“Last night— last night you said something didn’t go how it was supposed to,” she ventures abruptly, knowing that their time is almost up as she glances at the suns.

“Yes.”

“What was that? What didn’t go right?”

Cassian shakes his head, his shoulders sagging. “I never imagined our first kiss to be for the sick satisfaction of some fucking depraved prick.” Jyn blinks at him as she leans slightly away, the acid in his tone surprising her. He shakes his head, barks a sour laugh. “Certainly was never another woman there, either.”

Jyn can’t help it, she preens, his anger and disgust at the circumstances of the whole affair last night not necessary in the least but no less satisfying. Sure, it’s petty, maybe fucking possessive, but she’s never had much of anything in her life worth being possessive over. If Cassian didn’t qualify as that for her, she doesn’t know what would.

She shifts closer to him, strokes his hair away from his eyes. “That wasn’t us, Cassian,” she tells him softly, a sad smile curling in the corner of her mouth, “It was Malik and Syla.”

His lips twitch, eyes brightening. “I guess you’re right.”

Her courage quickens as her eyes roam, taking great pleasure in looking at him from this vantage— the corded slope of his neck and the sheen of sweat over his collar bone. Her eyes catch on his mouth.

Cassian is still and tense under her hands, watching her, patient. He has already waited so long and still he waits.

She’s done waiting.

She kisses him.
