Bashy : How Black Men Lose Their Smile

Wow. Stunning, 100% relatable song that everyone should sit down, listen to, then run it back and listen again. Bashy is absolutely flawless here, telling his story while also telling the stories of so many of us Black men who have grown up here. The production by Toddla T just adds to it, with the reggae-influenced beat calling back to the music that has been so prominent in Black British life, and the straight-to-camera video is starkly fitting. "Being Poor Is Expensive" is the title of the new album this track is drawn from, and also a plain statement of fact.

M Slago : Sonic Marvel (Ten City Flip)

"The 80's Beat Tape" coming out of FWMJ's "Producers I Know" collective/project was a ten-track collection of, as you'd expect, producers flipping 80s records into their own compositions. I can't say I remember the original that Nashville's M Slago chopped into this slowed, ominous track, but I do know that many years after the 2015 release of this tape which was recorded at least two years before that, this beat was used for "Finer Things" featuring Kyle Rapps. So nice, we got it twice!

Scarface : No Problem

Scarface's "Deeply Rooted" from 2015 is a quality LP that you should seek out if you can - more than likely, you'll need to fork out to buy a copy since it seems to have long disappeared from Spotify. The Houston icon was on his eleventh solo album here, and his one long verse is an aggressive statement of who he is, what he's about, and what/who he has no respect for, over a dark, grinding beat from Atlanta's KEY! (punctuation is part of the name).

Ghetts ft. Stefflon Don : Slumdog Millionaire

This Bollywood-accented cut from 2017 is such a killer, and an appropriate move coming from the UK where many of us grew up hearing it at least as part of the background growing up - Ghetts himself notes that it was that element that made this Nutty P beat stand out for him. Stefflon Don adds some flavour to the hook, but Ghetts takes centre stage on the mic for two tight verses. If you want more, 2018's "Ghetto Gospel : The New Testament" is the place to go.

GQ : Trap

A track I admit I'd overlooked on the "Rated Oakland" LP despite its position as the closer, this one definitely pulled me in when I went back to it for the first time in a while, ten years after the original release. I've cut it a little short here for the sake of pacing, but you'll get a long spoken word closing from GQ if you go to check the full album! The moody, dark production comes courtesy of Eric G of The Soul Council.

namesbliss : Last Week

I was totally unaware of this highly-skilled MC out of Kilburn, London, until he popped up on my IG feed - who says social media is good for nothing? His rapid-fire, witty, and clean flows are married up with smooth beats (this particular one produced by Scruz) that are miles away from what you generally hear in the grime genre - I've heard this described as "lo-fi grime" and that seems as good a label as any. It reminds of me what KwolleM started a good few years back with his "mellow grime" style, and it's nice to hear an MC like this with room to breathe on the track! This particular cut is a highlight from his latest LP "Lively Experience", which is one of my favourite purchases of the month.

Devin Morrison : The Blisselle

I played a vocal track by Devin Morrison on the podcast back on episode 153, but didn't appreciate until recently how prolific (as well as skilled) a producer he is! In just over two years he has released a twelve volume series of "Dream Lobby" collections, made up of work he didn't think fit a standard album format, and if you like modern, smooth, dreamy, and soulful production then you want to at least dip in if not collect the set. This cut is taken from "Dream Lobby Vol. IX", a seven-track delight from last autumn - so I thought I'd share it as we get ready to enter this one...

Ghostface Killah : The Forest

I had the chance to see The Alchemist live this month, and as he was playing a smoking set of some of his many, many production classics from a long career, he dropped this one - which I totally forgot he did! With all the cartoon characters engaged in legally questionable activities, this track from 2001's "Bulletproof Wallets" is very much like Ghost's take on the two "A Gangsta's Fairytale" tracks Ice Cube did back in the day.

Jeru The Damaja : One Day

Hits differently now, doesn't it? Short, pointed, and naming names, find this DJ Premier-produced dagger on Jeru's second LP, "Wrath Of The Math".

Kuartz & Dubbul O : War Cry

Dubbul O only recently released the "Stay Gold" EP with Cutterz and now he's back with the devastating production of Kuartz on the new "Shigurui" EP, giving us that boom-bap rawness. This is the opening track, with the Manchester duo giving us some Timberland and hoodie music for real. If you miss this style, pick up this LP to hear it being done very well indeed!

Clear Soul Forces : Insane

One of the more light-heartedly amusing moment of this month for the heavily-online Hip-Hop fan was when the great Questlove of The Roots, one of the most knowledgeable music heads in the entire world discovered that Clear Soul Forces existed - it appears he thought they were a new act, but they've been about for almost a decade! We all have things slip under our radars, and there's no shame - if Questlove can miss a talented group like this, then we all can! Anyway, I thought it was fitting to go all the way back to their first album, 2015's "Fab 5ive" for this banger. While most of their catalogue has been produced by Ilajide, who is also an MC, this LP was produced by fellow Michigan native NAMELESS, who has this one smashing while CSF explode lyrically all over the track. As an aside - Quest was of course gracious when everyone leapt in to correct him!

[Kut Masta Kurt] Motion Man : Play Dough (Instrumental)

Early-2000s, independent underground boom-bap business - and while I got this beat from these two Cali natives on the B-side of a 12" single, you can now get the entire set of instrumentals from the "Clearing The Field" LP on Bandcamp!

LL Cool J ft. Busta Rhymes : Huey In The Chair

The buzz around this album since it came out this month has been quite something, with most heads agreeing it's the best thing LL has done in years! "The FORCE" is almost entirely produced by Q-Tip, and the result is a triumph for these two giants from the borough of Queens. This track brings in Busta alongside LL, with both going ultra-Black while referring to the famous image of Huey Newton of the Black Panther Party in the peacock chair that still hits as hard today, over fifty years since it was taken. Definitely check the album if you've not heard it yet.

Slum Village ft. Little Brother : Where Do We Go From Here?

As you likely know, SV have been through many lineup changes over the years and as much as anything the name is a flag to rally under for Detroit's finest - with this track coming from 2010's "Villa Manifesto", an album which thanks to posthumous contributions actually features every member that had been in the group up to that time. The vibe here is kind of retro-futuristic Hip-Hop, with Young RJ on production, Samuel Beubien on string arrangements, and DJ Dez doing a phenomenal job scratching in all the separate lines of lyrics to create a spoken hook. Only two verses, but T3 and then the combination of Phonte and Big Pooh of LB do the business. 

Mr. Voodoo aka AGU : Crhyme Life

Alchemist on the beat again, with a dark, tense piece of production to go along with the killer bars of Mr. Voodoo, one-third of the highly-respected Natural Elements crew.  As far as I can tell, this was only ever released as a 12" single and I can't find it on the streaming services, but it's available used pretty inexpensively if you want to add some quality rhymes and early Alchemist production to your crates!

Dave East and Mike & Keys ft. Stacy Barthe : So Much Changed

You know you're getting on a bit when tunes you clearly remember growing up are being covered, sampled, and tributed! This track from this year's "APT 6E" album from Harlem's Dave East and the production duo Mike & Keys is a clear tribute to the 1994 release "Pain" by 2Pac, from the "Above The Rim" soundtrack. It's not just the sample, but the lyrical themes that hark back to that original song, particularly on the first verse, and it's well done. Multiple Grammy nominee Stacy Barthe blesses the hook with her vocals, which again are reminiscent of "Pain" but with her own flavour.

[Ice Cube, QD III] Yo-Yo : IBWin' With My CREWin' (Instrumental)

After starting the mix with this stripped down to just the drums and bass courtesy of Serato's "stems" feature, I was tempted to leave it like that but ended up bringing back the rest of the elements on this banging 90s beat from Yo-Yo's third album "You Better Ask Somebody". Yo-Yo first came to our attention on Ice Cube's first solo LP, as his foil on "It's A Man's World" before going on a strong four-album run from 1991-1996 - go and have a listen if you're not familiar!

The B Boys ft. Chuck D and Ice-T : Hello

A record I had no idea was coming, this is a true meeting of veterans, OGs of the artform. The B Boys are the original crew of Donald D, an MC you might know from his excellent late 80s-90s work as part of the Rhyme Syndicate, with Brother B and DJ Chuck Chillout completing the trio. Their original run was roughly 1983-1985, then they went separate ways before coming back together for a couple of EPs in 2022 and 2023, and then a full LP "We Get Down" this year, which this track is on! The Donald D-produced instrumental is heavily drum-centred, and in the best way, sounds like something that could have been on Ice-T's first LP, and leaves plenty of space for the vocals to be heard clearly - and the headliners bring along Ice-T and Public Enemy's Chuck D to provide full verses for a track that runs for over five minutes, a relative rarity these days. Abigail Culley's hook rounds it out nicely, and if you're anything like me, will stick in your head!

28 is not a Larry number - a masterpost

Since @theystudyrainbows has decided to put all the Larrie delusions on this number in one handy masterpost, why not debunk it all in one go?

Even the introduction is a mess. The 28 is not “a One Direction fandom mystery” at all. It’s Louis’ jersey number that he was assigned at Doncaster Rovers and that he has since then adopted. But then again, Liam’s kidney and the Belfast canceled concert are not mysteries either

How decent of you to say that some of these are coincidences, considering literally all of the following is bullshit

The fact that “too many people to name” contributed to write this drivel makes my heart ache

Harry has no connection to the number 28 whatsoever

The problem with you attempting numerology is that there are only 9 possible digits (as the addition of two numbers can never be zero). So, you clown yourselves because it leads to this

Eleanor was born on July 16th 1992:

7+1+6+1+9+9+2 = 35

3+5 = 8

Oh no!

But also, Zayn was born on January 13th 1992:

1+1+3+1+9+9+2 = 26

2+6 = 8

(: Ya see how that’s just not good?

Not only that, but also, as I said, Harry has no connection to the number 28, but for shits and giggles

Kendall Jenner was born on November 3rd 1995:

1+1+3+1+9+9+5 = 29

2+9 = 11

You also use this method to count Harry and Louis’ X Factor numbers, but as we’ve established, there are only 9 options, the odds are stacked for this coincidence

How is that 28? That’s 82.. A completely different number. In the UK the date is written day/month/year. So the “same gig” was the 8th day of the 2nd month. 82. It’s very funny that, since you’re Italian and live in the UK (both countries that use the day/month/year system) you’ve written every date so far that way, but now that you want to say this other random date is connected to 28, you switched to month/day/year.

Also, where is the year in this equation? We’ve been using the entire date so far, but now we’re only focusing on the day and month? (and switching order?) That seems very convenient. Almost like, if you try hard enough, any date can add up to 28 in some way?

Soccer players have assigned numbers throughout the season, and the number 28 had been retired from the line up after John Ryan used it in 2003. He decided to bring it back to give it to Louis. And Louis was signed as a soccer player professionally with that number. That’s why it’s important to him, you bag of nonsense. This was his life long dream in the club he loved. He probably spent hours and hours daydreaming about being signed professionally to play soccer and when he finally accomplished that, it was with the number 28, so of course it’s gonna be important to him!

Find ONE INSTANCE of Louis using the number 28 before the summer of 2013. ONE. You won’t! The tattoo came after that, him wearing it on his jerseys came after that. According to Larrie Lore Harry and Louis started dating in 2011 (apparently September 28th 2011, go figure), but for two full years neither of them did anything related to the number 28 whatsoever!

Why didn’t Louis wear the 28 in his first charity match in 2012?

Furthermore, Louis didn’t CHOOSE the 28, it was ASSIGNED to him because it was the symbolic number the chairman had used back in 2003. You repeat tactics again, except it’s the most ridiculous tactic of adding all the numbers in the date except the 2 of the year and it’s for “Harry posted link to Twitter to Sign of the Times music video PREVIEW.” Oh my god

And now you’re counting days between two dates, because that’s not unhinged. I’m guessing you mean the April 14th not 24th, but that also wasn’t the date? It was the 13th? It depends on the time zone you were in?

For someone who, according to you, plans with such precise care to match to 28, he didn’t wait until it would be 28 days for everyone. He stops playing and singing at 2.40. Then speaks until 2.43. Then the “pause” which is just him trying to get the audience to stop screaming until 3.07 when he says (I can’t really make it out) “now you” or something like that. And then he says “for your eyes...” and lets the audience sing at 3.09. Literally none of these timestamps add to 28 and he had no way of counting to 28 since he was silencing people the entire time. And just like when he switched “I have love you since we were 18″ to “I have loved you since I was 16″ hitting his own chest, or when he said he fell in love to What Makes You Beautiful, you missed the entire point of this bit, which is Harry’s LOVE FOR HIS FANS

He has loved us since he was 16, he fell in love to us to What Makes you Beautiful, and he was letting us sing that part of the song every concert. He “paused” to shush the nonsensical screams, then he would give the audience the cue and let them sing. Several times he dedicated the song to specific fans in the audience, people with cancer, little kids, a fan that had neck surgery. By making it about Larry, you stripped it from its actual meaning and Harry’s love for his fans. But you always do shit like that

Regardless, he didn’t pause for 28 seconds. Wrong

You & Me - Part Seventeen

The positive reaction from the fans for the album was beyond your wildest dreams. They had already started to sing along, clearly having been on youtube and seen fans recordings of previous shows. It had been great getting back on the road again, tour bus life was something you had been use to and actually enjoyed. Even the living out of a suitcase and backpack part.

Something you were not enjoying however, was being separated from Callie. Since you'd got together just over two months ago you'd spent some of your nights together and some apart. You obviously preferred to be together, but had been fine for the week when you'd gone to Scotland for the golf event you had attended. However knowing that her being on the other tour bus was the reason you were apart was driving you crazy. Callie had been adamant that she would travel as contracted with the crew. The agreement being that when you were in a city for more than just the show night and not travelling to the next city inbetween, then she would stay with you in your room of the hotel. 

However the last time that had happened was 8 days ago, and you were missing her. 

The crew often headed off before you, as you had interviews and things to do. And when you had been at the venues it had been hectic and you'd had hardly any time alone.

The night of the CMA's was the same. You'd spent time with her and the band when you were rehearsing with Maren Morris. Introducing Callie as your guitar tech and girlfriend to Maren had felt amazing. You felt proud when she spent time chatting with her and her team, getting on well. Which was handy since Maren was due to tour with you next year.

With so many acts appearing at the Country Music Awards, you had a small dressing room and the crew and band had stayed mainly out on the tour buses. You would all be leaving straight after anyway, as you had a show the next night to travel to. 

Tonight was a big night for you, performing with Maren at the awards show was going to be a highlight of your career. Sound check went without a hitch and you then headed off for food and to get changed. Ellie had got you a custom made navy blue tux with some silver floral details on the lapels. Sienree spent some time doing your your hair and face, trying to keep your nerves at bay with some banter.

While she was finishing your hair you opened up your IG and noticed that John had put on a story. It was video of Gerry your drummer, Conor your violinist and Callie, having a laugh backstage. Conor was playing his violin, a familiar Irish folk song and Callie and Gerry were attempted some sort of Irish jig. You laughed at their attempt, both of them looking ridiculous.

It was so stupid to think that you missed her. The lack of quality time alone with her was beginning to take its toll. You only had tonight and two more shows before you could have a couple of days off in Nashville together. There was an amazing guitar store there that you were desperate to show her. Plus you had a couple of nights in a hotel to look forward to. You were not going to lie, the lack of intimacy left you yearning for her. Having to make do with the odd kiss here and there was rubbish. You wanted to cuddle her to sleep, stroke her hair as you lazed about and watched a film.

Just 3 more days.

As you were walking the red carpet that evening you spotted Maren up ahead with her fiance Ryan Hurd. You posed for photos with them and were soon guided towards the reporters. You spent a few minutes with each one, letting Maren take the lead as this was her home ground. Everyone was asking about your performance and tour plans for next year.

One particular reporter, a guy you'd met a couple of times at events asked Maren about her upcoming nuptials. She and Ryan were getting married in a few months and she launched into a chat about you singing as she walked down the aisle. Everyone laughed as you joked about it.

The reporter soon asked if you were single or not and you couldn't help but blush and try and guide the conversation away from discussing Callie. You got the impression that the reporter was just asking the question on everyone's mind, rather than knowing about the pictures floating around on fans social media accounts of you and Callie.

"Oh, look at his face." Maren said as she patted your cheek. "He's blushing!"

"Oohhh have I struck an exclusive?!" The reporter asked smiling.

"Um no, just know that I'm very happy at the moment the way things are." You replied trying to keep your answer as vague as possible. 7 years of media training helps with that.

"Well, good luck and all the best for whatever is happening. And also for your tour that I know you're in the middle of."

You were grateful that the reporter left it there. It was good to remember that not everyone wanted to know about who you were dating. She soon got over the nervousness and would happily assist you with tuning them. Rob told her all about the guitar and some to her like it, this was like heaven for a guitar technician. She began taking photos of a couple of them, to show her Dad she had told you and Rob.

Rob left you to browse for a bit and you met up with the others. Mark had joined you to and offered to take a group photo in front of a display of Gibson vintage guitars. Everyone huddled up together, you in between Gerry and Callie. This would be one to post later and see the reaction of fans.
