Eight days till Rufus turns 16. Rufus and I have been very public about writing his final chapter, and I’m happy to share our experience with our dachshund community. More importantly during these challenging times, we’re grateful to have the emotional support of our friends (in real life and virtually via social media). Today I got a call from a friend whose dachshund is near 19 years old, and she’s struggling with “knowing when it’s appropriate to let her boy go.” Wow. That’s such a tough, heart-breaking question, and I don’t believe there is one blanket answer that applies to all, but more of a case by case evaluation. Each dog and pack is different and unique, and I believe each should be treated as such. I imparted my opinion and experience, and thankfully we’re not alone. The dachshund community is an amazing source of help, and I’d like to ask you, what are your thoughts?! I know it’s not a subject matter many of us enjoying discussing, but it is part of loving a dog. What are the metrics you consider? What informs you when it’s time to say that hard goodbye? There are no wrong or right answers, simply your opinion and experience, but I’d love to hear from you. So sound off below in the comments.
