I'm going to be bitching about a book series so if you don't want any negativity, please skip reading this post.
I'm so sad and angry how the Anita Blake series has went downhill.
I honestly think an actual editor would be able to force Hamilton to write actual quality content instead of the stuff we get.
I have a lot to thank for this series, it helped me through a really tough period of my life so the early books are always going to be near and dear to me, and it also helped me explore my sexuality, but it's so disheartening to see something you love crumble before your eyes.
I don't mind that Anita Blake as a character is Hamilton's self-insert and power fantasy, however, Anita Blake (the character) has become so overpowered that it makes her bland. Her personality has barely shifted and every dialogue and conversation is always about the same topics, and it's frustrating.
In a lot of cases, as readers we can separate a character's attitudes and thoughts from the author, sadly, the same can't be said in Hamilton's case. Her writing comes across as incredibly tone-deaf because she won't admit that police in the USA are out of control and police in her books are most of the time presented as these knights of shining armor.
It would be nice if as readers we could provide genuine feedback, but Hamilton simply ignores any criticism (hence her not having an editor) and her views on fanfiction squashes any creativity someone who loves the series would love to create.
I'm going to be honest, I haven't paid for the last 5 books because I can't financially support an author who disregards everyone around her.
I'd rather wait 5 years for a quality book than have Hamilton churn our subpar ones ever 1-2 years.
