My vote is talk to the person you’re closest to who seemed the most on your side, and phrase it along the lines of, “this felt kinda pressure-y and uncomfortable, am I reading it right? Does [jerk] always joke like that? Do you think I hurt anyone’s feelings by not going?” Most likely they’ll insist it was just joking and normal - but you’ve still drawn their attention to it, and ifandwhen it happens again or gets worse you can call upon this person for back-up. There’s also a chance that they’ll be an awesome person who says “yeah that wasn’t cool of [jerk] at all, I was just uncomfortable too and that’s why I didn’t say anything” and then you can make a friendship pact to back each other up in those situations.
Giving the benefit of the doubt doesn’t mean not taking any steps at all to procure allies in the face of jerks. :)
ngh so
I’m really trying to make friends with my coworkers here, it’s really important for several reasons
last night a bunch of us went out to eat and then back to someone’s house to drink for a while. the drinking was ok but I’m not a big fan of just sitting in a room and chatting even when drunk, so i was kinda bored. at about 11 or 11:30, the rest of them decided to go out to a club. at this point i had pretty much drank as much as is fun in one night (for me, anyway) and i was almost falling asleep cause of the lateness and the alcohol. so i said i was pretty much done for the night and wouldn’t be going with them to the club.
they put a ton of pressure on me to go anyway. it stayed on the level of nominally joking, but one guy in particular would not let the conversation get off the subject of, “come on, lex, don’t be a wet blanket.” (and several other insults that i don’t really want to rehash.) it made me super uncomfortable, and I’m particularly disturbed that no one in the group, some of whom i kind of thought were my friends, said anything like, “give it a rest already, [the one asshole]” or “okay, have a good night then, lex”. i didn’t say goodbye when i went home, because i knew if i had another conversation with them it would just be more haranguing me to go.
i really don’t know what to do at this point. do i give them the benefit of the doubt? there’s a certain case to be made that they thought i really did want to go and didn’t feel allowed to, but even if they thought so, i want them to stop and not do anything like that again! i could just talk to the main perpetrator – if it wasn’t for him, i don’t think it would have been a big deal – probably just some light-hearted teasing and “aw, see you next time then”. i could talk to the person in the group I’m closest to, since even though she was teasing me about it she did seem to respect my decision (don’t know how to explain it). should i hope that the fact that i didn’t go along after all that (and didn’t say goodbye at the end of the night) speaks for itself? should i only bring it up if it happens again?

If I ever find love and get married...
1. He has to like or love roller coasters. I refuse to ride them alone. 2. He must like or love all things Disney. I come from a Disney obsessed family. 3. He can’t go hunting. I’d cry every time (for the animals).
