Father’s Day Treat of J!ns Philippines
Yesterday, Jins Philippines tagged me on Instagram and sent congratulations for winning their #JinsPerfectPair eyewear. The contest I participated is dedicated to all fathers in celebration of Fathers Day or Chichi no Hi. We are given instruction to proceed to their branch at SM Aura to claim the prize.
Tumblr media
Before anything else, I wanted to share that I’ve learned about Jins thru Sho Sakurai, an Arashian for sure have browsed various ads online of Sho’kun wearing Jins. Just like below.
Tumblr media
When I’ve learned that they put up their flagship here at PH, my inner fangirl got excited because I think my sekai is one step closer to my second country which is Japan (I dunno, but I cant help but get happy whenever I see stuffs related to Japan here at PH, how Japanophile reacts) and of course, I’m hoping they will put Sho-kun’s ads as well on their store so I could stan but I guess ~ that’s impossible.
Back to business, Jins Philippines Instagram account put up a contest last June 11 for the upcoming Fathers Day. They also set the same contest last Mothers Day, too bad its already late when I saw the post. With the Fathers Day giveaway contest, the instructions are just simple, you have to put a picture of you and your special Father, add some captions telling why you wanted to give this person a pair of glasses and tag Jins on your post. I immediately looked for a picture and posted it on my IG. At first, I forgot to tag Jins Philippines on my post, good thing, they sent a comment asking for the tag so they’ll know ~phew! tasukatta.
Tumblr media
We were eating lunch yesterday together with my colleagues when I received a notification via instagram, it says that my post got picked by Jins as one of the lucky winners of #JinsPerfectPair #JinsForMyDad. As stated below, we just have to bring our Dad and proceed to their store at SM Aura between 10am to 3pm for the free eye checkip and faded lenses. Kamisama!!! Arigatoooo
Tumblr media
This afternoon, we ride on a cab from our place heading to SM Aura. Actually, it is my first time at Aura, my family’s comfort zone is always at SM Megamall so we decided to adjust our time just in case we got stuck on the traffic so we have enough time to locate the store.
Tumblr media
(Jitsu wa, Manong Driver is so daldal, he managed to kept us entertained despite the heavy traffic along C5).
The cab dropped us on the side entrance of SM Store. Without a clue how Aura’s store setup was, we tried to locate the exit of SM store heading to the mall’s open lobby. Aura did not give us the pain of locating the store because just few steps from the exit you will see the Jins signage right after  American Eagle Outfitters ~yatta!.
Every sales personnel at the store are very welcoming and friendly. All of them are smiling brightly. We were entertained immediately by the guy, I didn’t get his name, but he sure looks professional. He asked to write my name and other details, he asked as well few questions regarding history of eye checkup done to my father. They allowed Papa to select the style of his frame from several laid on the table, it was also asked on what type of glasses he need, if its just a reading glass or a graded one. Since both my Papa and I are both indecisive on the style of frame, the ‘I dunno his name guy’ helped us by suggesting the best type of frame based on my Papa’s face shape which I highly appreciate because I believe they know it better than us. Papa chose the one suggested and immediately sent to the optometrist room for the eye checkup.
While waiting, I took pictures of the store. The ambiance is very cozy, very minimalist and sophisticated. Unlike other eye-wear stores, Jins first branch interior is made of wood racks. It is very nice to look around the displays because it is very spacious.

After the check-up, the optometrist said that we just have to wait for 30 minutes for the new glasses to be prepared, and then it is ready to wear. We came back to the store at exact time they suggested and VOILAAA!! Papa received his Jins Perfect Pair!!! . It’s super faaaaast!....
After receiving the prize, they asked a picture of us while wearing the glasses. OMG! Jins is sure very generous... hatsukashii yo! they posted our picture as well on their IG Story. They sure know how to make their clients happy, the eyewear fits perfectly to my Pops!...
Tumblr media
The casing is very stylish and expensive looking, Papa chose the gray colored and its pretty cool. I love how the “Designed in Tokyo” printed on the frames, it surely tickles my inner japanese feels.. Papa said that unlike his previous glasses, this one is very clear and suits perfectly his sight. Mama is actually asking now if she can borrow it. hehe.

The whole experience is very overwhelming, thanks Jins Philippines for this opportunity. You guys definitely made this Fathers Day extra special for my Papa. I’ll surely come back to get my prescription glasses ... zettai!

Self-Isolation Diary: A Day in the Life of Designer Andrew Coimbra
As people around the country wind down their sixth week of self-isolation, FASHION is reaching out to some of our favourite Canadians to get a peek into how they’re living their lives in lockdown (remember: #StayHomeSaveLives). Each week, keep an eye out for new self-isolation diaries from actors, designers, athletes and artists who are riding this uncertain time out with us.
Andrew Coimbra, Designer
Wheeewwww!

The last few weeks have been a very unique and challenging experience. Like many, I’ve become incredibly focused on the climbing numbers that reflect the infection rates across the world, the new government protocols in response to those numbers, and the personal stories coming from friends all over the world. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel consumed by it. It feels like we’re living in a Margaret Atwood novel!

It should go without saying that my heart goes out to my friends and members of my family who are in the healthcare industry. I have made a point of touching base to check in with them often, and making sure that they have a non-healthcare industry person to vent to. People underestimate how emotionally exhausting a role in healthcare can be on a ‘normal’ day, and that the opportunity to escape the internal politics of it all can be a gift.

In the meantime, I have been keeping myself busy—or I should say, I have been made to be kept busy by virtue of my living situation. I am lucky enough to live with my amazing family—nine of us in one house. It’s all part of the European new-immigrant fantasy established by my Avó and Avô (Portuguese for Grandmother and Grandfather), honeyyyy!

As our family business is still in operation (it is considered an ‘essential business’ by the Government of Ontario at the time of writing this), my niece and nephew have been stuck at home and require home schooling. My mother and I have been taking turns playing Educator. I fear for their future because I don’t imagine they’ll be able to hand in any valuable schoolwork with my strict curriculum of RuPaul’s Drag Race, mid-day face mask breaks, playing with Barbie/Ken dolls, and trying on different IG filters.

Joking… mostly.

When I’m not in ‘Guncle’ mode, I’ve been pretty focused on mapping out the future of my label, now more than ever. I’ve done a little bit of reaching out to other designers to see where their heads are, but I think for the most part everyone’s situation is so unique and that has a very big impression on their trajectory. The cancellation of Men’s Fashion Week in Paris at the end of June was a huge milestone, and after such a weak Fall 2020 buying season in February (affected by the onset outbreak of COVID-19 in Asia), it was an unwelcome added layer of ‘grim.’
To be quite honest I’ve thought, ‘what is the point?’ at least five times before really reflecting and thinking more optimistically about where the world might be for the Spring 2021 retail period.

So, I’ve excitedly begun developing Spring 2021.

A bit of really good news that helped me feel more confident about this decision is that I was just selected as a finalist in a design competition that is a partnership between Not Just a Label, a really fantastic platform that works to support emerging design talent internationally, and Swatch On, an equally fantastic online resource for fabric. I can’t release details just yet, but I am excited nonetheless because the prize of a credit to use toward fabric purchasing takes the huge weight of allocating budget to fabric purchasing off my shoulders, and ultimately makes focusing on other components in the process a lot easier.

I’m desperately worried about the long-term effects—economically, emotionally and physically—that the pandemic will have on all of us. But for now I am trying to maintain an optimistic outlook on how we can use this moment to train ourselves to be more mindful of others and the ways in which we can make the systems many of us rely on more accessible to marginalized individuals, so that we are better equipped in the future.
