Day 20 : Tear

The talk between Ryuji & Ishida after the Oracle incident.

Brace for angst 😬

Ishida steps on a branch, cracking it to make his presence known. Ryuji turns fast, his arrow aimed high, and freezes when he sees Ishida.

For a second, Ishida’s mind flashes to the day his sister died, and what she may have seen in her last moments. He thinks maybe Ryuji should release the arrow. That he should kill him as they sent him to do all those years ago. You deserve it. He thinks. It was supposed to be you. But slowly, Ryuji lowers his bow, his hands raw and bloodied from repeated firing.

Ishida’s magic stirs with desire to heal them, to kiss the wounds clean, but he wills it silent. Afraid that his touch will be rejected.

“Takashi said I’d find you here,” He says, his index finger and thumb rubbing together.

Ryuji rolls his shoulders and turns away, raising his bow at the target. He fires without a word.

Ishida watches him, his mind scrambling to find the words to know what to say. The wounds on Ryuji’s fingers open wider with every pull of the string. The tension in his muscles grip tighter like a tourniquet. A puffy, red rim surrounds his eyes. You did this. Ishida says to himself. And every snap of the bow’s string is another crack to his own heart.

“Ryuji… I didn’t… I never wanted,” he fumbles.

“How could you not tell me?!” Ryuji asks, dropping the bow on the ground. He turns to Ishida, eyes ablaze.

Ishida snaps his mouth shut, his insides shaking.

“You knew! You knew all this time! How could you not tell me?!”

Ishida stands frozen, watching him helplessly.

“You should hate me! You should want me dead! I just,” something flickers across Ryuji’s face. “Is that what this was?” He asks. “A lie? Some plot for revenge?“

Ishida’s eyes go wide. “No,” he croaks. His stomach twisting.

Ryuji rubs the back of his neck. “Then why? How could you not?” he stops, his voice breaking. He closes his eyes to compose himself.

Ishida clenches his fist. Everything in him is buzzing. It’s like his soul is being chiseled away. Part of him wants to run or send his magic outside of his body so he can tear himself to pieces. Another wants to take Ryuji to bed, to kiss his worries and pain away, as Ryuji had done for him. That time seems unreachable now.

“She was your sister,” Ryuji says, unable to shake the quiver in his voice.

“I killed your sister.” He chokes out the words like he’s spitting out glass. “How could you not tell me? How could you let us … this” he gestures between them, leaving the question hang.

Ishida blinks through the tears staining tracks down his cheeks. “By the time I knew, it was too late,” he says.

Ryuji takes a step forward, anger written in every curve of his face.

“Too late?” He echoes, “Too late for what?!”

“I was already in love with you.”

All the anger seems to evaporate from Ryuji. His face crumbles like he’s going to cry. Ishida smiles, shrugging slightly, tears still streaming down his face. Ryuji leans forward as if reaching out for him, but then he goes rigid. He takes a step back and then another, shaking his head.

“Ryuji,” Ishida whispers, but the archer keeps walking.

“I don’t think I can do this.”

“Ryuji please…”

“And you shouldn’t want to.”

Ryuji grabs his bow off the ground and walks back towards the camp. He doesn’t look back.

Ishida waits, watching the current of the river. He waits for the last pieces of his heart to crumble away and for acceptance to dry his tears.

And then, as the sun sets below the mountains, Ishida fastens his cloak, and disappears into the forest.

I love my birthday;  it’s a super neat date (10/10), I also love Marvel, and reading fanfic that beats up my favorite characters, so let’s combine it all and hate ourselves!
