Karen loved Martha and she was unashamed of loving Martha. She attended Martha's funeral knowing how it would be perceived. Mrs Tilford cleared their names but there would still have been gossip, especially with the way Martha died, there would have been so much speculation on why she did it. Yet Karen refused to fail Martha and declared to everyone attending that she would miss her with "all her heart". In front of all the townsfolk, she walked away alone with her head held high
