2020 fic round-up
[image description: picture of a bar graph titled â2020âł with bars representing words written in each month of 2020. the bars are made up of colored blocks that represent the words written for various projects during that month. on the bottom, thereâs a key: âfitzskimmons âverseâ (blue), âhoo rewriteâ (black), âschool essays 2019-20âł (green), âvarious fanfic/meta 2020âł (orange), âdoctor who ficlets 2020âł (purple), and âschool essays 2020-21âł (pink). in the upper left, thereâs a pie chart titled âprojects breakdownâ with colored slices that also correspond to the key. end id.]
SO I WROTE A LOT OF FIC LAST YEAR. like, a lot more than i was expecting to. in 2019 i barely cracked 100k (my total was 101,775 words) and last year i wrote......... 200,959 words. which is. a lot. honestly i donât know why or how so many words got written this year but i guess i just stuffed all of my anxious energy into my writing?
and there was a lot of anxious energy in 2020.
some interesting stats that i am writing out just because i feel like it:
july had the most words written with 34,151. november had the least with 1,684, although really it should have been december with the least. i wrote a lot of essays near the end of the year that i just counted for december 31. apparently stress makes it really hard to write, who knew? (i did. everyone did. iâm just trying to be flippant about how i've only written like 3k of fanfic in the past two months and iâm worried about my skills leaving me. anyway.)
ao3 says i published about 120k last year! (itâs approximate because iâm subtracting the first chapter of the fsk rewrite.) a.... reasonable portion of that is from the beginning of the year when i was posting stuff written in 2019, but iâm still proud of it! iâm really glad that i got to share that much fic with yâall, and iâm so grateful for how lovely all of you were when reading it.
i published 21 fics last year! thatâs about double what iâd posted in the past two years combined, which iâm proud of! the fandom i published the most fics for was agents of shield, with doctor who, mcu, and the west wing tied for second.
i published fic for nine fandoms last year (agents of shield, b99, doctor who, his dark materials, les mis, mcu, miraculous ladybug, steven universe, and the west wing). i had a very informal goal of ten fandoms, but iâm still really happy with the ones i managed to get to. six of those nine were fandoms iâd never written for! thatâs really cool and cash money of me i think.
i wrote 43,442 words for essays. that is MUCH too many. at least i am now done with them!
i started counting meta in my wordcounts last year! or, more accurately, i actually started following through on counting meta in my wordcounts last year. iâd been meaning to for a while before then, but last year i wrote quite a bit more of âmetaâ/headcanons than iâd expected to (remember when i wrote like 1k about each of the prequel movies and how iâd fix them?) and i figured iâd better count them since they were all the writing i was doing. this doesnât include stuff from ask memes, since i just.... didnât count those? but it DOES include things like that 4k post about the fsk playlist.
i ended the year with ten wips, which is more than i think iâve ever had at once before. they are in various stages of completion -- thereâs two or three that probably only need a few hours, and thereâs two or three that are literally just me having feelings in longform for [checks notes] CHRIST I WROTE 4K ABOUT THE SKYWALKER TWINS BEFORE THEY KNEW THEY WERE TWINS. okay then. whelp, that one is gonna take a LOT longer because it doesnât even have a central idea yet. weâll get there.
my most popular work of the year was in blackwater woods, to the surprise of absolutely no one. i love the doctor who fandom. yâall are just the absolute best.
my... least read (?) work (yeah weâre going with that) is bodies fashioned out of dirt and dust. (think you should come home had fewer kudos but WAY more hits and comments, so iâm splitting the difference.) itâs a fic for a small fandom about a tiny subsection of canon that features a character whoâs only been tagged in three works, so iâm not surprised. also, last i checked, ao3 counts fics tagged with both the book of dust and his dark materials as crossovers, and in a fandom tag like hdm where you need to filter out crossovers to avoid all the teen wolf daemon aus.... yeah i get it. iâm not super broken up over it lmao. hopefully the third book of dust installment will be SIGNIFICANTLY LESS TERRIBLE and people will check out the fandom tag!
so yeah! 2020 was a pretty good fic year for me, ignoring the two months at the end of the year where basically nothing happened. for a very informal goal.... publish things for those Big Fandoms that i love very much but have never published anything before? star wars, star trek, xmen, etc. (yeah i know i have an xmen fic but no i donât <3) OH and i also want to finish the fsk rewrite this year! chapter 3 is probably not going to happen by april, but hopefully i can finish it by the end of the year.
anyway, thanks for stopping by! all of you are such wonderful people and fandom was one of the highlights of my year. thank you for being so supportive, and hereâs to a 2021 that cleans itself up and leads to impeachment.
#sb and l rambles#sb and l is writing#if there's a way that i can improve the id please let me know#okay and now to tag all of these fics lmao#fic: in blackwater woods#fic: bodies fashioned out of dirt and dust#verse: fitzskimmons thingy#fic: you're a candle in the window#2020#fic roundup

SPN 1X02 Wendigo Retrospective Meta
Tagging: @emblue-sparks @metafest @verobatto-angelxhunter @evvvissticante @dea-stiel @sudo-apt-get-destiel @wildligia
Summary (via IMDB)Â Sam and Dean make a stop at Blackwater Ridge and end up helping a young woman and her brother find their other brother, who mysteriously disappeared, while on a camping trip, in the woods.
Teleplay by: Eric Kripke
Story by: Ron Milbauer and Terri Hughes Burton
Directed by: David Nutter
Post under the cut:
Episode Notes:
Our first Then-Now segment.
November 2, 1983- This, combined with Jess' tragic death, establishes it's been 22 years between the Winchester's lives being ruined by fires. The Pilot, oddly enough, didn't make the significance of the dates clear. I chock it up to the Pilot having so many drafts. that some plot relevant stuff got lost in the shuffle.
And, now our title card has sound! The first time we see SPN's logo, it's completely silent. Again, constant tweaks between episodes.
Blackwater Ridge
Lost Creek, Colorado
We open on 3 people camping, as one dude calls his sister Haley to deliver exposition.
Of course they're being hunted in the woods, as the camera gives us a monster's eye view.
Haley's brother (still nameless) is reading when one of his friends is attacked. Now, knowing this production crew, there must be some significance to the book he's reading-
-it's Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Who, in this book, wrote of the Hero's Journey.
I- I'm, I can't, Kripke, no. It's only episode 2, slow down. Please. You're getting ahead of yourself.
Gary's fucked. Bye, Gary.
Palo Alto, California
Confirmed, Jess died on 11/2.
Sam expresses grief, and then regret, in not telling Jess the truth, as we're treated to a bad jump scare that only got me the first time.
Dean offering to let Sam drive, to get his mind off of things, asking how Sam's doing. Doesn't buy it when Sam shrugs it off.
To find Jess' killer, they have to find John, who is nowhere to be found.Â
Connecting the dots already between Mary and Jess.
Blackwater Ridge
Lost Creek, Colorado
A bunch of abandoned gold and silver mines, hmmm...
Haley sounds like a worried older sibling. I'm sure Dean can relate.
Sam assumes Dean wants to get in Haley's pants, while Sam just wants to find John as quickly as possible. Dean notes his brother's change in attitude to "shoot first and ask questions later".
Tommy's his name. Tommy Collins. Alright.
Oof, Haley's really the older sibling. Looks like there's a 2nd brother, too, that she's cooking for. Reminds me of flashbacks of younger Dean, providing for Sam. Haley's very observant, as well, asking for ID and noting Dean's unusual car.
Parents gone, only "two brothers and me", not "us three". Call it clunky writing, or call it Haley identifying herself  not as her sibling's equal, but as the one in charge.
Dean connecting with Haley on her urgent need to find Tommy, "I think I know how you feel." At first, one would think he's just referring to John, but everything we've seen thus far from Haley screams as someone searching for a little sibling/feeling parental.
Haley shows Sam and Dean Tommy's last message (recorded on his fucking flip phone. Tommy would be the kind of person to use a go-pro or a selfie stick). Every 23 years. Alright, first off, I love how cryptic the Pilot was about the monster reveal, while here it's just 'Wendigo' in the title. Second, the similarity between the Wendigo and what John's ultimately hunting: a creature killing every 20 or so years. Maybe the slight difference of 22 years vs. 23 made John leave. Or, he figured out it was a Wendigo, and dumped the case on his kids without any heads-up.
Sam and Dean interview a Wendigo survivor from '59, someone who was so young when it happened, no one believed him. It all got swept under the rug as a Grizzly attack.
A little detail I'm noticing now; the Wendigo is vulnerable to fire, that's why it left the kid in '59 alive. The boy had fallen asleep in front of the cabin fireplace. And earlier, the Wendigo, just before killing Tommy's friend, hesitated at the sight of the campfire.
Sam and Dean figuring out the creature has to be corporeal, ruling out spirits and demons as potential culprits, means John probably knew, too. Knowing John's looking for the Yellow Eyed Demon this whole time...
Sam wants to tell Haley the truth to keep her from going into the woods, and Dean counters with this:
Dean: "Her brother's missing, Sam. She's not gonna just sit this out."
To further my point from before; the focus is on the worry a guardian would have for a dependent. Dean sees John as the man with all the answers. Dean relates to Haley not because his worries over John are equal to Haley's about Tommy, but because he's probably fretted over Sam the same way. An alternative, and equally valid point, though, would be Dean sympathizing with Haley over losing 'Family', as I brought up in 1X01, when Dean insists to Sam he's not only a Hunter, deep down, but a Winchester.
Sam: "Finding Dad's not enough? Now we gotta babysit, too?" (at the idea of Haley coming with them on the Hunt). The glare Dean gives in response to this shows how much Sam is missing the point.
The guy Haley hired is just trying to do his job. I used to be annoyed with him, but with this rewatch, I'm more annoyed at Dean. Dean's the one who insists they can't tell anyone their secret, and yet they (Sam and Dean) could've benefited from cooperating with Haley's group. It makes Dean come across as an arrogant know-it-all who dismisses the help of an expert despite being on such unfamiliar terrain.
We catch up with Tommy, who sees his friend get eaten. That's gonna need some therapy.
Dean starts sizing up the guide Haley hired, Roy, and Dean's doing the whole "Well, has anything ever hunted you back?" shtick. Right as Roy saves Dean's ass from a bear trap.
After Haley confronts Dean (who up to this point has just been giving Roy a hard time), he tells her part of the truth; he and Sam are really brothers, and they're looking for their father. Telling Haley this is the "most honest I've (Dean) been with a woman. Ever."
M&Ms as provisions. Of course, Dean. Only a 26 year old can get away with that.
Roy calls the group over to Tommy's campsite, which is wrecked.
Haley finds Tommy's phone. It must seem like any chance of getting in touch with her brother is gone for good. Dean comes up and assures her Tommy could still be alive. I'm sure Dean's felt this many times with John, especially now.
The Wendigo mimics a man's voice, lures everyone away, and takes the distraction as an opportunity to destroy/steal the group's supplies.
Putting it all together, Sam figures out it's a Wendigo. He tries to talk the group into going back to the cars, not giving the whole truth, and Roy's, rightfully, fed up. Think of it from Roy's perspective; these two actual babies come waltzing in, clearly lying about their government job, almost getting themselves caught in a bear trap, Sam and Dean must seem like a couple of walking disasters.
Poor Roy. Your greatest crime has been using logic.
Now, thiiis, referring to the Wendigo as not only a Hunter, but the perfect Hunter.
Dean: "Nobody likes a skeptic, Roy." Dean, you were pulling that shit with Roy, first. "Well, has anything ever hunted you back?" Having all the answers doesn't make you any less of a douche.
Sam and Dean come to the conclusion John has probably never set foot in Lost Creek. I still stand by the idea John checked it out, and then ruled it out. Sam and Dean have so little to go off of, in finding John, they're grasping at straws.
"Saving people, hunting things. The family business." Connecting what the Winchesters do as Hunters, and the Wendigo itself is the perfect Hunter. More on that, later...
Why doesn't John just call, play it to them straight? Because Sam won't listen to John, but he will listen to Dean, who's bought John's philosophy hook, line and sinker. And, John's so obsessed with revenge he sees nothing wrong with this.
The Wendigo once again tries to trick the group.
Bye, Roy.
It's the next day, and everyone left tries to regroup.
Sam and Dean fill Haley and her remaining brother in on Wendigos. Since the only instance of people being up in Lost Creek were miners, I'm guessing the Wendigo was a worker who got lost/trapped in a tunnel collapse with only their fellow miners to keep them company. And fed.
So, Wendigos are creatures who were once people, but give in to cannibalism. They then develop an insatiable hunger, but never turn wild; they're still very much Human.
Hi, Roy. Nice to see you're still hanging around.
Dean and Haley have been kidnapped, who could have ever seen this coming?
Dean's trail of M&Ms leads Sam and Haley's brother to an abandoned mine. Sam and the brother fall through the floor, finding the Wendigo's kitchen. They find Dean, Haley, as well as Tommy.
Dean volunteering himself as bait is tragically typical.
For once, Sam has to look up (at the Wendigo).
Okay, real quick, I appreciate the time and energy it took to make the Wendigo costume. For obvious budgetary reasons, SPN relies on monsters that conveniently look Human, so it's a real treat for the baddie to actually look monstrous.
Haley: "Must you cheapen the moment?" ladies, gents and distinguished individuals, this is Dean propositioning someone without saying a word and using only his facial expressions. People are gonna get confused over the next 14 seasons over Dean not verbalizing he wants to fuck, but I'm happy to say he's been doing it from the start. Bonus points is that Haley instead gives Dean a kiss on the cheek, which seems to fluster Dean, implying he wasn't actually expecting her to respond. Almost like Dean's putting up a front, or something.
Sam takes Dean up on his offer to drive, how sweet.
Post Episode Meta/Notes:
(These were all written during the episode, so if the flow feels weird, that's why. I just want to try sticking meta related stuff at the end)
(After Sam and Dean realize John was never in Lost Creek) Another thing, though, is this shows a similarity between John and Sam; with a 'bigger' hunt in mind, they're willing to let 'smaller' cases pass by. Call it selfish (it kinda is) call it what you will. Now, look at Dean. He may be arrogant, yes, but he can step into someone else's shoes and understand they need help. Haley's just gonna blunder into the Wendigo's clutches, otherwise. This is an example of, despite the separation of time, John and Sam have a lot in common.
(After going into the origins of the Wendigo) A person gives up their Humanity to become the perfect Hunter, but is forever consumed by hunger... for flesh, or revenge?
(After Dean and Haley get kidnapped) OH WAIT I'VE GOT IT ALL WRONG.
Roy is a stand-in for John. Older Hunter that's been at it for as long as Sam's been alive, acting condescendingly towards the younger Hunters, undermining their ability. Dean's giving Roy a hard time because he can't and won't say the same to John's face.
After that whole speech from Dean about all John knows being in his journal, and having that book bestowed upon him and Sam, it started to click for me.
Thatâs my take on 1X02 Wendigo! Thank you for reading, share your thoughts, and let me know if you wanna be tagged in my next meta on older Supernatural episodes! And, if youâre interested in more content about this particular episode, I have a post on both it and 14X16 Donât Go in the Woods!

S1E3 - Dead In The Water (Chapter 1)
A/N:Â Iâm posting again after taking a really long break. My apologies, I had a bit of a family crisis. Everythingâs all good, time to get back to my preferred universe.Â
Word count: 3,080
Summary: Itâs been over week since you took the wendigo case in Blackwater Ridge. With no new leads on their fatherâs whereabouts, the Winchester boys are getting antsy and clash about what to do next. A newspaper article sends the three of you to Wisconsin, where something stirs in the dark waters of Lake Manitoc, responsible for the disappearance of a young girl.Â
âAnd last night, Joni invited Mrs. Lieberman over for dinner and she brought one of her tuna casseroles-â
âOh no...â I groaned, having had a firsthand experience of our neighborâs cooking skills.Â
I had spent the past ten minutes of my Wednesday morning in one of Wyomingâs finest payphone booths, as my little brother Gus filled me in on the latest events back at home.Â
âI tried to get her cat to finish it for me, but even he wouldnât touch it.âÂ
Despite how much I loved hearing about the things going on in his life, right now my stomach was growling, egging me on for some breakfast, making it increasingly difficult to pay attention to him. My eyes trailed to the hotel diner behind me, where Sam and Dean had occupied the counter - their heads were practically butted together and I rolled my eyes at the thought of them arguing again. It had been over a week now since we had left Colorado and we had found no new leads on Johnâs whereabouts, which made everyone tense. Dean had started looking for cases elsewhere, to Samâs annoyance. Sam didnât think we should be doing anything else but searching for their dad. I knew he was worried, but I had to agree with Dean - although I didnât tell him so. The last thing I wanted was for Sam to think I was taking his brotherâs side. I only agreed that until we had something real to follow, taking cases was all we could do.Â
I said my goodbyes to Gus and headed inside. Sam saw me come in, holding up a hand to wave me over. It seemed their squabbling had simmered on its own - I couldnât help but notice the vacant seat that was now left between them.
With a small smile of greeting, I hopped onto the middle seat, eyes skimming the menu suspended on the wall. The smell of pancakes and bacon was almost intoxicating enough to make me forget we were looking for a job.Â
âSo, got anything?â I asked, eyeing the newspaper spread out in front of Dean.
âThink so,â Dean placed the page in front of me, the article he had circled in red capturing my attention.Â
âLake Manitoc, Wisconsin.â He began, paraphrasing. âLast week Sophie Carlton, eighteen, walks into the lake, doesnât walk out. Authorities dragged the water; nothing.â
I stared at the photo they had used of Sophie. It struck me that she was only a few years younger than I was. I remembered taking my yearbook picture like it was yesterday. Dean continued, âSheâs the third Lake Manitoc drowning this year. None of the other bodies were found either.â
I admitted it sounded like our kinda gig, but more than that, Sophieâs life was over before her senior year was and nobody had a clue what had happened to her. I felt like her family was owed the truth. Â
âAlright, Lake Manitoc,â I said, nodding. âIâll get breakfast to go then.â
We made the thousand miles from Wyoming to Wisconsin in about two days. We made an overnight stop at a motel for what I knew was my sake - despite Samâs protests that he and Dean were tired too. We both knew they couldâve made the trip in half the time without me, but Dean insisted I was doing them both a favor for coming with them. I was grateful regardless, I wasnât used to living on the road like they were. Apart from Samâs hiatus to college, this was the only lifestyle they had ever known, and it seemed old habits really did die hard, as he had adjusted back to it with ease. If my aunt Joni hadnât taken me and Gus in when my mom died, we probably would have faced the same upbringing.
Since I had hit the road with the Winchester boys, I had thought over my decision profusely. There wasnât much else to do on our travels but listen to the radio and think, until the ever-moving horizon turned my brain to jelly.Â
I realized I might have been a bit rash, tossing my college degree aside to come with them, but I had convinced myself it was the right thing to do. Their dad was missing, and Sammy was grieving, and whilst I could never imagine myself completely embracing hunting as a lifestyle, it offered me the kind of freedom I had been craving my whole life.Â
I had decided that I would stick with them at the very least until we found their dad, alive and well. I owed John that much considering all he had done for my mom before she passed.Â
It was around midday when we reached town and we didnât plan on wasting the day. Sam and Dean took off right away to talk to the Carlsonâs. I didnât have an ID for the Wildlife Service (Iâd have to get that one made for the future), so I checked us into a motel and began digging through website after website for anything on the history of the lake.Â
I didnât mind being left alone for a while. I had been stuck in a car with them both bickering for two days so I rather appreciated the silence. I sat cross-legged on the bed in my room, Samâs laptop propped up on my lap. I really hadnât been snooping, but I had saved a document to the computer and when I searched for it in his recent items, I stumbled across a picture of him and Jess. I was compelled to click on it. From the costumes and the date on the file, it was from Halloween, just days before...Â
Jess was dressed as a nurse, but I wasnât surprised to see Sam not in costume. He had never liked the holiday - too much crazy in his life already, I supposed. She was in his arms, and they were both beaming at the camera. That wasnât for me to see, and it only infuriated me. I closed the file, slammed the laptop shut and pushed it aside, suddenly feeling very guilty. Sam had been happy. He was doing what he wanted for the first time in his life. I had been so proud when he was accepted into Stanford, I had even been the one to send him off. But now it was back, the thing that had killed his mom, and it was fucking with his life once again. Maybe I was going to have to stick around to see the thing dead after all.Â
I jumped at the sound of my ringtone. It was Dean.Â
âHey, what you got?â I asked, nonchalant.Â
âWeâre on our way down to the police station now,â he informed me. I could hear the rumble of the Impalaâs engine in the background. âWe were just at the Carltonâs house. Sophieâs brother Will says she was a hundred yards out, when she was dragged under.â
âWell, what did he see?â I inquired, sitting upright as he peaked my interest. So far, we really had no clue as to what we were dealing with.Â
âHe wasnât there.â
âOkay,â I said slowly. âBut if he didnât see anything, how can he be sure she didnât just drown?â I had to ask the obvious, we had to be certain this was our kind of job.Â
âSophie was a varsity swimmer.â Dean said shortly.
âOh.â That was good enough for me. âI think I have something too.â I began. âItâs a good thing you called before, I looked into the area. Manitocsâ dam is falling apart and the town canât get a grant to repair it-â
I heard him and Sam discussing something in low tones so I wasnât sure he was really listening. âDean? Listen, this is important. It could blow your cover with the Sheriff. The lakeâs gotta be the source of this thing, but itâs going to be gone in a few months, so I was thinking that might explain the increase in bodies, right?â
I waited for his judgement, but all I got was some feedback on the other end of the line. He was distracted. âAlright, good job, weâll be back soon.â
I busied myself with reading Johnâs journal the rest of the day. Dean had left it with me for research, but, naturally, I was distracted by the vast knowledge it contained. I soaked up page after page of notes on creatures I didnât even know were real, some I hadnât ever heard of. Johnâs sketches were terrifying. I noted down a few phone numbers scrawled in the margins that caught my eye - I presumed they were family friends so I set them aside for Dean to call later. It didnât feel like my place to follow them up myself, but I thought maybe one of them may have heard from the eldest Winchester.
A couple hours passed, I had exhausted my resources and was staring idly out of the window, consumed in a daydream, when I caught a glimpse of the Impala turning into the motel lot.Â
There was a knock on my door a minute later, I called out that it was open and Sam stuck his head through the gap to tell me that they were back. I was still a little dazed, and he mustâve noticed because he frowned at me slightly before coming to a stop at the foot of the bed.Â
âYou okay?â He asked, shrugging off his jacket.
I gave him my full attention, suddenly burdened by a surge of guilt as I remembered how I had invaded his privacy earlier. âYeah, yeah Iâm fine. What did the cops say?â I said, turning our focus back to the case.Â
âWe talked to the sheriff,â he informed me, the bed dipping slightly as he sat on the edge. âHe did a sonar sweep of the entire lake.â
âAnd?â I prompted, hopeful, as there was another knock on the door.
âAnd nothing.â Dean interrupted his brother, shutting the door behind himself. âLake was clean.â
âWell I dug up as much as was on public record...â I scooted down the bed, to present my finds to them. I flicked through the disordered stack of paper that was my research until I found what I was looking for. âTurns out thereâs been six more victims over the last thirty-five years, and none of those bodies were recovered either.â Dean paced the length of the room in thought, his arms folded. âThe most recent three were all only in the last couple of months.â
Dean scratched his chin before deciding, âI think you were right about the dam. The lakeâll be gone soon so itâs upping the body count.â
âWhatever this thing is, itâs running out of time to get what it wants.â I concluded grimly.
âSo, what?â Sam interjected, setting the records aside. âWe got a lake monster on a binge?âÂ
We exchanged glances - all three of us skeptical. âThe whole lake-monster theory- it just bugs me.â Sam said, not yet satisfied with the verdict.
âMaybe a water spirit?â I offered half-heartedly. Â
âWe have to find out more about this thing before somebody else gets hurt,â Dean decided.
âDean, we donât have any leads.â Sam said shortly. He turned to me to elaborate. âWill wouldnât let us talk to his dad.â
âI mean, the poor guy...â I muttered at the thought of Sophieâs father.
âI donât know,â Sam said unconvinced, glancing at his brother. âDid you get the feeling he wasnât telling us everything?â
âYou shouldâve seen the look on his face,â Dean told me.Â
I glared at him. âYeah well, next time we need to pose as Federal Wildlife Iâll have my ID ready.âÂ
âBarr.â Sam interrupted suddenly. He was peering at his laptop in thought, eyes tracing the screen as he read. âBarr. Where have I heard that name before?âÂ
Christopher Barr was one of the three recent victims. I learned he had been married to the Sheriffâs daughter, Andrea, who the boys had met down at the station along with their son Lucas. Sam mentioned there had been some shameless flirting on Deanâs part, of course, but I cut him some slack - he hadnât realized she was a widow. A year ago, Christopher had taken Lucas swimming when he disappeared just like Sophie Carlton. The poor kid was left floating on a wooden platform for two hours before he was rescued.
âMaybe we have an eye witness after all,â I muttered, exchanging grim glances with the pair of them. None of us wanted to drag a kid back into this mess but it was looking more and more like the only lead we had.Â
âNo wonder that kid was so freaked out,â Dean remarked. âWatching one of your parents die isnât something you just get over.â
I skimmed my eyes over him.Â
Damn. I had forgotten hunts could get like this; really fucking personal.Â
My mom had been dead for almost nine years now. It was an accident; I was thirteen. Thatâs how I had really met the Winchesters. My dad had been out of the picture for years, so when she passed we fell under the care of my aunt Joni, as my momâs only living relative. Joni had the funeral once we moved to Oregon so Gus and I could still be close to her. I got my first glimpse of Sam and Dean at the service. Even among crowds of people I had never met, the pair of them stuck out like sore thumbs. I didnât know it then, but they had come to attend in the place of their dad, an old friend of my momâs, who was... otherwise unavailable.Â
As if high school wasnât brutal enough, I had to start freshman year, not once, but twice. Had I not bumped into Sam underneath the bleachers on that very first day, my life would probably be very different now. It had been his first day too, Sam and Dean had enrolled for a couple of months, and we quickly found we had more in common than just that. Dead moms, annoying brothers, and the like. I had never had a friend like Sam before, but with the Winchesterâs arrival in town, so came the sudden presence of the supernatural into my life.Â
It hadnât really been their fault, it was just a coincidence. In fact, had they not realized a poltergeist had latched itself onto my brother and I, we probably would have died. They said it was attracted to the negative emotions surrounding my momâs death - the grief, the anger. When everything was over, Sam told me what heâd been hiding from me, his family secret; the truth of what was really out there - and it scared the shit out of me. I had just been a kid, trying to wrap my head around the concept of death and the loss of my only parent. But what was the existence of the supernatural after dealing with all of that?
I hadnât realize that there were other ways for death to cripple a kid until I saw Lucas. I didnât think it was such a good idea - going to a playground without a kid - but Dean insisted we play it cool. With a bit of subtle stalking, we found Andrea and her son on the grass - the kid a few feet away, his head down as he drew with a fistful of crayons. Sam and I let Dean take the lead on this one.
âCan we join you?â he asked Andrea, casually.
Dean was undoubtedly a people person, though he didnât always come off that way. He was also good with kids, which didnât take me by surprise like it did everyone else. I knew he had practically raised Sam himself, but sometimes when he wore his aloof attitude for too long, even I could forget this side of him.Â
Andrea looked up. âIâm here with my son.â She was pretty, I noticed.Â
âOh. Mind if I say hi?â Dean said, already making his way across the grass.
âHeâs harmless, I promise,â I smiled sitting beside her. I held out a hand, âIâm Y/N by the way, we havenât have the chance to meet.â
She introduced herself politely, still looking uneasy about Dean approaching her son. Sam interjected with some timely small talk.Â
âTell your friend this whole Jerry Maguire thing is not gonna work on me,â Andrea said, eyeing him stubbornly. I suppressed a smirk as I realized she was attracted to him.
âI donât think thatâs what this is about,â Sam told her, sitting next to me.
âHe seems wonderful,â I said, watching Dean kneel beside the small boy. âLucas, is it?â
Andrea smiled warmly. âHeâs a real good kid.â
I nodded. âI have a kid brother,â I felt compelled to tell her. âHeâs a little older than Lucas.â
âThey grow up fast, donât they?â Andrea remarked.
âJust wait âtil he starts bringing bugs into the house,â I warned her, earning a laugh from her.Â
Andrea seemed more comfortable after that, as I had hoped. She eyed Sam and I for a moment. âSo, how long have you two been together?âÂ
âOh no-â I shook my head.
Sam cleared his throat, âWeâre not-â
Despite the same assumption being made incessantly over the years we been friends, we had never learned how to deal with it.
âOh, Iâm sorry,â Andrea said, and the three of us sat in an awkward silence broken only by Deanâs return.Â
Before he said anything, she began explaining her sonâs disposition to us. Since his dadâs accident, Lucas hadnât said a word, not even to her. Doctors had said it wasnât an uncommon result of post traumatic stress when it came to kids.Â
âYou know, he used to have such life.â Andrea sighed, watching Lucas with the kind of softness only a mother could harbor for her child.
âHe was hard to keep up with, to tell you the truth. Now he just sits there. Drawing those pictures, playing with those army men. I just wish...â Her sentence trailed away from her as Lucas approached us, a picture in his hand.
Andrea smiled at him.âHey sweetie.â
But Lucas stopped in front of Dean, his head down, holding out one of his drawings .Â
âThanks.â Dean looked taken aback, swiftly accepting it. âThanks, Lucas.â
Lucas quickly returned to his motherâs side, but Dean seemed troubled as he stared at the page. He flipped it over for Sam and I to see, whilst Andreaâs back was turned - it was a simple picture of a house, but it left the three of us unsettled. Was this Lucas trying to tell us something?

WEBCOMICS
I think I broke my links page with too many links, so itâs about time I made a rec post for some of my favorite webcomics! MAYBE YOUâLL FIND SOMETHING NEW TO LOVE.
This will always and forever be an incomplete list as I am always finding/looking for more stuff to read. Iâll probably reblog it every so often when I add more.
COMPLETE: Lady of the Shard by Gigi D.G. - I still havenât gotten to Cucumber Quest but you had better believe I read this the day it came out. Follows a temple acolyte who is in love with the goddess she serves, and all the complicated turns of events that come out of this. Drawn in a loose, experimental pixel art style that makes it all the more immersive to read. The Less than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal by E.K. Weaver - Eisner-nominated gay roadtrip romance youâve probably already heard of. Some of the best character acting Iâve ever seen. The Muse Mentor by Amy King - Artistic muses (and one vague notion) try to find their purpose on the astral plane, which happens to look sort of like a cute fantasy version of San Francisco. A sincere and kind-spirited read, highly recommended if you struggle with feeling adrift and inadequate. Also, many drawings of delicious-looking food. Power Ballad by Molly Brooks - I just started this but itâs really fun and funny. A masked vigilante/pop starâs personal assistant develops a crush on her boss. Itâs gay, itâs got superheroes, and itâs complete! IN PROGRESS: Agents of the Realm by Mildred Louis - I had a couple false starts getting into this one, not having grown up on Sailor Moon, but then I picked up the first volume at a con and Iâm really enjoying it. The unclear, complicated intentions of the mentor figure(s) are intriguing, and I love how the artist draws faces, especially funny reaction faces. Alice and the Nightmare by Misha Krivanek - A magical uni/boarding school piece with super cute art, compelling mysteries, and a Lewis-Carroll-inspired world thatâs fresh and fun I.E. not another Hot Topic rehash. FINALLY. Away to Nowhere by Ezra Shape - Monsters and magical beings adapting to life in our world (or a world like ours)--currently just scratching the surface of what seems like some really cool worldbuilding. Features Zio, my nonbinary dragon grandma. Balderdash by Victoria Grace Elliott - Cute coming-of-age witch adventures. Beautiful colors and a richly-textured world. FOOD. So much good food. Banquet by A. Szabla - [coming soon]
Beauty by Eric J. Lee and Rhiannon Rasmussen - From the about page: âBugpunk Beauty and the Beastâ and honestly WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED TO KNOW. Okay Iâll tell you some more: Thereâs a baroque alien bug civilization rendered in incredible detail. Itâs gorgeous. Blackwater by Jeanette A. and Ren Graham - Episodic supernatural comic set in the small fictional town of Blackwater, Maine. Just started, but the art is extremely polished, expressive, and atmospheric, and the characters are cute. Also itâs queer and full of monsters. Sold.
Brainchild by Suzanne Geary - Paranormal mysteries on a college campus with supremely cool monster designs and great art. The monsters: So cool. I also really like the attention to fashion details on the characters--you can tell a lot about each of them by how they present themselves. Demon Street by Aliza Layne - All-ages fantasy adventure starring queer kids with magic powers! Great use of vivid, saturated color to set otherworldly scenes. Excellent queerification of folkloric tropes.
False Edge by M. R. Shaw - Just started, but a long-awaited comics debut with fantastic art. Features adorable big-cat shapeshifters. Warning, itâs supposed to get nasty (thereâs an advisory page with specifics when you start). Feast for a King by Kosmicdream - I just started this (âjust startedâ = 300+ pages in) but HOLY CROW itâs one of the most bizarrely creative comics Iâve seen. Warning for like, unrelenting gore/body horror (and eventually monster sex I think?) Gotta admire the scope of this one. Galanthus by Ashanti Fortson - [coming soon] Goodbye to Halos by Valerie Halla - Fantasy/action-adventure with an all queer-and-trans cast! Huge-scale, trans-dimensional cosmic plot stuff. The art is supremely cute and the color design is fantastic. Harlowe Vanished by Amy King - A lonely teenage girl accidentally finds herself in some kind of oceanic fantasy world! Scary military stuff is going down! BEAUTIFUL scenic art and a colorful cast that weâre currently just getting to know. The latest from Amy, who did The Muse Mentor, recâd above. Heirs of the Veil by Phineas Kaldinski and Jassy Klier - Urban fantasy with lots of cool magic, a queer cast, and amazingly detailed environments that feel lived-in and full of history. Canât wait to see where itâs going. Hilga from Below by Val Wise - This just started but that means Iâm COMPLETELY CAUGHT UP on the archive and so far I can tell that it has: Excellent colors, a cute dog person, a fallen angel or alien or something, and some really unsettling stuff lurking under the surface. How to be a Werewolf by Shawn Lenore - Another one I just started, but really enjoying it so far. After twenty years of isolated lycanthropy, an urban werewolf is mentored by the first of her kind sheâs ever met, amidst a mysterious lurking threat to their kind. Kidd Commander by Aria Bell - This is the most fun Iâve had reading a webcomic in a long time. Kidd Commander is an epic shonen-style adventure with an immensely likable cast. Seriously, I love every last one of the characters, and their perils and triumphs and misunderstandings hit me right in the emotions like a ton of bricks. Iâm probably gonna cry at some point in this comic. I KNOW Iâm gonna cry at some point in this comic. But itâs also hilarious, with really well-timed comedy beats and expertly deployed reaction faces. The world also feels HUGE and full of interesting lore. This is just one of those ones where you can tell itâs an absolute labor of love and the creator enjoys every minute of making it. I could gush about KC forever. But I wonât. This time. IâM DONE. Kids These Days by Noora HeikkilÀ - Fresh webcomic from the creator of Judecca and Letters for Lucardo, which, if youâve read either YOUâRE FREAKING OUT TOO, RIGHT. Itâs about a group of young adults in the eighteenth-century-flavored city of Osk, refusing to fit the molds society has created for them. And itâs already great. Killjoys by Woods - Criminal mayhem set in a squishy cartoon circus toyland. Had me at âFluffy hot-tempered clown bunny with they pronouns, in a suit.â Something about this one speaks directly to my id. Kill Six Billion Demons by Tom Parkinson-Morgan - SPRAWLINGLY EPIC action-adventure in hell with vast-scale environments that will make you fall to your knees weeping. Also, like everyone in it is super hot and also a monster or some kind of divine construct. Violence. Lots of that. Larkspur by Grace Mulcahy - Post-apocalyptic action/crime/comedy piece centering on girl gang rivalries. Everyone is some kind of really cool-looking post-radiation mutant. Lush, vibrant colors set against dark comedy. Warning for some sex trafficking stuff at the start (not explicit) and general CRIME/VIOLENCE. Log Date by H. Kasof - [coming soon]
Monsterâs Garden by Ash G. - Urban sci-fantasy about a misunderstood prizefighter (who happens to be a lizard-man) who just wants to be left in peace--but is suddenly faced with the challenge of caring about others and having them care about him. Full of cute and sympathetic characters. Monster Pop! by Maya Kern- Light and fun college dramedy with a cast of colorful monsters (and some humans), including a cyclops, gorgon, and witch. The art is super cute. Queer and trans characters! Never Satisfied by Taylor Robin - A group of flawed, complicated teens compete for a prestigious role that is basically something like State Wizard. The characters are SO GOOD, sympathetic across the board even when theyâre being misguided jerks, and the comedy highs and dramatic lows are equally prime. The main character is nonbinary and they are my sweet, emotionally stunted child. Oglaf by Trudy Cooper and Doug Bayne - Everyoneâs favorite bizarro-comedy-porn medieval fantasy comic. NSFW, as if I had to tell ya. Parhelion by R. Smith - Sci-fi adventure featuring a huge and hugely-gender-various (and queer) cast with a lot of choice trope subversions. The writing is super witty and I find myself laughing out loud a lot. Puu by Ashkay B. Varaham - An own-voices slice-of-life webcomic about gay/trans roommates and the people connected to them, set in India. Look, I am a huge goopy romantic and this comic has EVERYTHING that feeds my soul. The Sea in You by Jessi Sheron - Lonely, environmentally-conscious goth girl with a jerk boyfriend makes the acquaintance of a MUCH BETTER (girl?)friend in the shape of a mermaid. Another one with very cute art and an interesting, creative mermaid design. Everything teen me ever wanted in a comic. Warning for the boyfriend being an emotionally abusive jerk. String Theory by Dirk Grundy- Probably the comic Iâve been reading the longest. Sci-fi/post-apocalyptic/alternate history/crime stuff centering around morally sketchy characters on their path(s) to super villainy. The art is frigging phenomenal and the comic has been going for like, ten years so if you wanna see some art evolution, check it out. Laurence is my fave. Superpose by Kieran and Han - [coming soon] Unconvent by Emil N. TĂłt - Romantic historical fiction about queer nuns in eighteenth century Brazil! I like how simple and straightforward this comic is. We are promised happy endings. (Update: Unconvent is now on indefinite hiatus but the author has started a new comic, Dead Scholarsâ Whispers) Thatâs it for now! Let me know if I screwed up any of the links or attributions.
