my 35 cents in the walrus v fairy discourse:

ive seen a couple "pro-fairy" posts talking about how upending the existence of fairies would be, especially in a world where prank shows exist so a walrus winding up at ones doorstep might just be some elaborate prank. and i hear you, but hear me out.

a lot of people, even on a low level, already believe in fairies. just think about it we have RULES for how to interact with a fairy if one ever appears. on a low level, fairies as a supernatural that suddenly exists is on the lower end of the spectrum. id honestly be more surprised if jesus actually came back.

but if a WALRUS goes missing in any context, someone notices. theres this walrus in australia or something that just walks around and does end up on peoples doorstep and even though they know it might happen its still surprising. why? because its a multi-tonne creature that ends up on your doorstep and no one beforehand said anything until you saw it. we are certain walruses exist but also certain that there are so many people keeping track of walruses that if some asshole did manage to snatch one up for a prank show, SOMEONE would notice. just the existence of walruses are a little shocking in my opinion, let alone a traveling, knocking, walrus.

i learned that platypuses are actually teal sometimes like in phineas and ferb and do you wanna whats still more shocking, the existence of platypuses. a creature that is a beaver-duck mammal that sweats milk and lays eggs. like whatever cruel god is out there was playing pin-the-tail on the mammal and kept missing. sometimes the acceptance of new seemingly impossible information is easier than new improbable information.

saw someone say what if it's a fairy disguised in a walrus and immediately thought of a trojan walrus. like someone pissed off a bunch of fairies and the most logical thing in their collective minds to do was build a realistic walrus, hide inside of it, travel to their doorstep, knock and wait to attack (ig?).

“declaring a specific word/concept that you (apparently) find meaningless as necessarily meaningless for everyone else as well” you’re missing the context of the post, it was a response to a bunch of so-called new atheists who didn’t actually understand that atheism is solely a lack of belief that in deities, and doesn’t automatically equate hating religion or having any other worldview(esp bc some religions have atheistic strains or allow for atheism). The new state it’s got really nasty and started saying rude stuff to atheist Jews and Buddhists for being atheist the “wrong way,” and refused to believe there were actual examples of who practice religion, so OP found that concept of igttheism from a rabbi and posted it as a RESPONSE to their bullying to shut them up.

ah that's fair, reading up on what was happening it all seems a bit ridiculous, yeah

i've mostly stayed away from the whole "cultural christianity" discourse, i think i once commented in the tags of that post that also included black and white thinking as culturally christian (which, LOL) that i'm apparently less culturally christian than i thought, based on what was listed (including black and white thinking lmao), and another time i wrote this comment, because i mostly assume that people who are atheist are also materialist, though i'm perfectly aware that that's not necessarily the case (also, since the post this comment is on is about jewish atheism, i should make it clear that to me jewish atheists are jews that don't believe in god, no additional caveats, as should be obvious). it's also why i nowadays usually say that i don't believe in the supernatural, which covers everything from gods to ghosts to life force to "being connected to everything" (i.e. when any of that constitutes there being a special power in it, one not described by the laws of physics). that makes me atheist and materialist i guess i also think that a world with a higher power would be one that i would have to resent (including its potential creator), which some describe as antitheism, and in that case i'm antitheist i think that belief in the supernatural, especially a personal higher power, can be dangerous because it can be used as a tool with no internal checks – being convinced that a higher power is telling you to do something cannot be argued against because there are no outside reference points to reach and deal with that conviction. some might also see that as antitheism ig i don't hate people who believe in god or any other kind of the supernatural and in that sense i'm not antitheist

as can be seen with the latter term (and cultural christianity has a somewhat similar problem it seems, though still less pronounced), some labels have been used in so many different ways that using them without clarification can lead to misunderstanding and i for one wouldn't use them without making clear what i mean by them. another issue in the whole debate seems to be that some people understand labels as parts of their identity rather than simply descriptors, so they understand discussions about them as potential personal attacks and that never leads to constructive dialogue; and yet it seems like that's hard to avoid with any label – the same pitfalls exist with "gay", "feminist" etc.

back to the main issue at hand though, as with the linked post above, i still don't appreciate what seem to be basically semantic arguments. i stand by what i said there and even though i understand the gotcha moment can be satisfying when dealing with people that annoy or even harrass you, it doesn't take away from the fact that the gotcha there is just not a good argument; it just smells of sophistry to me, what can i say also going back and seeing people in the notes being like "that's basically what i believe" it's like ... i don't want to put words in your mouth but

that post from queeranarchism about transmascs just blatantly at the start basically says that transmascs don't face issues irl, only online within the community. idek what to say to that. i also found it funny the wording they used to describe how the community treats trans murder victims. like... yeah. our lists of remembrance only tend to include transfems. no one talks about the transmascs that are murdered. that's part of the erasure we face??? ig we should just pretend it doesn't happen

yeah the “list of remembrance” comment in particular leaves a bad taste in my mouth bc multiple times i’ve had trans men and mascs and nonbinary people tell me that they’ve been scolded for bringing up anyone but trans women on trans day of remembrance or trans day of visibility, like were told that it was a day only for trans women and femmes. i’ve also heard of multiple accounts of people (and experienced myself) trying to find trans resources like clothes or healthcare assistance irl and only being provided with resources for just trans femmes and maybe some info about binders. so how are we supposed to get a clear picture of what each group is facing when several groups are routinely told they aren’t allowed to speak? this goes back to the very beginning of the modern trans community, decades ago, how many gatherings left out or were even actively hostile to ftms, regardless of how many mtfs spoke out against it. this wasn’t “online discourse” this was real, in person community that ftms missed out on.

i also think one of the issues with how we talk about transphobia is that almost every time i see it talked about, it’s entirely centered around things that trans women face that maybe some other trans people face too. it’s like there’s this huge venn diagram with a bunch of circles all meeting in the middle, but people only base what they consider to be “real transphobia” on the “trans women” circle, so thinks like gynecological abuse, the criminalization of masculinizing hrt, the way a lot of anti-trans bills are focused on “our poor daughters and their wombs must be saved”, all that gets swept under the rug and the severity of it isn’t recognized or it’s considered “just misogyny”. a trans woman doesn’t face less transphobia than me because she doesn’t have a uterus, and it would be fucking abhorrent to say so. so i don’t see how it’s appropriate to say other trans people face less transphobia because their experiences aren’t exactly the same as a trans woman’s.

But dude! Every section of this fandom really so different and yet so similar in how they treasure their faves--y'know what I'm gonna gush and gossip on my blog I might as well call out some particularly biased folks who follow me

Innitblr and Dreblr are so fucking funny to me, they hate each other and yet have immaculate hcs but also just conflicting interpretations of the narrative?? they are all specimens, the lot of them (i cheekily eye the warrior cats inniter and the one with the luigi icon from innitblr and that fluffy soft dream artist + that person who kickstarted dream eating the prison pets hc; you four are fun but tempting to stuff in a room together)

Crimeboys and Rivals duo enthusiasts scare me, i like both dynamics but holy shit guys

I wish Happyduo/Badlands tumblr were louder why are they always in nooks and crannies or maybe i'm not looking hard enough idk; same goes for ppsat stans and i guess tirettwt stans to some degree

Feral boys enjoyers are cool, though imo out of most of the circles in dsmpblr, they're the most tropey with hcs and aus? idk, but a good lot take from impressions compared to sbi-centric fans who seem more in-depth when hc and au creating; not a criticism, just an observation

The fun in following everyone, especially when the conflicting takes follow after the other, is just reevaluating a take in real time? Idk, but I'm glad my blog has been good to you. I do think it takes a particular patience to scour apologist blogs, especially the ones with salt and bite. It's fun watching vaguing when you know where it's coming from. But man, there's something eye opening finding good takes. It's why I love analysis in this fandom no matter how messy it gets sometimes.
