The Baroque in Jesuit Churches
The architects and painters of Il Gesù and Sant’Ignazio were masters of creating an effect that you literally have to see to believe. But all ways of seeing the interiors of these churches are not equal. I realized today that the full illusionistic effect of the ceilings in particular can only take place in person. I had studied Pozzo’s ceiling fresco in Sant’Ignazio before, but seeing it in person produced an entirely different effect. The attempt to evoke the experience of being in a three-dimensional scene through the use of a two-dimensional medium cannot be fully translated through photographs, which themselves are two-dimensional. I found myself wandering through Il Gesù’s nave, attempting to figure out exactly how the painted stucco figures could cast shadows on the gilded ceiling, and craning my neck in utter disbelief at Sant’Ignazio’s illusionistic ceiling dome, struggling to perceive it for the flat space that I knew it was. This experience of wonder - of awe - evoked by these masterful illusions cannot be realized without physically occupying these spaces.
Baciccio, The Triumph of the Name of Jesus, 1676-79. Fresco, Il Gesù, Rome.
Andrea Pozzo, illusionistic dome, 1685-94. Oil on canvas, Sant’Ignazio, Rome.
There are several reasons for this. Some of them are related to the mechanics of illusionistic painting - for example, Pozzo’s painted dome is only convincing if the viewer looks at it from certain angles. When standing in a different part of the church, it is clear not only that there is no dome, but that the ceiling previously believed to be one is actually flat. Another example is the glaze shadowing painted on the architecture of Il Gesù. Knowing that some of the architecture protrudes from the ceiling and walls, a person who views photographs of this church might reasonably conclude that these are real shadows cast by such protrusions. But by physically walking around the church and examining one of these shadows from all angles, the viewer realizes that it cannot be cast by the item that seems to be casting it, and that the shadow must be painted. These illusions can certainly be described to someone who has never entered the space, but experiencing them visually firsthand allows the viewer first to be “tricked” by the illusion, then to discover that this is the case - leading to a sense of amazement at these technological achievements.
Another reason that physically entering the space is necessary to experience the sense of wonder is that within the walls of these churches, the viewer’s senses are overwhelmed. As we discussed today, there are no central focal points in these spaces. They contain series of focal points and culminations, emphasizing the glory of God over and over again. As one physically journeys through one of these churches, one journeys through a series of illusions designed to engage and implicate the viewer. This allows for a sense of awe.

Day 18: our last excursion! Can’t believe it’s almost time to go home. We went to Quattro Fontane today and my group ended the day at Il Gesu church, which was absolutely breathtaking. #marianneseuropeanadventures #romepics #ilgesu #borromini #romepics (at Rome, Italy)
