DEN OF GEEK CRITICS PICKS
Django Unchained
The second of Quentin Tarantino’s revisionist history lessons, Django Unchained is a provocative, post-modern Western film that mixes the widescreen sensibilities of Sergio Leone with Tarantino’s own gonzo impulses to create something hyper-violent, subversively funny, and more than a bit uncomfortable. Jamie Foxx stars as a slave freed by a German bounty hunter played by Christoph Waltz. Waltz won an Oscar for his performance as the kind German that takes in the stoic but savvy Django as his partner. Together, they travel the pre-Civil War South, killing slavers and savage men. Eventually, they embark on a more personal mission, as Django intends to free his beloved wife from a sadistic plantation owner played by a scenery-chewing Leonardo DiCaprio. With anachronistic needle-drops, hands-over-eyes horrors, and more blood than a donation bank, Django Unchained is an epic, entertaining revenge fantasy for the ages.
Silver Linings Playbook
From director David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook is a screwball romantic comedy for the modern age. Despite inviting, yet livewire lead performances from Jennifer Lawerence and Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook really shines as an ensemble: Robert DeNiro, Jackie Weaver, Chris Tucker and Anupam Kher bring fully-realized characters to life in just a handful of scenes. Based on Matthew Quick’s novel of the same name, Silver Linings Playbook finds Bradley Cooper as a man who has been released from a psychiatric hospital a bit too soon. He’s frantically trying to prove that he’s bettered himself in an effort to win back his wife, but when he meets the equally unstable and filterless character played by Jennifer Lawerence, unusual sparks fly. Combining the familiar tropes of a sports film with unorthodox romantic leads, Silver Linings Playbook is a crowd-pleasing watch that creates harmony out of dysfunction.
Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations
It never mattered where Anthony Bourdain was going, we just wanted to be along for the ride. We lost the soulful, iconoclastic bad-boy of the culinary world far too soon, but he left behind a treasure trove of rewarding travelogues that tackled culture, social dynamics, and most importantly, food. Whether he was weighing in on a world-famous culinary hotspot or peeling back the curtain on a hole-in-wall gem, Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations was always thoughtful, fearless, and never less than authentic. It’s the rare show that is as educational as it is entertaining, hosted by a candid host who knew how to travel, knew where to eat, but most crucially, knew how to connect with people. Reality TV doesn’t get realer than this.
Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Following the mind-boggling success of the original Halloween, director John Carpenter had a clever idea. Instead of churning out sequels starring Michael Meyers, Halloween would become an anthology series, with each new film telling a spooky tale centered on the October holiday. The concept was inevitably scrapped, but Halloween III: Season of the Witch suggests that maybe Carpenter and co. should have stuck to their guns. Taking inspiration from Invasion of the Body Snatchers and working off a concept that Carpenter described as “witchcraft meets the computer age,” Halloween III: Season of the Witch finds a doctor and the daughter of a toy maker trying to uncover the horrifying truth behind the town of Santa Mara, home to Silver Shamrock, the world’s largest manufacturer of Halloween masks. Intelligent, surprising, and disturbing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch is due for a critical reevaluation that heralds it as one of the most ambitious horror movies of the ‘80s
Clerks II
With the recent announcement that Clerks III has started production, it’s the perfect time to revisit Kevin Smith’s first-sequel to his independent film phenomenon, Clerks. Clerks II picks up with our titular clerks Dante and Randall 10 years after the events of the first film. The Quick Stop has gone up in flames and been replaced with a Mooby’s fast food restaurant. Dante and Randall toil the day away with their sheltered co-worker Elias and too-cool for minimum wage manager Becky. While the film tackles adult male friendships and middle age complacency, it’s main appeal is still sitting around, shooting the shit with your pals and listening to their expletive-filled rants about Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or whatever pop culture fascination that they’re hung up on. Come for the surprisingly poignant story about Dante deciding to leave his friend behind, stay for Jay, Silent Bob, and a donkey.

A Second Decade of Movies
Ten years ago on Facebook, I compiled a list of every movie I watched, in order, from the first decade of the network’s existence. Now, here’s part two, covering the years 2010-2019. There are 754 titles below, though some are repeat viewings. The movie I watched the most? Harold Lloyd in “The Freshman.” My favorite movie from the last decade? “The Tree of Life.”
But I began the 2010s with James Cameron’s mega-hit “Avatar.” I’ll go on record saying the movie is still enjoyable ten years later, as I watched it again in 2019 with my kids to prep for visiting the World of Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. But--I also agree with those who say there’s little remembered from the film in the culture today. Can you name the stars? Recount the plot in detail? Mostly what we remember from the film is the spectacle of it all, game-changing when it was released in 2009.
At any rate, enjoy the list below! If a title is hotlinked, it will take you to an essay, interview, or related coverage on the film by yours truly.

A God’s pupil Loki x teen reader
This one was actually a request that I was given on wattpad PLUS a prompt that I came across on “Imagine Loki”’s tumblr page, I may post this request on their pg idk I still need to figure out how do you submit other work onto other tumblrs and review their guidelines. Anyways I’m glad people are starting to like the stories I’m putting up :)
“Imagine Loki coming across a group of children picking on another child who is younger, smaller, and obviously defenseless. He comes to his/her’s aid, remembering how it felt when other Asgardian children picked on him growing up. After comforting the child, he offers to show them some magic, whereupon he accidentally discovers this child has a talent for sorcery. He decides to take the child under his wing and make him/her his student, watching them grow up over the years. He teaches them magic, how to fight, and how to outsmart their opponents. The two become very close, and consider each other family. One day, years later, Loki’s protégé is confronted by the same bullies who tormented him/her years earlier. Thanks to Loki’s training, his/her tormentors are defeated, and they call a truce. Loki watches from afar, secretly, with a proud grin on his face.“

______________________________________________
I can’t believe that witless oaf Thor has forced me to stay down here in Midgard as punishment for my crimes. I would rather be locked for eternity in the dungeons or even death would be a more pleasant punishment than staying down here, living with his ‘Avenger’ friends. I would give anything to be anywhere else in all the nine realms but here where hardly anyone is of use to me, the Midgardians always fighting amongst each other for the most stupidest of reasons, they needed to be ruled, which I would’ve easily done had it not been for those meddling Avengers.
Luckily I managed to sneak out of the Tower and disguise myself to hide among the crowd so those oafs wouldn’t find me. One can only take so much from being in that tower.
It wasn’t until I suddenly came across a school yard of sorts to see a bunch of children making crude comments to a younger Midguardian girl. I stood and just watched as these older adolescents gang up upon this petite young girl with short brown hair and glasses. I took notice of these juveniles starting to push and shove this young child around making me feel something that I haven’t felt in a long time.
Empathy.
I began to remember the times I was teased back up in Asgard for my weak stature, and always preferring magic instead of brute strength and raw muscle like my cow of a brother.
Having enough after seeing one of the bullies shove this poor girl towards a tree hitting her head, I trudged towards them heated with anger as I called out to them.
“Halt right there you worthless slugs!” The bullies turned towards me and one of the girls stated.
“Who the hell are you?”
“I think it be best if you don’t know. But what I will say is if you don’t stop tormenting this child, you lot are going to be very sorry”.
“Ha this guy thinks he can take us on!” A boy now taunted.
“I’d rather not pick a fight with children, but I will punish them to teach them a lesson”. It was then I surrounded them in green mist and when the mist vanished I had turned them into pigs. They all squealed and weed as they ran home like dogs with their tails between their legs. I smirked and stated. “Classic pigs tale, never gets old. That’s one good thing that came out of this realm”.
It was then my attention turned to the young girl whimpering by the tree.
I cautiously knelt down beside her and could see her shoulders shaking and hear her beginning to sniffle as if she were about to start sobbing. Her hands blocked her face from my sights and I slowly reached out and stroked down her head feeling a slight bump on her head, focusing my magic on that spot I healed her and while I did that, she suddenly shot up her head and looked at me. Her (e/c) eyes glistened red with unshed tears that she was probably dying to release but refused in front of her tormentors. I knew the feeling all too well, but this time she would have someone I didn’t back then.
“It’s alright now, let them out. They’re gone now, it’s okay”. It was then she let out a sob as her head lowered down and she suddenly wrapped her arms around me and cried into my shoulder. Normally I would push a person away and just go on about my business maybe even use my magic on them to get them off me, but this girl—I can’t explain why but I felt the need to comfort this girl as she needed me more than anything else, and I could almost sense some more greater pain than what had just happened.
I wrapped my arms around her with one hand rubbing soothing circles on her back and the other one stroking through her brown hair. All the while I gently rocked her and whispered sweet nothings in her ear to hopefully give her some comfort.
“Shhhh, it’s okay little one, it’s okay. They’re gone now, I’m here, I’m here for you now, shhhh”. I allowed her to weep as much as she needed and when she finally started to calm down, I separated from her just a bit and said to her as I wiped away some of her tears away, “watch this little one,” I then conjured up a beautiful star just for her.
Her eyes widened and she cautiously reached out for it but retreated away.
“Go ahead, it’s yours. It won’t hurt you”. I assured with a gentle smile. She took the star and held it in her hands and just stared at it in pure amazement. As I looked down at this young child, my heart started to beat, my stomach to mush and I felt this sorta affection for her beginning to grow, like she’s more than she appears to be.
Little did I know how right I was because at that moment that star I gave her began to glow brighter. I covered my eyes from the brightness only to soon see that she had created a constellation right there in her hand.
This child could do magic.
I just stared at her in shock when I heard her voice finally ring through my ears.
“You’re gonna mock me too, aren’t you? All the others ids do, and my parents disowned me as a child knowing I could do this. This thing has ruined my life ever since I first discovered it, I try to wish it away but everyday it grows more powerful and there’s no way I can control it. Sometimes I wish I wasn’t born a freak and just die”. How could this sweet thing be saying this? She looked to be about 13-15 years old how could she wish for such a cruel fate at this delicate of an age? She had also said that her parents have abandoned her because of this gift and that is also another reason why the bullies pick on her. This child truly does remind me of well me in a way. Her parents disown her for a gift, children tease her and pick on her for it, and she feels all alone in this world because of such an amazing gift and what she could do with it with the proper training.
“No, no you’ve seen what I can do. That would mean that I pick on myself for doing magic. Listen dear one, magic is not a curse, it’s a gift. Where I come from magic is a wondrous thing, my own mother taught me how to do magic so that I wouldn’t be in the shadows of my father and brother. You are a truly gifted child among this rabble of humans, a true diamond within a rubble of rock and stone, all you need is time, patience and some training, and you can become the greatest star in the world”. I stood up and gave her my hand and continued, “come with me. I can teach you all that I know of magic, I can teach you to shine and show you that you don’t have to hate this gift you’ve been born with”.
“You can teach me to do that?” she asked skeptically.
“Indeed I can”. I gave her a soft smile and waited for her to take my hand. She looked up at me then at my hand and slowly reached out her hand for mine until she finally took it. I helped her stand up and I teleported us back to Avengers tower and said to her. “Welcome dear one, your magic training begins now”.
*FF TO 16 YEARS LATER YOU’RE POV*
It’s been years since that day when Loki saved me from the bullies and had taken me under his wing and throughout all that time he and I became very close. No not in the romantic kind of way, we sorta became like each other’s family, he became like a father figure to me and he looked at me in the proud daughter type of way. I couldn’t have asked for anything more than the day he found me and promised to teach me how to control my magic.
He taught me how to use it to defend myself, how to fight with it, to outsmart my opponents, and on the bright side to play pranks on the Avengers whom also have taken me in as part of the family but I was still rather close with Loki than anyone else.
He and I were practically inseparable and even one day when Thor had said that since Loki has learned his lesson serving here on Earth and was allowed to go back home, he refused with pride and told Thor that it was because of me he found a reason to stay on Earth, and he refuses to leave until the end of my days, maybe even watch over my children should I ever settle down with a guy.
And for his statement, I have been truly grateful of him and continued to strive to be the best. Even now as a young adult he still teaches me some new tricks to help me become the greatest illusionist just like him.
And it was a good thing to because one day all those lessons would soon pay off.
I was on my way back to Avengers Tower after my day job at a big fashion company when I saw walking up the street were my old bullies. As I tried to find another way to the tower I heard Tashi’s voice say.
“Hey isn’t that (y/n)?”
“My god that is her” said Aaron. My heart raced as I could see them as well as the other bullies coming closer. But it was then I remembered Loki’s lessons and it almost seemed like I could hear his voice speak out the rule.
Rule #3, Show no fear. Be confident in yourself. Never show your enemy you’re afraid. Trust in yourself and in your powers, and they will never fail you.
I took a breath then turned to see my group of tormentors now standing before me all grown up and I plainly said to them.
“Yes, it’s me. Surprised to see you all here, and still together”.
“Yeah well, sometimes you never lose touch after high school right?” Tashi said.
“It has been awhile hasn’t it (y/n)?” Said another female bully names Alyssa said.
“Yes it has, what brings you all here?” I asked trying not to show my impatience for them to share why they were here and not just because this was a simple stroll.
“Well, you see we’ve been looking for you?” Aaron began but I snapped at them.
“If you guys think I’m gonna fall prey to your torment think again! Now start talking your you’re going to be very sorry!” My anger suddenly snapped and I summoned a fireball in my hand ready to roast them alive.
“No! No! No! No! No! No! No! That’s—that’s not why we’re here! Please (y/n) just listen to us!” Aaron proclaimed.
“Yeah, we’re really, really, really sorry about how we made your life a hell back in school, we we’re just kids back then we were stupid and clueless to torture you the way we did. We wanted to make peace with you and hope that you would forgive us if we apologized!” The other groupies all nodded and proclaimed the same few statements all at once.
After all these years I’ve had to suffer with these guys always teasing me, abusing me and making the whole school turn against me they didn’t even deserve to live. I could just let them feel all the pain they gave me. I had them here kneeling before me, so I could just let them burn slowly and painfully. But—
But Loki’s voice rang in my head again.
Rule #1; Don’t use magic for vengeance. Using magic that way can lead to dark magic, and once you go down that road, the journey back isn’t easy. Trust me. I know. I won’t teach you to get revenge, but to control it and keeping it pure. You have the most purest of magic that I have ever seen, don’t you ever taint it for vengeance.
I dispersed the fireball and relaxed and turned to look at them still frightened by what I almost did then I asked them.
“You promise this isn’t a trick?”
“No, we really want to make amends with you (y/n) besides secretly we were jealous of you. You had these awesome powers and we didn’t”. Clyde, another bully said. I softly smiled then said,
“I know a great Shawarma joint just a few blocks away, I’m buyin”. They then stood up and we all walked towards the Shawarma joint, all the while talking about what we had all been doing.
Unaware that standing along the sidewalk watching us was a certain God of Mischief disguised as a typical business man. He looked at me with gentle eyes and a proud smile spread across his face.

Why New Parents Need to Take a Break From the News (and What They Should Do Instead)
In the months after my kids were born, the news cycle would send me into tailspins of anxiety and fear. The Penn State sex-abuse scandal and the Newtown shootings paralyzed me for days—I wept while changing diapers, wept in the bathtub, wept while pushing the stroller down the street. What might have been (merely!) horrifying pre-kids was now incapacitating. For my own mental health, I had to stop reading the news and looking at social media.
Take a Media Fast
Judging from the conversations in my moms’ groups, these feelings aren’t at all unusual. New parents are especially vulnerable to anxiety, says Laura Venuto, a New York City therapist specializing in postpartum mental-health issues. “Sleep deprivation and hormones exacerbate mood and anxiety symptoms. With new parenthood comes a heightened awareness that you’re suddenly not only responsible for yourself, but also a small child in what sometimes seems like a dangerous world.”
Dr. Venuto suggests a total news-media fast or at least a major reduction, corralling your news into 10 or 15 minutes (“In the morning! Not before bed!” she says), and then doing something pleasurable, like playing with your baby or calling a friend. For those worried that being out of touch means slacking off in their political activism, she gently suggests cutting yourself some slack: “If you’re a new parent, you’re not going to be making changes on a global scale. You’re in survival mode. You can put in a call to your representative, and that can be enough.”
Practice ‘Containment’
Lissa Hunsicker Kenney, a social worker in Brooklyn who counsels trauma survivors, also recommends “containment”—the first line of treatment for anxiety—as a first step. “Turning off your iPhone is containment—because it’s so easy for it to become uncontained. It just scrolls and scrolls, and it’s endless.”
So what are we supposed to do, instead? (Besides take care of our kids, I mean.) I asked Lifehacker readers, and my own new-mom friends, what media they turn to for good escapist distraction. I didn’t vet all the answers (though I did nix anything that had “horror” in its IMDB description—what about “non-disturbing” did these people not understand?) so do your own research before leaping into something totally unknown. They’re a good mix of classics, favorite sitcoms and adventure shows, a few kids’ shows and books, comics, and pretty much the entire oeuvre of the BBC.
Ideally, this list will remind of you of beloved books, TV shows, and movies that you’ve enjoyed in the past and will be soothing entertainment now, while you’re still in the sensitive new-parent stage. I read all of Jane Austen at night instead of mindless smartphone scrolling; others swear by sitcoms: “When my son was born we very quickly figured out we had to stop watching Breaking Bad and Walking Dead and just ended up re-watching Parks and Rec on a continuous loop for like three years,” one commenter wrote. Check out the original comments here, and please add your favorite comforting (no child-in-peril, no dead parents, no rapes or murders) media below.
TV & Movies
30 Rock
All Creatures Great and Small
Alias (a spy thriller spanning five seasons, so there are murders and occasional child-in-peril plotlines, but it’s a pretty campy show, so I didn’t find it especially distressing)
The Andy Griffith Show
Flip This House (or any fixer-upper/DIY type shows)
Any stupid Adam Sandler movie
Archer
Arrested Development
Black Adder
Black Books
Bob’s Burgers
Boondocks
Borgen
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (skipping “The Body” and maybe the second half of season five)
Catastrophe
Community
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Critical Role on Geek and Sundry
Doctor Thorne (almost comically predictable, appropriate for anyone with only half a functioning brain, but any costume drama will do in a pinch. Check out this terrific resource for period dramas, but I strongly urge you to skip Call the Midwife if you have a newborn.)
Drunk History
Ed, Edd ‘n Eddy
Elimidate
Everybody Loves Raymond
Farscape
Father Ted
Friends
Futurama
Get Smart
Ghostbusters
Gilmore Girls
Gravity Falls
The Great British Bake-off (or any cooking show)
Grey’s Anatomy (I can’t believe this is still on the air; I have like 10 years to catch up on. Warning: it’s a hospital show, so people do die. Deeennnnnnny!)
Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Laaaaaaaaaw
Hogan’s Heroes
How I Met Your Mother
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Jeeves and Wooster
Kids’ shows and movies, like Adventure Time, Reading Rainbow (the awesome 80’s-90’s version), A Dragon’s Tale, Out of the Box, Teen Titans GO, Rocko’s Modern Life, Hey Arnold!, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Babe, the Narnia movies, Nanny McPhee
Kiki’s Delivery Service (“Miyazaki in general is a great way to escape into a different realm. The colors, the music, the gorgeous inventive artwork and the great characters in all his films makes him a master illusionist and conductor into a whole new world..” “…but not Grave of the Fireflies,” says another commenter.)
Broad City (“It’s hilarious and my life feels like a complete financial success by comparison.”)
King of the Hill
Last Man on Earth
Lucha Underground
M*A*S*H
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
Midsomer Murders (“While there are murders, everyone is so provincial and charming, it’s like coming home where you know everyone except for that darned stranger that got themselves killed.”)

When people think of the best magician and illusionist on the planet, Criss Angel, is often the first that comes to mind. The Mindfreak himself, has now brought his exciting Rock and Roll brand of magic to Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.
This 2019/2020 Criss Angel, Mindfreak Show captivates and excites audience members in a way not seen since Harry Houdini walked the planet.
The show boasts over 75 mind-bending illusions with hair raising, state of the art effects. XSF is proud to have been involved and helped create such an amazing show.

“There are over 900 linear feet of truss over the audience with over a half a billion pixels of video.”
“There is only one truss company I could trust to make this all work and that’s XSFTruss!”
Criss Angel, Mindfreak, Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas
The Staging and Custom Truss for Mindfreak, Criss Angel
The show is described as a “technological marvel, designed to overload your senses and support Criss Angel’s visionary magic”. As one would expect, this Mindfreak Show came with several technical challenges and innovations that required a high level of detail and precision.
There is a lot of truss in this show, some is above the audience, some on stage, and some off. With that said, one unique aspect of this show was simply the variety of sizes and custom truss required for different reasons and purposes. While 100’s of feet of 20.5” x 20.5” truss was used in horizontal spans and vertical columns on and off stage, XSF also created a “never built before custom ”12” high by 6” wide truss, for use over head to carry above-average weight capacities.
Completely powder coated black, the star truss of this show is the 9 “fingers” of truss and video panels that span from front of stage to back of house. Each truss span is approximately 50 feet long and supports ½ meter X ½ meter LED Video over the audience.

TRUSS SPANS with LED Video Panels
As the design lead, Vice President Mark of XSF describes the finger trusses.
“The theater has structural areas that date back to when the Hotel was the Aladdin. Knowing this, there are always interesting nuances that make us work a little harder and think a little smarter. A unique challenge with these particular, over audience truss spans was there were very tight tolerances required. The truss needed to taper down to a very low trim height at the back of house which required a minimum height truss. Adding to this challenge it was concluded that the truss fingers needed to be all independent and have articulating fingers which would allow technicians to work on the video panels from the floor rather than utilizing fall protection. This is a big safety feature for the show.
The hoist are primarily CM Loadstars and Prostars.
If you’re looking to get dazzled on your next visit to Las Vegas drop into Planet Hollywood and take in the Criss Angel Show, you will not be disappointed.

Stardust Is Still One of the Best Neil Gaiman Adaptations Out There
https://ift.tt/2YS62Fl
Gaiman's work makes crossing mediums look easy, but the 2007 Stardust film remains one of the best adaptations of his work...

Matthew Vaughn's film adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Stardust is more than a decade old, but it hasn't lost any of its magic. With an all-star cast that included Daredevil's Charlie Cox and Homeland's Claire Danes, a director who would go onto make X-Men: First Class and Kingsman: The Secret Service, and a story from the mind of Neil Gaiman, Stardust is a funny, clever, and heartfelt fairy tale of a movie that happens to be criminally underrated by most mainstream movie audiences.

Why The Princess Bride Is a Perfect Fantasy Movie
The Illusionist Pulls An Epic Love Story From Thin Air
In the wake of the excellent Good Omens adaptation, we're taking the time to talk about the reasons why Stardust remains one of the best Gaiman adaptations out there, even if the box office numbers didn't reflect that or if the story didn't remain faithful to the book...
The history of the book.
Stardust originally began publication life as a comic book — specifically a prestige-format, four-issue miniseries. With the story by Gaiman and the illustrations by Charles Vess, Stardust began life as an inherently visual tale, which is perhaps one of the reasons why it works so well as a film.
read more: How Matthew Vaughn Made Stardust a Modern Fantasy
However, in 1999, Stardust was released as a more traditional novel by Gaiman without the illustrations from Hess. For me, this edition loses much of the story and magic of the original illustrated, comics-based version, which is perhaps why — when comparing the illustrations-less novel version of Stardust to the film version of Stardust — the former is left slightly wanting.
Luckily for all fans of the original Stardust comic-based storybook, Vertigo released a new hardcover edition in 2007 (to roughly coincide with the release of the movie) with 50 new pages of material, including some new artwork. Thus far, the Matthew Vaughn film is the only screen adaptation of Stardust...

The story of Stardust.
Stardust is a surprisingly complex story for a fairy tale adventure film that was also marketing as a family-friendly movie. The heart of the story comes in the quest of young Tristan Thorn (Charlie Cox), who ventures out of his small town of Wall into the magical kingdom of Stormhold that lies just next door, on the otherside of a wall.
Tristan is on the search for a star that has fallen from the sky, a gift for his lady crush Victoria. Things get complicated, however, when he discovers the star is not a piece of celestial rock, as he assumed, but rather a living, breathing woman in the form of Claire Danes' Yvaine.
read more: Good Omens Ending Explained
Elsewhere in Stormhold, others are searching for the star. Michelle Pheiffer's witch Lamia wants to cut out the star's heart and eat it so she and her sisters can continue to enjoy immortal life. The kingdom's royalty — a gaggle of cutthrout princes — are also on the hunt, as their dying father made a proclamation that whoever retrieved the stone around the star's neck would ascend to the throne.
youtube
Stardust juggles these multiple, interweaving storylines beautifully through imaginative, kinetic editing (one of Vaughn's hallmarks as a director). And, though many people point to the changing of the story's ending in the film, I find the movie's ending much better-paced and complementary to the other subtle (and not so subtle) changes the film makes to the book's worldscape.
read more: Hot Fuzz is the Best of the Cornetto Trilogy
Stardust's specialty lies in upending tropes in unexpected ways, while also celebrating them. It reminds me a lot of Hot Fuzz in that way. It is a great example of the Have Its Cake and Eat It Too mode of self-aware storytelling. In a rather cynical age, it manages to give us a satisfying fairy tale by subverting enough of its tropes to lure us hypnotically into embracing other ones. It doesn't always succeed — there a few too many damsel-in-distress moments for my liking — but, for the most part, its few flaws are overshadowed by its innumberable charms.
A great cast, led by Claire Danes & Charlie Cox.
Many of Stardust's aforementioned charms come in the quality of its expansive cast. Seriously, everyone is in this movie and they are giving it their all, making the script come to life with complexity, humor, and heart. In the central love story, we have Charlie Cox and Claire Danes as Tristan and Yvaine. Past that, highlights include Michelle Pheiffer's Lamia, Robert De Niro as Captain Shakespeare, and Mark Strong's Prince Septimus. (Strong would also go on to star in Vaughn's Kingsman as Merlin.)
Past that, we get some fun, memorable performances from Rupert Evertt as Prince Secundus, Peter O'Toole as the King of Stormhold, Henry Cavill as the prissy Humphrey, Ricky Gervais as the comedic Ferdy the Fence, and Sienna Miller as the haughty Victoria. And have I mentioned that it is all narrated by Ian McKellen? Yeah, the extras are basically all played by Oscar-winners in this movie.
read more: Will There Be a Good Omens Season 2?
For me, one of the chief strengths of the film over the book lies with the realness and development of the characters. That is in no small part to the impressiveness of this cast, but it also has something to do with the screenplay. While Gaiman tends to be more interested in archeypes, themes and prose, the film — perhaps by necessity, as a product of Hollywood — has much more interest in making these characters three-dimensional and relatable.
Which emphasis you prefer all depends on what kind of story-consumer you are, but, for me, Gaiman's archetypal characters tend to be the least interesting part of his imaginative works.
The changes from the book.
Anyone who has read both the book and seen the movie will know that the Stardust film, co-written by Vaughn and frequent collaborator Jane Goldman, changes quite a bit from its source material. As is common with adaptations, a lot is simplified — on both sides of the wall.
Tristan's home community is much less vast and complex. Likewise, the world of Stormhold is less strange and magical. In the book, there are all manner of magical creatures. For the sake of narrative simplicity or perhaps for budgetary concerns, that same scope of magical-kind is much more limited in the film.
read more: Terry Pratchett's Influence on the Good Omens TV Show
The film also adds in an entire sequence around De Niro's Captain Shakespeare that is barely present in the book. For me, this is actually an important decision. Brushing past the potentially reductive depiction of Shakespeare's marginalized identity, for me, this is where the film makes one of its smartest decisions: the montage. I am a big proponent of the montage in Hollywood blockbusters that have any interest in building a believable, meaningful relationship for two characters who have just met.
A montage gives us the illusion that an indefinable amount of time has passed and (more importantly) that, in that time, a whole manner of significant interaction could have and probably has occurred. In a two-hour film, the montage can cover all manner of underdeveloped character and character dynamic sins, and more Hollywood blockbusters should take advantage of it.
In Stardust, there's no way the Captain Shakespeare montage could have lasted more than a few days at most, given that only a week passes over the course of Tristan's journey in Stormhold. However, this is where Tristan and Yvaine fall in love, this is where Tristan makes his transition from gawky shopboy to more confident man, this is where Stardust makes us believe in the true love it must to pull off its fairy tale ending.
youtube
The ending.
There is also the matter of the book vs. film's endings. In the book ending, Lamia finds Yvaine in the market town near the wall, but — when she tries to take Yvaine's heart — Yvaine explains that she can't because she has already given it to Tristan. This is different from the film's more action-geared ending, which includes a fight between the reanimated corpse of Septimus and Tristan, as well as some rather extensive glass-smashing.
Ultimately, it is Yvaine who saves the day by using her love for Tristan to let out a burst of starshine, killing Lamia. Perhaps the larger change to the book's story is found in the epilogue. In the book, Tristan and Yvaine leave Stormhold for a time, leaving Una (Tristan's mother in charge). They eventually return, Tristan lives out his life as ruler, and then dies, leaving a heartbroken Yvaine to return to the sky alone.
read more: The Distinctive Direction of The Good Omens TV Series
In the film, the two live into their old age together as rulers of Stormhold, then — when they are very old — ascend to the sky to live as stars together. It is a thoroughly happy ending, one that doesn't make Tristan give up his ties to his family and friends in Wall, and one some Gaiman fans have problems with. For me, it is a minor point that has less to do with the story than the ending that occurs in the more immediate sense, completing Tristan's quest and Tristan and Yvaine's love story. And that ending is much better-paced and climactic than the one we get in the book.
Of course, the book is interested in much different things than the movie, and the less climactic, quieter ending reflects that. While the Stardust book is much more interested in engaging with and challenging pre-Tolkien English fantasy at a novelistic and prose level, the film doesn't even try to do the same. It would be a foolish attempt, after all, to try to mimick and subvert a style that lives so entirely in the pre-cinematic world. Instead, the Stardust film sets its sights on subverting and celebrating the three-act Hollywood blockbuster.
Gaiman's role in the movie.
Montages and ending specifics aside, all of the changes from the book to the film were made with the blessing of Gaiman, who also acted as a producer on the film and had some say in creative decisions. Speaking on the changes made for the Stardust film to MTV, Gaiman said:
What I did with Matthew was this thing you must never do. Don't do this; it is very, very wrong: I gave him the option for nothing. I phoned him up and said, 'OK, Stardust is yours; I really trusted him, and you don't run into that very often. He offered me the script, but I said, 'No, I wrote the novel, but this is your film, your vision. But I will help you.'
The first thing I did was find him a writer, Jane Goldman, who hadn't written a script before but I loved her novels, I loved her journalism, and she got the book. I was involved with the casting and set locations too.
For me, Stardust is one of the few examples of a film adaptation that aren't afraid to make changes that work much better for the format. Personally, I like the Stardust film more than the Stardust novel — though both contain their own, separate joys. In an era of remakes and adaptations, more filmmakers and writers of adapted screenplays could learn from Matthew Vaughn's and Jane Goldman's example.
What would a Stardust sequel have looked like?
Den of Geek chatted with Matthew Vaughn in 2015 about what a Stardust sequel would have looked like. The director already had a rough idea in place, if the movie had made enough money to warrant moving forward on another one — which, sadly, it did not.
Here's what Vaughn said:
I had a really crazy fun idea for a Stardust 2. The opening scene was Charlie Cox's character, being the king and throwing out the necklace. This time the necklace goes over the wall and bounces off Big Ben, and you're suddenly in London in the early 1960s, with these mad kings and princes and princesses running around London. All on the quest for the stone.
What sets Stardust apart.
Despite its status as both an adaptation of existing material and an interest in commenting on so many of the genre tropes that have come before, Stardust still feels like a wholly original work. It also manages to do the fairy tale genre with a commitment to whimsical sincerity that is rarely seen in today's media climate — especially for adults.
One needs look no further than Game of Thrones to see what kind of fantasy drama is valued in today's pop culture climate. It's downright refreshing to revisit a fantasy that doesn't let its use of irony ever endanger its commitment to comforting fairy tale values that are all-to-often dismissed as unimportant or childish.
No, Stardust manages to capture some of the silly self-awareness and unabashed sentimentalism of Princess Bride in a contemporary movie-making era where only one of those things is truly valued. For that — and for so much else — Stardust remains one of the best Neil Gaiman adaptations out there, even (and perhaps especially) when it's not particularly Gaiman-like at all.

A Guide To The Most Promising (And Ridiculous) Pilots For The Fall 2017 Season
There’s entirely too much television, and come this fall, there’s going to be even more. That’s when approximately 70 pilots hit the Big Four networks — ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC — and The CW, because your DVR isn’t already struggling enough. We haven’t actually seen any of the new series, but the plot descriptions and casts have been released, giving us an opportunity to make premature evaluations on our future favorite show. Using this guide, we highlighted five of the most promising-sounding pilots, and five of the most ridiculous. That’s not the same thing as “worst,” mind you. Is a drama about a “superstar magician” going to be any good? Probably not, but we can’t wait to watch it.
The Potentially Great
1. A.P. Bio (NBC)
A hilariously cynical Ivy League professor (Glenn Howerton) loses out on his dream job and goes to work as a high school biology teacher where he imposes his unorthodox teaching style and uses the kids to plot out revenge on those who wronged him.
Following the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 12 finale, Howerton told us that it’s “not entirely certain” whether he’s leaving the show or not. “I might be, but I might not be,” he confessed. “That really is the truth.” His availability largely depends on the success of A.P. Bio, which stars not only the Sunny co-developer in his first lead role in a network sitcom since That ’80s Show, but Patton Oswalt, who plays Principal Durbin, “a timid, petite, nervous mouse of a man.” The pilot was written by SNL‘s Mike O’Brien, and Seth Meyers is attached as an executive producer. It would be a huge surprise if A.P. Bio failed. We’ll have to wait to find out what that means for Sunny.
2. Ghosted (FOX)
A cynical skeptic (Craig Robinson) and a genius “true believer” in the paranormal (Adam Scott) are recruited by The Bureau Underground to look into the rampant “unexplained” activity in Los Angeles — all while uncovering a larger mystery that could threaten the existence of the human race.
This description reads kind of like a comedy version of The X-Files but with Adam Scott as David Duchovny and Craig Robinson as Gillian Anderson. I hope that was the entire pitch, now that I think about it.
“So you know The X-Files?”
“Yeah…”
“Well this is like that, but with Adam Scott from Parks and Rec as Mulder and Craig Robinson from The Office as Scully.”
“… as Scully?”
“Basically, yeah. And funny.”
“Okay, yeah. That’ll work.”
3. Household Name (ABC)
This multi-camera comedy follows a family who has an opportunity to buy the house of their dreams but under extremely abnormal circumstances: They must live with the previous owner, an eccentric, larger-than-life actress (Carol Burnett).
Multi-camera comedies have gotten a bad name in last 8-10 years as single-camera shows have seen their stars rise (Veep, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, etc. etc. etc.), but this one falls into the promising category for two reasons: Carol Burnett and Amy Poehler. Poehler is producing only, which is both good (she’s also a producer on Broad City, so there’s a track record here) and bad (whhhyyyy can’t I have a show where Carol Burnett plays Amy Poehler’s mom, preferable written by Mike Schur and Tina Fey and co-starring The Rock as their neighbor?). But still, just those two names make this one interesting.
4. Libby & Malcolm (ABC)
A blended family comedy about two polar-opposite political pundits (Felicity Huffman and Courtney B. Vance) who fall in love despite all odds and form an insta-family as well as a work partnership.
ABC has high hopes for Libby & Malcolm: it was the first official order of the pilot season. The network is probably right to be optimistic. The timely comedy stars American Crime‘s Felicity Huffman and American Crime Story‘s Courtney B. Vance, who won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his convincing performance as Johnnie Cochran, and comes from black-ish creator Kenya Barris. That’s a lot of crime, and even more talent.
5. Me, Myself, & I (CBS)
A single-camera comedy examining one man’s life over a 50-year span. The show will focus on three distinct periods in his life – as a 14-year-old in 1991, a 40-year-old (Bobby Moynihan) in the present day, and a 65-year-old (John Larroquette) in 2042.
This show had me at “Bobby Moynihan and John Larroquette playing different versions of the same character.” Also, please note the name “Jaleel White” six-deep in the cast list. Will it be any good? I have no idea. Could it all go to crap before even making it to the air? Of course. But am I intrigued? Very.
The Definitely Goofy
1. Deception (ABC)
When his career is ruined by scandal, superstar magician Cameron Black (Jack Cutmore-Scott) has only one place to turn to practice his art of deception, illusion, and influence — the FBI. He’ll become the world’s first consulting illusionist, helping the government solve crimes that defy explanation and trap criminals by using deception.
If there’s one thing I have always said about network television, it’s that there are not nearly enough shows about disgraced magicians working with the FBI. Sure, The Mentalist is kind of that. And Psych was sort of that, almost. But that’s not the point. The point is that this is happening and the blurb contains the phrase “the world’s first consulting illusionist,” which makes me so happy I might just explode right here in my seat. I hope a disgraced magician investigates my death. No, I demand it. Now that I know it’s an option, I can’t accept anything else.
The only downside here, and it is a small one, is that I joked about this blurb on Twitter and someone replied with a “You’re off the case, turn in your badge and wand joke,” and I was immediately furious I didn’t think of it first.
2. The Get (CBS)
A team of tireless internet journalists pursues and exposes stories of injustice using their unconventional investigative techniques in today’s anything-goes world of reporting.
The first thing I, an internet journalist, do when I wake up in the morning is go to the bathroom. Then I have a quick breakfast, maybe some healthy oatmeal or Pop-Tarts (it’s Pop-Tarts), while I scroll through Twitter, Facebook, CNN, Reddit, the Hollywood Reporter, etc. When I find something that piques my interest, I write about it. Before I know it, it’s three in the afternoon, I haven’t left the bed (except to go to the bathroom again and maybe eat some leftover pizza for lunch), and I’m still wearing the same pair of nasty gym shorts that I fell asleep in. I hope that’s what The Get is about. Anything goes!
3. Insatiable (The CW)
When a disgraced, dissatisfied civil lawyer-turned-beauty pageant coach (Dallas Roberts) takes on a vengeful, bullied teenager as his client, he has no idea what he’s about to unleash upon the world.
Look, anyone can be anything. Are you an airline pilot who wants to serve fast food burgers? You can do it! Are you a janitor at a fancy Boston college who thinks you’re meant to be a rocket scientist, or whatever happens to Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting? Why not! Insatiable takes this idea to the extreme. As far as premises go, “civil lawyer-turned-beauty pageant coach” is a thing of beauty. It’s like the creator couldn’t settle on the professions, so she randomly flipped through the phonebook and landed on “civil lawyer” and “beauty pageant coach.” (I don’t care if it’s “inspired” by a real-life story — it’s still hilarious.) If Insatiable doesn’t work, everyone can try again next year on Unquenchable, about a marine biologist-turned-monster truck driver.
4. Wisdom of the Crowd (CBS)
Based on the Israeli format of the same name, and inspired by the notion that a million minds are better than one, a tech innovator (Jeremy Piven) creates a cutting-edge crowdsourcing hub to solve his own daughter’s murder, as well as revolutionizing crime solving in San Francisco.
Jeremy Piven plays a billionaire who is solving his daughter’s murder with science. I freaking love it. I can see him now, butting heads with the old school cops who wants to solve crime the old fashioned way, hitting the streets and working sources and such. “
PIVEN: Umm, actually, my app has already triangulated the killer’s location.
OLD SCHOOL COP: What’s this guy talkin’ about?
PIVEN: [Jeremy Piven face]
5. Young Sheldon (CBS)
The series follows The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage) at the age of 9, living with his family in East Texas and going to high school.
The Big Bang Theory is a very popular show. The actors have been nominated for a million Emmys (and made millions of dollars), and despite being 10 seasons in, 19 million people regularly tune in to see what sort of wacky misadventures Howard and Rajesh are getting into this week. That’s a lot of millions. I get why CBS executives want to keep the Big Bang train a-rollin’ — especially with the stars getting increasingly expensive — but to paraphrase Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park, they were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should. They shouldn’t, but they did, and now something called Young Sheldon will probably bring in five times as many viewers as The Good Place. Maybe we’re living in the Bad Place?
The Potentially Great and Definitely Goofy
1. Untitled Marc Cherry Project (ABC)
Ruby Adair (Reba McEntire), the sheriff of colorful small town Oxblood, KY, finds her red state outlook challenged when a young FBI agent of Middle Eastern descent is sent to help her solve a horrific act. They form an uneasy alliance as Ruby takes the agent behind the lace curtains of this Southern Gothic community to meet an assortment of bizarre characters, each with a secret of their own.
I’m not sure exactly how this will play out but all I can picture right now is the first season of True Detective but with Reba McEntire as Rust Cohle. It’s all you can picture now, too, I bet. You’re very welcome.
The One Show Each Writer Cares Way Too Much About
Brian: Dynasty
I’m interested in Dynasty for two reasons:
One, it’s produced by Josh Schwartz, who created The O.C. and has solid history when it comes to fun dramas about rich families with problems.
Two, the last time someone tried to reboot a popular ’80s show about a troubled wealthy family, it was TNT’s version of Dallas, which gave us the single greatest GIF in TV history: Judith Light snorting cocaine at a rodeo.
TNT
Josh: Every “Untitled” series
Did I watch a single episode of AMC’s Untitled Billy Corgan Wrestling Project?
Nope.
Do I know if Untitled Billy Corgan Wrestling Project even made it to air?
No clue.
But three years later, am I still obsessed with Untitled Billy Corgan Wrestling Project?
Of course. Because it’s called Untitled Billy Corgan Wrestling Project!
I’m actually fascinated by all Untitled [Name or Collection of Words] Projects, and this fall has some gems. There’s the aforementioned Untitled Marc Cherry Project, as well as Untitled Paul William Davies Project, Untitled Single Dad Project, Untitled Jenny Lumet Project, Untitled Navy SEAL Project, Untitled Marvel Action-Adventure Series, and Untitled University Project. Do I plan on watching any of these shows? Other than the Marc Cherry one and maybe whatever Marvel is brewing, of course not. But would I check out Untitled Single Dad Project if it stayed with that title, and not switch to something generic, like Bad Dad? You bet. Also, #BringBackUntitledBillyCorganWrestlingProject.

Drunk History
Ed, Edd ‘n Eddy
Elimidate
Everybody Loves Raymond
Farscape
Father Ted
Friends
Futurama
Get Smart
Ghostbusters
Gilmore Girls
Gravity Falls
The Great British Bake-off (or any cooking show)
Grey’s Anatomy (I can’t believe this is still on the air; I have like 10 years to catch up on. Warning: it’s a hospital show, so people do die. Deeennnnnnny!)
