As #blackouttuesday comes to a close, I wanted to post an excerpt of the Op-Ed in the @latimes by @kareemabduljabbar_33 "Don't understand the protests? What you're seeing is people pushed to the edge." Don't let Tuesday be just another hashtag. It's not a one-day thing. The fight for an end to police brutality against black & brown people isn't going to happen overnight. Racism isn't ending overnight. This fight has been going on for such a long time. We must stay vigilant. Ways you can be a true ally are to have those uncomfortable conversations with your friends and family. Own up to your mistakes. Educate yourself and educate them. Vote. Engage in strategic protest. Be informed. Connect with organizations. Be an advocate. Support black owned businesses. Donate to community organizations. Listen more and speak less. And most importantly, don't partake in the culture if you're not going to partake in the struggle. The movement never stops. If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. Lines have been drawn. Don't cherry pick history. Learn all of it. Not just the good. The bad too. The history we were taught in school growing up was either sugar coated or straight up lies. The sooner this country not only acknowledges it but actually works on healing, the better chance we have to slowly move forward. It's gonna take everyone. When I talk about #culturalappropriation this is what I mean. Oh, you say you like rap music? Oh, you say you have a "black friend" or a "Mexican friend"? Oh, you say love #Beyonce ?" Oh, you say love #tacotuesday ? Oh, you'd vote for @barackobama for a 3rd term? Your silence on issues like the murder of #ahmaudarbery matter. To the few allies us poc have, I thank you. But sadly there are more of them than there are of you. Educate yourselves on what #privilege really means and what #racialinequality means. America loves black culture, cherry picking the things they want to support, which is entertainment and athletics. But when poc need y'all to stand by our sides and fight with us for justice and equality, most remain silent. They'll turn the other cheek because it makes ya'll uncomfortable and it isn't convenient for y'all. Black and brown people can't do this alone. For the small number of allies we do have, I see you.
