Opinion on the Solrook ship? 👀

I like it, in theory. I ship it, in theory. I think there's some really great narrative potential with Solas and Rook, who as we know, are basically mirrors of each other. And that is super compelling, naturally.

It's in practice, where the ship becomes challenging. Mirrors, especially the kind that they present to each other, are uncomfortable to look at.

Solas looks at Rook and sees an allegedly idealized version of himself (more or less). A version that wouldn't sacrifice the ideals that form the bedrock of his lifelong rebellion against tyranny. A version that's stronger than him, spiritually, because they are more adaptable, and willing to take risks in a way Solas isn't (willing to be wrong).

As much as Solas admires that about Rook, he also kind of hates it. I mean, he's spent his entire long lived existence, forcing himself to believe that he knows what's right because he's afraid to be wrong, and what that would mean (that everything he's ever sacrificed has been unnecessary). And Rook forces him to contend with that reality. It's frightening in a way I think few people really appreciate. Rook represents a profoundly terrifying realization for Solas, and it's way easier to meet that with anger and combativeness rather than to just... accept it, let alone grapple with it to the extent that he could fall in love with Rook because of or in spite of it.

Rook on the other hand sees.. what? Themself, but worse? lol. What they might turn into if they let their convictions drop, or if they make too many excuses, or if they let pride and pragmatism overtake their compassion and morality? For Rook to look at Solas and fall in love with him despite that.. It's very "I can fix him", or maybe even "I can overlook that", lol, which is not me criticizing Rook, ik it sounds like I am, but what I mean to say is that it's just very ambitious, and love would never know more obstacles than those between Rook and Solas. Because, let's also not forget the parallel Solas and Rook draw in-game between their dynamic and Solas and Elgar'nan. In ways we can't ignore, if we're going to say that Solas and Rook can fall in love, then we have to look at how that might reflect from Solas and Elgar'nan's relationship, and that becomes very uncomfortable, doesn't it?

Now put your pitchforks down, because I'm not saying that they're the same thing. Solas and Elgar'nan are vastly different characters, and the only reason I even bring it up is just to illustrate the kind of gap Solas and Rook would have to cross to get to each other in a place of love and romance. It is not so extreme as Solas and Elgar'nan, but the parallel is made for a reason.

Aside from all of that, Solas in VG is more guarded than ever. And the very very last thing on his mind in that prison is love in that way. If you thought he played hard to get in Inquisition, babe you ain't seen nothing yet. But, as discouraging as this all must sound, I do actually see a path forward for them, even if that path is extremely narrow. I think the ship is... possible. And as a writer, I'm willing to explore that.

I tell this to all Rooks who come looking to ship with my Solas: It's going to be like playing Romance on legendary difficulty. If they're okay with the uphill battle of their fucking lives and no guarantee of success or a happy ending, then they are more than free to try their luck.

Also. I shan't name drop. But some people in this fandom are... less than desirable in the way they talk about and represent the ship, and that, imo, ruins a lot of the optics for shipping it, in the same way that the fandom at large has mishandled Solavellan so egregiously that it puts a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths just on instinct. But that's just my opinion.

In reality, I ship Solas with anyone who has chemistry with him, or at least the good potential for it, whomever that might be. It's that simple ♡

OOOO! The Clefairy/Gengar mix goes so well with them actually, especially with that theory that Gengar is essentially a ghost version of Clefairy. Sun and Moon match their vibes so well!

Honestly there's so many pokemon that it's a bit of a toughie to think of teams! But, imagining their teams as non-submas themed trainers and just their own goobers, I thinkkkk I'd set it up like this! ( Based off my own ooc ideas of the characters :3 )

Sun: Probably would work at a pokemon Nursery and/or focuses on doing Contests. (God I miss those-) I can't help but imagine Sun as someone with a caretaker personality, even if a little sassy, but he'd totally still be into theater no matter what universe!

Ambipom - I feel like this big ol' mon gives off goofy caretaker vibes, and with the extra set of large hands on its tails makes it extra helpful with wrangling and clean up. Plus, more hands mean more props and attacks for contests! It's definitely so playful that it can be a bit of a trouble maker, but when it's time to switch gears or follow rules, it is a stickler and can even be a little scary with how serious it becomes.

Togekiss (Raised from egg) - Okay, probably a bit of anime bias here but I love the little egg thing Togepi is and I feel like it would be perfect for Sun. Just one of the most baby pokemon around, lovely to raise, stubborn, and grows up into the most elegant thing ever. Perfect, muwah, would love to be on stage after demolishing a whole team solo with broken fairy typing.

Chimecho - Such a soothing pokemon. They help keep Sun from becoming anxious with their calm chimes and they're great at getting young pokemon to fall asleep or calm down after a tantrum. The calm to Sun's eccentric energy.

Gourgeist - Is it odd that I think this pokemon would be an amazing cook? Sun can definitely cook things for his pokemon well, but when he's overwhelmed, this buddy can whip up something delicious and even serve it with their psychic abilities to lower the workload. Generally friendly and is a little bit of a trouble maker when everyone's guard is down. Nothing dangerous, at least not on purpose, but all the kitchenware might go missing if someone forgets to say thank you.

Bellibolt - I'm still imagining Sun as an animatronic, so I feel like an electric type is just a requirement. Has the duty to be an emergency recharge, but besides that all this big guy have to do is be cute and happy. Just a gigantic stress ball that loves hugs, and Sun, pokemon, kids, and contest judges alike all love it. Just a silly chill lil guy.

Cinccino - This pokemon is well known for its cleaning habits. So besides being adorable and fluffy - a great cuddle buddy - they help keep the space nice and tidy. Cleanliness is just a must for Sun. Also, I love chinchillas and its a must to have one. It's cuteness and elegance makes it a fierce competitor during competitions but honestly a terrible battler; more worried about keeping itself clean and pretty instead of winning.

Moon: Possibly works as a pokemon ranger (based off the side games) and is a ace trainer that is reformed off an evil team. Idk, my views of his personality is very similar to Silver and well, we know his history with Team Rocket- anyways, I think having a similar background would make him very serious about battle and rescuing others/pokemon.

Banette - Likely to have been with Moon as his first pokemon. Banette's pokedex entries consider it as a vengeful abandoned doll, and seeing it's a tragic but powerful pokemon, I feel like it would be serious but clingy in the quietest ways. It will help Moon in any way it can as Moon adopted it from an evil team and showed it true care, but it does not like any other pokemon getting attention, giving death glares and silently pulling off nasty tricks when no one is looking. Their strong bond makes mega evolving effective in a pinch. (Lets just assume they got the stone somehow its okay bbg)

Ferrothorn - Ignore its stats, this gigantic thing should really be a tank and I am wishing it as one. They're spikey but have a caring nature, and with the way it clings to ceilings or raises its body above things with its noodle legs, it makes it very maneuverable and helpful when it comes to traversing harsh locations. It craves affection, so give em a good pat and they'll love you forever.

Scolipede - Poison Horse. I love it, and it can be amazing in battle if you do the right things. I'm not the best at forming a competitive team, but narrative wise, its thick exoskeleton makes it very durable, its ability to curl up and roll makes it very fast, and it's a great buddy to help move from place to place fast, even when holding 2 people on its back. Probably the most stubborn and self important of the group.

Inteleon - It may be ehhhh to put a starter on this list, but I feel like Inteleon is a mon that would be great in the ranger line of work. A water type is a must for handling fires and to douse any moody flare ups within a group. Plus, water is a must for all life, so it creates an emergency water source. It has great sight from a distance and probably would act more like a scout that will climb up from high areas and leap between large gaps to find whatever it is they're after today. Likes to go at things alone but only wants to provide as much as it possibly can.

Heliolisk - This pokemon is so cool and I don't see enough of it! Definitely a bit of a trouble maker with a childish attitude outside of work. Again, imagining Moon still as an animatronic in this universe, the necessity of having an emergency charge from an electric type seems like a must. It also is great as an emergency light source by holding in an electrical charge in its mouth/hands. However, the dry skin of this pokemon makes it durable, able to withstand extreme heat, and as a lizard it should totally be able to stick to walls, which makes it great for caves or for being a pokemon to rely on during sticky situations. (Budum-tissss) I always forget it's not a ground type, but in my heart it is.

Cofagrigus - This mon scares me so much that I love it. Just a creepy design, but also the amount of move sets and strategies this one pokemon can do is insane. IDK jack about competitive pokemon, but even I know that this is a pokemon to be weary of to go against. This'll probably be Moon's main battle pokemon, where his strategies during a full pokemon battle against a trainer would revolve around Cofagrigus. In reality though, this Cofagrigus is the most motherly towards the team and wrangles everyone into being orderly and just is the general problem solver with interpersonal problems.

If i'm honest, a lot of this list can be exchanged with different pokemon. I mostly chose these based off vibe and some based off typing, but there's probably better pokemon for them out there lol

For me, percussion is like being the mechanic of the band/orchestra what with all the weird stands and usually having too many parts for however many percussionists there are

i think when i was younger it was sheer curiosity? it's hard to pin it down. i've always been kind of magnetically attracted to instruments and just sort of jumped at any opportunity to play them, whether that be in elementary school music class to piano lessons to worming my way into the circle of old farts playing bluegrass together in the park on a weekend

and then i grew up and went to college. ultimately i gave up a lot of the instruments i used to play for various reasons and just stuck with oboe/english horn as my main (with piano and voice as somewhat distant secondaries). and like, the thing w/ playing in orchestra and being in music school is that you are really immersed in a world where music performance is kind of a given, it's just a fact of life, so if you're gonna live there for any amount of time and enjoy it, you have to find some reason to stick with it so that you don't burnout (because it is a LOT of, at times quite demoralizing, work). and i'll be honest, on its own, there isn't a ton about the oboe that inherently makes me like playing it? i'm so very shit at motivating myself to hit the practice room and do etudes and scales and long tones and all that guff, and if i'm being honest i kind of haven't done that since undergrad. but i still try to play regularly, i still want to play, and i still enjoy it -- just not locked in a little room all by myself.

now as an adult/semi professional musician, i definitely still play out of love for the art, but also the community of it, and a sense of, like, being useful. like, before i was anything else i was a pianist, but by high school i was mostly an accompanist rather than a soloist, and today i'm far more an ensemble player than a soloist (now i've shifted focus to almost solely oboe/english horn). and that's something that i've come to realize is a huge part of it for me -- i feel comfortable in a community of musicians, and i enjoy collaborating with them to make music. i am not particularly adept at playing solo, nor do i particularly enjoy it/am particularly comfortable with it. music is a social outlet for me, and while it definitely is a ton of work, i enjoy getting to put in that work for other people, and be supported by other people putting in work around me, and it all goes to a common goal. when i was younger i use think i hated group projects because i always got stuck doing all the work for everyone i got assigned to work with who didn't give a damn, but when i started playing in orchestra regularly i realized i actually love working in groups -- as long as everyone else knows what their part of the job is and fulfills it. i love getting to be a part of that, of doing my part of the group's work, that no one but me can do (well arguably any other oboist at roughly my skill level could do that, but the thing about oboists is that we're rather few and far between compared to a lot of other instruments). i like being reliable, i like doing work with and for people, i like being the guy that people will call on when they need some help with a music thing because they know they can count of me. i love feeling like i'm wanted. i love feeling like i'm part of the community. and the fact that i get to, on occasion, make some beautiful music on occasion is a real cherry on top

And first query second: I didn't! I went into CQL pretty much entirely blind –and really bc I knew it was in Mandarin and my friends were doing a watch party so I was like Oh I'll hang out and get some listening practice in! – and I had some REALLY good experiences for it. I did not even suspect the Thing with NHS and the friends I was watch partying with had a BLAST about this it was so funny reading the thread rewatchers were talking in after we finished the series bc I immediately LIKED NHS and I was going Omg yay NHS my perfect meetup boy right up until the Reveal during which I was like OH MY GOD???? MY PERFECT MEETUP BOY!!!!!!! and by god I've been Xiyao posting too much I need to NHS post again I love that guy so MUCH he's a solid favorite character contender and the first I recognized

The only thing I was ~spoiled on was Meng Yao getting a new name bc one of my friends slipped up and called him JGY once and I saw it before they edited the message, and that's only a spoiler in CQL (though tbh I prefer the pacing of how CQL introduces you to JGY, hot take; it's probably in solid part because I was show-first and am just biased toward the thing I knew first, but also the thing is . It was SO fun to meet and get attached to Meng Yao and then see him do more and more fucked up things and go UM . WHAT THE FUCK. literally Lan Xichen simulator)

I fully bought the core misdirection, in part because I was kind of confused as to what was going on the whole time

When we started I was like "this is fun and charming! I like these characters and such I'm interested in seeing where this goes, though this isn't Seizing me like a new Thing or like Hannibal did it's not lifechanging" And then we got to Lotus Pier arc, and for like three days of episodes in a row (we would watch 2 eps a day) I cried every single time,and then I was like HEY GUYS... I THINK THIS IS LIFE CHANGING NOW

When we finally got out of the time skip I did some speculation as to who died and in fact called that it was Nie Mingjue because in terms of status quo changes "NHS is sect leader now" would function and give NHS something to do that he didn't have otherwise and NMJ was the most narratively killable

After WWX got stabbed at Carp Tower I was genuinely very afraid for a second that she was going to actually die for real, and my friends were like THIS IS A ROMANCE THEY HAVEN'T EVEN CONFESSED?? and I was like YEAH BUT WHAT IF THEY FINALLY CONFESS AND SHE SUCCUMBS TO HER INJURIES IN LWJ'S ARMS OR SOMETHING!!! IT'S SAD AND I'M SCARED??? and had to be assured that it's in fact not the kind of romance where Anyone Can Die™ and happy ending for the main couple is genre guaranteed. But there's a canon divergence idea for you

semantic error made me unlock hitherto undreamt of levels of fun that can best be compared to the profound enjoyment a hetero woman experiences when watching a really good self-indulgent romcom. i previously thought i'm only into exceptionally fucked up bl but this manhwa taught me i'm not above very basic romance if it's well-written, hilarious and sexy and frames weirdness as something that can be appealing and awaken desires

killing stalking was the first bl manhwa i ever read and what an introduction to the genre it was! it's very good but very dead dove do not it so i wouldn't rec it to just anyone. for me, it was very fun binging the whole thing overnight bc why sleep when you can instead plunge deep into the darkest corners of human psyche while scrolling cartoons

twittering birds never fly has the audacity to maintain that slowburn since *checks wikipedia* 2011?? what the fuck?! if semantic error is a romcom twittering birds is a soap opera with no end in sight - and it has me in a chokehold. yashiro is one of the most characters of all time, i hope he admits his feelings for doumeki sometime before i turn 50 but it's still fun to watch him get into increasingly dramatic situations in order to avoid doing just that lol

painter of the night is just self-indulgent. i don't think the plot is any good at all and i don't particularly like the main character but i'm sufficiently compensated for these flaws by the historical setting and yoon seungho. the joseon period costumes are just so fun to look at - at one point i went down a rabbit hole researching those fascinating gat hats. more bl should be set in the past tbh but it probably takes more time and research for the creators. and yoon seungho is just your classic bad boy you want to fix and do in fact fix. the drrrrama of it tho!

the cornered mouse dreams of cheese / the carp on the chopping block jumps twice is probably the least well-known on this list? this short two volume manga was recced to me by a friend and i really liked it bc it features a protag struggling with his sexuality in a way that to me read very aro. it's also about the quarter-life crisis so. all the themes very near and dear to my heart lol

That's actually a great question as I've been thinking about this exactly!!

At the moment, every cat you've seen up to this point have a randomly generated name (Including Rufus). I didn't really know what I was doing when I first started the blog so I was trying to remain faithful to just using what was given to me, but as I've been fleshing out the story and lore, I've decided to deviate from the names I'm given!

There will still be cats with random names, but there are a few that I've changed for the next moons as I want to use a more hands-on naming system lmao
