Without having watched Adventure Time?

Or maybe you watched up to like season 3 when you were twelve, or caught a few episodes while high in college. Regardless, you've seen images of that wet meow meow old man or the the cute sword chick or the gay vamp/sugar queen pair and you're curious. You want in, and you don't wanna slog through 10 seasons of TV first.

Absolutely valid. That said, I do think that Fionna and Cake is… nearly impenetrable if you don't have at least some grounding in the original series.

So here you go: a curated list of 19 episodes to get you more-or-less up to speed. Most AT eps are only 11 min long so it shouldn't take long to get through! And while you'll definitely still be confused about some elements in the series, i think sitting there going 'huh, wha?' is an important part of the Adventure Time experience.

I was thinking of Sylvanas and her narrative and I remembered that scene in War Crimes where she breaks down and thinks how foolish it was of her to believe she can love and how her pain from trying to feel that was a warning that in the end she "[...] would be left alone. Again, and always"

And I thought when reading that, well that's terrible, surely something good will happen to her right? Surely something good happens and makes her feel that trusting and loving and hoping aren't mistakes and wanting them doesn't make her weak and being undead doesn't change how worthy she is of them!..

And then BtS and BfA and Shadowlands come and Sylvanas is turned into a complete monster, rejected by Alleria, gets her connection with Forsaken severed as well, gets used and deceived by the guy responsible for the Lich King (whom she still trusted because thought them similar), has her only romantic interest killed, gets called a monster by a pre-trauma version of *herself*, and then sent to atone in the Maw, being alone (without any humanoid capable of speech) in there for what's been at least 5 years. Like what the fuck :/

I also love how like books have stuff like Sylvanas hearing her friends calling her monster (when she was just freed from Arthas) or Vereesa saying she's not her beloved sister.

And Sylvanas thinks "perhaps they're right" and "I am... and I am not" and absolutely nothing fucking happens to tell her that they're not right and it's not okay to think that, no, quite the opposite, she's just "evolved" into becoming people she hated most: mostly Arthas, plus with a Garrosh-like plot in BfA :/

Speaking of her own perception of herself, in the book after the ambush on Arthas she has these doubts: "She was still Sylvanas. Wasn't she?"

It makes me ultra sad because while in Edge of Night we get stuff like her concluding "no she was the same, in death as in life", but the way BfA went, it led to "I believe Sylvanas Windrunner is well and truly lost" and the added Shadowlands soul shard thing went into "I died trying to stop that monster only to wake up haunted by the one with my face"...

That makes the answer for the question of "she was still Sylvanas, wasn't she?" be "nope you're not, Arthas made you into a monster and you're doomed to grow into his own image".

It makes Lor'themar going "She is gone and truth be told I am glad for it. Let's remember her as she was, that was *our* Sylvanas not the monster wearing her face" right, it makes Vereesa's "You're not she who was my beloved sister" be correct, it makes Alleria's "You're a twisted mockery of my sister" correct and I *hate that*, because all that bullshit came *before* Teldrassil, but after Teldrassil her haters can now go "See they were right she was always evil :) real Sylvanas was killed by Arthas", and in universe characters also cannot be blamed because ew why should they treat such a monster better?

And then it's Sylvanas who needs to apologize and atone and seek amends and feel regrets but nothing is required of her family and friends from high elf days.

Ah, in the same theme, I also love the book having a moment of her thinking:

Do we get something about her still being herself and others having no right to treat her the way they did and... ah ye of course not it's completely true Banshee Queen is something separate and evil and here, have the Ranger General put back in, because clearly Arthas' actions mutilated her so thoroughly there was no trace of her old seft left to be saved, and OF COURSE, only after *that* do her ex friends and family express a feeling of "Aw I'd wish to spend more time with her it's the first time I see Sylvanas may be back"

The way her sisters are written I wonder if they even love Sylvanas at all.

They seem to only like that idealized version of her when she was alive that they remember. Why would they wish to speak to that MONSTER that replaced her in undeath?

Ask her how it feels to be undead? What exactly happened in Quel'thalas and how it felt to be under Arthas? Ask why did she join the Horde? Ask how she came to lead the Forsaken? Ask what she did after Arthas died? Ooof no that would be so tough to say, that would be a SAD talk, they'll have to listen to this horrible nasty angry banshee trauma dumping on them, and they just want their sweet noble SISTER back, who doesn't have such burdens :) How good it is the magic soul shit fulfilled their wish :)

Also bruh what does that even mean for Sylvanas herself?

What the fuck was she supposed to do to make them see her as their sister BEFORE the soul mending shit???

Somehow turn off her red eye glow? Stop being angry? (aka calm down and not feel a burning hatred for being brutalized by a manchild of a knight, rejected by everyone and failing to take revenge on him :/).

Kneel before them and say she's a horrible elf being and deserves everything bad happening to her?.. (Their reunions happened before Teldrassil, where most of her crimes were out of a desperate desire to survive in a hostile world)

Forget her silly trauma and simply behave like she did pre death? (Easier said than done)

These bitches did nothing to help Sylvanas heal and now that she's magically restored (and I don't even think it's even healed, she's just now plagued with guilt about doing everything she did), they do wanna talk to her. Yay.

Hm maybe The War Within has it better? Alright-

That's what you have to say about your sister who got murdered, raised, tortured, enslaved, forced to participate in the genocide of your species, then rejected by friends, family and Alliance?

Yeah the fact she killed herself after being denied closure against her abuser and after being sent to suffer in hell fell under the influence of a guy who said he understands her and they're similar and showed her that even afterlives aren't fair is TOTALLY just on her!

Yep totally just Sylvanas losing herself to herself and not the fact none of you assholes extended a hand and tried to ask her how she felt at any point of her miserable unlife.

So, do you think all the universes we see come fr a wish, or some just happen to exist? Farmworld and Lichworld are wishes we've already seen, but it's hard to imagine who's wish could have caused Vampworld.

Maybe Winter King's nice about "manifesting your own reality" implies that world was born out of an Ice King's wish, who maybe just wanted to stop being so sad all the time.

Well, we know some universes aren't born from Wishes because Prismo explicitly said that about Flapjackworld!

But I also think, with the thematic focus being given to Wishes in this series, it's very likely that all of the universes we've seen were probably born from Wishes... or at least it's fun to speculate about lol

However, I personally find it unlikely that Winterworld was born from a Wish made by the Ice King/Simon, and it's actually for the same reason I don't think it's 'unlikely' that someone wished for Vampireworld - a Wish granted by Prismo always backfires on the wisher.

The only way Jake got around it is by changing the Lich's Wish, so "I wish for Finn and Jake to go back home to Ooo" would turn out badly for the Lich, which would mean it would go right for... basically everyone else.

We've seen it with Farmworld, which went very very badly for Finn, AND ALSO hit him with the pedantic ironic twist of the difference between asking that the Lich never existed and asking that he won't exist in the future

And like, the only reason Farmworld Lich was stopped was because he and Ice Finn/the Snowman were threatening every reality and that forced Prismo to initiate that Crossover. And the only reason why Finn was freed from the Magic Crown's curse was because Mainworld Finn begged for it. If the Farmworld Lich hadn't started poking around the Multiverse, Farmworld Finn's fate would've been to be the Lich's Mad and Sad right-hand goon... forever.

And even now, that world is a pretty lousy place in general, and not exactly super-great for Finn in specific

Extinctworld went badly for the Lich by just... giving him what he wants but showing him the futility and lack of satisfaction in his ultimate goal. Leaving him basically extremely depressed.

According to Word of God, Babyworld was a Wish made by BMO and it backfired by making them into an inanimate (...or at least seemingly inanimate) Baby Monitor.

So when I'm thinking who is likely to have Wished up a World, I'm thinking what sort of Wish could've lead to that timeline... but also who got fucked over the most by the changes. As such I have a hard time believing Ice King/Simon created Winterworld, since, like, the Winter King is basically the only actually happy person in that whole world?

I mean, I guess turning into a huge asshole that your former self would find morally repugnant would be a kind of Ironic Twists. Or the fact the Candy Queen might've killed him eventually, but I dunno... compared to the other Worlds we've seen, it doesn't feel Ironic enough to me.

Ever since that episode aired, my personal bet has always been that this world was Wished up by Marceline. She has all the Motivation to Wish, like, "I wish Simon could remember who he is". And look how terribly all of this went from her perspective! Simon is 'himself' again but is utterly unrecognizable as the loving surrogate father she remembers. The love of her life is now tormented by that same Curse she tried to free Simon from. And, well, while it's unclear what exactly happened when she and Simon had their falling out...

But doesn't look good for her.

For Vampireworld... I know some people would say that's the Marceline Wish Timeline since there's so much focus on her - but I kinda doubt it for the same reason I doubt the Ice King Winterworld thing. The Star is one of the only two people having an Actual Good Time in that universe and, even if things would've gotten bad eventually, with the dwindling food supply and all, that still feels like kind of a serious slow burn of an Ironic Twist compared to others we've seen.

I think it's most likely that Vampireworld is a Wish from one of the Vampire King's Court we saw back in 'Stakes'.

Between the Star being said to have 'outlived' the rest of the Court, her having seemingly the same powerset as Mainworld Marceline (which she gained by sucking the souls of these Vampires as she slayed them) and her clearly having no qualms about killing her fellow Vampires

I think the implication here is that the Star still killed the Fool, the Empress, the Hierophant, the Moon - but exclusively to become more powerful and gain more approval from her 'dad' in the process.

So I think the Ironic Twist narrative is, like, the Hierophant or someone Wishes for a world where Vampires rule... and that's exactly what they got, but their most hated enemy is still around. And now they get to watch her upstage them, take their rightful spot by the Vampire King's side and then kill and consume them alongside their closest brethren. Then their civilization collapses in on itself due to the lack of food, I think that's plenty Ironic to me.

I've also heard a suggestion that it could've been Peebles' Wish. Like, she tried to Wish Simon never put the Crown on just for Marceline's sake (and to try rid herself of her annoying stalker but still mostly for Marceline's sake)... and she ended up in a grim and dying world without her beloved kingdom, and also without the love that made her give her one Wish for Marcy's happiness instead.

I still think I prefer the Vampire Wish theory, but that one also has pretty solid foundation.

Sylvanas + Arthas? + Jaina?

GhosterM made an epic comment reading partially as follows...

Prequels might not be the best Star Wars movies (although Revenge of the Sith is Top 2 in my heart) but they have some extremely versatile quotes that you can use in pretty much any fandom, works especially well in Warcraft since Arthas and Anakin have some similiar archetypes. Few more that i thought about when commuting:

Also me when i see people shipping Arthas with Sylvanas: "You will go home and rethink your life"

...and now I am of course rethinking. And noting that on AO3 there are 14 works tagged Arthas Menethil/Sylvanas Windrunner and the longest is 93k which is a heck of a lot of words but by no means impossible I know from experience because sometimes things grow on you.

How impossible is it really? Let's approach it methodically.

Arthas freaks out at Stratholme and Northrend under Mal'Ganis' manipulation and that is on him and pretty damn bad. But the rest is theoretically all on Ner'zhul and Frostmourne.

Sylvanas as undead and suffering the same mind control from the Lich King could potentially show some understanding. Or not, because she is seriously pissed at him for substantial and, ahem, heart-felt reasons or one frosty such reason to be precise.

Scratch talking then. They fight, or Sylvanas hatches the plan to mind-control Arthas and send him on a suicide run against higher ups or whatever else - for some reason she uses the hallmark banshee power of possession! Now she has an unimpeded front row seat witnessing the chains on his mind. Spice it up to make that possession cut the link and free Arthas from the Lich Kings control because why not?

Join forces against Lich King preparing to then stamp out Arthas at the first available opportunity? Well, if Kerrigan did it in the Brood Wars so can I, Sylvanas reasons. Off they are to a forced alliance...

Aaand why not toss in the old flame that actually probably WILL listen to Arthas even when nobody else will and who Sylvanas will then seek to assassinate out of spite and to twist the knife deeper into the death knight, only to become touched seeing Jaina's unconditional love and finding herself brooding on how much young Menethil was really his own when desecrating Quel'thalas...

It is in all honesty actually thought-provoking that the Forsaken queen does not ponder more on whether it is Arthas or Ner'zhul pulling the strings, but the Frozen Throne seems to hint that Ner'zhul could be keeping a low profile even among his underlings, which would probably have been a wise move with all the nosy dreadlord supervisors snooping around.

I know of course that a pairing could be pulled off in far simpler ways, but wouldn't it be half the charm to do it in the angsty and limitlessly forgiving and understanding way that Jaina and Sylvanas are to each other in many Sylvaina tales?

After all, if Sylvanas (who in her long life may or may not have done a lot of terrible things too in the bitter, bitter war against the Amani trolls) can be forgiven for so many things done in undeath absent Frostmournian mind control, why not Arthas?

Jaina reunioning with Kel'thuzad whom she personally helped kick out from Dalaran and later hunt down and kill, would just be a bonus.

Silly lil headcanons about the wishes that made the worlds/universes featured in episodes 6 & 7

⚠️ Spoilers for Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake beyond this point ⚠️

Okay so assuming everyone only gets one wish (or at least we'll only see one wish per character) and it inevitibly 'monkey paws' and turns out badly for the person who made the wish, I think Winter World and Vampire World belong to Bubblegum and Marceline respectively.

For Bubblegum's Winter World wish is the one I'm least confident on but it was probably something along the lines of 'To have Simon/Ice king regain his sanity'. This of course backfires into PB taking on the crown's madness herself and having their roles reversed. (This wish is the one I'm least confident in)

As for the Vampire World I think Marceline's wish might've been similar 'For Simon to have never lost his mind to the crown'. Instead of being raised by Simon and losing him to the crown Marcy is instead raised by the Vampire King and becomes almost opposite to who she is in the main Adventure Time world.

These wishes would have been made pre-finale of Adventure Time.

Why are these hypthetical wishes so Petrikov focused?

Because he's a huge part of both PB and Marcy's lives in two very different ways.

For Bonnie, the Ice king regularly kidnaps princesses and his wacky hijinks tend to cause havok in Ooo so fixing Simon would solve these problems. But instead she takes his place.

For Marceline it'd be about saving her adoptive dad from years trapped inside his mind, maybe even growing up without worrying about Simon putting on the crown and not turning back? But instead she never meets Simon at all.

Why Princess Bubblegum and Marceline? Why not another character?

Because they are so central to their respective worlds and the episodes they're featured in. They also lose a huge part of who they are in these worlds compared to the main universe.

Farmworld Finn becomes his own enemy, The Snow Man, his world's version of the Ice king. Meanwhile The Lich loses his purpose when all life is extinct in his wish world. Similarly PB becomes The Candy Queen, her world's version of the Ice King, and Marcy becomes a part of the vampires she devoted a large portion of her life to staking.

It would also link well with the B Story of the two episodes being centred around Gary and Marshall Lee; The Winter King's B Story centres around Gary pitching his idea to the Lemoncarbs. The Star's B plot focuses on Marshall Lee almost giving up his dreams for the sake of someone he loves.

This is of course all just speculation and headcannon and is subject to change as more information is released by the creators

[Another in my series of tributes to PCs past, this time moving on to Curse of the Crimson Throne. A game where I got a TPK in the final battle, which had never happened before and never happened again in my long history of running published adventures. Pro tip: do not teleport to the boss room without clearing the rest of the dungeon. Especially when said boss is a bard who can turn you against each other long enough for her minions from the rest of the dungeon to flood into the room. Theo technically survived, albeit dominated, which is part of why I picked him as the PC of choice. Also, as you'll see in the flavor text, Theo went through some shit (and was the first gay character that player made after coming out). So I wanted to finally give him a happy ending.

I ran Crimson Throne the first time around, in D&D 3.5. So mechanically, this version of Theo is quite different than that version. The original Theo was an archivist from Heroes of Horror (the divine class that tended to be most popular at my table), and for most of the game he had the necropolitian template and the Necrotic Cyst line of feats from Libris Mortis. I made him an oracle of Lore because a) he was very bookish and b) the same player played an oracle in both Jade Regent and Shattered Star. The lich oracle curse was used to reflect his time spent undead, and the inflict line of spells, plus various other necromancies, are standing in for the Necrotic Cyst spells.]

Theo Gravois CR 19 CN Humanoid This human has white hair, intense gray eyes and broad features. He wears chain mail and fine robes, and carries a staff, wands, books, and other magical paraphernalia.

Theo Gravois may simultaneously be the luckiest and unluckiest man alive. Theo was always interested in grisly crimes and tragic love stories, but didn’t expect to find himself in one. His fiancé, Ilya Kushnir, was murdered by the crime boss Gaedrin Lamm and fed to his pet alligator. All Theo had to remember his love by was Ilya’s severed hand, still wearing his engagement ring. Although Theo helped bring Lamm to justice, and then was embroiled in the chaos in Korvosa following the death of its king, he still dwelled on the injustice. Eventually, as his own body was wracked by tuberculosis and the city around him was gripped in the blood veil epidemic, Theo transformed himself into an undead creature in an attempt to cut off his grief and all emotions. The culmination of this ritual involved wrapping his love’s severed hand around his heart.

And then Ilya came back to life.

After months of adventures and just before fighting Queen Ileosa the Thrice-Damned herself, Theo and his colleagues were gifted with a Harrow Deck of Many Things. Theo drew the Unicorn, allowing him to undo any event in his past. Of course, he made it so Ilya never confronted Gaedren Lamm, which rippled through reality. Theo had a loving, living fiancé, so of course he never would have made himself undead. Just in time to fight Ileosa and lose. Because now that he was alive, he was vulnerable to her mind-altering magic.

Theo was the only survivor of the fight against Ileosa, and she kept him as a dominated pet until she could complete the ritual to grant herself divinity. The ritual failed by inches, as Theo had used stone shape spells to reshape half of the statues intended to focus the ritual into images of Blackjack, a Korvosan folk hero (the mantle of whom had been taken by no fewer than two of Theo’s close friends). Both Ileosa and Blackjack were transformed into powerful outsiders, Ileosa a devil, Blackjack an azata. And Ileosa, enraged, tortured Theo to death and left his body to rot in the dungeons beneath Castle Korvosa.

And then Ilya had him brought back to life.

Queen Croft of New Korvosa offered Theo his pick of any role in her city he wanted, but Theo refused—Theo distrusted authority before his many woeful experiences, and he is understandably somewhat paranoid about queens. Theo and Ilya now live on a small island in the Ironbound Archipelago, being perfectly happy to be alone together. Theo spends most of his days reading, sculpting, and playing games with his husband. It would take world-shaking events to bring Theo out of retirement. But if there’s one thing Golarion is known for, it’s world-shaking events.

i think one of the craziest things about fionna and cake is that they’ve just. decided to introduce magic into the world. because they want it like that. that means they’re forcing the terrible historical events (the mushroom war which in turn summons the lich into the world, because the war is the reason magic became part of the world to begin with) and some ruin some lives of people who seem decently satisfied with their lives (if we’re assuming ice queen has the same backstory as ice king…)

of course they don’t KNOW but at the same time there hasn’t been a single second where they’ve like discussed the possible consequences. Fionna doesn’t even think “hmm i wonder if my two bffs would be cool with this” because in the end it’s just her trying to fulfill her fantasy

YEAH LEGIT! im wondering exactly where the story is going bc the thing is we're still SEEING parts of the fionna and cake universe unfold. just last episode we saw marshall and gumball's date and how theyre getting closer now... thinking about how their new lives might be erased also feels wrong, even if you take into account that their old lives were ALSO erased. do they want that? would they prefer to live happily NOW? but they were ALREADY robbed of their lives once is the thing so is giving that back to them wrong? is letting them live in the dark feeling something missing really okay to continue this peace?

I can certainly see it ending in either direction, or maybe in somesort of halfway point. but i think ultimately the important part isnt what happens to the universe but how its done. bc it has to be in tandem with fionna's character arc, which seems to be about becoming less selfish, especially where her fantasy is concerned. why shes like that makes sense, because her life was robbed from her, but does that give her the right to do that to others? she has to consider the ramifications of this action. i wonder how exactly itll be done...

farmworld would actually be better off in the wizard married reality AT FIRST, in that their state of tech wouldnt be set so far back. theyre still fucked up by the war, but better off. simon still dies stopping the bomb that creates the lich. betty dies shortly after by expending an obscene amount of magic stopping the ice age the crown attempts to unleash in response to simons death. that being said, the way she stops it is by sealing it in with simons corpse, so when farmworld finn attempts to take the crown…. yeah.

Ask meme can I get a uhhhh Necromancy Thing 3 please.

this is one of those things where a short story idea blooms into a novel idea, and then you gently drop it because you're not really interested in writing that novel, but also, it haunts you as a Cool Premise, and maybe you thought about the magic system so much that you made a chart to explain it when you should've been taking notes in a staff meeting.

Worldbuilding premise is: magic is the manipulation of spirits living or dead, so it's basically just necromancy or what amounts to mind control...or some help with emergency healing, if you need to keep someone alive long enough to sew them up. (Or, rarely, manipulation of non-sentient living things or even inanimate objects, which teeechnically have spirits as well, but that takes so much power that it's basically impossible.)

Plot premise is: a new "witch" (wise woman/healer) has moved into the hut in the woods near Teen Main Character's rural town. TMC either figures out that she's secretly a necromancer or just that she's more interesting than anyone else here and begs an apprenticeship...but before she can start, royal soldiers come to arrest the witch, or at least to take her back to the capital city, because she is a) definitely a necromancer, in fact, supposed to be the Royal Necromancer ie royal healer and emergency military resource but we don't admit that, and also she's a princess, younger sister of the crown prince.

And! Tensions are high in this country for some reason, and the soldiers are dicks, and there's the start of a fight between the locals and the soldiers and TMC is killed!...very briefly. Because Princess-Witch/Necromancer brings her back before anyone can notice! And then is like, "Fine, I'll go, but I'm bringing my apprentice" (and to TMC: "You have to stay close to me or I can't keep you bound to your body.") (Her body is dead, this magic system doesn't do full resurrection. But it won't rot or anything while her spirit is tied to it.)

Partly the princess did this out of "this was my fault" guilt, and mostly she did it out of ruthless practical "I ran away for good reason (notably: my brother is a dick) but if this Nice Young Woman dies it could spark serious civil unrest and I don't want that."

So now TMC gets to have all the adventure she dreamed of (except maybe not this much of it), learning magic and dealing with deadly politics (except she's already dead and nobody must know) in the royal palace! By the way, "Royal Necromancer" is an old title but as of a few generations ago when this family defeated the previous ruler, a classic Evil Lich King, the Royal Necromancer in conjunction somehow with hte bearer of the crown is responsible for keeping subdued the giant army of skeletons which their great-great-grandparents didn't destroy so much as...weaken and bury. Possibly the crown prince wants to raise them and get conquesting? Which is why the princess ran away? Except, note, that didn't actually solve the problem even if she hadn't been found. Their mother the Queen is old and ill/dying, ofc.

By the end of the book, TMC can necromance well enough to keep her own spirit bound to her undying body, which technically speaking makes her a potentially-immortal lich. It's fine. Also, her less adventurous best friend from home showed up at some point with plans to rescue her from whatever she'd gotten herself into and they would've kissed but TMC is ace (with aceness exacerbated by being dead), so instead they just cuddled and defeated a giant skeleton army together. Idk what happened to the throne.

I wrote about 5 pages of a first chapter and then stopped. But man, now I'm looking at my erratically maintained list of original plot bunnies and feeling some itch... There are short stories here that I could probably write...

Shoutout to the multiple fantasy worlds, classic and modern, for which I have thorough magic system worldbuilding and the barest concept of a plot. I could do an ask meme about just those.

You didn’t smile back and cautiously took a step toward the table they sat at. 

King Lucian stood up and walked toward you. “The great queen, delighted to finally meet you.” He took your hand in his and kissed your knuckles. 

Your eyes narrowed as you watched him. “Why are you here?” You asked. 

“Can I simply not visit a kingdom to speak to their monarch?” Lucian answered. 

“Have you not spoken to my husband, already?” 

“I think we all know who the real monarch is.” 

You were silent as your eyes met his. 

“He was quite insistent on meeting you, my darling.” Marcus chimed in. 

“...Leave us.” You commanded. 

The servants and guards left the room. Now it was you, Lucian and Marcus. You glared at Marcus, “That includes you.” 

“Why? Should a husband not support his wife?” Marcus said. 

“A husband should also be faithful to his wife. Leave this room or you will be removed.” You warned. 

Marcus stood there for a minute and muttered under his breath. He stormed out of the room and the guards shut the doors. 

“You have grown to become quite the strong and beautiful queen.” Lucian gazed at you. 

“Flattery will get you nowhere.” You smirked slightly and moved to sit at the table. 

Lucian sat across from you and rolled up his right sleeve and rested his arm on the table to show the dragon’s mark. “I figured we could have a civil conversation amongst dragon masters.” 

Your eyes grew wide and your lips parted in awe. “When did you get your mark?” 

“A few years after we last met. During battle. That’s when I found my dragon.” He rolled down his sleeve and leaned back in the chair. 

“You did not tell me.” 

“I didn’t believe it myself.” 

“Is this why you are here, to tell me you are a dragon master?” 

“No, my queen, I have come to speak to you about an alliance. Whispers are heard throughout the land of a dark creature assembling an army. They had consumed and overtaken the entire land of Naldian. There were no survivors...” Lucian said solemnly. 

“This...creature...Is known as the Lich King.” 

Lucian looked at you in shock, “So you have seen it?” 

“Seen and fought.” 

“And you triumphed without a scratch?” 

“Because it allowed me. It wanted to test my strength...I barely made it out alive were it not for my dragon.” 

“I witnessed it’s minions tearing the knights of Naldian apart and left before it consumed my men.” 

“Fortunate that you made it out alive.” 

“As are you.” 

You felt your cheeks heat up at how soft his gaze was. You cleared your throat and stood up, “We should go to the war room and meet with my general. Form a plan to investigate these creatures so that we can better attack the enemy.” 

Lucian stood in front of you and gently cupped your cheek. 

You gasp softly, “Lucian...” 

“I am glad you are okay.” He whispered, leaning his face close to you.

“Lucian...Need I remind you I have a husband?” 

“No reminder needed, but word spreads of your husband’s infidelity.” Lucian stroked your cheek.

“You shouldn’t listen to gossip.” 

“I can’t help to when I hear your name. Besides it’s not gossip if you just confirmed it.” Lucian smirked. 

“You clever bastard...” You grinned. 

“May I lay my lips upon thine?” 

Your heart skipped a beat and you felt him moving in closer. “What would my husband say?” You said softly. 

“If he’s smart, which he clearly isn’t, he will stay silent.” Lucian finally pressed his lips against yours.

An origin story

In a time unknown there were two siblings. The older of the two was from an undamaged egg and was stronger. She only grew stronger as the last egg containing her sibling was being hunted mercilessly by salmon.

Since Lizzie and Jimmy hatched they’d be either fighting or running. They weren’t strong enough to do anything else. But they found slight joys, playing hide-and-go-seek among the grand coral reef they called home, Jimmy was always the best at the game making it his mission to find the most ridiculous hiding spots. His favourite was the time he found a coral grove and played with dolphins until a panicked Lizzie finally found him. “Jimmy! Thank the tide I was so worried. Don’t do that again.” Lizzie said, She stormed off to her room. Jimmy made his first bracelet that day. Made with kelp and coral charms he slid it under her door. She never took it off after that.

Jimmy had nearly lost an eye in the latest attempt on their life. An eye! Looking at her baby brother Lizzie began to pack all her belongings. “We’re not safe here anymore Cod-boy, we need to go to deeper waters.” Lizzie explained softly. The deep ocean was dark and fridged, they made a home in an abandoned ship wreck in the bottom of an indent. Jimmy detested the place his young mind not entirely understanding why they had to leave. “If the reef is over run why didn’t we go to the surface? There’d be no salmon up there!” He pouted, rubbing his icy tail. Lizzie sighed and tried to block out the complaints.

Somehow the red fish had found their hide out and under Jimmy’s panicked yells Lizzie heard the salmons hissing hunting noises. “Jimmy! Come here!” She grabbed his hand and with her stronger tail launched them both to the surface. The surface world was storming and choppy as they were tossed to and fro. Sometime in that storm she lost her grip on her little brother. “Jimmy!” She screamed. There was no response from anywhere around her. She screamed herself hoarse but still no response from Jimmy.

The royal guards found a girl washed up on the banks of Mezalea, she was battered and bruised with scars tracking up her legs. Young prince Joel watched the girl as she slept fitfully until his mother dragged him away, talking about how a flower will bloom no quicker if you stare at it. When the Girl woke Prince Joel was the first besides the healers to greet her. “My name’s Lizzie, I-I dunno where I’m from.” She shrugged, speaking formal and accented common.

A fisherman and his wife with too many mouths to feed found the little boy bumping against their dock. The small swamp land that the family occupied beared little fish except small boney things. “This is nonsense Elieen! Why don’t we just send the boy to Mythland!” The fisherman said as the wife set the boy down in their barn. “He needs help now Matthias! And I Mythland will not cherish this boy.” Elieen said her magics thrumming as she looked over the boy. “Fine but he’s being put to work as soon as he’s strong enough.” Matthias grouched.

- Years later-

a woman set out to find out the reason for the tugging in her soul. She left behind her dear friend, King Joel of Mezalea, the teen king well known for his clever royal advisor, Elizabeth.

A man stayed in the swamp building homes and schools for his little nation. The family who took him in left to bring their youngest daughter, Liche, to the Crystal Cliffs. They were all found dead one day out from The Cod Lands, bandits.

The woman raised platforms from the sea floor, and one day her king came sailing over the horizon waving a letter. It was inviting Joel and his advisors to a meeting amongst empires. “Joel, I’m only going as an emissary from the Ocean Empire.” She said firmly. “Of course.” Joel said bowing. “As Queen Elizabeth of the Ocean.” “Mistress of the Waves, Guardian of Axolotls.” Lizzie said absentmindedly going over blueprints. “Obviously.” Joel said waving and heading back to his boat.

As the man approached the meeting sight he realized with a sinking heart he got the day wrong. Ah well, turning on his heel he returned home. He’d have plenty enough chances to meet his fellows. But as he got home he realized how soon it would be. Sitting on his porch was a woman with striking pink hair. “Hello! I’m Lizzie, Queen of the Ocean empire!” She said holding out a hand. “Oh um The Codfather, my friends call me Jimmy. And I’m sorry have we met before?” Jimmy asked. “I don’t think so… you seem familiar but…” Queen Lizzie trailed off. “Not?” She offered after a pause.
