This is fairly discourse-y so I’m putting it under a cut:

To make a long story short, a certain now-deactivated tumblr user made a shitty post about how awful Meihem as a ship was due to it being ‘abusive’ and drawing attention to how inherently better Roadrat and Zarmei were (I can’t quite remember, but I think they also mentioned something about how only straight people ship Meihem or something). I politely chimed in that in my opinion that Meihem was not inherently abusive simply on the virtue that the two dislike each other currently in canon - since, you know, fanart and fanfiction are transformative works, with the goal of making new content from old, and in said new content, new relationships and feelings and character development can occur - and I also pointed out that ships like SombraZarya, Reaper76, Widowtracer, etc, primarily involve two parties who dislike each other just like Meihem, and yet I never see anyone addressing those as abusive in nearly the same way. Ultimately I said that two consenting non-related adults isn’t a subject worthy of discourse, and that being this angry over some people essentially doing the virtual equivalent of smashing two Barbie dolls together is pointless.

Cue this user siccing their followers on me, sending me anon hate, digging through my posts to find other content I had responded to as if to try and make me a bad person, etc. There were a number of callout-esque posts also made trying to frame me as a homophobe and abuse apologist, despite me being pretty damn gay and also a multiple-time abuse survivor, but in the moral crusade of shipping, I suppose any sort of rhetoric goes.

Because of this event, a very large number of Overwatch (particularly Roadrat) artists, including the two mods of the Roadhog art week event, have me blocked or blacklisted. I have been refused from multiple zines on the basis of my involvement in that discussion, I continue to get anonymous hatemail on the subject to this day, I was forced to withdraw from several artistic events (like secret santas) due to being paired with someone who had me blocked, etc. All because I said that getting your panties in a twist over the existence of a ship is dumb. lmfao

If you’re more interested in who exactly I’m referring to, I can give you a semi-cumulative list of popular artists I know have me blocked and who started this discussion to begin with.
