October through the end of the year is always terrible busy for me but chapter 4 is in the works. Here's a little excerpt from Gale still in the Legate's tent:

Maedhros & Rog board for @outofangband! Happy Birthday!!

this board was a fun thing to work on, especially because i didn't think of this dynamic a lot

"Igni ferroque" is a Latin phrase meaning "with fire and iron", and I find it extremely fitting for them. Maedhros is often associated with fire and Rog is a skilled smith; but "fire and iron" also means a warfare technique called "burned ground", which fits them since they are both fierce warriors.

(I don't know how they met and how they grew close, but I think it's a relationship both of them find comfort in. They go for horse rides and hunt. Maedhros reads while Rog makes his hair into braids, weaving beads in them. Maybe they spend long sessions over chess, simply enjoying the company - they don't need a lot of words to understand each other.)

Hardships of a Harried Housekeep (M rated)

Summary:  Alfred thought this was going to be a routine mission, like the ones he normally pulled off for his intelligence agencies when they couldn’t risk anyone else. He was going to go in, integrate himself with the target’s staff, get the information, and leave. It was an absolutely normal job. Except, of course, for the dress he was going to be wearing the entire time. But that was ok, that was perfectly fine - it wasn’t like anyone was going to know he was a guy, and hey, no one he knew was ever going to see him in a maid’s outfit, so yeah, he was totally fine with this. Enter a bored Ivan on a mission, a perverted, grab-happy target, a sympathetic staff, and it’s far from the month that Alfred was expecting. What did he do to deserve this?

Summary:  Space was never meant to be an easy task- Ivan knew it would be a one-trip mission. He was supposed to land on Galaxy 618KZL and complete his mission. If lucky, he would live his final days in blissful solitude. Instead, his ship crashes on a planet and he is befriended by Alfred, one of the locals. Alfred helps hide Ivan from the rest of the population, and maybe they fall a little in love.

Dancing in the Dark

Summary:  Alfred liked his job. Really, he did. He had been working for the Edelstein’s since he was in high school. Even now that he had a ‘real job’ he would still work at the couple’s small business. It was fairly easy, Tuesday through Saturday night, three weeks at a time. And all he had to do was help correct couple’s postures so Roderich and Elizaveta could demonstrate the dance. Easy peasy. Until now. He didn’t believe it was truly impossible for someone to learn ballroom dancing until he met Ivan.

The woman he was addressing was a captain, mounted upon a horse that was just as angry and faceless as she was. None of her men and women seemed to care that Mahoney was there, moving around him like water diverting from a stone in the river.

Rain continued to pelt them in sheets. The damned sky hadn’t cleared since three days ago and the ground had become too soft for the tanks. Hooves and foot borne armor had far better luck. Behind them, the trenches the Korpsman had been trying to construct started to slough inward again. Annoyed, many had simply abandon the project and moved on to better ground.

The only comfort was the distant boom of earth shaker canons. The glorious roar of the artillery was a balm to any Krieger, to the point where 24 grunted in pleasure when she noticed a round had scored a direct hit on the alien fortress still miles ahead of them.

Finally, she stilled her agitated horse and addressed the man directly. “Hmph, I wasn’t aware we could be classified as Nightlord excrement.” The retorting joke was caustic, but uttered with a rough little giggle of her own. “But my thanks. Now if only that fortress could be cracked open with such a hammer. But where’s the fun in that? Long ass wars are our specialty, my lord.”

"Long?” He drummed his fingers again, mouthing numbers as his focus drifted into empty space.  He watched the scenario play out in mathematics, ending only when one side had reached the finality of zero. “Not by the Legion’s standard.” He grunted, jutting his jaw at the fortress. “A year and a half, at most.”

The servos of his armor growled as he turned and a flat toothed grin spread across his face. “I would inspect your men’s work, Captain. Walk with me.” He insisted, his wide feet sinking inches into the muck as the Warsmith turned his attention to the tunnels and trenches.

She cannot remember what she left, only the smell of saltwater breeze and a vivid orange sunset.

It was a Tuesday, she thinks, because it’s always on a Tuesday, but doesn’t to delve into the memory any further.

Her soul… has long past. She remembers, very faintly, the rub of coarse sand at the heels of her feet, and maybe the squawk of seagulls, and the idea brings a smile to her face, even if she cannot remember why.

It’s hard, some days, to think back, and listen and feel and remember as she once did, but she also gets the vague feeling of somber acceptance, and lets it fade.

Fade, as everything will.

Memories are tricky.

They can be fooled- so tangled and knotted and hidden away in the depths of a mind for so long they come out mangled and broken and changed.

She knows this, expects this, and when it happens, she isn’t surprised.

What’s odd, instead, is the still-lingering sense of dissatisfaction, prickling at her arms, her spine, her mind.

Something is missing. Something important. Something she shouldn’t have risked forgetting.

Even now.

Even… after.

She looks into dark eyes and waits for a flash of…..  that never comes.

There’s a sound missing, an absent vibration in her eardrums that just… doesn’t line up with the memories slowly eroded, rubbed out of existence.

Like a puzzle two missing pieces.

It’s okay, she tells herself. It’s okay to forget. This is what you wanted, wasn’t it?

It was…

She wanted it, remember?

No, she says sarcastically. I don’t, but I’ll trust. Enough.

She waits and waits and waits as days pass, but……

It never comes.

She keeps waiting.

She can’t remember is she was supposed to be sitting or not.

…

The thing is, as much as she accepts Forgetting and her lost memories, there’s still something else that bothers her, digging under her skin.

Almost as much as the sound and the images that still flit by from time to time when her mind is so tired…

There’s still something else.

Three things, she whispers to herself. Three things. Igni ferroque.

The phrase is familiar. The words are not.
