Not the original asker, but how would you make NPC equivalents of PC mechs? Some stuff feels fairly intuitive, but there are some others that I'm less sure of/not sure how to do.

IPS-N

IPS-N mechs are probably the easiest, since there are many mechs that are close to being 1-to-1 NPC approximations of IPS-N mechs.

Blackbeard - One of the easiest, since the Berserker NPC is basically just a Blackbeard. It has the Chain Axe, it has the reckless speed and it has the inability to properly determine between friend and foe. It doesn't have the Blackbeard's enhanced Grapple shenanigans but those aren't really appropriate on an NPC mech anyway.

Caliban - Give an Assassin the Devil's Cough Shotgun and Explosive Knives.

Drake - Take the Bastion, increase its HP just a little, remove the Rotary Grenade Launcher and give it the Scourer's Thermal Lance, except make the Thermal Lance do Kinetic damage instead of Energy.

Lancaster - Another easy one. The Support NPC is just a slightly slower Lancaster. It has a Latch Drone, it has Restock Drones, it has Whitewash, it's got all the fun stuff.

Nelson - Yet another easy one. The Cataphract does pretty much exactly what the Nelson does, just with added trample.

Raleigh - This is much more difficult - so much so that for In Golden Flame, I created an entirely new NPC class, the Slinger, just to simulate it. If you don't have IGF, start with an Assault. Remove the Assault Rifle, Combat Knife and Hunker Down. Take the Drum Shotgun from the Goliath and call it a Hand Cannon. Give it the Archer's Impending Threat optional.

Tortuga - This one's fairly simple. Take a Sentinel, upscale it to Size 2, give it Punisher Ammunition and the Bombard's Siege Armor.

Vlad - Take a Berserker, give it the Nail Gun optional, and then give it the Bastion's Near-Threat Denial System.

Zheng - Take a Berserker, give it Juggernaut and Retribution, remove Aggression, remove the Chain Axe and replace it with the Demolisher's Demolition Hammer.

SSC

SSC mechs also have a lot of parallels, so it's pretty easy to model them.

Black Witch - Probably the hardest mech to model with existing NPCs. I created another whole new class, the Lodestone, just to simulate these guys.

Death's Head - Take a Sniper, cut the damage on its Anti-Material Rifle to 6/8/10, strip the Loading trait and permanently give it the effect of Deadmetal Rounds (shots become Line 20 instead of Range 25).

Dusk Wing - Literally just a Hornet.

Metalmark - Take an Assault and give it the Operator's Fade Generator.

Monarch - Depending on the exact flavour of Monarch you want, you can do two things. Either take a Rainmaker, scale it up to Size 2 and give it Atlas Missiles the Ace's Missile Swarm, or take an Ace, scale it up to Size 2 and give it Missile Swarm.

Mourning Cloak - Literally just a Specter.

Swallowtail - Literally just a Scout.

HORUS

HORUS mechs are where we need to get a little bit more inventive. This shit ain't natural boys.

Balor - Take a Hive, give it Electro-Nanite Cloud and the Berserker's Harpoon Cannon, then give it the Exotic template and choose Regenerator. Or, if you have No Room For A Wallflower, just use the Lurker NPC.

Goblin - It's a Witch.

Gorgon - Take a Sentinel, scale it up to Size 2 and give it the Archer's Impending Threat and Suppress reactions.

Hydra - There's not really an NPC that simulates a mech deploying 800 drones and honestly that's probably for the best.

Manticore - Give a Berserker the Superhot optional, the Cataphract's Capacitor Discharge, the Sentinel's Combat Shotgun and the Operator's Self-Erasure.

Pegasus - Do not attempt to simulate me, ha ha.

Harrison Armory

Home stretch here.

Barbarossa - Take a Goliath, give it the Ultra's Short-Cycle Lance or the Bombard's Bombard Cannon.

Genghis - Literally just a Pyro.

Iskander - This is just a Seeder.

Napoleon - Why does this mech exist

Saladin - Scale up an Aegis to Size 2.

Sherman - Take a Scourer and give it Emergency Vent.

Tokugawa - Take a Berserker and give it Superhot. Make its Chain Axe do Energy instead of Kinetic, and instead of Shredding on crit, make it do a couple of Burn damage.

Rummitz - Paladin of the Green Lion, She/He

A resourceful tactician of questionable origins. Initially discovered her bond with the Green Lion on the planet Olkarion during a support drop-off by now-retired Paladin Pidge Holt.

Rummitz's connection to the Green Lion sparked a three year long expedition to find and train the next Paladins of Voltron.

Taya - Paladin of the Yellow Lion, He/They

Hailing from the peaceful planet of Puig, Taya is known for their courage and tenacity. His bond with the Yellow Lion was discovered during a short stop at Puig, where the a festival was held in Voltron's honor.

Xyzy - Paladin of the Red Lion, She/They

Calm, calculating but quick to strike, Xyzy was rescued from a Galra prison ship where she was arrested after being found to have given crucial information about one of Emperor Zarkon's experiments to the Blade of Marmora. They were later taken in by the Garrison and made their connection with Keith Kogane, and subsequently the Red Lion.

Aries - Paladin of the Blue Lion, She/Her

Less of a sharp shooter, more of a pound-into-dust sort of gal, but don't take that to mean she's dull - a sharp wit and an even sharper glare might make you want to stay on your toes.

Aries made her connection with the Blue Lion after an accident at the Garrison that injured her right leg. She spent the months healing in the aircraft hangers talking to pilots and dreaming she'd one day get to be one herself.

Yohe - Paladin of the Black Lion, It/They

Unexplained and inexplicable, this eerily quiet bundle of quintessence is certain they're the last of their kind, but it doesn't remember anything before the time it woke up from it's pod that crash landed onto Earth.

It's connection with the Black Lion is fuzzy at best. Something blocks the two from truly connecting, which causes problems for the team when they're in a tight spot and could really use the full power of Voltron.

Voltron - 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

We gave Voltron a 5 out of 10 - one for each lion. It's a novel concept, and it's an iconic design. The blue glows are a nice touch, but overall it's a bit average compared to some other big ships.

Zarkon's Fleet/War Ship - 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

We thought this fleet, specifically the command ship, deserved a 8/10. The purple glow is very Galran and the colors coordinate nicely. It remains sleek while still being a large ship.

MFE Fighter - 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

We gave the MFE fighter ships a 6 out of 10. It's fine. It's a classic, earth-class fighter ship. ..Nothing wrong with it. It's just. ...Just fine. No wow factor. Nothing against it. Just. Fine.

Altean Castle of Lions - 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

The Altean Castleship gets a solid 10/10. It is both a castle, and a ship, and executes both functions on command and with ease, also while being exceptionally old.

Galra Central Command - 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

7/10. Galra Central Command is extremely intimidating and large. Due to its nature as the central hub of activity, it's complex in its functionality.

IGF Atlas - Carrier Form 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

IGF Atlas in its standard flight mode, which we've called 'carrier mode' as opposed to its transformed state, is a pretty robust ship, and comes in with a 8/10. It matches with the MFE color scheme and is clearly delineated as a command ship. It also vaguely mirrors the Galra command ship, but is long instead of wide, allowing for use in Earth atmosphere.

Zaiforge Cannon - 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

8/10 for the brutal Galran assault weapon - and only 'loosely' categorized as a ship. It is a vessel that goes into space and is piloted, so we decided to include it. Extra points for the cannon part.

IGF Atlas - Gundam Fighter Form 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

Atlas in Fighter Form gets a solid 12/10. It lands the throwback to Voltron's form, but brings some extra... curves to the game.

We didn't even count the cheese. Sincline is ❤/10. It's a very organic ship design, which is unusual compared to others. Its movement is graceful and it is both strong and powerful; often ships tend to excel at either armor or weapons; rarely both.

Working as a cargo pilot was not Lance's first choice.

He wanted to be a fighter pilot, really- but his initial scores weren't good enough to get him onto the fighter pilot track when he joined the flight academy. At that point, the only chance he had to get into it was if someone from the fighter pilot track dropped out and he was the one selected to take their place... which is exactly what happened.

Or it would have, if he hadn't choked on the advancement test and blew his chances.

He knows it's unfair to blame the cadet who dropped out- one Keith Kogane, the most promising talent the academy had produced since Takashi fucking Shirogane. He's aware that what got him was ultimately the short notice he was given before the test and his nerves. It's not Keith's fault.

But hey! He gets to work on the IGF-Atlas, one of the premier ships in the Earth fleet. That's something! Takashi Shirogane is his captain! That's also something! Plus, they just agreed to be the escort ship for Yellow Lion's big galactic peace tour, and Lance happens to love Yellow Lion. And now he gets the chance to meet them! And they turn out to be really nice! He thinks he might actually be friends with them now?

Summary: Sendak and his army were defeated, earth was safe. The paladins, Voltron, and IGF-Atlas all took a beating. After going through war it was finally time for rest and recovery. Shiro was busy tailoring his crew and learning the ropes of being a captain. If he wasn’t training he was at a meeting, if it wasn’t a meeting he had paperwork. It made being the head of Voltron seem easy. Keith wasn’t sure what to do with himself. He was supposed to be a leader and he never felt so lost. He found his mom yet there was still a hole in his heart of something missing. His love for Shiro only grew in the passing years. He wasn’t sure how much more he could take. The last time he almost lost Shiro nearly broke him. His world was collapsing around him but he had to keep a brave face. Shiro could never love him back, right?

And I remembered an old s7-AU dream I had where the Galaxy Garrison finds an injured, insane Lotor, and he ends up powering the IGF-Atlas mecha with Shiro against Sendak. So catch me just daydreaming about that scenario as I'm writing for work, lol.

You are understandably cautious because this fandom has a deserved reputation for being one of the worst in recorded history due to its rampant toxicity and K/L shippers, especially, having a penchant for harassing any and everyone with differing opinions.

I am so sorry that this environment has been so hostile toward you. You didn't and still don't deserve that. Fandoms are supposed to be fun, occasionally self-indulgent, places of escapism. Not overwhelm participants with intense anxiety because they're expecting to be attacked for expressing love for a certain character or ship, or even a dissenting opinion.

One of my dearest friends shared a post with me, the other day, that I find very apt for our ongoing predicament as Shiro fans.

"Sometimes you see discourse ™ so mindbogglingly dumb you just have to be like, 'That’s the kids talking. That’s the same as when two toddlers are having an intense conversation and it’s totally detached from reality, but they’re very serious about it. That’s not for me that’s for the kids'."

It can be fun, or sometimes even feel imperative, given how often they rile me up, to challenge these hate-fueled, mindbogglingly dumb, detached from reality takes. But, we don't have to engage with them. We always have the option to remind ourselves, "That's the kids talking. That's not for me, that's for the kids."

You are not "stupid" for taking precautions to protect yourself from vitriolic subsets of this fandom. And, yes, anyone cheerfully looking to spread hatred for Shiro while tacking on, "I still love him/I don't hate him, but", as a preemptive shield from criticism, is provably vitriolic. You have to have nothing worthwhile going on in your life and an unquenchable need to start petty drama in order to sit around and invent reasons to hate a gay, disabled, neurodivergent trauma survivor who epitomizes selfless heroism and who has chosen to remain gentle in spite of everything that he's been through.

What's that? Sorry, child, I can't hear you over Shiro canonically drawing Keith into an embrace in full view of everyone after learning that Keith shares the blood of the species that made Shiro's life a living Hell for a year.

There is a saying, "You don't choose the favorite character. The favorite character chooses you." While I do find it invariably tends to ring true, it is interesting how people with certain personality types gravitate toward specific characters, and then latch onto them with a fierceness that can only come from intense personal projection.

I'm not knocking anyone for this. I project at least a bit onto my favorite characters, as well, as I'm certain most people do. It comes with the "self-indulgent escapism" territory.

It just sucks that L/K-shipping fans of either character have chosen to make their intense projection onto these characters into everyone else's problem. Particularly Shiro and Allura, and I imagine even Pidge (given that I've seen more than a few fics bashing her for supposedly being mean to Lance) fans.

No, making K/L canon would not have "fixed" the inept writing, inherent ableism and ageism, and deplorable treatment of trauma survivors that tacitly endorses them martyring themselves. All that would have accomplished is setting a precedent that targeted harassment and attempted extortion works. The showrunners absolutely did the right thing in not caving to the demands of a horde of entitled brats who actively attacked them for two years, lobbing accusations of pedophilia at a father. Which could have completely ruined his life and resulted in his children being taken from him had anyone taken these preposterous claims over a harmless ship between two legal adults in a cartoon seriously.

I'd like to consider it a form of serendipity that we crossed paths with each other in this cesspit of a fanbase. ❤ As I informed another blogger, a few days ago, finding another Shiro fan who doesn't simply view him as "hot bara Daddy Dom I want to imagine banging my self-insert of choice", will always be a breath of fresh air.

In much the same way Lance and Keith fans simultaneously lionizing and woobifying their favorites at the expense of everyone else has done a great job of putting me off of them.

Keith, Pidge, Lance, and Hunk have their own fathers. Coran is Allura's surrogate father. No one on Team Voltron sees Shiro as their dad.

Headcanons that Shiro and Adam adopted and raised Keith are just that. Headcanons. If you find something enjoyable in them, or want to adopt Shiro as the ideal father to your character of choice, that is perfectly fine, so long as you remember that you're working within an alternate universe that has nothing in the show's canon to support it.

Shiro was always a mentor, leader, and/or older brother to the Paladins. He's twenty-five years-old. Not fifty. And, I guarantee if he had tried to pull rank on any of these kids, they would one-thousand percent have fired back with, "You're not my dad!"

The only character who arguably views Shiro as a father is the Atlas; based on Shiro being the sole person she has a connection with, and her modeling her mecha form after his physique.

By far, my largest gripe in a world post-Voltron Legendary Defender is the fact that there is no model kit for the IGF-Atlas.
