It’s interesting how, when complaints like these arise, they always seem to be directed at books written and read primarily by women. Romance, chick lit, romantasy, smut, YA books… literally the same criticisms since Jane Austen and her fellow “scribbling women” put pen to paper. Remember Jonathan Franzen not wanting “The Corrections” to be an Oprah’s Book Club selection? Aside from the occasional obligatory James Patterson shade (which I primarily see from other library/bookstore employees who mostly just want him leave some shelf space for other ppl), I don’t come across a lot of folks wringing their hands about people who exclusively read formulaic action thrillers or mysteries. Funny, that.

Re: the possibility that YA’s demographic is trending older, I don’t *completely* disagree. YA has exploded since I was a teen, and many of the books are more interesting and better-written than what was on offer in the ‘90s. There’s enough quality YA that it makes sense some adults want to read it. I’ve personally read a lot of queer YA because I came out late, and the vast (vast, VAST) majority of fiction about coming to terms with your sexuality is about teens and young adults (coming out “late” in fiction usually means a protagonist who’s like 27, and sometimes that feels weirdly *less* relatable somehow?). At any rate, there’s this sort of blurry area now of “new adult” which I suppose is meant to bridge that gap for people ostensibly “aging out” of YA. “Fourth Wing” (which is *not* shelved as YA, at least not in my library btw) could maybe be considered New Adult fantasy.

Here’s the thing: people are allowed to read whatever the fuck they want, forever. They can read for entertainment, they can read for education, they can read for something to wank to. They can read literary classics. They can read nonfiction. They can read children’s mystery stories (The Westing Game still holds up), they can read books they heard about on NPR, they can read books they heard about on TikTok. They can even read James Patterson. Plenty of people read across genres and age levels. They read an escapist fantasy and then they read something that won the Booker. They read a book about current events and then they read a series mystery. But even if they don’t. If all they ever read is Tom Clancy or Nora Roberts or Stephen King or manga or the latest “BookTok Sensation” — I don’t care. Do I have my own opinions about what constitutes worthwhile or quality reading? Absolutely. But those opinions will be forever superseded by my steadfast belief that it’s better for people to be reading than not, that it’s none of my business what they choose to read, and that what they read is not necessarily a reflection of what else they are doing or thinking about. Maybe someone’s a tireless activist and wants to unwind with something fluffy. Maybe they’re depressed, and the only thing they can concentrate on is cozy tea shop mysteries. And if someone is simply a “basic bitch” who wants to read Colleen Hoover or whoever…I also don’t care. They don’t need to justify that to me or anyone else.

There’s a worthwhile discussion to be had about publishing trends (by people who know more about that side of books than I do), but there’s no worthwhile reason to shame people for their reading tastes.

trope: Anything with like the Winchesters caring about and caring for Cas. I just rly like Cas being taken care of :') pls wrap him in a blanket and pat his shoulder brusque-softly in ur emotionally repressed way Dean

bottom line my emphasis tends to be more on character and plot. I can't do plot without character, the relationships - whether ship or gen - are important to my enjoyment of a fic. I can sit thru a lot if the characters/character dynamics are good and chewy lmao like u can rly sink ur teeth into it

Banning sane adults from enjoying problematic contents and denying their desires is misleading and unpractical. As problematic contents are being created and transmitted their meanings are constantly changed and rewritten during the process. The results is that, images and texts can be associated in complicated, and often indirect ways to consumers, so they are never the real cause of reallife harm as long as they're not products of harm in the first place.

However, certain discourse can be perpetuated during the spreading and transmision of such contents. Like sexism, racism, violence, discrimination, facism, oppression, etc. What matters is how such issues are being presented, not whether they exist or not (and we all know reality is far nastier than fiction).

Here are some very biased personal thought: most of problematic contents are bullshit. People seem to think traumas are so easy to come to terms with, and people who're hurt are always surrounded by those who love and care about them. As such narrative always poses as positive, loving, and sympathetic, it's at best good will but mostly it's just bad writing.

If life is rose garden, who needs fiction anyway. And by this I actually mean if your opinions of the world is so optimistic and pure and innocent you won't be able to write problematic content with complexity and subtlety and I already know you're a terrible writer.

So back to problematic contents. Some of them, if read reflectively, really don't suggest bad stuff happen in real life, and can be highly critical of it in their own way. They can be dangerous to some but they are meant to be meaningful exploration and study of human life. Even more, they sometimes become outlets of pains and traumas, and survivors cope with their life by rewriting their experiences (and if, in such case, people choose to romanticize and fetishize something a little, what's wrong with it? The world's hurting we enough, and we should have at least this, how uncomfortable it might look to others.)

There are also pure bad contents with no good value other than ablility to rouse sexual desires. But should we ban them? People get off from all kinds of shit, from rubber ducks to mass murder. While these people are not exactly the ones raping or murdering others for fun, should their desires be denied simply because they're so wrong? And if we want to better the living conditions of people of gender and race and undereprented experiences and identies, and also appreciate their feelings to create a less-awful future for everyone, does these goals really have to contradict with respecting privacy and personal entertainment? Especially when said entertainment only involves fictional characters who are only vessels of our tastes but no one's to claim. I just don't understand why ppl think they can have sweet fluff but others can't enjoy non-con and gore.

When people respect each other and have their own tags, things should be in good order, everyone happy, nobody gets hurt. But in fact the internet has all everything right in your face without your consent because it's a cesspool of luste, hate, and evil thoughts. It makes you think people who you'll never meet your enemies, but sometimes they're just not, even if they enjoy some problematic contents that challenge your worldview or disrespect you by your own standard. But the biggest evil are those with the power and resources to filter internet contents, regulate internet communities, and restrict bad content transmission. People with different worldviews are not enemies, and I hate poorly informed people all the time, but. Choose your war to fight.

Last advice to folks who're sensitive to be triggered: stay away from too much internet. People have imaginations and bad thoughts, but they exist, and will continue to. Take time to heal. I do it all the time. Produce better contents if you will.

this catches luke’s attention, and he finds the little kitten’s persistence endearing as they walk past

even tho luke insists it’s okay if they don’t get the kitten, tori drags him inside anyway and they go to the pen, and the little kitten is waiting for them on the other side

it’s a calico and it’s not until they’re inside that they notice this little kitten’s eye is injured on its right side (bc of glare from the window outside)

luke is only able to stare, too in shock to really move or think, but tori picks up the mewling ball of fluff and coos at it. then she holds it out for luke to take. and he’s hesitant at first, bc its so small and fragile, but tori gently coaxes it into his arms. and he rests it on his shoulder and it falls asleep, the precious bby

luke panics at that, though, bc he doesn’t know what to do lol. tori is not help, she just laughs and smiles at him

one of the workers goes over to them then and says that injured animals are always tough to sell, so tori, of course, immediately says they’ll buy this kitten

anyway, her official name is jiji, but her nickname is kitty bc that’s what luke referred to her as when they first brought her home and it kinda stuck.

they’ll sometimes hang out with like percy and annabeth (and maybe the other couples from the seven JASON IS STILL ALIVE I SAID EVERYONE LIVES!AU + nico and will, etc.), but it’s more in a mentor kind of way, since luke and tori are so much older than all of them. they’re good to go to for advice abt relationships, and also life in general

i like to think they are able to make friends with couples their age through places like the waystation that are hidden throughout the mortal world, but they’re wary abt new ppl bc they’ve had so many bad experiences, just in general (not necessarily with ppl)

so if you do manage to become a friend and they ask you to go on a double date with them with your partner, it’s ride or die for them (and it better be mutual)

quiet nights in, mundane date nights out–anything a normal couple would do bc they’ve been through enough already, they don’t need more excitement/trauma

that, of course, doesn’t stop monsters from attacking them when they go out. but after a battle, they’ll go home, clean up, and cuddle on the bed with lofi music playing in the background and scented candles lit around the room

tori did regarding their private confirmation of being in a relationship since she’s demi, and she’d told luke so. he didn’t want to push her into anything she was uncomfortable with, esp if her feelings stayed platonic/friendly, so he let her take the reins

luke does bc he knows tori likes it when he does romantic things she’s seen in movies

who is the best cook

neither really, since they didn’t exactly grow up in traditional homes

but a few years after the war and of living together, tori decides to take classes on mexican cuisine to reconnect a little more with her roots and her mom. luke joins her, obvi, bc he cares and love her duh

tori’s the better cook tho; luke likes to bake
