deleted that ask from main bc it has been bothering me literally all day but then i realized i dont actually care that much. nobody off of the internet cares or thinks about this in the specifically deranged way social media makes it appear they do. which loops back around to my actual problem with a lot of contemporary converts, which is that many of them do not interact with their faith communities in any coherent, tangible, offline way, but create extremely dysfunctional microcommunities on the internet that do not reflect the values or behaviours of the group they claim to be a part of. (and tbh in general the disconnect between what is said online and what is acted out in real life is a problem in more than just religious circles, OBVIOUSLY, and as such im as fully guilty of this as anyone.) this is not just a jewish problem because i see it happening in trad christian spaces a ton. i see it in my church. i see it in my classes. in very tertiary ways i also see it beginning to happen in muslim spaces, but obviously that is nothing i can comment on as i have no connection to that community. but this behaviour becomes more damaging in judaism because i will tell you right now, a convert does not have more right to my dead family than i do. and nobody, regardless of the time they have spent in a practice or the connection they feel they have to it, has more or less of a claim to that practice. everyone is so desperate to be validated so they can accrue some modicum of power to feel stable in who they are and it makes me sad. this world is breaking people into pieces.
