gah another 5 am post eh fellas

fuck i really wanna do ballet. i really rarely become obsessed (if ever) with anything, but for once i’m so so so so soso wanting to do ballet. so bad. i know i might hate it bc im fucing not musical at all, so not in shape, so not comfortable or etc. but at least im 18,(wait fuck 19 now) and not 45 trying to get in it all stiff and stuck and i think based on all the sweet positivity to adult ballet starters beginners and sure i wont perform professionally but fuck man i dont think i need that. i just want that grace and flexibility and elegance and gah itd be fabulous. i mean even now im pretending to look for turn out and walk around the house like they do in point shoes and i try fix my posture tothe advice by a ballet dancer youtuber who ive been watching so much of. i just i really wanna do it.

saddest fucking thing is guys, that i could’ve had the chance to go to the fucking royal ballets adult absolute beginner classes. in london. i could have. fuck. u wanna know what happened? i found out about it like a month or two ago and was fucking psyched bc its one of those things that just is too good to be true. the best company in uk?? w adult classes? while im in london?? yeah id have to miss a few weeks bc. whoops i gotta go back up to do my exams,but i couldve at least done a few weeks, come back and done a few last so i’d have had the best opportunity to give this a go in the best environment and then have a kindling to go off with to other available ballets. and not start with some barely managing person in a shitty studio thing. idk. sure so i tell my parents so fuckin excited bc look! its possible! but yeah its expensive, wouldve been abt 90 pound w me being a student and id have to miss 3/10 classes. but still! thin of it gah its making me so sad happy. sad bc guess its now sold out. of fuckin course it is. i told my mom and she just was uhmm ohh i dunno i dunno, oh its adults i could do it, and thinking that maybe getting her involved would mean i have a better chance of going, dont care much for her company but if shed take it as a bonding thing hell, i’ll probably do better than her in class and minor confidence boost as well as if they all others are old old i wont be alone. and she could pass over what they learned when im up in scotland. Guess that was a fuckin mistake. she got all nervous and self concious and put it off with a we’ll see we’ll see about it im thinking. and making it a whole thing like instead of me wanting to go so bad and offering for fun that shed join me, as if im trying to pressure her into doing it and would only go along to make her feel better. uh.... fucking wrong! im so mad actually. bc of course, no matter how often i mentioned it she wouldnt take it seriously to even consider booking me in! no no of course not we’ll see. and then i check before im coming back, dreading and being right that yep. theyre fucing sold out. of course they are its such a fanstastic opportunity! my only fucking opportunity! when ever again am i going to live in london with weeks free to go participate in that? when ever again? never. theyre moving out of london this summer and fuck. just doing some research and the scottish ballet is in fucking glasgow. yes i was supposed to get there if i hadnt been so shit with studying for my exams. (sure i wouldnt be doing archery and wouldnt have all the other wonderful things i now enjoy in aberdeen but fuck its frustrating) and ofc. aberdeen seems to have: one shady dance company that offers ballet fusion. not adult ballet classes. another shady school that practices at robert gordons that have no website nothing. no info how to sign up or if they have adult classes or when its so stupid and weird. maybe ill have to contact them directly idk. sure my uni has a what seems to be a thriving dance society that i have a glitched out membership for. (its 50 pound a year and i have cerrainly not paid that) and i guess they do ballet on the side. but again from a glance around, looks its only intermediate. not beginners. dont think theres that many uni age girls who just wanna start ballet now.

so it looks bleary. even in finland, i cant understand body parts in finnish so that might just be frustrating if i could even find a place that offers it. not that i’ll have long at all in finland. ill be there barely a month before heading back to uni and i come back holidays. if i wanted to take one of these eleven week courses, i think id have to geta fuckin liscence and a car and drive to glasgow 3 hrs both ways for a class once a week and that sjust stupid. im so fucking mad about this missed opportunity. like my muscles are itching and aching to do it. my legs want to work out in ballet positions. they just rly do. yeah maybe ill have to start doing barre at home from videos to try ease that, but its not gonna be the same and ill do it all wrong bc i have no teacher to direct me or anything. correct either. sure if i had done it and loved it i might still be mad that i have no opportunities to continue like i want to, but at least id have that expereince and could keep practicing at home based off of it. i am genuinely upset okay. upset betrayed disappointed sad twitchy and ugh. sure tickets go on sale today to swan lake after exams. and by fuck will i go see it. and ill get all the background before it and know it inside and out before i see it (already kinda do) and i will love it. ill bemaybe more upset and more twitchy that i cant do it, that i cant be lie them and that rly sucks. i really really wish by some miracle the school would offer summer courses so that i could just, get myself after exams into one. also another frustrating thing not quite so pressing on my mind is how my dad wants me to get summer jobs, maybe even two. one here and one in finland. sure it should theoretically be easier getting it here, esp. since im 19 now and yeah. i could work in a cafe or store just to get money and have smth to put on a cv thats not 2 weeks. but i dunno i dont particularly want to, i was hoping in london i could get the most of it culturaly (considering ive been a pouting and sad whailer whos not done anything for the last two years) then again i have p much no friends here so if i did go work somewhere theres a slight chance thered be someone i get along with and could hang out w. or visit if i needa back in london. i dunno. things are weird. sure i could try get an admin job w nhs like some lady suggested but its one of those too much responsibilty things, consdiering im shit with work i kinda would prefer to do some physical job like stacking shelves in a shop bc im good at that. but thats not gonna help me in the future. money yes, but cv building or careers wise? nah. i should owrk in hospitality or smth i dunno even i can barely get thru my work to pass rn so i dunno about job searching. im jsut a mess am i not. regardless maybe i should look if theres other ballet schoolsin london. be desperate, get a job and a ballet class going over summer and do art on the free time i guess.

okay so fer now ive found a course for like fucking 156 pound thats a 2 day full days course that looks mad cool for having different classes to learn vocab and etc and then a bit of fucking swanlake like yooo.. best thing its in like july but thats also possibly bad bc its july 28-29 and july 30 we move out. man it could be cool tho. then they offer there as well a taster session p much every other week and then a full 8 weeks of class p near by to me. sure this is specifically taught by a man and id prefer a woman but, i guess. since its ideal timing and place. and i got wondering why thats 150 and the national ballet wouldve been abt 90 and i guess there i get concession and it wouldve been only 6 classes considering the dates they had off. i should rly ask if they do do concession bc 150 is a bit steep still. for 8 classes thats almost 20 pound for 75 mins. its kinda insane. theres probably more companies i havent looked at but there is one other thats like a drop in thing 10 pound cash each class and thats a 90 mins so it might be better. ofc. obv. fault being that its drop in so being an absolute beginner w likely a lot older adults idk how id fit in or keep up or get hte most of it. i think ill go try it once regardless. then when back in abdn ask around for taster sessions and beginner ballet. worst comes to worst i wait another 4 years till i get to a big enough city that they have a nice ballet company and somewhere i can live like an adult but also get in on adult ballet and enjoy myself. maybe my industrial placement city will have a ballet company idk.

all i know is that im a bit obsessed and everyone says to go for your dreams etc. and as much as i enjoy archery (slowly gonna dedicate to it) and aikido (though training can be frustrating and training with old men isnt that fun) and ice skating is another less of a dream but in the same realm as ballet. that im gonan get new skates for and give it a better try. i just think ballet could be so fucking rad and im sad that its not so easy rn. and that my mom fucked me over. for that one course that couldve been cheap and amazing and mindchanging. to go to the ballet knowing what some of it feels like would be great. sure id love a chance to do some after as well u know. ofc it sucks it might cost a couple hundred over summer to these hobbies and i feel iffy spending 180 on a quality waterproof jacket. sure. they spend it but, im v concientious and dont wanna spend much of their money esp cus im not making my own. i guess logically, i should put a bunch of effort to getting thru this term rly well without lies and get a sumemr job. that way, i could theoretically take loan from my parents and pay back with summer job money w some left over to do as i like with (yeah i should save it for sensible shit but idk) also considering how nice i am my dad might not even want me to pay back. look i dunno. thats an idea. be good, be rewarded w ballet classes and an unstrained relationship w my parents, joyously move back to finland and start next term w a clean slate, hopefully more help and new determination into hobbies. maybe i wanna do 4 sports since i never did much as i was younger. tho sure, i did aikidos cousin taekwondo. ive shot a bow and arrow whenever i had a chance. ive skated since literally like 3 yrs old. and i used to take a form of dance a alot younger. sure no musicality but i think the exercises would be great for my knees and legs and butt and torso and posture. htese are fun sports since i dont like to work out. and since im not comfortable enough in myself to go swim.

I wanted to rant on dyslexia, sorry this is shitty, I can’t put my thoughts into words but.

I just wanted to say stuff, so what better way to do so than post it to my 3 followers. I wanted to talk about dyslexia, this is just something i wanted to rant about. If you don’t like it, just go away. I have dyslexia, it’s a learning disability if you didn’t know, or have been living under a damn rock. The average person when they hear this, think, “oh isn't that when you switch your letters around”? or “so your stupid”? I’ve gotten the first one said to me every time. This rant will be all over the place too btw. Anyway, that’s not the case really. Dyslexia isn't just me sitting here switching my damn letters around, sure that’s a small part of it, maybe not even a part of it for some, or more than a small part of it for others. Dyslexia is different for everyone, but I’m just gonna talk about my type of it because otherwise this would be too long. My dyslexia affects the way I read, write, spell, understand, etc. These seem like small things, so what if you can't do them, am i right?! No, Really that’s not true, heres a conversation I’ve had 1 million times:

Person: So what if you can’t do those things?! I can’t dance, and you can!

me: Ok but do you NEED to dance in everyday life???? Answer: No you don’t, I’m sitting here in the middle of my classes listening as hard as I can, but not understanding one bit. Teachers get tired of me saying I don’t get it, they have even told me “just fake it”. WHAT IF IT EVER OCCURRED TO YOU, THAT I ACTUALLY WANT TO LEARN WHAT OTHERS DO TOO? I LOVE learning, but I can never get the education I NEED. People with more accomidations needed for thier disablity, will get a para, or more attention I’d say. Which is so wonderful and makes me happy that they can learn, at their own pace. I’m stuck in the middle of learning disabilities with my form of dyslexia. So people will offer to help, over the fact that they HAVE to help me, because of my 504. But they will not help in a useful way for me. Sure, maybe Emily will understand ur help, but I won’t get it till you explain this 1000 more times, in a simple and understandable way. I want to learn, but I’m here getting told by teachers “we can’t help you with that” and then dropping out of school because I can’t learn in a place where u don’t even try to help me at the leasT! Now, I'm at a school that will try to offer me help, by telling me “hey, heres a 50 page book, go study that and u will get an A!”. HUNNY. NO. STOP TELLING ME TO STUDY LIKE OTHERS. ITS NOT THAT I DONT THINK I CAN. I. CANT. WHEN I take a look at a book, I don’t see these simple understanding sentences like the rest of this class. I see jumbles of lines with no meaning, It is a fact that reading will give me a headache, focusing so hard on something I can’t understand like a book? Is like telling a person to try to think of a new color. The most annoying thing I will always hear till the day I die is:

“You know how to do it”

or “you are acting lazy”

No. I don’t know how to do this, why the hell do you think I’m asking? Sure it may be me asking for the 50th time, but I never understood it those 50 times, so please explain again. If you find it annoying or perhaps MAYBE IM JUST LAZY??? Than THERES THE dOOR biTCH. BECAUSE IM Working harder than anyone in this class, I can PROMISee you that. Every class is like a battle, sometimes I cannot even look up, because everywhere I look is letters, and because of that I will always get headaches.

I had wanting to be in a spelling be since I was in first grade, I always thought I’d be the smart one in class about all that stuff. Instead I’m sitting here getting called out on spelling the word “cat” wrong. But apparently me spelling things like that wrong was not bad enough. I was not given ANY help for my dyslexia when I was younger, because I was told “my grades are not bad enough” Are all dyslexics stupid now?? LOL we are dyslexic with As or Fs anyway it goes, we still have dyslexia! Don’t tell me my grades are not low enough. But now that I’ve gone into harder subject and learning, my grades are more than low enough. I am so happy and proud of myself for trying my best everyday, I don’t need a letter to tell me weather I did well or not. so what if all my grades are below D? I am doing my best and that’s what matters.

I’m working so damn hard, I do everyday, even if you refuse to give me the education I need, I keep going and always try. I want this to change and I want help more than anything. I wish my form of dyslexia had a magic way of learning that would work for me. But it’s not gonna happen right now, so I will just keep on talking about it.

I did not wake up some day and ask to be born with so many things that make it hard for me to go through daily life, It could be worse? Sure. But that’s not what I’m focusing on. I’m focused on the fact that Dyslexia should never be seen as something easy, relatable, funny, because it’s not. I will cry for hours on end asking why? Why can I not learn all these things while others in my class scream out loud “OH THIS IS EASY”. I cup my hands over my ears to block out your stupidity tbh.

No, I’m not just some person who reads words backwards and mixes my letters every so often. This is so much more than that for me, it controls my life, because yes, I am in school for 9 hours a day + homework. All of these hours require understanding, reading, and writing at the least. I could wish and wish to be smarter and more understood everyday, that won't help anything tho. My dyslexia is not something you can “specialize in” sure, maybe you can try to understand it a bit more. But unless you are me? You will never know or understand how it is.

I only learned how to use punctuation decently, a year ago. Because I never was taught in a way I could understand. I went to tutoring everyday for 2 hours, but everything she said still made no sense. I don’t even know how to say my feelings on my dyslexia, It’s hard. No I can’t remember what we learned yesterday or 2 hours ago. I don’t get what we are learning I really do not. Stop assuming, after the 60 times i tell you, that I know it, and understand it. I’ve said it so often, what makes you think I’m kidding, can you not absorb that information? I learn different and I want to be able to be taught in that different way, because I want the education that 99% of the kids in this school get. how do you think “fake it till you make it” is gonna look on my job application? Who's fault was it, because its sure not my fault for being told that 1000 times.

Please stop telling me my As look like 9s and that its funny that I can't tell right from left. God what good are you doing?

I will spend my whole entire day on school work I never get finished, While we have 20 assignments the class has already done? I’m stuck with only 3 of them done and turned in on time.

May I just add, I don’t like when people call dyslexia a “mental illness”. It’s a learning disability, AND LEARNING DISABILITY isn't a bad word! It’s real and something that I’m apart of. I might make no sense typing all this, maybe I only understand what I’m trying to say. But we people we not asked to be this way, we don’t ask for this, its not something thats trendy.

My dyslexia is a part of me, no matter how much I hate it, I would never change it, (maybe a little ehemm) but still. I didn’t get all I wanted to say out, only about half of it.

This is the end and ya, my Dyslexia is not simple, it never will be. I am gonna keep doing my best and working my ass off for the well worth Fs I get in class, because I just want to spread awareness that people like us, are out there. It may not be something you think of, or think about learning about or supporting tons. But I will keep on talking about it, because its real, so thanks.

ok so miguel was voted off 5-4-1 miguel/ME??/luke. the four people who voted me were stephen / ally / jess / luke. thankfully, i could count on the Kato 2.0 people on having my back. we also just made an alliance!!! because FUCK my og alliance with stephen/ally/(and karthik). and I STILL HAVE AN IDOL.

ok i'm just shook. i lowkey thought maybe alyssa was playing me but.. she wasnt. she saved me and i owe her for that. i hope it doesnt really hurt her position in the game but she's by far playing the best i think.

i'm just shook. i'm not mad at anyone. i apologize for how i acted post-tribal but oMGGGfgGgG these BITCHES|!!! it's the game tho, and i hope i can keep on kicking and swinging cuz im gonna fight tooth and nail in this game.

Ummm so about that fucking vote. WTF IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?! WE HAD THE CHANCE OF TAKING OUT A FORMER WINNER AND A PROVEN CHALLENGE BEAST! I'm convinced the IQ of this person who flipped is a -20 because.. that was the stupidest move in the existence of Tumblr Survivor..... and I'm the QUEEN of the House of Stupid Moves. I can declare it.

I'm not 1000% sure right now who it is but I have two guesses.

My first guess is: It was Ally.

Reasons: 1. Ally has admittedly worked with Zach in another Survivor game. 2. She also arguably had the MOST contact out of everyone with Zach all day. 3. She possibly wants to pin this vote on Alyssa to break up any possible alliance between myself/Stephen/ Alyssa. 4. She wants to break up me and Alyssa 5. The group of Karth/Zach/Ally is a thing?

My second guess is: Alyssa Reasons: 1. If Zach left she is the next biggest threat here. 2. She wanted a shield. 3. She's trying to build as many relationships with people as possible to cover her social fucking ass. 4. She hates me and wants to off me and will use Zach to kill me in this game.

Wow!! An attempted blindside gone wrong. This was really exciting and fun. These are the reasons I play this game for, finally happy to see these happening. A lot of lies and betrayal all of which is understandable but these things has got me pumped up. I am going to play with my emotions and they have triggered me. Time to start playing the game and play it hard. An attack on Zach is an attack on me, so they better be prepared to handle my rage.I feel this was a very good tribal in terms of the game as it makes its future bright and exciting. Luke....what are you doing??? Everything that has come to out of his mouth so far has been a lie. I just cant believe the way he is playing, no where close to what I was expecting from him.

Plot twist: I've heard some recent developments about the flipped vote.

According to Tim it was Luke? Oh? Buddy.... has officially been put on my "Shit List" in this game. You can't sit around and play both "sides" of this game. THAT'S MY JOB.

I'm not too sure how I'm going to break this to Ally. She might not believe me but I KNOW I NEED TO TELL HER.

Also: I still don't get why sooo many people trust Tim. I know Tim doesn't trust me anymore or maybe... not as much as he used to. BUT why did he tell Zach right away about the Miguel vote yesterday? IT ALL SEEMS SO SKETCHY.

Being thrown in the basement has given me an opportunity to reflect on some things in the game. I was kinda flattered to be the winner of both "running the game" categories in Touchy Subjects. Unfortunately, that perception might cause the other players to plan more behind my back. I know from last vote that being in the basement before Tribal Council shouldn't impact things tooooo much for me. Still, I'd rather have the opportunity to talk with people whenever I want.

Speaking of last vote, I tried to blindside Zach! And it didn't happen. The original plan was Miguel, but things got switched up when no one seemed to bite into wanting him out. Ally wanted to get Tim instead, which signaled to me that she obviously didn't have a strong relationship with him. So I had to swoop in and say Zach should go instead because Tim is in one of my many alliances. Honestly I'm beginning to prefer the 4 Elements alliance over AJ's Angels because it's possible Alyssa was the one who flipped, and she's not telling me it was her. But after Touchy Subjects, I think I have a better chance against Karth in the end than I previously thought. He's viewed as inactive, which I personally disagree with, but that perception is very good for me.

Another alliance I'm in is the "Samurais" which I would have liked to call "The Resistance" but Luke had other plans. I honestly just view this alliance as a means to an end. That end being.... getting Zach out, SOON! Hopefully Ally has a case of tunnel-vision with getting Zach out as soon as possible and her/Luke don't suspect a thing when I flip right afterwards.

All of this is contingent on Jess feeling the same way, since flipping on my own wouldn't get me the numbers, which I think she will now that she sees the other players view Karth as being dragged to the end.

I'm still in the basement, so I don't know who the 2 sides are voting for. I doubt Zach sent me down here because he wants me to find an advantage... so I could be a target. I hope Karth and Tim would keep that from happening, and push the vote onto Luke instead. I might prefer to get Jake out just because I don't have a strategic relationship with him, but beggars can't be choosers. It's not like I'm particularly close with Luke anyway.

Ok so sorry for not making confessionals as often as I did before!! The game has literally been warped based off of the fist merge vote. Zach was targeted by Stephen, Ally, Luke, and JESS. Freaking Jess flipped on me when I thought we were really tight and cool. I played off my frustration with the others in the alliance of the 4 elements as understanding but I made moves. I first formed that allaince but now I formed an allaince of Kato 2.0 minus Miguel ofc. Tonights vote I want to do Luke but lets see. I will talk about challenge results soon as well!!

so that's interesting. i did a tentative game ranking and originally i put: alyssa > zach > ally > karthik > stephen > jake > jess > tim > luke

but now i'd put: alyssa > ally > karthik > zach=stephen > jake > jess > tim > luke but it's still super tricky to accurately rate because of the multiple factors you could include (threat size, potential to win, potential to go to FTC, allies, etc.). i honestly think my jury management is 0/2 so far, and that i will lose at FTC due to ''not working with people'' even tho i entirely blame others for that :D

now let's talk about the reasonings for voting me (hopefully i haven't spoken about this already): stephen - were worried about a potential idol play/new vote so they voted the "safer option", named zach. --> this kinda throws me off. i think it's realistically the most truthful of the 4 excuses, but it's kinda sad that my name was a ''safe'' vote opposed to someone having my back (because i have tried to work with them and especially like. jess.) ally - felt betrayed by the stephen w. vote and like i ignored her. --> i think this is dumb. firstly, girl, we kno u are STRATEGIC. secondly, i didn't ignore her whatsoever?? i was the closest to flipping imo but i didn't because stephen w. targeted ME? like if she genuinely voted me bc i didnt flip after my name was stephens main target (bar jake) then... sister idk what u want. luke - last minute scramble, didn't think i was getting many votes. --> well this is just false. point, blank and period. jess - that when she offered miguel's name, i was hesitant and freaking out (and that she wanted to be my number one opposed to number two). --> dumb. i told her miguel's name. i said it'd be sad but i'd be down and not willing to stick my neck out for miguel. maybe i came off poorly, sure, but if you truly wanted 2 be my ''number one'' u shouldnt make the vote me but rather someone else.

i'm just peeved.

on top of that, karthik is sooo rude??? like he didn't tell me shit about the basement until i confronted him. LIKE. but, that's all in the past. let's talk about tonights vote. allegedly, stephen told tim that the target was going to be me, but due to immunity, jake is now the target. this makes a little sense given allys been wanting jake out the absolute MOST, but i feel like it'd be a decoy. don't matter tho xx i'm safe. alyssa is also apparently flipping (or, staying i guess) with our side and voting out luke - who is our sides target. i see logic in voting luke. he'll be the easiest of that side to get out, but on the other hand, he's the least threatening and if i'm going to flip someone, it'll be easier to flip people against ally (best liar, etc.) or stephen (running the game, etc.) opposed to luke (voted out next, don't want 2 see win, etc.). but have it be known that i'd CRAVE idolling out stephen or ally, and i may just do that.

After a shocking touchy feelings, I’m feeling nervous about this tribal. No one is saying anything and I’m honestly feeling like I’m going home tonight. People are telling me I shouldn’t be and I want to believe them but I just don’t know.

ugh I want to save Luke but I cant afford to lose Tim/Jake/Zach's trust so I may have to just follow the groups preferences and vote Luke. I would rather have preferred the target to be Jess/Alyssa as they seem to be playing good games and aren't close to me. i don’t like how i’m so needy all the time. i don’t like how insecure i am. i don’t like how angry and jealous i stay all the time whether you know it or not. i don’t like how soft and sensitive i am. everything has the potention to hurt my feelings if the right diction is used and it’s so fucking stupid. i don’t want to be this... pathetic. i feel absolutely pathetic. i have such a tendency to over react and get so upset or stupid trivial shit.

i hate how my depression makes me look, act, and seem. i hate that it makes me appear and feel so absolutely worthless. and i get the same lecture from everyone. “stop using it as a crutch, it’s all in your head, stop letting it control you.” im not trying to used it as a crutch. i know it’s all in my head, it’s a MENTAL illness. i’m not letting it do anything, it does control me. how am i supposed to operate like a normal person when i couldn’t really give two shits if i saw the light of day tomorrow. and it’s so frustrating to feel constantly undermined because it.

shit that’s supposed to be normal like showering more than once every 2-3 days, getting up before noon, cleaning, having more than one meal a day, talking to friends on a regular basis; all that shit feels like huge victories to me for a moment, and the second i come back down and realize that people do that every day without thinking twice, and do way more, just.. snatches my little victories away. i’m not happy about them anymore, im just embarrassed that i got happy about it in the first place.

i don’t like my body. ever since i had scarlett, i just.. i hate looking in the mirror at me. like all that my body was worth got used up to carry a kid i never wanted and now i’m stuck with the remains. i don’t feel sexy, i don’t feel beautiful, i don’t feel like a woman unless i’m around you honestly. and to be completely honest? i hate that dependency. i love you, and i love the way you make me feel. emotionally and physically. i just wish i could love myself when you’re not there to do it for me.

i don’t like being a mom. i never wanted it. i don’t want the responsibility, i don’t want the heart break of watching her get older. i don’t want the inevitable fights when she’s a teen. i don’t want to resent her as much as i do because she didn’t ask to be here. it’s all my fault that i made her, and i feel like she has to suffer for it. me and my mom got into it tonight because apparently all i do is move her from her bed to her play pen every day. but it’s not true. they don’t see me and her when i have her in the floor, playing with her toys with her. or chasing her up and down the hallways over and over and over again. they see her when they get home and i’m tired. they see her in it when my depression catches up to me and i’m too demotivated to make one more fucking silly face or sippy cup.

i don’t feel like i’m good enough to be her mom. she deserves better than me and i know it. and i absolutely hate myself because of it. i don’t like how much i dislike being a mom. i WANT to want to be a good mom, because she deserves the best and i just know that’s not me.

i really don’t have much to say here. i like my eyes, my tits, my music taste, my little side. i like my imagination. i like my sense of humor and my ability to adapt it depending on who i’m talking to. i like my willingness and readiness to be there for some people.

i like my empathetic heart. i enjoy talking to people about their thoughts and problems and stuff and being able to understand. i like being able to find something to talk about with anybody because my interests and music taste and random shit i know about is so diverse. i like who i am when i smoke weed a lot. there’s nothing wrong with me in that hour or two. everything’s fun and funny and relaxing. i’m happy then.

ever since you brought up the thing about my putting your noodles in a bowl, about me being thoughtful, i’ve started noticing how much i actually do it. and i love it. i feel like it’s my one redeeming quality.

i don’t like how your word is 100%, no questions, law. like i understand that’s how most of the daddy/master/owner stuff works. but at the same time, there’s some things that i want to talk about and discuss because you bang the gavel down. like my rules, or how i should handle some situations. i got some opinions that i just want at least considered sometimes.

i don’t like how you take out your stress and anger on me. you’ve gotten so so so soooo much better since we first got together but it’s one of my big things. i understand being irritable, and snappy, but sometimes you’re just outright.. mean. and i know it’s not intended but it bothers me a lot when it happens. it makes me feel like i’ve done something wrong, when i haven’t. and i know i haven’t. but because of my (again) depression and anxiety, i second guess myself and over think and end up getting my feelings hurt like always.

i don’t like how consistently platonic you are with me when we aren’t face to face. i don’t want you to feel like you have to constantly cater to me, but saying something sweet or cute a couple times a day would help. it’s just my brain doing its thing again. “he’s not being sweet/nice/flirty with me, what if he’s not interested in me anymore?” and i really really really hate that i am that way. and i hope you see that i’ve been working on it.

i don’t like how you have rules for me but you don’t even come remotely close to following them yourself. drinking water, sleep schedule, eating ever day, and the journal. you don’t drink or eat the way you should. there’s no excuse for the drinking, but i understand the food and you should too. we don’t keep food either. if they aren’t here cooking, i’ve gotta dog through empty cabinets too. every now and then there’s shit to eat on for a couple days but more often than not, there isn’t. and you say you want to pick my brain, and stuff but i feel like i’m never gonna get to do my picking.

i don’t like how worried i am that you’re never gonna let me in. you have me writing all this but i feel like i’m never going to get it in return. it just feels like a double standard. you don’t let try to help you with things you go through. you told me the other night you’ve been having a depressive episode thing for like 3 weeks now and i had no idea. i want to help. it’s all i’m good at. it makes me feel useful instead of like burden. because i dump all my thoughts and feelings and shit on you but i can’t help you too whenever you might need it. i know you’re strong, and independent and you can do it alone. but i don’t want you to feel like you have to anymore.

Good Stuff-

where the absolute fuck do i even start. when we’re face to face you are the most loving and caring person i’ve ever been with. you listen to all my stupid problems without bitching about doing it. you carry all the bags. you make me laugh and play with me. even when you’re playing your game you find time for me whether it be on the phone or holding me while you play.

seeing you with scarlett makes my whole heart happy. i know you love her. and it makes me just.. unbelievably happy. you’re so good with her and patient and knowledgeable and everything in a parent i wish i was. and it’s not your job to be. you don’t HAVE to be that way with her in this stage of our relationship but you want to be. and it’s so amazing to me.

i love our routine. text or call before you go to work, occasional texts or calls through your work night, and then phone until bed. it makes me feel like you think about me and want me there, no matter the situation. when we have a day that’s just too hectic for us to talk much, it completely throws me off. i don’t know what to do with myself lol i’m just glad that you take the time to make me feel like you want me around as much as you can have me there.

i love everything you’ve done for me and scarlett. i love our talks. i love falling asleep on the phone with you. i love how we just casually enjoy each other. even through all the bullshit you’ve seen me go through and all the bullshit we’ve been through together in this short amount of time, i feel the closest thing i’ve felt to peace in a long time when i’m with you. you want me to do and be better and you see it in me. and instead of giving up you’re pushing me and i honestly could let ask for a better support, lover, or friend. i love you so much, dylan

The death of Anthony Bourdain: Thoughts on productivity, pleasure, and depression

Shares 141 Warning: This is a rare GRS post that contains salty language. If you dont like salty language, dont read this article. Anthony Bourdain killed himself Friday morning. So what? you might be thinking. Hes just another fucking celebrity who didnt know how good he had it. Maybe youre right. But his death has weighed heavy on me all weekend. On Friday morning, as I wrote the weekly Get Rich Slowly email, I thought about Anthony Bourdain. On Friday afternoon, as Kim and I worked in the yard, I thought about Anthony Bourdain. On Friday evening, as we soaked in our new hot tub with a friend, I thought about Anthony Bourdain. Yesterday, I thought about Anthony Bourdain. Today, I thought about Anthony Bourdain. Now Im writing this article as an act of catharsis. Maybe itll help me to stop thinking about Anthony Bourdain. The Depression Trap I believe Anthony Bourdains death touched me deeply for a couple of reasons. I was a huge fan. Since listening him read the audio version of Kitchen Confidential a decade ago, Ive loved his work. Parts Unknown was probably my favorite travel show: raw and real and filled with food. Bourdain connected with everyone he met. His joy for life was contagious and his mind was sharp.Like Bourdain did, I struggle with depression. All my life, Ive experienced periodic descents into darkness. The first time this happened, I missed five weeks of sixth grade. In the nearly forty years since then, Ive developed a variety of coping mechanisms but they dont always work. In recent months since the middle of March the darkness has deepened and I dont know why. (And just as I missed five weeks of school back then, Ive been unable to get my work done in the present.) Let me make it clear that I am not suicidal. Right now, the biggest symptom of my depression is my inability to get shit done. But whereas suicide seems strange and senseless to most everyone else, depressives understand the appeal even if wed never consider it personally. One of the many stupid things about depression is that the condition doesnt care how awesome your life is. It doesnt care how successful you are. It doesnt care how much money you have. Depression is not rational. If it were, itd be easy to think your way out of it. Paula Froelich, one of Bourdains ex-girlfriends, put it like this:

Bourdains death didnt just make me introspective. It also led to a couple of interesting conversations about pleasure and productivity and about what really matters in life. The Productivity Trap Friday afternoon, I received email from a GRS reader well call Michael: Im sure you saw Anthony Bourdain killed himself. This to me was a telling quote: When asked during a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal whether he ever thought about stepping back from the breakneck pace of a job that kept him on the road 250 days a year, he replied, Too late for that. I think about it. I aspired to it. I feel guilty about it. I yearn for it. Balance? I fucking wish.' Obviously I didnt know Bourdain personally, or even know much about him as a public figure, but I think that mentality is common: Once youve become successful, the thought of ever ratcheting back seems unthinkable. Obviously, suicide is rare, but I think this mentality is common among successful people they stay in an unhappy status quo simply because they have so much invested in their self-image and public perception of themselves as successful people. I think Michael is onto something. Ive seen this in my own life, in the lives of friends and family, and the lives of colleagues. They fall into what you might call the productivity trap. (Heres an article I almost linked to the other day about the productivity trap: If youre so successful, why are you still working 70 hours a week?) I have one friend, for instance, with an enormously successful career. He has a popular blog, a popular podcast, best-selling books, and even an annual conference that attracts attendees from across the planet. Yet hes never satisfied not with himself nor with anybody else. Hes always looking for ways to make things bigger and better. He seems unhappy with who he is and what he has. Hes written publicly about his struggles with mental illness, but he hasnt revealed its full effects. Its not just my friend. Its me too. I see this pattern in my own life, and its something Ive deliberately decided to approach more mindfully. Why do I want to have a hot tub or travel to Ecuador? Why did I repurchase Get Rich Slowly and how often should I publish here? Why do I keep agreeing to public speaking gigs? Do I really want these things? Are they aligned with my personal mission statement? Will they really make me happy? (Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes the answer is no.) In his email, Michael continued: I think this is really the key to personal finance and early retirement actually stepping back and figure out what is important to you, and doing it, even if it seems like youre turning your back on a great career, or a nice house or whatever. That is the hardest part, which keeps most people in a life they dont want. They think I went to school X or work at company Y, so therefore I must live in this city or have that job or have that wardrobe and never ask themselves what, as individuals, makes them happy. The Pleasure Trap As our email conversation continued, Michael brought up another interesting point. He noted that our culture and this is especially true in the world of financial independence blogs is obsessed with experiences, such as travel. Yet in many ways, collecting experiences is no better (nor any different) than collecting things. Heres Michael again: [Bourdain] had the ne plus ultra of modern life: rich, famous, a job that 99% of the population would kill for, saw everything he wanted to see, ate everything he wanted to eat, Im sure slept with tons of women if that is what he wanted, took all the drugs he wanted. You name it, he had it. And, he hung himself in a hotel room in France, a twice-divorced man a continent away from his daughter and girlfriend. Im not bagging on him. I just think he illustrates something: A meaningful life doesnt consist of a series of cool experiences, or traveling or eating cool stuff. Bourdain did that stuff to an incredible degree, and it still didnt make him happy. I think that is what our society has forgotten. I feel like were always being told we should move a lot, travel a lot, be vaguely or overtly dismissive of the town or state we were born in, move for college and never move back homein short, basically be a free agent with fewer and fewer personal connections, or weaker connections. And, we get this [higher suicide rates]. [] I think this relates to personal finance. There is always this thought that thrift requires these huge sacrifices less travel, fewer new experiences, fewer new restaurants. But what if [these arent sacrifices]? What if irrespective of cost, that stuff isnt really a source of happiness? I mean, people accept that with respect to possessions nobody says a Cadillac or a 5000-square-foot home is the key to happiness but many, many people in our culture think new experiences are crucial to a happy life. It may be the opposite the continuity and free-time to invest in loving relationships may actually be the key to happiness. I told Kim about my conversation with Michael. Its the pleasure trap, she said. People fall for the lie that momentary pleasure equals happiness. But pleasure isnt the same as happiness. Shes right, of course. Happiness is like planting a garden, watching it grow, then enjoying the harvest. Pleasure is simply eating the fruit. Happiness is deeper and richer and longer lasting. Pleasure is fleeting; happiness is not. But happiness involves time and work and patience. Now, Ill admit: Im guilty as anyone else of falling into the pleasure trap, and in oh-so-many ways! I have to make a deliberate effort to look past immediate pleasure in order to consider long-term happiness. This often requires enduring unpleasant activities. Do I really want to go out in the cold and the rain to dig in the mud and plant my garden? No, not in this moment. Id rather sit in the hot tub. But if I dont plant the garden, Im sacrificing greater happiness in the future. Final Thoughts While I think that Kim and Michael are onto something the productivity trap and the pleasure trap are both real and both problematic I keep coming back to Anthony Bourdains battle with depression. During my recent road trip through the southeastern U.S., I talked with two friends who are fighting depression in their own lives. One friend has a spouse who cannot shake the condition despite counseling, despite exercise, despite a loving family. The other friend fights the condition himself and its led to weight gain and addictive tendencies. Therapy has helped some but its not a cure-all. As for myself, I havent yet returned to therapy although Im considering it. (Not so long ago, I spent a year working with a therapist to find ways to cope with anxiety and depression. It helped.) I want to stress again that I am not suicidal. But the depression has most definitely affected my daily existence, including my relationships, my health, and my work here at Get Rich Slowly.
