An African bush elephant family earnestly running down to a watering hole in Namibia's Etosha National Park to quench their thirst in the dry season. Loxodonta africana is the largest living terrestrial animal with males standing 3.2–4.0m (10–13ft) tall at the shoulder and weighing 4,700–6,048kg (10,360–13,330lb). The largest recorded individual stood four metres (13.1ft) at the shoulder and weighed 10tonnes. An Acacia Pied Barbet female in flight exploding from the security of her nest within a dead acacia tree stump. Spring and summer marks breading season for most birds in southern Africa, a time of rain, food and plenty for life. For this shot I had to wait ages for the male to return to relief the female of incubation duties and give her a chance to feed and get a drink, a routine they speed up on very hot days.
