I refuse to engage with fan content of fiction I enjoy because far too often will it completely miss the point that the original media was trying to make. I understand why people love fanfic, and I think it can be a great medium, but personally, I have yet to find a single piece of fanfic that I enjoy. My friends send me pieces of fanart and stuff that they think I'll like, and I'm really grateful for that! That said, I will never look for it myself because way too often is fanon a reductive medium rather than a constructive one. Nowhere is this worse than horror. Mouthwashing, a game about the very real horror that humans can inflict on each other, that tackles really sensitive topics in a mature, respectful way, is being reduced to "doomed yaoi" by the fans who don't understand why the game is good in the first place. Analogue horror as a genre has been warped and dumbed down almost beyond recognition, so that the series that were actually good are being overshadowed by terrible copycats to the point that people forget the originals were ever good in the first place. I watched this happen to so many fanbases over the years, and I'm just so tired of it.

i think it’s really amazing how total strangers who have nothing in common but their shared love of a work of fiction will come together across distances and dedicate their time and energy working collaboratively to build an extensive, richly detailed fanon that completely fucking sucks
