ok I've been considering getting one! What is your experience so far?

I freaked out that I had made a mistake for exactly the first night lol because there is definitely a learning curve to owning one but now I am in love. Mine is used and over 5 years old and I am also living creatively as my apartment/parking situation doesn't let me charge at home so if you are able to buy newer and also plug in where you live your life will be even easier.

The main thing is that the range readings are never accurate and you have to learn how to drive with battery preservation in mind. My EV seems tuned to run spectacularly at the most common surface street speed limit (35MPH), and the faster I go beyond that the faster the remaining range drops. This is what got me the first night because speeding home after buying it killed like 50% of my charge in 15 miles lmao. But slowing down and learning to take advantage of the car's recharge function when I'm braking (I think this is common to EVs?), I can go the same distance to work now and only use half the number of "miles" in battery power. I am determined to get a good grade in gaming my range so for me this aspect was fun but for someone else it might be annoying idk

Also make sure your insurance company will insure a car that posh beforehand; apparently refusing to insure cars they deem "too likely to get stolen" is a thing (somehow my Seattle ass did not know this whoops)

In another break from the usual programming... As a retired machine learning scientist, I wanted to share a few thoughts about future AI developments, since there's a lot of vague concern right now. Here are what I see to be the main issues.

AI is derivative. It's good at copying but a) lacks all originality (other than that occasional fluke maybe) and b) lacks human values, imparting a certain chill.

It may for example get good at producing pulp fiction, and you may mindlessly consume it in large quantities one day, but it won't make you feel good. We won't see ourselves deeply reflected in this content. It won't encourage intelligence and sensitivity.

We've seen already that industry will try to use it to replace decision workers, such as in filtering hate speech from your social media, or rating your job application, but that it will show no interest in edge cases, feeding into a society that's as derivative and hostile to difference as it is itself. We may start to develop weird mannerisms to get past these flawed gatekeepers. There may be pointless bubbles, e.g. if the AI randomly likes certain postcodes so house prices rise there.

It will get better and better at not making mistakes, such as driving your car off the road, but will never really understand that hitting a child is worse than hitting the central reservation. It may even get better at protecting life that you, as a driver, already are, but it won't generalise human values to novel situations. It may well be a greater danger to the life of non-European children. It will be safer if you don't have anything very unusual near the road, or change anything.

AI will become a major race issue at some point.

On the plus side, one day your cataract operation, for example, will be done perfectly virtually every time, and cheaper. I do think we'll be safer, and faster, on the road. We will extend uniformity of outcome into more complex, resistant areas. Safety is a domain where the target outcome is clear, and AI is ultimately suited. There will likely be inroads into much more complex manufacturing and automation. There will be job loss.

There is vast potential for flooding the internet with misleading content. Spam on steroids. Good content will be drowned. It might kill the internet as we know it. This is the decline of a golden age of trying to say something helpful on the internet, and one or two people possibly reading it. The internet is about to become a terrific weed patch.

People are making a valid living producing fairly derivative creative output, for example much high street fashion design, or domestic architecture, and there's nothing wrong with that. AI could move into that space. This kind of "everyday art" will get a little bit cheaper and a little bit less human, and that will be sad.

Companies will certainly try to sell you an AI of various kinds, but here it helps to remember that the word "intelligence" is part of the hype. It will be cleverly presented to keep you entertained. It will be good for some things and bad for others, like previous software, whilst even easier to anthropomorphise. Have fun, if you're into it.

Have you ever made a flask, canteen, or other liquid holder? The tutorials on YouTube all seem to do similar things but the final products are always very rough or sloppy, which makes me question the workmanship. As my go-to for quality armor tutorials, I was just wondering if you had ever made something like that and if so did you deviate from: Cut, glue?, stitch, stretch, beeswax, plug.

I have not, but you inspired me to go watch some and weigh in on them. :D

This was the top result when I searched "make a leather flask," and unless I'm missing something, I'd say the workmanship on this is pretty solid. Some of the other videos have sloppy stitching and sloppy edges, but this guy takes the steps to mitigate those problems, namely by:

- Using a stitching groover to put channels in the leather before stitching, because that helps the thread stay in a tidy line. And bonus pro-tip: making sure that each stitch is angled the same direction. (Which, hm, isn't a very good explanation if you don't already know what I'm talking about. Perhaps I should do a long post on stitching.)

- Using contact cement to anchor the edges, followed by pounding/pressing them together tightly, followed by sanding the edges flat and then beveling them. I may not have done this for flasks before, but it's the same process as finishing the edges on a welted knife sheath:

You line the edges up as best you can while glueing, and then sand them down so that all the layers form one seamless edge. For knife sheaths, a belt sander is ideal, but I don't have one of those, so I tend to use a dremel with a sanding drum. It's the same as sanding by hand, just faster. So yeah, definitely glue.

Other miscellaneous thoughts:

I wouldn't tape the pattern to the leather; I don't know why he felt the need to do that, it isn't hard to keep the pattern in position while you're tracing. Even scotch tape and masking tape will fuck up the surface of the leather when you pull it off. Also, since he's going to be dyeing and beveling the edges anyway, I would have marked the pattern with a fine-point brown sharpie instead of an awl, it gives you more control.

He mentions in the video that some people use a drill press to make the stitching holes, and advises against it, but sometimes it's kind of unavoidable -- not on this flask project, because he's only punching through two layers of 9 oz leather, but when you're making welted knife sheathes, sometimes you're working with up to four or even five layers, and it's literally too thick for a diamond punch. (...Yeah I definitely have a lot to say about stitching.)

Ridiculous layers:

I would not have used the Eco-Flo Pro Waterstain that he does; that stuff is garbage, and does create the waxy barrier that he mentions causing problems when it comes time to soak the flask before wet-molding. Just use an alcohol-based dye, Fiebings or Angelus, you'll be doing yourself a favor.

Using corn kernels to get the shape is leaving some textured indentations in the wet leather; that could be avoided by using something smaller and smoother, like sand. Though the tradeoff of potentially winding up with sand in your finished water jug might not be worth it.

You could probably cut your beeswax with paraffin wax, which is cheaper and also easier to work with, in my experience. (Beeswax is REALLY sticky.) Or what I use, which is jeweler's casting wax, because it has a higher melting point (~170 F) than beeswax or paraffin (~140 F and ~120 F, respectively). This makes your armor less likely to go soft even if it gets left in a hot car, though I'd have to check the material sheet to make sure it's non-toxic before using it on a drinking bottle.

He could have made the edges more polished by hitting it with an edge burnisher during the waxing stage.

But yeah, on the whole I'd say that's a really excellent tutorial (makes me want to go make a flask of my own, hah), and even the things I'd do differently are mostly just a matter of personal preference.

what a month. january is already a rough time. throwing in a pandemic, a coup, and an economic revolution spearheaded by reddit just seems unfair. as for me personally, the spring semester came at me fast and even though it’s only week 2, i am already buried in grading. which i realize is my fault, considering i’m the one who assigned homework.

so after hearing your feedback, i thought i’d make this newsletter even more writing-related by writing more about writing. this month i’ll start off by talking about the nature of reality in fiction in a segment i call “been thinkin a lot about.” more on that below.

i’ve compiled a folder of PDFs of the short stories i teach most often, which is to say, the stories i like enough to re-read every semester. most of them are literary fiction but a few veer into fantasy, sci fi, and horror.

i know before the MFA, i didn’t really know what a short story was. like i knew, abstractly, the concept of a short story (it is as it sounds), but i could only list a couple i’d ever read as an adult, and i hadn’t read anything that had been published in the last decade. i remember wondering why i was even being asked to care about short stories. who writes short stories? who reads them? apparently, a lot of people. short storyists are a lot like fanwriters in that they make no money and when you talk about your writing in public, people give you that “why would anyone waste their time with that?” look.

so here’s why i was asked to care about short stories: a good short story gives you the entirety of a world in a very condensed space. moreover, it can sometimes leave you as satisfied as a novel in a fraction of the reading time. all the stories i’ve compiled here are ones that stuck with me, that i find myself recommending over and over to writers who want a good example of developing character, or weird narration, or establishing stakes.

if you’re a writer considering publication or an MFA in creative writing, i highly recommend familiarizing yourself with short stories, if for no other reason than to get the feel for them so you can write some of your own. if you can get a few short story publications under your belt, it’ll be easier to open doors when you’re ready to query agents for a novel. also, short stories make a great writing sample for grad programs, workshops, fellowships, residencies, and grant funding.

if you want to check out more short stories but have no idea where to start, the 2020 best american short stories just dropped in november, or if you want a cheaper one, used copies of 2019 and earlier are available on thriftbooks. if you want an overview of the history of the (american) short story, there’s also the best american short stories of the century. fair warning, though, while it’s more diverse than expected, it’s still a bit heavy on dead-white-dude writing.

stuff i’m into rn

i’m about halfway through the rhetoric of fiction by wayne c. booth which has more or less become my narrative bible. it’s a little dated (1961) but it tackles banal writing adages that are somehow still believed, like “show don’t tell” and whatnot, and breaks them down with amazing insight, clarity, and research. it’s a bit of a dense text so i’m only reading a few pages a day, i think the first time i’ve ever let myself read something so intentionally slowly. now i’m kind of obsessed with doing things slowly. reading slowly, writing slowly, cooking slowly. i even drive slowly, because it’s so rare to go anywhere at all, and i want to enjoy it. also, it’s very snowy where i am. also also, the battery died in my car this month and i really have to make it a point to drive more often.

compulsory reality in fiction. many of us have probably received feedback along the lines of, or thought to ourselves as we read, “that’s not realistic.” many of us believe, consciously or not, that fiction that is more “realistic” is inherently better than fiction that is less “realistic.” for some of us, real means a saturation of details, the clear depiction of the surfaces of things. reality is found in the rendering thereof; if you can “see” it, it’s real. for others of us, it might be the development of complex characters and their growth across a narrative. and for yet others, reality is subtlety, or misery, or the idea of “slice of life,” a term i don’t think means anything, because aren’t all stories a slice of a character’s life? what would a story that’s not a slice of life look like? you’d either have to take away the “slice” part and render a whole life, which is impossible, or you’d have to take away the “life” part and create a dead story, which may be possible, but why would you want to? even if you wrote a story about a rock, the rock would be brought to life by virtue of being written about.

anyway. i think the word “real” is a shitty word for the same reason “slice of life” is a shitty phrase: everything is real and therefore nothing cannot be real. slices of life are all we know because we are alive and cannot truly perceive not being alive; reality is also all we know, and any depictions beyond reality are thus made real because they have been depicted.

so the “goal” for fiction to be “realistic” seems to me to be a false one. all fiction is real because it exists and no fiction can be truly real because it’s only a facsimile of reality. not to get all “this is not a pipe” but writing is just making squiggles, and we as a community of English-knowers agree that certain squiggles correspond to certain sounds, and certain sounds together make words which conjure meanings. and words put together into sentences into paragraphs conjure even more complicated meanings. and when those paragraphs are woven into narrative we create yet more and more complicated meaning.

every time you write anything — a text message, an email, a tweet, a fanfic — you are taking the infinite abstraction of your own cognition, narrowing it into a single concept, and representing that concept with patterns in the form of sounds represented by letters and given meaning with words, so that the infinite abstraction of your own conscience can be fractionally witnessed by the infinite abstraction of someone else’s. and even though we can’t definitively prove for ourselves that any other thing possesses a consciousness, writing shows us the shape of someone else’s mind, and tells us we are not alone.

and yet we still expect writing to be “real.”

have you ever read a story where a character sneezed? like just, a description of a sneeze for the sake of it, with no purpose or function in the plot? if not, is it because our characters aren’t real enough to sneeze, or because the sneeze isn’t relevant to their plight? what would a written sneeze look like, and why would somebody want to write it? moreover, why would somebody want to read it? that leads me to wonder, do we depict reality in the service of narrative, or narrative in the service of reality? in other words, do we write to portray reality (sans sneezing), or do we depict reality to constrain our writing, the way one might request bumpers when bowling so as not to fall in the gutters?

i’ve never read an artful rendition of a character pissing or shitting, either, even when those things are related to a character’s plight and circumstance — stories involving long road trips, living in the woods, being kidnapped. the only exception i can think of is when those things are eroticized (we do not kinkshame here in this lkwrnl), the same way it’s rare to find detailed sex writing that isn’t for the purpose of reader arousal. are there just some things about the nature of being human that are too intimate, too complex, or too boring to write?

once i wrote a murder that takes place in a small fictional midwestern town in the 90s (for the ~aesthetic), and it went uninvestigated by said town’s police force. early readers repeatedly commented along the lines of, “that’s not realistic.” and i thought, no, if anything, the incompetence of police is too realistic for the heightened reality i’m trying to render. have you ever heard of a cop solving a murder that didn’t come with an obvious suspect or immediately found evidence? i haven’t. that doesn’t mean those cases don’t exist, but i definitely think they’re less likely than mass media has us believe, and the average small-town police force has far less motivation (and possibly training) to solve crimes than we think.

i started working on the above-mentioned novel in 2016, and my goal was to depict a reality that hovers above the surface of plausibility. in this novel, which is based on macbeth, a preteen girl, mercy, becomes jealous of the love her best friend elisa shows to her father. mercy decides to get her older and very unstable brother to kill him. naturally the deed goes awry, but it does occur, and the cleanup is far messier than anticipated.

is it plausible for a 12 year old girl to plot and execute the murder of her best friend’s father? no. is that what this book is about? yes. a book about a 12 year old girl who has a perfectly healthy relationship with her best friend and who has no feelings toward her bff’s father one way or another is probably far more “realistic,” but that’s not the book i’d want to read and certainly not the one i want to write. my goal of a heightened reality is what henry james calls the intensity of illusion, the thing that allows a reader, through the witness of one’s distilled cognition into language, to exit physical, knowable reality, and enter a new and unknown reality. and isn’t climbing to that higher place, that intensity of illusion, the purpose of fiction? if it’s not, what is?

the best feedback i got on the aforementioned murder scene was from one of my professors, who, of the perfect calm of all children involved, said, “they just shot a guy. at least one of them would be freaking out.”

he was totally right, but it opened up a lot of questions for me. by what standard did he reach that conclusion? was it something in the chapter itself, was it his personal understanding of the work of narrative, or was it the logical conclusion of the slim plausibility of the scenario? moreover, where did i come up with the idea that all of my preteen characters would commit a murder and proceed to be very chill about it? if an implausible scenario begs the expectation of emotional distress, would it be more compelling to buy into that expectation or deviate from it? is it even my obligation to be compelling when i can never have a cogent grasp of the personal tastes of my audience?

that brings me to what appears to be reality’s opposite: idealism, the state those of us who write fanfic are often trying to achieve. we’re working in an entire genre of ideals, of happily ever afters, of hurt that is always followed by comfort, of glossily rendered sex during which everyone orgasms and no one has to pee afterward. we fix broken texts and continue incomplete ones. sometimes, we want to make existing things better, deeper, more complicated. but all the time, we want to make a text more than what it is.

some see this process, this drive for the ideal, as antithetical to realism, and i think that’s part of the reason fanfiction and other idealistic genres (romance, etc.) get a bad name — the assumption that more real (which for some means more miserable) is better, and therefore its opposite, the ideal, is worse. for them, i have this quote from vladimir nabokov:

For me a work of fiction exists only insofar as it affords me what I shall bluntly call aesthetic bliss, that is a sense of being somehow, somewhere, connected with other states of being where art (curiosity, tenderness, kindness, ecstasy) is the norm.

the ideal, aesthetic bliss, the intensity of illusion. these are all phrases that boil down to the same thing: you the writer get to define the constraints of your own reality. you get to choose if your world even complies with the known laws of physics. and if it doesn’t, you get to choose which ones to break, and why to break them. you get to choose if your stories take place in a real house in a real town on a real day. if you wrote a story that takes place on september 11, 2001, would the events of that story be shaped by the events of that actual day, or are you writing a better world where 9/11 doesn’t happen? consider the consequences of both: why might you want to write reality? why might you want to write ideality? how do these things shape your identity and goals as a writer?

no matter where a work falls on the real-ideal spectrum, you have to accept that prose itself will only ever be a verisimilitude of reality and therefore an interpretation of it, one that might be interpreted differently by a reader. in writing and everything else, you can never have complete control over what others perceive. it’s like giving someone cash as a gift. they might buy themselves something nice with it, or they might spend it on groceries. the point is, eventually we all have to let go of our realities.

Chapter 3

James needed to plan everything perfectly. He had no idea where to begin, though. He'd spotted Howard a few times. His bodyguard had been close behind, always watching from behind large sunglasses and a hoodie. James wondered if that was done to be inconspicuous or if it was done to he so blatantly obvious, he should have glazed over it. Either way, it didn't work and James picked out the bodyguard near Howard instantly.

How was he supposed to make an attack on Howard when the man only went to public places and was driven around with his bodyguard in the car every time?

"James?"

"What?"

Natalia sat up straight, startled. "Are you okay?"

James looked up from his mutilated steak. "What?" he asked again, softer.

"I'm not being rude or anything, but the food usually has a bit more . . . kick. That, and you're usually very picky about presentation. I'm not complaining! I'm just . . . concerned."

James shook his head. "It . . . it's work. That's all."

"I thought you were an exterminator. Don't you just, like, point and shoot with that hose-pipe looking thing?"

James's mind wandered to his rifle. Hose-pipe looking thing. He laughed.

"James, are you sure you're okay?" Natalia reached over the table to feel his forehead for a fever.

He smiled. "I'm fine. And the extermination thing was a part-time job."

"Was?" Natalia asked, sitting back. "What happened?"

"Oh, I quit. I almost exterminated myself way too many times. I'm an assassin now."

He had no idea why he'd said that, but thankfully, Natalia took it as a joke. After all, which assassin would actually reveal that? Certainly not her.

"Very funny, James. But seriously, you seem tired. Maybe we should order something tomorrow? You can sleep in tomorrow morning as well, I know how to not poison myself."

Poison! James felt like an idea had hit him over the head so hard, he would fall out of his chair any moment.

Howard always visited the same café for a morning coffee. If James found grab a job there, he would have access to Howard's coffee. The idea was brilliant!

"James."

"Huh?"

"I know a psychologist on our floor. Do you want his number? He takes walk-ins at home on Saturdays."

James smiled. "I'm fine, Natalia. I promise."

The next morning, Natalia had left already, taping a note to her door. She knew it was the first thing James saw when he left his room.

Gone to work. Attempted waffles and instant porridge. Shitty iced coffee in the fridge. Good luck.

He was amused at her signing the note despite the fact that it could not have been written by anyone else. Having woken up in a good mood, James didn't even notice that she'd forgotten the sugar in the porridge and burnt the waffles, and that calling the drink a shitty iced coffee was an understatement.

He dressed well, making sure his titanium prosthetic was disguised properly, before locking up the apartment and leaving. He knew Hydra had an eye on him as soon as he was out in the open, but he knew they'd merely write his good mood off as a front to fit in with civilians. Hydra wasn't very big on having emotions. Ever.

They'd even sent an agent to the same apartment block. James had asked why he couldn't dump his weapons with the agent instead. He was told not to question orders.

Then they asked him why he picked an apartment that had someone else living in it. It had taken ever five of strength not to get sarcastic. Instead, he took two deel breaths and reminded Karpov that no one paid him money ever and the little bit they'd given him to survive meant that he had to get a cheap apartment. Nothing was cheaper than the small little space whose rent was split over two people.

He'd gotten a little snappy and said that if they wanted him away from civilians, they should pay for a better apartment. Hydra did not want to waste resources and so they reminded Karpov to keep James in check, periodically remind him that he was nothing more than a weapon.

Having now spent four consecutive weeks in the presence of other humans, James was ready to give Hydra the finger, but he also knew that when this was over, they would provide a bed and sustenance, however menial. If he left, he'd spend the rest of his life running and hiding. At least this way, he could be out in public and claim he was just appearing natural to strangers.

Hydra lapped up his lies with no questions. After all, why wouldn't you believe what your told when you're sure you've trained your pets well?

Whistling, James waltzed into the café right behind Howard and his bodyguard. He waited to see what Howard ordered and who made the drink.

"Your usual, Mr Stark?" the barista asked, offering the billionaire a smile.

"Uh, yes, Milo."

"You know I'm going to have to supervise, Milo."

The calm voice pierced James's brain and he froze. He stared at the counter.

"Yes, yes, of course. I remember. Come on through."

"Thank you, darling."

James stared in growing horror as the woman walked behind the counter and spoke softly and casually to Milo as the young boy fixed a drink for Howard. James could tell that she stood at an angle to both watch Milo and keep an eye on Milo.

He knew Howard Stark somehow managed to hire an assassin without even knowing, but how the hell did Howard Stark get dumped in the hands of the Black Widow?

James would know that voice anywhere. He had no idea how long ago it had been, but he knew he'd already failed against her once.

The Winter Soldier saw her, sprinting across rooftops as he ran in the street. The woman was after his target. He pushed faster, racing her now. If she got to the target first, the Red Room will have gained a prisoner with knowledge both organisations needed. He knew he had to get there first.

When he made it to the 'safe house', she was leaving with the target. Spitting violent curses, he jumped through the window she'd broken.

The Black Widow had the target protected deep within bundles of materials and stuffed into a sidecar of a cheap bike she'd stolen just for this. He swung through the beams of the weak building and perched on the roof. He took aim and fired.

He never missed. He knew that.

So when the shot missed her heart and caught her hip, he knew she had dodged the bullet.

And he knew she was a force to be reckoned with.

She radioed in to the chip Hydra had placed on the scientists. "How kind of you to bundle him all up like that for me, it really made kidnapping him off your hands a lot easier." She laughed as though she weren't in danger of bleeding out. "Thank you, darling!"

James suddenly realised Howard and his bodyguard had left. There was no way he would be able to slip even an extra spoon of sugar into Howard's coffee. Oh, how he hated that voice.

So light, so airy. So damn superior. He hated it. He hated that he could still hear her laughter. He felt like she was mocking him with that laugh. Mocking him for missing. But he knew that he had aimed right. She was the one skilled enough to dodge.

He loathed the Black Widow.

"Again, Anthony."

Anthony lay on the floor of the boxing ring, frustrated. "I'm never gonna get it!"

"Well, if you never get up, obviously."

"You are such an adult. Old lady."

"Hey, I'm only five years older than you, mister."

Anthony mocked her under his breath. Natalia nudged his arm with her foot. "Get up, Anthony," she said, "and if you're so  convinced I'm that much older than you, I expect you to start treating me with a little more respect. Your choice."

"So, what? My choices are switching you between best friend mode or aunt mode?"

Natalia shrugged. "The words came out of your mouth."

Anthony sighed as he sat up. He stretched an arm out for Natalia to grab. Barely straining, she pulled him up.

"What did you say your nickname was?"

"Tallie."

"Okay. Considering that you are an old lady--"

"I'm twenty-two, Anthony, I'm not--"

"-- I'm gonna start calling you Aunt Tal."

"Good lord," Peggy said as she walked in, "if Tallie is an old lady, I dread to think what I am."

"Ancient," Anthony responded instantly.

"Anthony!" Natalia scolded. She grinned when Anthony looked at her in pure surprise. "You chose aunt mode."

Peggy laughed. "Oh, very nice. I've got a teammate!"

Natalia laughed softly as she exited the ring. "What are you here for, Peggy? Does Howard want to go somewhere?"

"No, actually. He's staying in tonight. I understand that you're meant to always keep tabs on Howard, but am I right in assuming you ate allowed to do what you like once you leave the manor?"

Wiping her forehead with a towel, Natalia nodded. "Yeah, why?"

"Well, he can't leave the manor unless you're present, and we know he's safe in here. So this essentially means you're off the hook now?"

"Yeah," Natalia said slowly, waiting to see where this went.

"Well, we were wondering, that is, Ana and I, if you'd like to come with us dancing tonight. There's a little bar we frequent on weekends. Mr Jarvis often accompanies us, merely to escort us back once we've drunk enough to intoxicated several people. I know you're several years younger than both Ana and I, but--"

"I'd love to," Natalia said, smiling. She didn't tell Peggy that this would be her first time going out with friends. "I think it would be fun. It's about time I got to know Ana, anyway."

"Really?" Peggy asked, delighted. "You'll join us?"

"Absolutely!"

"Splendid! You can wear something of Ana's, unless you'd like to go home to change?"

Natalia thought about the apartment, a good eight minute drive away. "I'll wear something of Ana's. Are you sure she won't mind?"

"Mind? She's making a new friend. She's going to be thrilled!"

Excited, Peggy grabbed Natalia's hand and dragged her through the manor, through the courtyard and into the Jarvis household that stood comfortably on the other side of the property.

Anthony stared up at the ceiling. "Wow," he murmured to himself.

Natalia laughed so hard she snorted. Embarrassed, she tried to hide her face. Peggy was so amused with Natalia, she almost fell off her chair. Ana Jarvis watched the pair with slight amusement. "You think I'm joking, but Edwin never lies about his tales with Howard."

"Unbelievable!" Peggy cried. "There's no way Howard sat on a whoopee cushion four times in one hour."

Ana shrugged. "Peg, you know Anthony. He always gets his way. Besides, Edwin helped him."

Natalia took a sip of her drink. "Is there footage of this?"

Ana shook her head. "Howard had it deleted."

"I'm sure I can recover it," Natalia said. "How long ago was this?"

"Hmm, I think about two or three nights ago? Edwin says it was long after you'd both left."

"Oh, I would love to see it," Peggy said, "do call me if you get it right."

"Of course."

The three of then fell silent, each trying to picture Howard's face every time he sat down on the damned things.

"Tallie," Ana said after a while.

"Hm?"

"Peg and I aren't young any longer, but you still are."

"Yeah, so?"

"I'll give you five dollars if you go over there and say hi to the tall one at the bar."

Peggy glanced over her shoulder. "I'll give you an extra five if you come back with his number."

Natalia's jaw dropped. "What? No! That's silly!"

"Another five if you get him to dance with you," Ana cut in, scowling at Peggy.

"Wait! This is--"

"Total twenty if you ask him on a date," Peggy said, shooting Ana a smirk.

The two elderly women held each others stare for a moment before simultaneously pushing Natalia off her chair and in the direction of the bar. Resisting the urge to flip them both off, Natalia straightened Ana's blood red dress and walked with her head held high. She could manipulate some random guy into one date, right?

She glanced back to her table and gestured to a blond man ordering a drink. Both Peggy and Ana shook their heads fiercely and motioned for her to move on. There was only one more person at the bar if she continued in that direction, so she assumed they must mean the lone brunet.

Cautiously, she took a seat next to him and prepared her opening lines.

"Work end early?"

Natalia frowned. "James? What -- are you okay?"

James shrugged and lifted his head from his hand. "Bad day. You?"

Natalia shrugged. "Okay day. Good evening. I'm out with friends. I should've called--"

"No," James said, waving her apologies aside, "you don't have to. I don't need to know your every move. Anyway, if you didn't recognise me, why'd you come sit down?"

Natalia smiled. "Well, my friends are being super childish and if you agree to go on a date with me, I'll split the twenty dollars I'll be getting with you."

James thought about it. "Ten bucks for a date? Sounds fun, let's do it."

Natalia passed him her phone. "Act like you're giving me your number."

"You're having fun, aren't you?"

"Totally. I was worried about getting an idiot attached to me, but this is so much better. Imagine the lies I could tell. You'd back them up, obviously, right?"

"Every one. I'll be extra convincing if more money is involved," he added, grinning as he passed Natalia her phone back.

"Very funny, James. Listen, if you're not feeling great, I can come home with you . . . that sounded bad, given the charade I've just started. You know what I mean."

"I know, Natalia, and I promise you I'm fine. You enjoy yourself. I'll be fine."

"Okay," Natalia eventually said, sliding off the bar stool. "Take care of yourself, James."

Peggy and Ana were stunned and refused to give Natalia the full twenty dollars until she actually went on her date, claiming that she never actually danced with the handsome stranger.

Persona 5 Royal Import guide

I realized the past week some people who might be interested in buying P5R but dunno how or didn’t know they can play the JPN ver on their non-JPN PS4. So I thought I’d help make a guide as to how to buy it and make a JPN account. That being said the game WILL be in Japanese but if you don’t mind playing it you should be good (trust me P5 OG isn’t that bad of a game to play with a language barrier imo, as long as P5R doesn’t do anything SUPER crazy with like a puzzle or something I think it’ll be about the same experience). But yeah for those of you who want to play the game despite it being in Japanese but didn’t now how to, this guide is for you!

For the most part this is to get you the game in the cheapest and fastest fashion, or at least a good starting place for you to look.

Tbh I found Amazon.jp to be the fastest and most affordable (and easy to navigate) for physical editions. Usually comes within 2-3 days, shipping is usually just $10 (but again, pretty fast shipping). I used to do Play-Asia (recommended if you are trying to hunt down a certain edition), but they do bloat their prices and take MUUUUUUCH longer. BUT I do recommend their services if you are just purchasing foreign DLC cards (because you get the code for that pretty quickly, like within minutes via your account and/or emailed to you). 

Anyway with this being said, I’ll start with the digital and then a guide to buying it physical (from Amazon Japan, you can try other places but I figured I’d give you a quote on one place and you can branch out from there). 

Buying Digital:

But let’s start with the fastest and cheapest way and that’s digital only. All you need is a PS4 and a 2nd email address. Next you want to make a JPN account, videos down below for a step by step guide (first video is a really fast step by step, the 2nd video is a bit more slowed down step by step in case that’s more your speed):

Keep in mind you can change your language it English or any language you want on your Japanese PSN (link to how to change). But I recommend having it on Japanese when you go to buy the game (because you’ll need to type in Japanese, esp if it’s not on the feature page, but if you set your keyboard to english ya gonna have a bad time ;w;). 

So anyway we’re gonna just check to see how much it is on the PSN (with tax), btw you wanna type “ ペルソナ“. Or to make it easier (cause typing it can be a bit funky on the PS4 if you don’t know what you’re doing), you can also sign in via your computer and here’s the links to both (note you can’t be signed into your non-JPN account to view these, you need to sign out and/or sign into the JPN account you just made). 

Reg Edition (¥ 9,680) and Digital Deluxe ( ¥ 12,980)

From the looks of it, it seems that there will also be a separate deluxe DLC available on Oct 31 for those who didn’t preorder the Digital Deluxe to begin with. Anyway, preorder bonus for both is a special Mona sticker. As for what’s in the Digital Deluxe/Deluxe DLC I’mma just copy and past googletranslate cause it’s not that inaccurate:

Well at least this DLC is new/different. 8U Anyway pick your poison, you can always get the deluxe kit DLC later and get the base game now. 

After this you’ll need money, and you can’t use your debit/credit card if it’s not Japanese. Soooooo that means you need to buy foreign currency, and one of the best places I go to is Play-Asia (I’m sure you can do this with Amazon Japan too but Play-Asia I know how it works and yeah 8U). They don’t gouge the prices, and after the payments gone through they email it/post it on your account. Anyway get what you need, and....low-key I didn’t.....see....any tax when I went to put this through....So I guess what we see is what we get in price. But sadly Japan’s price in games are a bit more steep, so you’ll probs have to get the ¥10,000 at least (unless you are getting the Deluxe edition). But now you know how to buy the game digitally as well as obtain any DLC you want (and there might be some free DLC, there were for P5 OG so yeah keep an eye out)

Buying Physical:

Now let’s look at Physical. Now you can buy from Play-Asia if you want, they have the Royal Flush edition if you want. I don’t recommend it unless you don’t mind either paying even more shipping wise or waiting about a half a month. Cause they are sloooooooow and their prices are a little more than Amazon.JP imo. 

Personally I’m gonna go with Amazon.Jp, you’ll also get a preorder bonus if you buy the Amazon version but that’s the ¥ 9,680. There are a few versions still available on there, and maybe you want the special FamtisuXD one (your best bet is probably ebay at this point). But I want to try and find you guys the most convenient and/or cheapest one. So instead I’m gonna point you in the direction of the  ¥7,989 edition (note: you can still view the other editions on that website, if you want the preorder bonus or just a different version then more power to you! just wanted to focus on the cheapest option because it’s not the most talked about one). It has a price cut for whatever reason, and that will cover the cost of shipping tbh. When I went to check out it comes out to $81.51 with shipping (the digital is about $90.31, but you have to spend whatever the Play-Asia card is so you technically have to spend $100ish). And it arrives about 2-4 (usually 2-3 in my experience) days, so it has a better price than Play-Asia and is also faster for cheaper. 

Now it’s possible you can find some e-cards cheaper somewhere else (I encourage to go looking) or even physical copies somewhere else, this is just a how-to guide to help you get started. As for if you should go with Digital or Physical it’s up to you. Wanna play it ASAP (and have some money kinda set aside for possible DLC)? Then go Digital. Don’t mind waiting a few days and want a case for your wall? Then go physical.

Every year, I look for important themes in sustainability that will have lasting impact on society, from glaring evidence of global megatrends to inspiring stories of corporate action. The year 2018 brought extreme change — in weather and environmental ecosystems, in political winds and power, and in the expectations of business. It also brought incredible clarity about the scale of our challenges and opportunities.

So let’s start with the big picture before moving to some corporate success stories.

The world’s scientists sound a final alarm on climate

We have about 12 years left. That’s the clear message from a monumental studyfrom the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). To avoid some of the most devastating impacts of climate change, the world must slash carbon emissions by 45% by 2030, and completely decarbonize by 2050 (while, in the meantime, emissions are still rising).

The IPCC looked at the difference between the world “only” warming two degrees Celsius (3.8°F) — the agreed upon goal at global climate summits in Copenhagen and Paris — or holding warming to just 1.5 degrees. Even the latter, they say, will require a monumental effort “unprecedented in terms of scale.” We face serious problems either way, but every half degree matters a great deal in human, planetary, and economic losses.

It wasn’t just the IPCC that told a stark story. Thirteen U.S. government agencies issued the U.S. National Climate Assessment, which concluded that climate change could knock at least 10% off of GDP. Other studies tell us that sea level rise is going to be worse than we thought, Antarctica is melting three times faster than a decade ago, and Greenland is losing ice quickly as well. If both those ice sheets go, sea level rise could reach 200-plus feet, resulting in utter devastation, including the loss of the entire Atlantic seaboard (Boston, New York, D.C., etc.), all of Florida, London, Stockholm, Denmark, Uruguay and Paraguay, and land now inhabited by more than 1 billion Asians.

All of this suggests that business must dramatically change how it operates: companies will need to push well past their comfort zones from areas like politics and policy to engaging consumers to how they make investment decisions.

Entire towns are wiped off the map by extreme weather

This year the weather devastation around the world got, in the words of one colleague, “biblical.” The town of Paradise, California, was effectively eliminated by wildfires (that, yes, are made worse by climate change), killing at least 85 people. Most houses in Mexico Beach, Florida, were destroyed by Hurricane Michael. Unprecedented rains and damage from Hurricane Florence slammed North Carolina and temporarily turned a major highway into a river. Typhoon Mangkhut ravagedthe Philippines and parts of China, killing dozens of people. Incredible heat blanketed four continents this summer, with records falling across Europe and Asia. Venezuela’s last glacier is disappearing. Finally, Capetown, South Africa, is essentially out of water due in part to drought — the city nearly shut off all the taps this year, but has held off “Day Zero” through ongoing restrictions and aggressive citizen action.

The consequences of these extremes are not theoretical. What is the economic cost to an area with no water, or one that’s under water, or burned to the ground? In the U.S. alone, it was $306 billion in 2017, shattering records.

Coral is dying, insects are disappearing, and the fate of major ecosystems looks dim

The world’s top coral expert confirms that at 2 degrees of warming, all coral will die. This will destroy a critical part of an ocean system that provides protein to hundreds of millions of people, helps blunt coastal storm surges, and supports the livelihoods of people working in fishing and tourism.

And it’s not just coral: there’s the death of pacific kelp forests, radical declines in insect populations, and continuing population drops in all mammals and bees.

How does this all connect to business? For some sectors, it’s obvious: the food and agriculture industry will have trouble feeding us without pollinators, and tourism takes a big hit without coral and other wildlife. But more broadly, society will not thrive in a world where entire pillars of planetary support are collapsing. And if society can’t thrive, neither can business.

The U.S. environmental protection system continues being dismantled … from within

The EPA and Department of Interior are reversing years of protections for air, water, and land. In 2018, the Trump administration has opened up offshore waters and rolled back safety rules for drilling, greatly weakened the voice of science in policy, reduced focus on children’s health, and moved to make it easier to build dirty coal plants.

The big question now is whether businesses will push back and go down a cleaner path on their own. It’s easy to see why multinationals might as they face pressure from sub-national regions — California Gov. Jerry Brown held a Global Climate Action Summit which produced many aggressive climate goals from cities and state, for example. Gov. Brown also signed aggressive new laws committing to carbon-free electricity statewide by 2045 and requiring solar on all new homes. So even if U.S. action sputters, governors and mayors who influence local and regional business conditions will be pushing the clean economy and pro-climate agendas.

In pointed contrast to the U.S., the EU backed a proposal to strike no new trade deals with countries not in the Paris climate accord (i.e., only the U.S.), France will shut coal plants by 2021, India just cancelled plans for big coal plants, and China banned 500 inefficient models of cars.

A prominent leader retires, but new leaders step up

For nearly a decade, no business leader has done more to bring sustainability into the business mainstream than Paul Polman, Unilever’s outgoing CEO (Full disclosure: I’ve worked with Unilever). His depth of understanding of our biggest global, social, and environmental challenges, and his commitment to use business as a way to tackle them, has been unparalleled. But it wasn’t just talk. The company also grew throughout Polman’s tenure and the stock outperformed peers and the FTSE index. Luckily, there are other corporate leaders who are stepping up, including Danone’s Emmanuel Faber (see below for more).

But climate isn’t the only area where we’re seeing bold stances. Societal issues more broadly made headlines, too. The New York Times declared 2018 year that “CEO activism has become the new normal,” with prominent voices like Salesforce’s Marc Benioff leading the way. Other notable moments include Nike making Colin Kaepernick — the man who led NFL player protests about police violence against African Americans — the face of its 30th anniversary “Just Do It” campaign (sales rose quickly). Under pressure from survivors of school mass shootings, Dick’s Sporting Goods stopped selling assault weapons, and other companies cut ties to the powerful National Rifle Association. Kroger celebrated a year of its “End Hunger” initiative. Unilever threatened to pull its substantial ad dollars from Facebook and Google if they didn’t police “fake news and toxic content.” One hundred U.S. CEOs urged action on controversial immigration issues. And more than 100 U.S. companies gave employees time off to vote.

Danone North America becomes the world’s largest B Corporation

A “B Corp” certification requires answering an intensive set of questions on environmental, social, and governance issues. But most importantly, it commits a company to create value for all stakeholders (customers, employees, communities, and so on), not just shareholders.

French consumer products giant Danone has now put 30% of its brands and businesses through the certification process and says that “companies are fundamentally challenged as to whose interests they really serve.” Becoming a B Corp is arguably is a direct statement about whose interests it values most, and it’s and fascinating frontal attack on the dominance of shareholder capitalism.

More investors are viewing climate and sustainability as core value issues

Something is shifting in finance. Vanguard wants CEOs to be a force for good. Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England, said that “70% of [UK] banks, who normally have a shorter horizon, are viewing climate as a financial risk—not a CSR one.” Larry Fink, CEO of Blackrock, the world’s largest asset owner, encouraged longer-term thinking about environmental, social, and governance issues in a strongly-worded letter to large-company CEOs.

Anecdotally, I’ve talked to leaders at big banks who are now thinking differently about purpose and systemic risk. And in a quieter move, a major real estate investor in Miami began pulling money out of coastal assets to avoid risk of sea level rise. Watch this space.

The clean technology explosion continues and accelerates

Three big clean tech themes wowed me this year.

1) Renewables keep getting cheaper. According to Lazard’s annual analysis of the cost of building new power plants, renewables are now the cheapest. And another global analysis showed that new wind and solar are cheaper than one-third of the coal already on the grid — and will be cheaper than 96% of existing plants by 2030.

2) Corporate buying of clean energy keeps rising. By the end of just the first half of 2018, businesses bought more clean energy than they did in 2017. Companies like Owens Corning (disclosure: a client of mine) are buying enough green energy to pitch their products as cleanly manufactured (which they started doing in late 2017).

3) Electric vehicle sales are exploding, and it’s not just small vehicles: even container ships are going electric. UPS bought its first EV delivery vehicles at price parity to combustion engines, and China is adding nearly 10,000 electric buses to the roads — equal to the size of London’s entire bus fleet – every five weeks.

China rejects the world’s trash

For years, the U.S. had a great deal: When container ships arrived from China with goods, we sent them back filled with our recyclable paper and glass. But starting January 1, 2018, China stopped accepting our trash. The ripples of this move are unpredictable and still moving through the system, but in some regions, materials piled up and prices for recycled content plummeted. In a business world trying to go “circular” (i.e., find a use for everything and eliminate waste), it was a wake-up call about how much waste we still produce.

The battle against single-use plastic heats up, starting (somewhat oddly) with straws

Sometimes weird things hit a tipping point. For a combination of reasons, including a viral video showing a turtle with a straw stuck in its nose, companies waged war on straws this year. Marriott, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Burger King, and the city of Seattle, among others, all banned or are phasing out straws. It was a very small part of a larger conversation about “single-use plastics,” most notably plastic bags, which IKEA and Taiwan are banning as well.

Raising the bar for suppliers

The greening of the supply chain is a perennial story, but there are some noteworthy recent actions. Apple created a $300 million fund to help suppliers in China build more solar, and also partnered with Alcoa and Rio Tinto to develop a better smelting process to make carbon-free aluminum. On the labor side of the supply chain equation, PepsiCo and Nestle cut ties with a palm oil supplier over human rights abuses and Coca-Cola said it would work with the U.S. State Department to use blockchain to fight forced labor.

Meatless options grow plentiful

Given the way most cattle is currently raised, one of the most effective things an individual can do to reduce her carbon footprint is eat less meat. The options to do so are growing, and the rise of products made from non-animal proteins has been remarkable. The Impossible Burger, Beyond Meat, and other brands have made believers out of skeptics (they taste great) and are, as the Wall Street Journal put it, “overrunning grocery meat cases.” In another fascinating move, tech company WeWork went meat-free in its offices and even stopped reimbursing employees on business trips for meat meals.

What comes next…

I’m sure I missed many stories, especially globally (my view is from the U.S.). Predictions are hard, but I’m safe in assuming 2019 will be a bumpy ride again. Ultimately, today’s global political situation is, at best, unpredictable. Brazil now has a strongman-style leader who talks about cutting down the Amazon, but the U.S. just swung its House of Representatives back the other way, giving power to Democrats who want more focus on climate change, inequality, and other sustainability agenda items. Everything You Need To Know About Ebikes

Hoverboards, skateboards, scooters, motorcycles, mopeds, unicycles, tricycles, you name it, we've ridden it. But I'm here to tell you why I think electric bikes, in particular, are more than just a fun tech fad. I think they could actually be the future of transportation. But that said, there's a lot out there, and you don't wanna get fooled. So here's some stuff you need to know about e-bikes.  

Obviously, e-bikes are not new. They've been around for decades. And if you live in China or Europe, it's a good bet that e-bikes are already a way of life for you. In Europe, for example, e-bikes have long helped older adults maintain independence and are just now really blowing up with younger riders. But here in the U.S., e-bikes are still pretty niche. They only account for 4% of total bike sales. Compare that to more bike-friendly countries like the Netherlands where there are more e-bikes sold than regular bikes. Overall, experts predict that worldwide sales will hit $23.8 billion by 2025.  But Americans are slowly coming around. Sales of electric bikes in the U.S. have grown more than eight folds since 2014. It took a long time to get to this point. 

Now one of the first patents for an electric-bike was registered in 1895 by an inventor named Ogden Bolton. Now Bolton didn't actually end up making or selling any of his bikes, but amazingly some of the same design details can be found in e-bikes today. A rear hub motor with a battery centrally mounted on the frame. Now I know what you're thinking. What the hell is he talking about?  A rear hub motor, amps and volts. I don't wanna get ahead of myself. So let's talk about the basics before we get to why e-bikes are the future of transportation. 

 So generally speaking e-bikes are bicycles with a battery-powered assist that comes through when you pedal or in some cases use a throttle. Pushing on the pedal activates a small motor that gives you a boost. So when you're zipping up a hill or cruising over rough terrain, you don't have to break a sweat. Twisting a throttle does the same thing but without pedaling. 

There are two types of motors. There's the mid-drive which is located in the middle of the bike usually between the two pedals. And then there's the hub motor which is located in the center of either the front or the rear wheel. There are pros and cons to both types of motors. 

Hub drives have been around forever and tend to be cheaper and more versatile. They're really excellent motors for anyone needing a reliable e-bike for long, mostly flat commuting. Mid-drives are usually smaller and lighter and can allow for greater torque than hub drives making them well suited for hilly areas and off road use. Their center position on the bike also creates a more balanced ride. And changing a tire on a mid-drive bike is usually less of a pain in the ass. 

e-bikes for sale also tend to use different types of sensors to determine how best to dole out power. There are two types, torque sensors, and cadence sensors. Torque sensors regulate the motor based on how hard you're pushing the pedals, while cadence sensors work off of how fast you pedal. 

Good bikes use torque sensors while the low enders have cadence only, and a lot of bikes use both. I highly recommend testing out both types of motors before buying an e-bikes to see which is the best for you. Think about how you plan on using the bike. Commuting, off-roading, touring?  The better e-bikes brands usually match the appropriate motor placement with the type of bike they're selling. Most mountain bikes come with mid-range motors while the majority of commuter bikes sold in hill-less Amsterdam are hub-based. 

Now let's talk power. Manufacturers will often offer power ratings for a variety of reasons. Until recently power ratings were a way for bike companies to dance around Europe's strict importation laws which prohibited anything stronger than 250 watts. But now the continent allows the sale of bikes with way more powerful motors, which is good because it allows bikes to be seen as a viable alternative to cars. Still, power ratings can be pretty subjective, and you can probably get away with just ignoring them. 

To get a better idea of how much maximum power you'll actually feel, check to see if they list the volts and the amps. Multiply those two together to get the watt hours or the number of watts that can be delivered in an hour. This gives you a great sense of how much range you'll get. For example, Rad Power Bikes' excellent cargo bike the RadWagon has a battery pack that is 48 volts and 14 amp hours. 48 times 14 equals 672 watt hours. If you're thrifty with your energy usage, each mile you travel will cost you about 20 watt hours. Therefore, a 672 watt hour pack will get you about 34 miles of range.

 Alright, let's talk classes. There are three classes of e-bikes in the U.S. Class one is pedal assist with no throttle. Class two is throttle assisted but with a maximum speed of 20 miles per hour. In a class three, it's pedal-assist only, no throttle, but with a maximum speed of 28 miles per hour. In Europe they only have two classes. Class one, which is by far the most popular, has a maximum speed of 25 kilometers an hour with no helmet required. Class two is 1,000 watt plus motors capable of going 45 kilometer an hour, require a helmet and can't be ridden on bike paths. They're basically motorcycles. 

So where can you buy an e-bike? Well, your local bike store is honestly your best bet. You're gonna get a selection that's been curated by the owners, and the folks that work there are gonna have answers to all your burning questions. Amazon is obviously another place, but there are some pretty serious trade-offs that you have to consider. Your bike could arrive pretty banged up. And the companies that sell e-bikes on Amazon are a little bit ephemeral, here one day, gone the next. It's not just Amazon of course. 

A majority of the e-bikes sold in the U.S. are just cobbled together from off-the-shelf Chinese made parts that you can find in the catalog. And if that sounds easy, it's because it is. It helps explain why there are like a billion e-bikes companies on Kickstarter and Indiegogo trying to impress you with their flashy designs and futuristic tech. Many don't come with warranties or any customer support. And it's very likely that you're buying a Chinese model that's just been rebranded for Western marketing and sold at a markup. If you find an e-bike that you like, an interesting test is to search the bike's specs on Alibaba to see if something similar is being sold in Asia. It might even be cheaper. 

Alright, so I promised to explain why I think that e-bikes are the future of transportation. So here we go. First, it lowers the barrier to biking. So if you're someone who's older or you're stressed out about the strains of biking, it really lowers the barrier, and it's easier to justify getting on a bike and just ride. You're more likely to ditch your car or delete you Uber app if you know you're gonna get to where you wanna go without getting sweating and stressed out. And look, if you're worried about electric bikes taking all the fun out of cycling, well, you're wrong. A study of the cognitive and psychological effects of outdoor cycling actually found the same results for e-bikes and traditional bikes.

 Let's say climate change has got you down.  Electric bikes are way more sustainable than electric cars. They're gonna make our cities more livable, and they're gonna help clear up traffic congestion. So as our cities are becoming more congested, some companies are turning to e-bikes to make their deliveries. Domino's Pizza recently announced they're gonna be using Rad Power Bikes to make pizza deliveries in some cities. UPS is using electric cargo bikes. German delivery company DPD is gonna be using these really cute looking mini trucks that are actually e-bikes in disguise. E-bikes are changing the way that businesses are doing business. 

So the other day I was riding an e-bike to work, and a remarkable thing happened. Well, first, I wasn't killed, which, in a city as deadly for bikers as New York, is a minor miracle. But more importantly I got to the office super quick, much faster than if I had taken the subway, and I wasn't a sweaty, stressed out mess when I arrived. Here e-bikes are almost exclusively used by food deliver workers, and it got me thinking about how far behind the rest of the world the U.S. is when it comes to bikes. We see them more as recreation than as transportation. Something to be used in fair weather and not in the rain and the snow like the Dutch do. But come on, our U.S. women's team just beat them in the World Cup. Surely we can compete in the saddle as well. Our streets are designed for cars, and pedestrians and bikers are really just an afterthought. But e-bikes can open up a whole world, especially for people with different abilities. Look, they're not gonna solve everything, but I can guarantee that once you start riding, you're not going to wanna stop. Did we make that word up? Is that a real word, rideable?

What does that mean?

We recommend that you do as much as possible in advance. Even here at Travelita’s, we have a lot of women (including myself) that are more of a letting things happen while traveling; pre-planning in some areas does make sense.

First of all, check all the airport specifications before you go there. That includes, especially if having a connection flight, if you have enough time to catch the other flight – due to the size of the airport. There are some that have different terminals, and you have to even take a bus from A to B. If there is only one hour in between, you might not make it.

Airport transportation. Of course, at any time you might take a cab. But sometimes, public transport is faster, cheaper and easier,. It just depends on the time you are willing to investigate. We recommend you take a look some days before, evaluate your possibilities. You can still take a taxi if you want though. If you go with your own car, travel agencies might sell off cheaper parking spots a little outside or further away. Check these availabilities as well. And take a specific note, where you left your car! (Consider taking a photo of where you are parked).

Check specifics of your airline. Nowadays, some require self check in, self luggage drop, etc. Make sure you are prepared to do it on your own, or arrive with some extra time so you can ask for help and still make it happen before your plane leaves. You might also want to decorate your checked bags, especially if they have this 0-8-15 look. First, it will be easier for you to find them on the belt, second, in case of lost luggage, it will be easier for them to identify yours.

Have your traveling documents close, within easy reach. It’s not the same at every airport, but there are a few you have to show tickets, passports kind of every minute.

We also recommend to have some travel essentials in your carry on bags, so in the unfortunate case of lost baggage, you have at least the most important items with you.

Also, you might want to bring water, or at least an empty bottle so you can (re)fill water once you are behind the carry on luggage check point.

Wear some of your luggage, like an extra jacket. Especially if you only use carry on.

"Everything runs on electricity in this house," she says.

This is the foundation of a zero-carbon world: Electricity that comes from clean sources, mainly the sun and the wind, cheap and increasingly abundant.

Kiliccote quit her job at Stanford University and launched a startup company, eIQ Mobility, helping companies replace their fleets of vehicles, such as delivery vans, with electric-powered versions.

Last year, the world's climate scientists put out a report showing what it will take to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees C by the end of this century, averting the worst consequences of climate change. It requires bringing the globe's net greenhouse emissions down to zero by 2050.

It's a giant leap for humankind.

So Sila Kiliccote and I take that leap. Sitting in her kitchen, with solar panels overhead and an electric car parked outside, we pretend that it has happened. It's 2050 and we've stopped climate change.

2050: The first step was electric cars. That was actually pretty easy

"By 2025, battery technology got cheaper," she says. Electric cars were no longer more expensive. "At that point there was a massive shift to electric vehicles, because they were quieter, and cleaner, and [required] less maintenance. No oil change! Yippee! You know?"

Heating and cooling in homes and office buildings have gone electric, too. Gas-burning furnaces have been replaced with electric-power like heat pumps.

We needed more electricity to power all this right when we were shutting down power plants that burned coal and gas. It took a massive increase in power from solar and wind farms. They now cover millions of acres in the U.S., 10 times more land than they did in 2020. Huge electrical transmission lines share electricity between North and South America. Europe is connected to vast solar installations in the Sahara desert, which means that sub-Saharan Africa also has access to cheap power.

"It just changed Africa," Kiliccote says. "It actually fueled the economies of Africa."

We now store electricity so that it's always there when we need it. With batteries, of course, but in lots of other ways, too. For instance, cities are using electricity to heat and chill massive tanks of water, which then heat or cool buildings at any hour of the day or night.

Some big cement and steel plants still are burning coal or natural gas, but they also have to install massive plants to capture carbon dioxide from their smokestacks and put it back underground.

"We just had to kind of bite the bullet and say, 'OK, if you're making cement or steel, you are capturing and sequestering that CO2,'" Benson says. "And in some cases we actually had to say, 'We're not going to make those things here anymore'" because it wasn't economically feasible to capture the CO2 emissions from that factory.

Big, long-distance freight trucks were a problem, too. "They're really heavy, and batteries are really heavy, and if you have to put a whole bunch of batteries on a truck it's really inefficient," Benson says.

Some of my guides see "electric highways" with wires overhead, and trucks tapping into the electric power in those wires the same way trains do. Others see trucks running on hydrogen fuel; we make that hydrogen using solar or hydro power.

It appears that aircraft still are burning jet fuel. When you buy a plane ticket, you're also paying to cancel out that flight's carbon emissions, capturing an equivalent amount of CO2 from the air. This makes air travel expensive. Fortunately, we now have much faster trains. Teleconferencing helps, too.

Sally Benson is absolutely convinced about one thing. The hardest part of this journey wasn't finding technical solutions. They all existed, even back in 2019. The hardest part was navigating the social disruption.

Entire industries died — like oil exploration and gas furnace manufacturing. Others rose to take their place, as the country rebuilt its electrical systems. People didn't know what would happen and they were scared. The changes only moved ahead when people were convinced that they weren't getting ignored and left behind. It was the political struggle of a generation.

Now, in 2050, there's a tremendous sense of accomplishment.

"Are there children who look around at all the old buildings and say, 'What are those things they call chimneys? What were they for?' " I ask.

"They do," Benson says with a chuckle. "You know, it's like a historical artifact, but you know, they find it very touching. They are appreciative, because they're living in a world where they don't need to worry about climate change anymore."

It wasn't easy and it wasn't free, Benson says. But it was absolutely worth it.

The air is so much cleaner. Cities are quieter. And we're no longer heating up the planet.

2019: I'm taking a walk through downtown Toronto, in Canada, with Jennifer Keesmaat, the city's former chief planner.

Two years ago, a new set of traffic rules went into effect here. "Basically, what we've done is, we've limited through-traffic for cars," Keesmaat says. It forced cars away from King Street and launched a whole cascade of changes.

The streetcars that run down the middle of King Street weren't stuck in traffic anymore.

They became the best way to get across town at rush hour. "The volume of people being moved is astronomical!" Keesmaat says, as one rolls by. The streetcars, of course, are powered by electricity, and one passes every two or three minutes.

2050: At this point, Keesmaat and I open up our minds and take a leap into a world that could be. Greenhouse gas emissions have dropped to zero.

The vast majority of streets have been pedestrianized; that's how people get around, by walking down the street," she says.

"What has happened to the sprawling suburbs?" I ask. "Are people living there? How are they getting around?"

"Some of the large homes haven't changed at all," Keesmaat says. They've just been turned into multifamily units." Other free-standing houses that once lined suburban cul-de-sacs have disappeared; each one has been replaced with a building that contains five or six homes. With the local population booming, those neighborhoods also attracted shops and offices. Suburban sprawl morphed into urban density.

Cars have mostly disappeared. "There are cars, but people don't own cars," Keesmaat says. "Because a car is something that you use occasionally when you need it." Streetcars and buses go practically everywhere in the city now, and you rarely have to wait more than a couple of minutes to catch one. Fast buses and trains connect towns. For other destinations, there's car-sharing.

"2050? It's a wonderful life!" says Daniel Hoornweg, another one of my guides to this zero-carbon world.

"So, you want an autonomous vehicle? Bless your heart, but it costs you more to drive that autonomous vehicle on the road by yourself. If you ride-share, it's a little bit less."

The basic recipe — densely populated neighborhoods linked by mass transit —has been the same for cities all over the world, Hoornweg says.

In part, people are forced to share things; cars are scarce and homes are smaller.

But the scale of zero-carbon life also makes it easier to share. We're living closer together and run into neighbors all the time. "We have more acquaintances — somebody we met in our ride pool or car pool or whatever," Hoornweg says. "There's no better way to [meet your neighbors] than sitting in a [shared] car and you can't get away from them for 20 minutes or whatever."

Some people hated losing their yards and their solitary commutes at first. Others loved the changes. Eventually, Hoornweg says, it just became normal. People stopped talking about it.

Life now goes on as it always did. But there's one huge difference. We're no longer heating up the planet.

2019: Jacobo Arango was traveling in a forested part of his country, Colombia, when he ran into one big reason for global warming. He didn't see it, but he could hear it.

"You could hear the chainsaw cutting the forest; and the locals [were] telling us that this is nothing unusual for them, that they were hearing that every day," says Arango.

This was totally illegal. But local farmers didn't dare report it. "They said, if you do that, your life could be in danger," Arango recalls.

Usually, what follows land clearing in the tropics is cattle grazing. It's a careless, destructive form of cattle grazing, and Tim Searchinger, at the World Resources Institute, says it's incredibly common. "Grazing land is about two-thirds of all agricultural land, and about a third of that came right out of clearing forests," he says.

It's a climate disaster. First, cutting down trees and tearing up forest soil releases huge amounts of carbon dioxide. Then, cattle release methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, as microbes in their stomach digest grass and leaves.

There are greenhouse emissions from other kinds of farming, too — from plowing and from fertilizer. Add it all up, and growing food accounts for a quarter of the entire climate change problem. That could increase, too, because billions of people around the world are getting richer; they want more beef, too.

"There is no solution to climate change that doesn't dramatically reduce the land use demands and greenhouse emissions of agriculture," Searchinger says.

He and his colleagues at WRI released a report last year that laid out a road map for how to do this. It includes lots of things, from wasting less food to reducing greenhouse emissions from fertilizer.

He's brought me to a farm in the Patía valley, not far from Colombia's Pacific coast.

This pasture is a bovine buffet. The grass is up to my waist. This is not ordinary grass that grows wild in this region. These are varieties with names like Mulato, and Cayman, which researchers at CIAT bred and selected to be top-quality cattle feed.

Angulo Mosquera says that these grasses grow so fast, and they're so nutritious, he can keep four or even six cows on land that used to support just one. He does have to manage the cows more carefully; moving them every few weeks to new pastures when the grass is ready.

"More milk, more meat," he says.

Now, because the animals are growing so much faster, they aren't releasing nearly as much methane per pound of milk or meat.

We're looking at an essential part of a world without climate change.

And as we stand there, Jacobo Arango and I just start imagining it's already happened, and talking as though it's real.

2050: The same way we stopped mining coal to generate electricity, we've stopped mining the soil to grow food.

Farmers aren't letting cows wander across the landscape in search of something to eat. They're treating their pasture like a valuable crop, which it really is.

Another critical change: Americans are eating a lot less beef now — per person, half what they ate in 2020. "That's a really, really big deal," Searchinger says.

But they've been part of something amazing. It's 2050 and there are almost 10 billion people in the world. They are eating better — yet the Amazon forest is still there. It hasn't been sacrificed to grow food.
