An Ancestor of Mine . . . (formerly SpockLock)
Can Professor Moriarty blackmail Sherlock Holmes? He has evidence that the examination of a cosmic string by StarTrek’s Mr. Spock went horribly awry, and stranded him in Victorian England. In his new home, a surprise onset of Pon Farr leads to an encounter with a Wold Newton descendant - Violet Rutherford, a progressive English adventuress with eclectic interests and friends. Their relationship stretches the Prime Directive to the breaking point and leads to the birth of both Mycroft and Sherlock Holmes.  It could explain so much!

Moriarty may make a small flashback appearance here, in a very well placed scene to make us deliberately think he has returned, but this is a much more personal story. His supposed return had been alluded to all series, with that lingering doubt that he really did survive shooting himself in the head back in 2012, and both writers are very good at making you believe he is about to make a triumphant entrance all the way through. Straight away, they throw us a curve ball with the scared little girl on a doomed train, answering a call from the long presumed dead Jim Moriarty ( Andrew Scott).
#Review sherlock the final problem nytimes series
Penned by both series creators, Gatiss and Steven Moffat, this is the story that they have been building up to for some time. Forced to play her sadistic games, Sherlock must uncover a terrible truth from his childhood. Whilst Mycroft and Sherlock are especially clever, Euros is apparently on another level altogether – so much so that even talking to her puts a person under her control. Mycroft is convinced that their sister Euros ( Sian Brooke) has been incarcerated in a top secret prison for the past twenty odd years, but it will soon turn out this isn’t necessarily true. An exhilarating, solidly entertaining hour and a half that once again shakes the show to its core, whilst also leaving us wanting more.įollowing the revelation last week that Sherlock ( Benedict Cumberbatch) and Mycroft ( Mark Gatiss) have a secret sister, something that had been hinted at for a while before, brothers Holmes and Watson ( Martin Freeman) go on a mission to track her down. As it now disappears off our screens for an indiscernible amount of time, it delivers one last treat for its fans. Sherlock series 4 may not have been the strongest year of the show, a title that can arguably go to its first two outings depending on what mood I’m in, but it has still showcased everything there is to love about it and more. Over the years, there have been minor quibbles, but one story has remained at the top of the list. It was a tradition started by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the Strand Magazine, no less. “the finest assorted collection” For nearly a century, there has been a general concordance on which Sherlock Holmes stories are best.

As part of my New Year’s resolutions for reading, I will try to read at least one short story every day. Yesterday I read Agatha Christie’s “The Cornish Mystery” featuring Hercule Poirot and his colleague Captain Hastings. Today it’s “Mrs. Hudson’s Case” by Laurie R. King featuring Sherlock Holmes’s long-suffering landlady of Baker Street in London, now the housekeeper for the great detective after his retirement to Sussex during World War I, who stumbles upon a case of her own for which she is aptly suited to handle, with some assistance from Holmes’s young associate Mary Russell, an able sleuth in her own right. A fun quick read, revisiting with Russell outside of her adventures beginning with King’s novel “The Beekeeper’s Apprentice.” Four stars.

An Ancestor of Mine . . .
Holmes is being blackmailed by Moriarty. Following an accidental time-travel stranding in Victorian England, StarTrek’s Mr. Spock meets his match in the form of Violet Rutherford, a British adventuress. Does an unavoidable Pon Farr lead to the birth of the world's first consulting detective?  It could explain so much!

“Tenafly” was a TV crime-drama series that starred James McEachin and was part of “The NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie” wheel for the 1973-74 season. Created by Richard Levinson and William Link, the mystery masterminds behind popular shows like “Columbo” and “Murder, She Wrote,” it was the one of the first TV drama series to star an African-American character as the main protagonist.
Private eye Harry Tenafly was a happily married, middle-class family man who had given up being a cop to work for a better paying position at a big L.A. detective agency. One of the few TV detectives who relied more on brains and solid legwork, Tenafly had no interest in gunfights, fisticuffs, or chasing beautiful women. Nevertheless, trouble seemed to find him anyway.

I wanted to revise the internet meme I created about the world's greatest detectives so it would fit as a wallpaper on my iPhone. In the process, I had a little extra room so I figured why not squeeze in a few more sleuths in the process. One thing the new row of detectives have in common: the characters were either created or adapted by Richard Levinson and William Link. @ihearofsherlock @agathachristie #theworldsgreatestdetective #herculepoirot #nerowolfe #elleryqueen #murdershewrote #jessicafletcher #columbo #sherlock #sherlockholmes #missmarple #mystery #detective #richardlevinson #williamlink

Just finished “The Adventure of the Stockbroker’s Clerk” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle from “The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes” with illustrations by Sidney Paget, in which a clerk comes to Holmes and Watson with suspicions about a company that has offered him a seemingly lucrative position.
There are elements evocative of “The Red-Headed League” and “The Norwood Builder.” Given Watson’s previous experience in the former story, you would think he would have been quicker to figure out certain elements of the case, but there were still unexpected twists and turns. All in all, an enjoyable tale. Three out of five stars.
