I just want to take a moment and note how a huge part of the reason that OMD happened was because Spider-Editorial INSISTED vigorously and continue to insist that Spider-Man being married chained him down. That it prevented writers from telling new stories about Spider-Man that it stagnated the series. And yet, despite all this, the Post-OMD comics have been nothing but an endless rut where an unbreakable status quo is reasserted and the same basic plots are redone infinitely and recursively.
They have been repeating the same story beats over and over and over ever since OMD. The Inheritors, clones, Green Goblin “going all out”, reviving dead characters, supporting cast members turning evil, villains turning good, Peter and Mary Jane breaking up, Mary Jane getting a new boyfriend, Peter getting a new girlfriend, teasing Peter and MJ back together, Lizard bouncing back and forth on whether which personality is in control, and now they’ve been reduced to rehashing fucking Jackpot of all things.
It’s the same shit over and over and over and over again with little to no variation, and the repetitions and retcons and resets have reached the point of overlapping with each other; Doc Ock alone has died, revived, and/or switched sides at least FIVE TIMES IN A ROW in the last decade with each leading directly into the other, and apparently he is going to be doing it AGAIN given Slott is doing yet fucking another Superior Spider-Man book, this near-immediately after Otto was just reset back into being a villain. The plots are so constrained by editorial edicts and the Boy’s Club attitude of keeping Spider-Man “evergreen” that this series — one that built its name on dynamically progressing in relative realish time — is stagnating obnoxiously and to an extent that I think only Batman has ever come close to reaching.
Spider-Man’s comics are now almost literally a Sisyphean nightmare. Rolling the same boulders up the same hill forever. What’s that saying about the definition of insanity being doing the same thing perpetually and expecting it to end differently each time you try?
As an additional note, me and my best friend are amateur writers and one of the projects we have tucked away and periodically tinker with is a pitch for an Immortal Hulk-style horror run on Spider-Man where the premise is basically framing Spidey’s Post-OMD status quo as a Serial Experiments Lain/Twin Peaks type surrealist hell that is slowly driving Spidey and his supporting cast and rogues insane. We first came up with the bare skeleton of the idea back around when Superior Spider-Man ended. Fast forward to now, and EVERYTHING we intended to parody and deconstruct with that pitch has only become EVEN WORSE.
I'm fuckinh speechless they really are gonna make MJ a superhero with ger tragic origin being the "death" of her "kids"
BRB gonna kill myself
