Irish anon here (so afraid of getting off anon tbh...). A lot of Greek retellings I've read seem to show a lot of disrespect to the original source even though that's where it came from. Like... People then were such complicated types and both men and women could be wicked and good as well. They're more gray. So to see it disrespected like that is angering. I stopped reading them with that knowledge, even though, admittedly, I used to read them. Don't even get me started on Lore Olympus (I've seen you talk plenty of that). Ik I bring this up as well, but to add to that, when I see anglo saxons Americans and others try to romanticize the concept of changelings, that ALSO makes me angry because no, people were tortured for being accused of that. I just want to write something based on my culture out of spite against people who misuse it. In fact, any time I see any culture these days disrespected, I get mad. No, this is not me being mean to anyone who take interest in this stuff. I'm not saying they can't. It's good to learn of our culture! But please, to them, they need to at least show respect. Sorry if it sounds like I'm overreacting ^^; I guess it's just nice to meet another who has the same problem and gets it.

Shamus is... oh my god. Okay first of all, i should preface that I've always loved 'bad' characters. My other #1 blorbo is Arlo from pkmnGO, if that tells you anything. I like Chloe MLB, I like Sharpay Evans, I like Brooke lps popular. Idk what it does to my brain psychologically I just think theyre oh so neat.

With Shamus (ik its a typo but i Love 'shams' btwz stealing that!) at first it was largely his design. I mean look at him! His eyes are so unique, the small irises, the white pupils, even the overall shape of them is one not really seen anywhere else? Not many other pokeani characters look like him. It's something I like about best wishes in general, I think I like Cilan for the same reason.

Another point to my initial love for him is the fact that he isn't even on the COTD list on bulbapedia. Because he technically does show up earlier, in one of tepig's flashbacks. As someone that ALSO loves pokemon COTDs and characters no one else remembers (another one of my favorite characters is EDMUND. the guy that showed up for two seconds and wasnt even on the end card?! YEAH.), you can imagine my surprise when he showed up out of left field!! Like okay weirdo where have you been hiding!

I also love tepig in general, its probably my favorite starter overall (not counting piplup. my love for piplup surpasses 'favorite' status) - I know it seems counterintuitive to love tepig and then also become obsessed with Shamus, but... Idk! Watching Shamus' episode means I get to see more tepig!

But honestly the majority of the reason he's attached to my brain like a parasite is my own personal headcanons. In the same way people headcanon Reggie and Paul to be Brandon's sons... I also hc Shamus to be! In EvJ specifically, hes Reggie and Paul's half brother from Brandon's "i miss my wife i need to have relations with a woman that looks vaguely like her" infidelity episode. I think Brandon was only with Saoirse (the oc we nade up to be Shamus' mom. the autism runs deep.) a couple times, buuut it was enough to make Shamus!

Shamus is Brandon's bastard kid that he doesn't talk to that much and when he does it's because Shamus is in trouble for something. He didn't get to bond with Brandon much at all and as he grows up a lot of his "I need the best pokemon ever, i cant have failures" comes from the exact same place that it does for Paul - Trying to prove themselves to Brandon. The main difference between them is that Shamus is also... Highly manipulative. Love him for it! He developed it pretty early on when trying to get out of trouble, turning on the waterworks so his mom wouldn't call his dad on him.

Listen, in my hc hes only 12 at the time we see him in Best Wishes(and Ash is 15). I dont believe hes ever going to get a grand redemption arc, but I do think he'll grow up to be just Some Guy that his dad can't bring himself to be proud of. I just can't realistically see him becoming that ultimate 'good person' archetype like Ash, or even having a turnaround the same way Paul does. He's just some guy.

Oh also he's gay. Obviously. And Obviously he has issues relating to the fact that hes gay. Also his wholeass soulmate is Sawyer xy but he never even meets him so it doesnt matter.

Since you mentioned it, I think that Irish folk tale actually concerns a vanishing Island? Not quite the same as a vanishing town or village ik.

While I do live in Ireland (the north still counts, partitionists can shut up and die) I don’t know much about Irish Celtic folklore or mythology.

But I do know about stories of an island called Hy-Brasil. Not quite the same but it’s the closest thing I could think of to what you suggested.

Also I swear Wikipedia mentioned that it was brought up in an episode of Fringe. But I watched the entire series (John Noble was INCREDIBLE in it. He’d be a wonderful Doctor) and it wasn’t even mentioned there once.

unfortunately you can’t just dismiss the entirety of irish alcohol problems as a ‘stereotype from the english’. Ireland literally has the second highest rate of binge drinking in the World (according to a WHO study) and from a personal standpoint so many of my friends there described experiences with their parents that were Concerning regarding their parents getting piss drunk when kids were in the house etc, stuff that I never heard from american friends, and I don’t think I met a single person who hadnt started drinking before 13 or so. and ik it was college but a lot of people I knew were getting drunk to the point of blacking out or throwing up multiple times per week.

like are the alcohol problems Caused by the mistreatment from the english? it’s almost certainly a factor for sure, and I’m sure there are studies or articles about it. and the ‘irish are alcoholics’ is def used in a patronizing and harmful way, but alcoholism is a real problem in ireland and dismissing it as a bullshit stereotype isn’t going to help anyone really

YEAH mythology obsession started with percy jackson i'm ngl, then i started reading everything i could about greek myths and eventually roman and nordic ones (oh my god nordic mythology tbh may be my favorite) i've been meaning to get into egyptian and other african mythologies but i've never considered irish mythology and i may need to start looking into that. AND YES i've thought about that specifically so many times, how there are so many parallels between mythologies and stories told globally, no matter how isolated they are from each other. it really indicates human tendency to explain morality, nature, ethics, etc. through metaphor and the instincts that are still ingrained in us.

being completely honest i think the biggest issue/detriment to my confidence, mental state, stability, happiness, loneliness is just that the queer community/support group i used to attend variations of 3 times a week reclassified outside of the mental health space and thus unceremoniously defunded and shut down. for some months after i was involved in a friend's-of lobbying and advocacy group to try and find a new department to fund us, but in the end it all failed. we had some promising stuff federally but there was a state election and nobody wanted to touch us with a ten foot pole and since then silence.

i really genuinely was becoming the happiest version of myself. i miss the workers sm. i miss the associated programs for one on one support, i miss being a loved seen and trusted part of a buzzing humming little queer community.

n ik was a privilege that many of us do not and will not get, n ik i should be able to build up my own happiness like everyone else has to. i will. it's just that Violets was saving my motherfucking life and not only do i want it back but everyone should have a version of it.

it's like id only just started to really deeply learn how to maintain communities, like fr the workers would do lesson nights and teach us how to emergency plan collectively or how to mediate as adults or how to access programs for food and therapy and how to all exist together. i am passionate about community and i was spending my days connecting people to each other and maintaining those connections and my elders in the space valued my work and the kids in their spaces valued my advice and my presence as an older trans woman.

this program is where i met the trans and queer muslims who helped guide me to Allah after leaving catholicism. one of the workers (an atheist) grew up with the exact same brand of northern Irish catholicism I did and for the first time in my life I healed enough thru being seen and understood to be a spiritual person again.

and finally if ur not a trans woman idk if you'll understand this feeling but in that space a generic view of me was 'pretty girl, beautiful girl, attractive girl'. like without objectification, without making that all of me. i was just another pretty girl in a world of pretty girls. i stg i had forgotten my deadname.

this one wasn't my fav but i really enjoyed that janeway was essentially at odds with her own ship. it's really similar to the tas where the ship kept like pranking them except it's serious? it was a fun concept

and likle i do love seeing her having fucking HAD IT you know and then being really angry and badass. it's hot.

i also like that it's a classic trek blunder - they fucked with something alive but it was so alien to them they didn't realize it was alive and they had to grit their teeth and solve it diplomatically even when that was annoying. very tos of them

to be completely honest the ending of this one annoyed me a little bit like...obviously it is bad to hunt holograms for sport when holograms are alive, just like it's bad to make sex dolls out of them. but when you go "oh but they want to KILL ALL ORGANICS" you simplify the issue. it doesn't matter what they're doing or why anymore, because they're trying to commit genocide, so they have to be stopped. easy.

like, you undermine the difficulty of pacifism, one of trek's ideals, when you make pacifism the only option for survival because otherwise voyager will shoot you or whatever

it's also another case of it being perfectly reasonable for hologgrams to be unhappy with their lot in life but since theyre acting unreasonably that makes it ok to maintain the status quo! and they wasted a two-parter on this?? jesus.

tuvok my bestie...it was so hard to see him so sick like OBVIOUSLY janeway is gonna go back in time to fix him. i genuinely love their relationship so muchit is so special to me

janeway on janeway action was great. their conversations with and understanding of one another. mwah

however i didn't reallly...understand? how they got home? like i thought they said the nearest exit leads back to the deltra quadrant and suddenly theyre popping out at home? like it doesn't really matter because they were jsut like LOL OK BYE but what the fuck??

it was a fun episode, but it felt more like a season finale than a series finale. we didn't have any goodbyes the way we did in ds9 or even tng. not goodbyes between characters, but between the audience and the characters. memorable final scenes, if that makes any sense - hints about the future, which is insane considering it's a time travel episode. idk. it was just so weird

- yup yup! fav thing in the world to regress around someone who won't be weirded out by it too

- Around others at home? not much, but when im by myself, very very often, it's why when i plan on being home alone i hide things before everyone leaves, enrichment for the silly dog brain

Okay so William the conqueror got the throne in the battle of Hastings which actually happened in Battle so Battle of Battle tho it’s called Battle because of the battle but anyway he became king and when he died, his oldest son, Robert, didn’t become king of England he became Duke of Normandy and the second son, William I, became king of England. When William died Robert was supposed to become king but the third son, Henry, made some bogus claim about how he was born while their father was king of England, so he was more royal than them. Anyway Henry I’s only legitimate children were a son, William Adelin, and a daughter, Empress Matilda. William died in a shipwreck and Henry decided to be radical and make his daughter his heir. That didn’t go too well, a nephew, Stephen of Blois, claimed the throne while Matilda wasn’t there. This led to the Anarchy which ended with Stephen being king but Matilda’s son, another Henry, being the heir. And then I think it was Henry’s son next (I don’t really remember and this is just what I remember) but whoever he was his name was Richard and he spent like none of his time as king in England. He was Crusading for most of this. Anyway Richard was followed by his brother John, of Robin Hood fame, who lost all the Crown Jewels and was almost replaced by a French prince who the barons (?) summoned to replace him. That didn’t really work out. Then John’s son Henry who I literally don’t know anything about but anyway. His son was named after the king way back before William the Conqueror—Edward. Edward I was known as the Hammer of the Scots bc England and Scotland were at war I think? Idk. I think it was Edward who took Wales bc his son was born in Caernarfon or however you spell it. Edward II was supposed to marry Margaret, maid of Norway, but she died before becoming queen of Scotland, so you know. I lose track of what happens after that.
