Space Resources

I was going through some very old emails from the days of SEDS India and Moon Society, India. This is around 2010. There was a student at the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad (with the email id - martdeep@ismu.ac.in that keeps bouncing then and now) who wanted to become a member. We wanted to take his help to understand the data from Chandrayaan-I’s Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3). There is not much of an email trail but there is a mobile number.

ISM, Dhanbad

This reminded me of ISM itself. The Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad is an interesting place which could be the center of focus soon. ISM Dhanbad has been converted into an IIT, but I hope it maintains some of its character as a mine school. This school will very soon be a very important school for space companies and India’s space programme.

The principles of extraction may or may not differ much from Earth to other celestial bodies. So far we have only picked up rocks that were already on the surface of a celestial body. We have dug some holes on some celestial objects as well, but that was mostly to collect samples.

I asked on Twitter/X if anyone at ISM, Dhanbad is working on extracting resources from celestial objects. I have not received a reply.

India Today had reported in 2021 that they had plans to start courses on asteroid mining. There is no update about the same. They do now have a center for seabed mining but no center for asteroid mining.

In a recent episode of SparX podcast by Mukesh Bansal, Pixxel’s Awais Ahmed speaks about how we will begin by extracting water, before moving on to other things.

Why will this be important?

The consensus emerging between US and China shows how important extraction of space resources is going to be. India is one of the few countries that now has the capability to land on the Moon. But, we also need to build the capability for extracting resources, studying mineral resources, and using those resources on the Moon and back on Earth. ISM, Dhanbad could be the place where we start to learn how to do this and build companies which do this.

Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main is one of the India’s most sought after examinations, conducted by the CBSE Board of India. The JEE Main was formerly known as the AIEEE or the All India Engineering Entrance Exam conducted for admissions into various IIT, IIIT, NIT and other centrally funded institutions. HP Scholarship 2022-23: Application Form, Eligibility, Last Date

The goal of the HP Scholarship 2022 is to provide students with financial aid for their graduate education. Students from low-income backgrounds who are Himachal Pradesh domicile holders are eligible for the scholarships. You can select a program based on your inclusion criteria.

·       Dr. Ambedkar Post-Matric Scholarship

The Dr. Ambedkar Post-Matric Scholarship is for students from economically disadvantaged classes. This program is intended for students in grades 11 through doctoral study who come from a financially challenged background. Students who fall under the general category and whose household income is less than one lakh P/A are eligible for this program. Candidates that are chosen receive advantages such as a maintenance allowance. The application date is December 31, 2022.

·       Pre-Matric Scholarship Program for ST (Scheduled Tribes) Students, Centrally Sponsored

The Himachal Pradesh state government is providing this scholarship. Students in classes 9 and 10 who fall under the ST group are eligible for this scholarship. The program is available to residents of Himachal Pradesh who earn at least INR 2,50,000 per year in their annual income. The deadline to apply is December 31, 2022.

·       Kalpana Chawla Conversational Yojana

This program encourages applications from all female students. Any female student who recently completed their 12th grade in the Andy stream may apply. The award seeks to provide deserving female candidates with financial aid for their post-secondary studies. The chosen females are entitled to receive INR 15,000 per annum.

·       Himachal Pradesh's Integrated Rural Development Program (IRDP)

For students from BPL families, the government of Himachal Pradesh facilitates the application process. This curriculum is for students enrolled in an integrated rural development program from the ninth grade through the graduate level. Up to INR 2400, P/A in awards will be given to the students.

·       Himachal Pradesh's Mukhya Mantri Protsahan Yojana

Candidates are eligible for the scholarship if they have applied for admission to a degree program at IITs, AIIMS, ISM, Dhanbad, or IISC Bangalore, or if they have applied for access to IIMS' PG diploma program. Only students with residence in Himachal Pradesh are eligible to apply for this program. A one-time incentive of INR 75,000 is offered to students.

·       Pre-Matric Scholarship Program for Students from Other Backward Classes, Centrally Sponsored

The Himachal Pradesh state government provides this scholarship to students who are in classes 9 and 10 and are members of the OBC. The program is available to residents of HP who earn at least INR 2.5 Lacs per annum.

·       OBC (Other Backward Class) Post-Matric Scholarship Program, Centrally Sponsored

This program is for OBC students who want to continue their education beyond matriculation and in post-secondary institutions. Apply before December 31, 2022, to be chosen and receive benefits.

·       OBC Students' Swami Vivekanand Utkrisht Chatravriti Yojana

The program is being made available to deserving students in classes 10 and 11 by the Himachal Pradesh government. Candidates who are chosen will earn INR 10,000 per year.
