"
Y'all know I hated Harry in the first Spider-Man movie and my hatred for him only grew in this one. He's just a big douche that can't get over the death of a father that only showed him the bare minimum of interest. He's a dick to Peter and ends up finding out he's Spider-Man. After more self-loathing, he ends up discovering his father's secret room where he hid the Green Goblin. I cannot wait to see where this takes us *notice my sarcasm* in the next film.
32. Agent Clay (Hellboy)
Tumblr media
"Well, come on in. Meet the rest of the family."
There's a running gag about his new hair piece looking like it would on a doll and it's so true. Hellboy lowkey fake for acting like it looked good, a real friend would've had him fix it asap. He's apart of the mission to destroy the hellhound eggs that goes completely wrong. He squares off against zombie/not zombie, Kroenen. And since Kroenen can't die Clay's bullets do nothing as he gets stabbed repeatedly. He somehow doesn't die then and there and his fate in the hospital is never revealed after but it's predicted he wasn't going to make it.
31. Sommerfield, Zoe, Hedges and Dex (Blade: Trinity)
"My friends are coming to kill you."
The members of the Nightstalkers, a new group of vampire hunters. Blade says they have no idea what they're doing and he's absolutely right. Aside from Sommerfield, who ends up making the virus that will kill all vampires, they don't really add anything to Blade's already impressive arsenal. When Drake attacks their hideout he kills Sommerfield, Hedges, and Dex easily and then kidnaps Sommerfield's daughter, Zoe. She's a brave one, especially at her age, not showing an ounce of fear while she's being held captive and even courageously telling Drake he's going to die before she gets rescued.
30. Sally (Catwoman)
"I must be in my cubicle alone."
Shy people like Patience need friends like Sally. Friends who will say the dirty things they're thinking out loud and will drag the shy ones around to get into some trouble. That's what she is, and I appreciate that. She's also the first person to get sick from using their job's new beauty cream, giving the first signs to the movie's overall plot. In the end she ends up with her steaming doctor so she's winning.
29. Jarko Grimwood (Blade: Trinity)
"Hey, dickface. You seen my dog?"
The muscle of the vampires who owns a vampire Pomeranian. If that isn't weird enough the dude is always at the receiving end of King's jokes and a rivalry easily starts between them. He's basically a giant toddler and ends up getting his ass beat the entire movie until King finally puts a bomb in his mouth, killing him.
28. Graeme Miller, Maxwell Stafford, Adele Rousseu, and Mark Verheiden (Alien vs. Predator)
"I'd rater have one and not need it then need and not have one."
So obviously the only reason we had a bunch of crew members in this movie was so there would be more chances for us to see all the different ways the aliens and predators could kill. Out of all the minor characters I found these four to be the most important. First we got Adele, the only female besides Alexa who also makes a very good point when it comes to carrying her gun. However, homegirl doesn't appear to know how to use it when a bunch of creepy spider aliens show up and lay alien eggs down her throat. Graeme and Mark are two guys constantly arguing because Mark thinks Graeme is just a useless scientist, which is correct, honestly. Despite Mark having two broken legs, I think he would've put up a good fight against the first alien had it not been for the other two jumping in. Graeme meets his end when he successfully gets a gun but wastes all the bullets on one spider alien, despite the fact that there's several more about to hatch and take over his body. Finally, there's Maxwell. He's Weyland's assistant and kind of an asshole? Like the whole time he's just a dick to Alexa for no reason so I didn't feel bad at all when a predator shows up and sticks a spear through him.
27. J. Jonah Jameson (Spider-Man 2)
Tumblr media
"I want Spider-Man!"
The famous New York editor who thinks the only real story is the one he tells himself. Despite the fact that he clearly does not like Spider-Man, Jameson is still really entertaining throughout the movie. He's also Peter's most reliable source of income during his troubled times and he doesn't abuse that either. He really is one of those people you kind of have to accept isn't going to change.
26. Danica Talos (Blade: Trinity)
Tumblr media
"Now we're getting somewhere, my pet."
This girl was so annoying and unnecessary. She reminded me of the little girl from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the spoiled one who ended up being a rotten egg. She likes to toy with people, especially King, but gets pissy if they clap back, especially King. When she's torturing the poor guy she ends up getting hit with the virus for vampires and dies, all while King mocks her as he gets away.
25. Grigori Rasputin (Hellboy)
"You will never understand what kind of power you have."
The main bad guy who's only good at summoning demon hounds that can't die and giving speeches about his time served in a hell dimension. Because of his time sent there he's really eager to get a portal between hell and Earth open so that Earth is destroyed once and for all. He really should've had a backup plan since his main plan revolved around our hero, Hellboy, betraying everyone and opening the portal. When it fails the demon living in him comes out and kills him and his forgettable bae.
24. Charles Bishop Weyland (Alien vs. Predator)
"I need this."
Weyland is the reason everyone is at an underground pyramid full of aliens. He's a rich explorer who just wants to be remembered by something great he did just before he dies of whatever sickness he has. The Predator tries to spare him-it can sense he's dying-but Weyland ain't no punk and lights the thing on fire. The Predator isn't a punk either though and ends up killing him just after that.
23. Laurel Hedare (Catwoman)
"I'm a woman, I'm used to doing things I don't want to do."
At first I want to feel sorry for Laurel. She has insecurities due to her husband cheating on her with the younger women who literally stole her job. It sucks, but its really hard to feel sympathy when she knowingly tries to make a beauty product that will eventually kill its consumers public just so she can keep making money. She also kills anyone who tries to stop her, including her cheating husband. Her skins also super tough as a side effect for constantly using the cream so she can actually do damage when she fights Catwoman. She can also fall off a building a lot faster and keep her body intact when she hits the ground.
22. Tom Manning (Hellboy)
"You never, ever light a cigar that way."
Tom is the director of the FBI and it's mainly his job to deny the existence of Hellboy to the public even when Hellboy is seen fighting a demon hound in the middle of a very public carnival. He doesn't get along with Hellboy because he thinks he's reckless and lacks respect to higher figures of authority and he's absolutely right in both cases. However, after they each work together to bring down Kroenen they bond for the very first time over cigars.
21. May Parker (Spider-Man 2)
"Everybody loves a hero."
At the beginning of the movie I was definitely getting 'Aunt May is going to die' vibes, which sucks because Peter just lost Uncle Ben in the last film. As movie progressed it was obvious that Aunt May's arc would be about her living on post-Uncle Ben's death, with her main struggle being able to pay for the house Peter grew up in. I also like that she didn't instantly forgive Peter for what happened to Uncle Ben. She didn't blame him, but she was also hurt and just needed to be alone. Her being Doctor Octopus's hostage was a bit comical though.

Hellboy (2004), a review
(Disclaimer: The following is a non-profit unprofessional blog post written by an unprofessional blog poster. All purported facts and statement are little more than the subjective, biased opinion of said blog poster. In other words, don’t take anything I say too seriously.) Hellboy, a review
Tumblr media
The year is 2004. Movie Studios are suddenly aware of the fact that superhero movies are good for business and are scrambling to get any comic book rights to make lucrative film deals out of them. Fresh off the success of Blade II, director Guillermo Del Toro rallies an eager crowd of fans, asking if actor Ron Perlman would be a suitable Hellboy. Among the cries of an overwhelming “Yes!”, Del Toro secures a movie deal with Revolution Studios and gets the movie adaptation Hellboy greenlit.   In 1944, with the help of Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin, the Nazis build a dimensional portal off the coast of Scotland and intend to free the Ogdru Jahad—monstrous entities imprisoned in deep space—to aid them in defeating the Allies. Rasputin opens the portal with the aid of his disciples, Ilsa von Haupstein and ObersturmbannfĂŒhrer Karl Ruprecht Kroenen, member of the Thule Society and Adolf Hitler's top assassin. An Allied team is sent to destroy the portal, guided by a young scientist named Trevor Bruttenholm, who is well-versed in the occult. The German team is killed and the portal is destroyed—in the process absorbing Rasputin—while Haupstein and Kroenen escape. The Allied team discovers that an infant demon with a right hand of stone came through the portal; they dub him "Hellboy" and Bruttenholm adopts him.
youtube
With Blade, X-Men and Spider-man (and to a lesser extent, even the critically panned Daredevil) kicking off the Superhero Boom, Del Toro’s Hellboy helped solidify it and helped explore some of the more mystical and horror roots. Sixty years later, FBI agent John Myers is transferred to the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) at the request of Bruttenholm, where he meets the adult Hellboy and a psychic, amphibious humanoid named Abe Sapien. He learns that a third BPRD member, Liz Sherman, has recently checked into a mental hospital to protect others from her volatile pyrokinetic abilities. Despite regular visits and coaxing from Hellboy, she is determined not to return. Kroenen and Haupstein resurrect Rasputin in the mountains of Moldova and the three unleash a demon known as Sammael. Guillermo Del Toro’s vision of the Occult, mysticism and the supernatural is on full display here. He manages to imbue Lovecraftian Horror into each and every scene with some of the finest makeup I’ve seen in the business. At times, the film feels more like a horror movie meant to scare and shock you, lighting the subways of New York more like a Rated R monster movie than a PG-13 action flick. While the film uses CGI (effectively, I might add and knows when to use it during the dark), the true star of the show is the make-up team. From Hellboy to Abe to Kroenen, each character make up brings the world to life and for Del Toro to not only imagine the make-up but also direct the actors to perform under it, just makes everything click. Ron Perlman was My Hellboy. The match made in Heaven with Del Toro’s love of makeup effects and Perlman’s ability to act under Heavy prosthetics (one of his earlier acting jobs was playing the Beast in Beauty and the Beast TV show) was already a sealed deal to begin with, but Perlman sells the cigar-smoking, beer-drinking, quip-making, cat loving character to such a degree, it makes me weep with joy. Ron Perlman was Hellboy to me the same way Christopher Reeve was Superman to an entire generation and J.K. Simmons was J. Jonah Jameson to newcomers. Even Doug Jones and Selma Blair deliver great performances here. Selma Blair has always had great range as a performer and acting both as this scared girl afraid of her own destructive capabilities and Hellboy’s love interest, she brings in much more agency than most actresses would in the role. Doug Jones (who would be a mainstay for Del Toro projects such as Pan’s Labyrinth and the Shape of Water), brings great personality into the role of Abe Sapien. And who could forget the Late John Hurt as Bruttenhom, playing a kind father to a rebellious son or Jeffery Tambor as the stern BPRD director who’s sick and tired of covering for Hellboy’s antics. But it’s not all perfect. John Myers was the audience avatar for the movie, i.e. a guy for the audience looks through in order to better comprehend the proceedings and be given exposition from the characters who’ve been there longer than he has. He’s not from any of the comic books and was originally created for the movie. Okay, let’s clear a few things up. It was the early 2000’s, and movie studios were really worried that another Batman & Robin situation would kill their financial prospects, so the producers probably decided to make this bland, milquetoast character to offset the Red devil character and the walking Fishman just to make sure audiences wouldn’t freak out. For the record, I actually like Myers. You do need this walking cipher to be the viewpoint character (at least for the 1st movie in the early 2000’s when Bryan Singer’s X-men was relevant) and for what it’s worth, Rupert Evans does attempt to bring in as much personality he can to the character. (Though for some reason, we have yet another British actor attempting to ape an American accent. What, it’s not enough to be human looking, he also needs a toned down accent?) A lot of fans decried the changes from the source material. Aside from some continuity issues, the main idea that Liz and Hellboy were never love interests but more akin to close friends are among the chief complaints. A lot of fans also didn’t care for the additional humor. Speaking from someone who discovered the film first and the comics second, I can see where the complaints come from.  But, I actually think these changes are welcome additions. Obviously, this was playing to a mainstream crowd, and studio executives are worried they won’t draw in the ticket sales. But Del Toro has a knack for these things and Perlman, despite his Hellboy quipping more than the comic book version, sells every line. Plus, that fight scene in which Hellboy has to save kittens gets me everytime. Even the Liz and Hellboy romance managed to surprisingly move me in a way I didn’t expect. Perlman and Blair have great chemisty and you really do believe than the Hellspawn from another dimension can not only find humanity but love as well.
youtube
The film was a success for the director and actors. While it had a $66 Million Budget and earned $99 Million at the box office, a healthy Video take as well as good word of mouth helped boost the movie. Guillermo Del Toro had 2 mainstream hits under his belt, despite a few mixed reviews (one from Richard Roeper, stating, "I loved about 49 percent of this movie but I hated 51 percent of it so I'm going to give this film thumbs down"). With that in mind, the series would continue its streak with the sequel, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army.

Wake the devil
Tumblr media
HELLBOY: WAKE THE DEVIL JUNE - OCTOBER 1996 BY MIKE MIGNOLA, JAMES SINCLAIR AND DAVE STEWART
SYNOPSIS (FROM HELLBOY WIKIA)
Part One The comic opens on the northern coast of Norway, inside the Arctic Circle, where a Zinco helicopter is landing in front of the castle that was seen as the end of Seed of Destruction. The head of the company, Roderick Zinco, breaks into the castle and is confronted by Karl Kroenen, Ilsa Haupstein and Leopold Kurtz but Zinco explains that he saw Grigori Rasputin, and promises them use everything he has.
One year later, in SoHo, New York City the Nazis kill the curator of a wax museum, Howard Steinman, otherwise known as Hans Ubler. At the B.P.R.D. Headquarters in Fairfield, Connecticut, Tom Manning and Kate Corrigan brief the agents about the life of Vladimir Giurescu and the fact that he could never die because when the full moon shines down on him at Castle Giurescu he heals himself. In 1944, Heinrich Himmler proposed project Vampir Sturm and a Nazi delegation, led by Ilsa Haupstein was sent to recruit Giurescu. After meeting with Giurescu, Hitler ordered the arrest, execution and destruction of the Giurescu family. However, it is possible that reveal the museum curator, could have smuggled Giurescu's body out of Germany before his corpse was burnt. The B.P.R.D. is concerned that someone might try to re-animate Giurescu in his Castle. However, there are three possibilities as to where Castle Giurescu is, so Tom Manning splits the agents into three groups; Hellboy on his own, Abe Sapien with Mr. Clark, and Liz Sherman with Bud Waller and Sidney Leach.
In Romania, Ilsa Haupstein opens the stolen box with Giurescu's corpse and orders the soldiers to take it to a specific room. Meanwile, in Norway, Kurtz and Kroenen watch Ilsa and it is revealed that they are manufacturing their own army. Back in Romania, The agents are all on a plane where Abe Sapien talks to Hellboy about the involvement of Project Ragna Rok because he thinks it's worrying Hellboy. Hellboy jumps out of the plane and his jetpack explodes, crashing Hellboy into Castle Giurescu.

Part Two Ilsa orders Unmensch, a cyborg Nazi, to kill Hellboy and they fight until they both fall through the floor. A flashback to Tarmagant Island, 1944 shows Rasputin ordering Ilsa, Kroenen and Kurtz to go to Norway. In the present, Rasputin appears and tells her to leave the castle and that the next time she sees Giurescu that he will be young again. In the castle, Hellboy wakes up with the Nazi gone, leaving behind only his metal arm.
In a near-by village, an old man tells his daughter to leave with her children and to never come back and that it is "too late" for him to leave.
Tumblr media
Hellboy follows a trace of blood and finds a man eating the Nazi's leg, who reveals that he is Vladimir Giurescu's father, and that it is the goddess Hecate who brings Giurescu back to life. When Hellboy asks where Giurescu is, the man refuses to tell him and Hellboy burns him to death. When Hellboy leaves the room he remembers the old man said something about a moon door and sees a door with a moon shape on it, and inside is the box with the corpse and the three soldier's heads in front. But he is surrounded by ravens who turn into the Women of Thessaly and start attacking him.
Part Three At Castle Giurescu, Hellboy shoots the Women of Thessaly until Giurescu comes out of his box. When Hellboy tries to kill him, Giurescu turns into a raven and Hellboy stabs him. Giurescu falls into a stone coffin and ends up underground. When Hellboy gets there Giurescu is on the floor with the knife in his chest but then he turns into snakes and gets away. After Hellboy leaves the tomb, Hecate brings Giurescu back to life. Rasputin tells Isla about his life and offers Ilsa Haupstein to be reborn, like he was.
In the ruins of Czege Castle, Romania, Liz Sherman, Bud Waller and Sidney Leach find a door which leads to a huge room with a lifeless homunculus inside. Liz touches a hole in his chest but she can't let go and the homunculus comes to life as Liz is transferring her energy into him. Bud shoots her arm to get her free. The homunculus panics, snaps Bud Wallers neck and escapes.

In Norway, Roderick Zinco brings Kroenen the head of Professor Herman von Klempt, so that Kroenen can include von Klempt in their plans. In Romania, at The Monastery of St. Bartholomew, Stephen, the old man from part 2 tells his brother, a priest, that the town will go back to its "old ways" because he can sense Giurescu but his brother doesn't believe him. Back at Castle Giurescu, Hellboy finds a room full of explosives and sets a timer for them to go off in one hour.
Part Four As Hellboy leaves the castle, he is confronted by Hecate in snake form, who tries to get Hellboy to go back to his "old kind" and tells him that he lost himself in humanity. Hellboy and Hecate start fighting as she tells him that he will bring the end of the world and that he cannot escape his own destiny. Hellboy spears her and they both smash through the wall and her skin and flesh burn in the daylight just as the explosives go off and the Castle blows up with Hellboy just outside.

Abe Sapien and Clark report back to B.P.R.D. HQ, from the ruins of Szentes Castle. They found nothing but see a pillar of smoke from Hellboy's location, and are told to go and find Hellboy.
In Romania, the Baba Yaga's servant, Koku, brings Rasputin an Iron Maiden to initiate Ilsa Hapustein's rebirth, she goes into it and is immediately killed. Rasputin tells Koku that he will be back to see Baba Yaga.
Stephen and two other men find Hellboy's body outside the ruins of Castle Giurescu to drive him to the crossroads.
In Norway, von Klempt tempts Kroenen to join him instead of going along with Rasputin's plans but Kurtz gets angry and tries to kill Von Klempt. Kroenen tries to stop Kurtz and ends up stabbing and killing him.
In Romania, Hellboy is chained to a thick wooden pole. Rasputin tells him that he is there to rot.
Part Five Abe Sapien and Clark land in the Romanian village where everyone's house is boarded up, with crosses painted on the doors and windows. They enter the church and see Stephen's brother standing with Hellboy's signal belt in hand. He is unresponsive and when Cark touches his shoulder, the priest's head falls off and the pair fall through the floor. Clark is impaled on a spike, but Abe survives the fall. Rasputin confronts Abe, and threatens that just as Abe once speared him (in Seed of Destruction) so too would he one day spear Abe. The Priest's decapitated head says "Abraham Sapien. Do you hear... sunken bells are tolling for thee. Out of caverns of Num-Yabisc, dark and terrible deep, the ocean is calling her children home."
At the crossroads, Hellboy is still chained to a thick wooden pole and is confronted by a fully re-animated Vladimir Giurescu on horseback. Hellboy cracks the pole and hits the horse with it, the horse and Giurescu instantly turn into bones. The Iron Maiden turns into snake-like like Hecate and tells Hellboy that he cannot escape his destiny. She swollows him, his horns fully re-grow and he sees the Ogdru-Jahad before he refuses to help end the world and snaps off his horns. He appears back at the crossroads where Kate Corrigan finds him.
Tumblr media
In Norway, Rasputin confronts von Klempt, Kroenen and Zinco and temporarily blinds Zinco who accidentally presses a button that blows up the whole castle. In a helicopter above Romania, Hellboy is told that there was no sign of the iron maiden. At the end of the issue, it is revealed that the skeleton of Vladimir Giurescu was in the process of being moved to [B.P.R.D.] HQ, but while it was temporarily placed in storage at the Bucharest airport it disappeared and has never been recovered. It is also revealed that the head of Father Nicholas Budenz never spoke again but continued to be the focus of poltergeist activities, including sudden temperature drops and the levitation of objects, for weeks.
Epilogue At the World Tree, Yggdrasil, the Baba Yaga tells Rasputin that he cannot be a god and that he has failed. She asks Rasputin to stay with her but he decides to go on trying to make himself a god.
REVIEW
This story is the natural continuation of Seed of Destruction. Seems like we never saw Hellboy cut his horns until this moment (kind of spoiled by years of Hellboy in the movies).
The horror element is the strongest one in this story, but you have to appreciate how grounded Hellboy sounds. His dialogues make a lot of sense wherever he is, no matter the circumstance. He is not prone to melodramatic expositions.
Mignola is playing a very long game about Hellboy’s purpose and origins. I think it works for Hellboy because it’s his creation and being an indie product, has its own following that will read everything to stay updated. It’s not that you cannot enjoy this story by itself, but there are too many references and characters from previous stories that are not properly re-introduced.
I give this story a score of 8

Wake the Devil: Chapter Two
Words & Art: Mike Mignola | Colours: James Sinclair | Letters: Pat Brosseau | Colour Separations: Dave Stewart

Additional Notes: There was also a “The MonsterMen” back-up in the original mini-series from Gary Gianni, James Sinclair, and Sean Konot.
Plot Summary:
Hellboy launches himself into Castle Giurescu to confront Ilsa Haupstein and discover the potentially missing body of Vladimir Giurescu, only to be ushered into a world so much stranger than he imagined.
Reading Notes:
(Note: Pagination is solely within the chapter and not indicative of anything within the original comic or collections.)
Tumblr media
pg. 1 - Hellboy “dropping in” on Ilsa and her henchmen, still funny in the second chapter.
pg. 2-4 - Inept, ridiculous henchmen is definitely a theme that will run through the series. The design for Unmensch is pretty neat.
pg. 4 - This falling through the floor gag is a recurring joke from The Wolves of St. August.
Tumblr media
pg. 5-7 - Interesting flashback here that picks up on the tail end of Hellboy’s arrival in the first issue of Seed of Destruction. We see the cracks that are forming between Rasputin’s group and the broader ideals of the Nazi party, and the formation of Haupstein, Kroenen, and Kurtz as the foundation of Rasputin’s new Reich. It’s an interesting parallel to Jesus founding his church upon Peter. Also, further indications of Ilsa’s attachment to Vladimir Giurescu.
pg. 7 - The intersequence shifts are a narrative technique that aren’t as often used in comics any more. Scene breaks most often occur with a whole page, rather than mid-page. This is definitely an old-school comics technique. The one here is fairly seamless between Ilsa speaking with Rasputin in the past and his reappearance in the present, but Mignola uses several of the shifts in this issue, including another at the end of Rasputin’s spiel and then one between the Ogdru Jahad sequence and Hellboy recovering beneath Giurescu Castle.
pg. 10 - Among the priest’s abjurations of Ogdru Jahad and plea for protection from evil, we get a couple interesting things that are left unexplained at this point. The first is Anung Jahad Un Rama. I won’t explain it myself, but this is important for later. Don’t look it up if you don’t want spoilers. The second is that the priest is seeking protection from the Anu. Where the rest of the Ogdru Jahad were pulled from other Mesopotamian and Egyptian gods and goddesses, it’s interesting that so too was this one, but still with his original intent and authority.
Anu: He was the supreme deity in the Sumerian tradition, with the role of sky father and source of all, similar to Zeus and Odin in that sense, but also as the singular point from which everything else originated. (There are some who equate Anu to the Semitic god El--though that term technically just means “god”, similar to baal meaning “lord”, and was used to refer to many deities--and in turn to Yahweh. Such that references to Anu could well be considered references to the capital “G” Judeo-Christian God, but scholars will certainly argue that point.)
pg. 12 - Mike Mignola is a master of ominous foreshadowing.
Tumblr media
pg. 14 - I think it’s probably safe to say that you can sit with any issue of Hellboy and pull out at least one image from every single page and state that it’s a masterful composition. Mignola is great with moody, atmospheric, and visually interesting panels that make you wonder about a character’s story even with minimal or no words or explanation. The introductory shot of Vladimir Giurescu’s father is one such composition. This is probably one of my favourite panels from all of Hellboy.
Tumblr media
pg. 14-19 - I really like how Mignola is telling the story here, with multiple narratives within Giurescu’s fathers story. There’s the historical bit of Vladimir being seduced by Ilsa and the promise of the modern world in Nazi Germany, the ultimate destruction of the family at Hitler’s hands, and then a skip back into fable of not only how Giurescu became a vampire (or whatever kind of creature he happens to be), but of finding “her”, saving “her”, and bringing “her” back to health so that “she” can help Vladimir when he was near death. There are so many different moving parts in the storytelling that’s it just so incredibly rich in lore and fable.
pg. 17 - Mignola’s take on Lamia is interesting, blending different interpretations, the blur of her and Hecate, and the mythology surrounding the lamiae as a race of mythological creatures amidst the witches of Thessaly from Apuleius’ Golden Ass. It’s basically a syncretic approach to the various myths from which Mignola pulls his own.
There’s also an interesting bit here that near as I can tell isn’t from any interpretation of the Lamia myth, incorporating Thoth into the story. He basically supplants Hera as the perpetrator of the curse on Lamia. Thoth was basically the architect of the Egyptian gods, serving as the god of languages, structure, and magic, forever writing the universe into existence. I suppose in terms of cursing a serpent it makes a bit of sense, when you consider that the Greeks saw Thoth as Hermes, and from there one of the foundational mystical figures, Hermes Trismegistus was formed. His staff was the Caduceus, basically the winged rod with two snakes entwined about it, which itself is believed to tie back to the myth of Tiresias. The prophet who struck two copulating snakes and then was turned into a woman. (The overall explanation for Thoth and Hecate later in the Hellboy story will be a lot more straightforward than what I’ve lain out.)
Tumblr media
pg. 22 - More pulled from the Golden Ass in regards to the women of Thessaly, being able to turn themselves into birds. I find it interesting that here, they’re essentially depicted as harpies. Also, love the humour as it dawns on Hellboy what they are and what he’s walked into. Another funny cliffhanger before the next chapter.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts:
Wake the Devil really brings together much of what I think of when I think of Hellboy, how it mixes horror genres, mythology, pulp-styled superheroics, the occult, and humour into this whole that transcends the individual parts.
You definitely get the impression that Mignola is laying the groundwork for something bigger here, building the larger Hellboy mythology out of these pieces, and leading the story into a different direction than we may have originally thought.
Also, awesome imagery of starving vampire grandpa.

Shitlist Reviews - Hellboy - 2004
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m Amateur Fan 2.27 and welcome to the Shitlist, where bad movies burn and welcome to the second review of 2017’s Super Origins Month; through the years Superheroes are either from other planets, born with abilities as well as being trained into becoming who they are, but in this hero, it’s entirely a different story or from Hell.
Hellboy was created by Mike Mignola in 1993 with publisher Dark Horse Comics, the story with Hellboy is that he was summoned from Hell to Earth as an infant during the end of 1944 by Nazi occultists, though he was found by Allied Forces including Professor Trevor Bruttenholm who forms the Bureau or Paranormal Research and Defence.
A movie adaptation of the character was brought to life in 2004 by Guillermo Del Toro which followed one of the original stories (which I now possess) Seed of Destruction which would depict his arrival and his abilities to process his powers through the comics; Production history is pretty scarce to find when it comes to searching it aside from its box office returns as well as it’s critical reception.
The movie only had a $66 million dollar budget but received over $99 million dollars back, as well with the film receiving very good reviews with 81% positive from Rotten Tomatoes and 72% from Metacritic.
But seeing that technically it is based on a Horror comic (the series was going through a series of horror stories relating to the occult as well as demonology) this movie was changed drastically to remove the horror themes that made it a success.
So let’s dive into the movie and see whether or not that it should be sent back to where Hellboy came from, this is Hellboy.
The movie begins with a quote from a fictional story by Lovecraft (yeah this movie’s gonna be good) based on the Seven Gods of Chaos known as the Ogdru Jahad which will break free from their prisons to reclaim Earth, following that is an opening narration by the late great John Hurt (whom you will recognise by playing Joseph Merrick in the Elephant Man) stating that the origin of Hellboy began in 1944 a few miles away from the coast of Scotland.
I have to admit that for this part, they’ve got the opening right so far aside from the few mistakes such as the date being wrong as it’s October and not December; The mission was to stop a secret Nazi movement as they were about to combine black magic with technology to summon the Seven Gods of Chaos which is lead by Grigori Rasputin.
You see the Nazi’s placed their experiment on a destroyed church as it holds lay-lines to alternative dimensions which lead them to create a portal; the British army along with Professor Trevor Bruttenholm are seeing over the operation in hope that it brings negative results. As the Nazi’s prepare their assault, we are introduced to our main villains (aside from Rasputin), Ilsa von Haupstein as well as Obersturmbannfuhrer Karl Ruprecht Kroenan, Hitler’s top Assassin.
Before the Experiment begins, Grigori bless Ilsa with everlasting life before opening the portal to awaken the Seven Gods, It does work but it comes at a price as the Allied forces throw grenades to destroy some of the equipment the Nazi’s were using leading an attack against them both, also causing Rasputin to be sucked through the portal, killing him.
Though the experiment is over and the Nazi’s defeated, Kroenan escapes with Ilsa leading Bruttenholm to recover from an injury in a tomb only to realize that the portal has been opened for too long leading him to believe that something may have crawled through. They do discover has come through, a young child, an infant that is covered with red skin as well as a tail and a stoned right hand.
Quick thought, if it did crawl out of the portal, how come no-one saw him first hand?
Bruttenholm manages to take the child and hosts him as a father leading a parental relationship, leading him to give the name ‘Hellboy’ to the infant. Which leads to the main credits, the following scene is in Moldavia present day as we see Ilsa and Kroenan killing a guide towards a tomb leading Rasputin to be resurrected. .
The next scene we see Trevor at a hospital in New York only to discover that his body is riddled with brain cancer, yeesh dude that’s a downer why don’t they detain him for more testing or at least attempt to surgically remove it? Anyway as he’s assigned leader of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD for short), he watches a live show on a store television leaving the hospital starring FBI Director Tom Manning (played by Jeffrey Tambor) to announce that Hellboy doesn’t exist.
At the Bureau however an FBI recruit is sent over by Broom’s request leading him to arrive late, as well as arriving on a freaking moped.... amateur... the recruit, John Myers is introduced to the Bureau very quickly as he arrives at section 51 meeting the first attraction to the Bureau. John arrives in a Library and sees a large glass tank full of water only to be shocked that its home to an amphibious humanoid named Abe Sapien, which is true to the original material... kudos.
Broom introduces himself and gives a brief back story to Abe as well as assigning him to his job role also indicating that Hitler’s death wasn’t expected for another year; He’s quickly introduced to another agent of the Bureau, Clay who works very closely with Hellboy with also gives another indication towards his natural activities.
We are introduced to Hellboy (whom is played by Ron Perlman) who is not so easily happy to see Myers as he notices his horns. You see in the comics, Hellboy is forced to trim his horns down to give him more of human appearance, even by the Bureau, in this however; he does it to fit in which is pretty much the same answer.
So as Hellboy is known in this universe (aside from the comics anyway) to being reckless, he does have to follow the rules meaning that he’s watched 24/7 as well as having an escort for company, Hellboy does manage to avoid getting into trouble when an alarm is called stating that a monster has been sighted a Library.
Hellboy and Abe arrive at the Library with the bureau in a garbage truck (stealthy?) and prepare to fight only for Hellboy to talk about Liz, the third BRPD member who has the ability to control pyrokinetic abilities, after the discussion, Hellboy prepares to enter the Library were the monster was last seen and gets ready for a fight.
Guards lay dead before him as he walks through only for Abe to provide him information about the creature which is called Sammael, the Hellhound of Resurrection; though when it comes to killing it, Hellboy is more than surprised, Sammael brings more of a fight towards HB giving it the advantage to throwing him out of the Library to the alley below with the BRPD to follow pursuit.
HB manages to recover shortly only to meet the person who summoned to begin with, though this would come to a problem as Sammael returns to finish HB off only to latch a leech onto his arm, infecting him with its offspring. Myers interrupts the fight leading the Hellhound to leave in HB’s dismay (nice one kid, first day on the job and you release a monster from hell, it’s like Peck from Ghostbusters all over again).
Though Sammael does manage to evade Hellboy through the streets, HB manages to save John from evasive drivers and tracks the creature to the underground train system, leading a fight which would end the fearsome beast, showing us another ability that Hellboy possesses, heat resistance. HB leaves the Bureau to meet up with a former Bureau member, Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Sherman who possesses the ability of pyro-kinesis.
Though at the Library however Abe is going over some evidence that was damaged during the fight only for Manning to arrive to berate Broom on HB’s actions, which causes Abe to find something interesting, a mysterious sword that was left behind by one of the assailants, leading it to be Ilsa and Kroenan who invaded the Library along with the newly resurrected Rasputin in order to release a Hellhound as a guardian.
He also mentions that he placed a curse on Sammael which if it’s killed two more would take its place, which explains the orbs that we saw coming from its carcass; though Abe sees something else in Broom when he starts to fall stating that he’s very sick on a rapid level. Though shortly HB is seen talking with Elizabeth at a mental hospital where she resides in order to control her abilities which raises the question how seeing that they stated they were uncontrollable.
Though Liz (played incredibly by Selma Blair) has severe doubts on returning to the BRPD through her usage of her powers, HB doesn’t take this as lightly as the Bureau has found them leading HB to collapse due to the amount of blood loss from the fight, leading John to get a vain interest in Liz’s background.
At the Bureau however, Abe manages to retract several eggs from HB’s wound leading him to believe that the Hellhounds resemble Amphibians when it comes to habitats, this would also resemble the fact that HB managed to kill one of them on the underground train tracks leading Broom to send a team of Agents (including Clay) to assist them.
At the Underground, HB, Abe and the Agents manage to find a passage way leading to the Hellhound’s nest which is quite a lot actually, seeing it raises the question that it needs a blooded host for the eggs to hatch... HB manages to find a manhole leading to a large water chamber were the majority of the eggs are hidden leading Abe to volunteer to find and destroy them.
During this Hellboy manages to find Kroenan who was using a maintenance area as a hideout leading him to fight another Hellhound leading him to fight it on an underground station full of pedestrians leading him to both reveal himself in the public eye as well as saving the humans from the beast. Abe however is having no luck at all as the Hellhounds attack him wounding him badly, leading for the other agents to get killed off by the Hellhounds as well as Clay whose killed off by Kroenan.
At the Bureau.... hold on, how the hell did HB get Abe out of the Water? Did he deal with the Hellhounds first? What about Kroenan, how did he get him out of there? Questions aside, Abe is in a recovery booth leading for Manning to literally scold HB even though he knows it’s a bad idea, John on the other hand has managed to talk to Liz into rejoining the Bureau which makes HB jealous when Liz mentions that John is taking her out for coffee.... shortly after HB throws a heavy container at Manning through a window.
HB manages to spy on John and Liz through the streets of New Jersey as Broom starts to perform an autopsy on Kroenan leading a discovery that Kroenan is now a man built around clockwork parts and black magic, creepy which is true but physically impossible seeing that bones and blood cells erode on a rapid level after death.
After the Autopsy, Broom comes face to face with Rasputin who somehow managed to get his way into the Bureau (even I’m confused about it) leading for him to tell Broom his plan with Hellboy, you see Rasputin originally brought Hellboy through as a messenger to bring the 7 gods of Chaos through his stone right arm which will be used as a portal. after informing Broom on what is going to happen, Rasputin gives the order to Kroenan (who somehow managed to piece himself back together) to kill the old man.
HB however manages to be greeted by a young lad who he quickly be friends only to find some bad news as the Bureau have found John and Liz, leading to an funeral of Broom, granted this is emotional and all but wouldn’t Hellboy be breaking down most of all seeing that he and Broom had a father and son like relationship?
After the Funeral, Hellboy manages to find a note which Broom was researching last which leads to an Russian informant  who worked closely with Rasputin, leading HB to have a brief talk with Liz about how he’s feeling, leading the Bureau and Manning to go for a decrepit cemetery in Moscow.
Getting there is no problem but getting in the hideout is going to be a challenge as they are struggling to find a crypt or an entrance, Hellboy has the idea of resurrecting one of the informants that was one the note leading to a pretty bleak but somehow funny voice over from a marionette carcass.
They manage to find the entrance leading to the group to be separated shortly through a trap, John and Liz in one with Manning and Hellboy with the other, Manning and HB manage to have a brief argument due to their authority which raises HB an advantage as they’ve fallen quickly into a trap, HB manages to save Manning (whom still distrusts him, even after saving his life).
The two of them manage to run into Kroenan leading HB to suffer another curse when it comes to falling into a spike trap only to be saved by Manning which gives HB in an advantage in killing Kroenan by throwing him on some spikes with a touch of overkill by throwing a large clockwork gear on him (irony much?).
John and Liz however have a ball as they are surrounded by Hellhounds leading them to lose their only weapon, a belt full of high explosives but it does give John the advantage in assaulting Liz to trigger her pyrokinetic abilities to save them both, only for Hellboy to get in the mix leading the 3 of them to be held unconscious as well as captive.
HB wakes up first to Rasputin speaking his real name to Hellboy and his purpose, the stone hand mainly which is vital to his plan in calling the Seven gods of Chaos, he also informs HB that if he doesn’t do his demands, he would take Liz’s soul. Briefly after realising his nature, HB transforms himself to the full demon form that he was summoned for as well as opening the portal to the other world bringing the Seven Gods of Chaos towards him.
John manages to break free from Ilsa’s restraints and knocks her out cold forcing Hellboy in the right direction, in the way his father raised him which causes Hellboy to snap out of it which causes him to break his Horns, breaking the portal and killing the gods at the same time, he fatally stabs Rasputin whom informs him that one of the Gods of Chaos has already emerged on Earth in human form which granted him his power.
Hellboy refuses this and leaves with Liz and John, though Liz is still unconscious, Hellboy informs John to keep an eye on her as he will return to finish off them monster, only for the Monster to grab him via tentacle and pull him towards it, fortunately Hellboy manages to grab the grenades from earlier and uses them when he’s being digested by the creature, blowing it up from the inside, which would kill him too in the process, but meh it’s a comic movie.
So Happy ending, Hellboy returns to the Bureau with Liz, John thinks of a different occupation as he’s with the Bureau and Manning is contemplating his allies with the bureau.
And that was Hellboy.
And it’s not as good as I originally imagined, granted it had a lot of story towards the mythology of the character as well as the BRPD which is pretty interesting towards the film’s logic as well as the comic-book lore but does it count as an adaptation, well that’s a major question as it raises a lot of questions to one graphic novel.
The answer to that is a mix between yes and no, I’ll get with the negatives first as there are a lot of, through the story of Seed of Destruction, the Hellhounds were more Amphibians which gave their unique advancement of attacking others when it’s towards water, but when it’s towards the movie, they appear more of dogs rather than amphibians.
Another negative is that characters mainly Hellboy, as he’s more respectful towards his job as well with the Bureau agents, mostly with Broom as he shows the most concern for, especially when it comes towards the fact that he raised him when he first arrived. His relationship with Liz was strictly professional as well as Abe but his characteristics towards Abe were the most accurate towards the source material.
The story behind Rasputin wasn’t well laid as it missed most of the story on what happened after the war eventually finished, it’s briefly explained that he went into solitude for a good while only to heal from his injuries aside progressing his abilities. Kroenan and Ilsa are hardly mentioned after the war sequence only for it to be in the air whether or not they were found by Nazi Hunters or by the Bureau.
The outlook of the investigation is sent to an abandoned house which is set by a woman who worked closely with Rasputin but it turns out that she was more of a relic as it was her spirit who spoke to others not her body. And the story with Rasputin has changed as well as he wanted to unleash the magic of the other universe rather than to exploit.
The positives is that they’ve got Hellboy pretty close when it comes to demonstrating his abilities to fight as he does show a brutal outlook on his attacks as well as his knowledge of the paranormal and unknown. The Bureau is done pretty close the comics as they care too much towards the activities towards the paranormal, supernatural and the unknown.
The visual effects are pretty stunning for a 2004 film but when it comes towards adapting the creatures on screen, I think it’s pretty useless as it’s more on tone towards the old generation, hell I see better work on Photoshop than this, the Practical effects however are really well made, closely resembling what the characters intend to look like in the comics.
The acting however can be summed as such, it’s basically more of a draft rather than an adaptation, for the people who need to study Hellboy, they made it well for new comers but for old-school readers it’s more obsolete which makes the effort withdrawn, I think they should at-least edit the script in some scenes mainly towards Hellboy and Liz as they appear more of teenage lovers from a high school movie rather than professional monster hunters.
The film though as direction is different, though the effects are both good and bad aside from the script work which is basically the same answer, I would give the direction it’s due as it brought more life to the comic than DC did with Vertigo’s Hellblazer. At least with this movie, they stuck close to the origin on Hellboy rather than having Keanu Reeves play a Liverpudlian.
For the movie however, I’m kinda stuck between Hitlist and Shitlist, though the score is pretty forgettable but through the practical effects, this movie is still sublime towards special effects artists, this movie is on the Hitlist... for now.
Now I know this review is a bit late but seeing how it’s late as well as Super Origins Month, I’m expanding it through April which means that the next reviews with based on 2 Marvel hits from the 60’s, as the next movie will begin a key-chain to what separated our genetic code from simple animals, Mutation.
I’m Amateur Fan 2.27 and I’ll see you guys in the next review.
