Very casually dropping in an entry I did as a warm up. My brain is all fuzzy lately and I took a break from a bigger project for a week to take care of my sack of meat body IRL because my hormones are shit and I fell off the face of the earth for, like, a week, and then I couldn't get started on my larger project again. So I smashed my brain with a stick until art fell out so I could prove to myself that I still have art muscles. Coincidentally enough, I also pulverized the part of my brain that forgot how to draw humanoids until it remembered how to do that again. Percussive maintenance, if you will. (I am not actually injuring myself IRL, this is hyperbole, I promise.) So yeah, I'm probably going to be doing this super casually and probably outside of February since I have more IRL meatspace obligations that I am juggling. I may try to do one entry for each of the 4 themes to start or I may take it extra slow and do all of them at some point or other as warmups and do all the different mushrooms with their themes as I feel like it. Not officially back online yet, but I am browsing around Tumblr when I have time, so... Yeah! Cherub-inspired character to fit the theme of celestial for the mushroom Mycena Subcyanocephala. All the references I looked at showed this TINY mushroom with a singe fruiting body in the frame so I drew a cherubic sort of cyclops fairy/angel/cherub creature. Selected the mushroom because it was the first on the list so why not? The colors in the reference photos were nice enough so I figured why not? Might just draw the mushroom itself at some other time! Speedpaint here, so I can remember how I did it if I ever have to stop making art again for another 10 years. XD

I drew some concepts on notebook paper, and honestly the lips/lipstick I doodled out was a big main design element from the start, which is unfortunate because they're small in the grand scheme of the piece. The sort of digitigrade, faun-like legs were a whim, and I had my heart set on puffy pants to match that fat stem body on the mushroom, so I think a different pose might have been better because once the actual color and rendering goes down, you don't see much, if any, of the initial shape I set down. Maybe slightly more distinct colors between the skin and clothes too since that hand disappears into the pants a bit. But for something I smacked out in a couple hours, it's not bad. Especially for my first real attempt at drawing humanoids from imagination in a good, long while. (Clip Studio Paint, Gouache Brush, Airbrush, Gouache Blender, and Pencil Brush. 2 ish hours.)

A few ft away is a small cabin which is where Sam (nOT TO BE CONFUSED W SAMSON FJDJFJ) resides when he's not afk from the system, andddd further back in the headspace is,,, more foresty stuff I think?

But that's just the main layer lmao. Our other layers are mainly kinda in outer space, but the layers my sibs, family, and my other sourcemates reside on are an abandoned cathedral and an open, stormy sea.

Side Stories 2

Even as my Prototype II cards arrived, I knew I would need to set up another print job.

You see, my stepdad wants to learn Magic and I made an attempt that went over his head. That's when I decided to show him how to play Magic in a much more structured, regulated way. I had been working on a learning tool before this, and now I had a willing subject.

I won't bore you with details now, but suffice it to say that I have managed to boil Magic: the Gathering down to its essentials and created a "lesson plan" that can be scaled to any student's ability. A student can even remain on one of the many plateaus of complexity for as long as they want and still have lots of fun.

I call this project Magic Academy. It could be an interactive digital learning tool, a physical bundle product "kit" for folks just starting out or it could be incorporated into my Magic MMO idea where Magic academies have popped up all over the multiverse to standardize basic magic usage with the hidden agenda of creating more planeswalkers.

Before I go any further, I want to clarify that these ideas are all at least a decade old. Long before Magic Legends was on the horizon, well before Strixhaven was announced and even before Magic Arena was on anyone's drawing board. Yeah. I missed some opportunities to be the only producer in these spaces, but I was less convinced of my product's potential as I am now. Even now, I have no plans to sell or even freely distribute the ideas I'm about to reveal in a proper, polished, packaged form. I flirted with the idea of doing something for Magic's 25th anniversary, but I never had time to get anything off the ground. This is purely fan art at this point.

The card images in this post are of the five cards I designed specifically for the lowest level of Magic Academy. Originally, there were to be no sorceries at all at what I call Level 0, but I felt that I could successfully design a cycle of super-simple cards that could help with the inherent stalemate problem that is the basic lesson of Level 0 -- "You're going to need more than just creatures to win a game of Magic."

The other thing that occurred to me when I saw my designs in meatspace was the idea that I could have presented my mom with a vanity card in her honor (not necessarily with her actual image on it -- I don't think she'd like that). in time for her birthday if I had thought of it sooner.* It was too late of course, but I found the exercise amusing enough to expand upon and now that it's complete, I still intend to put in the order.

Next time: Let's take a look at my literal Vanity Project so you can all laugh at me and my hubris.

* I don't usually like to reveal details of my home life, but yes, my parents live with me. In an amusing reversal of the adult-nerd-living-in-his-parent's-basement trope, THEY live with ME. They lost their home through no fault of their own and I have taken them in. They pay their way and do their share of chores and I don't make them feel uncomfortable about the arrangement. We're all partners.

…about the series, especially the NME versions. I’m glad that is something the fandom has embraced wholeheartedly. So, other than reading excellent books, have you any other hobbies? Any sports or crafts or anything like that? I’m quite enjoying getting to know you! You really express yourself so beautifully in writing~ I hope I can learn to express myself so well~

No worries!  I had just assumed circumstances conspired against us one way or another.  (I do not consider myself to have been wrong. I have a long history of inadvertently losing time to books!)

I have no idea why that’s the default!  I mean, I can kind of understand the volume, excitement usually involves excess energy or adrenaline or whatever, and if it slips out unexpectedly as sound it’s probably going to have some force behind it.  I’ve been known to let loose a “HA!” before myself (mostly as in “take THAT!”, because I do love to prove people wrong when they doubt me).  But I don’t know why most people seem to go high-pitched?  Or, for that matter, why they drag the whole thing out for so long?  My excitement is not at all a long, loud, shrill thing – but that doesn’t seem to be normal in the slightest.  (Flailing is fine.  Flailing is often adorable and pretty much always quiet in and of itself, and I absolutely understand excitement expressed as motion.)

Anywho.  Hobbies!  I am somewhat infamous in local meatspace as a puzzler, for starters.  I love the paperboard texture of puzzle pieces in your hand, and the rustle as you paw through the box looking for prime suspects (or the smoothness and the satisfying *click* of the plastic pieces snapping together, if you have that kind of puzzle, or the hushed whisper of foam-backed ones as they tumble and bounce off each other).  I don’t care so much about having a finished display piece as I do about just. Putting the puzzle together, because I can, so I’ll go back to the same puzzle more than once if I like the feel or the trick of it. ^_^  (I will put together anything but I casually collect puzzles that are unusual or different or catch my eye, such as tiny or 3D in some fashion or double-sided or interestingly shaped or intended to be challenging.)  Sometimes I’ll put a puzzle together upside-down, picture to the table, just to have done it (but you have to have the right kind of puzzle for that, tightly cut and variation in the pieces, or it doesn’t work very well).

I am also reasonably well-versed in cross-stitch!  I learned it in the single digits, dabbled every few years or so, and picked it up again in college.  (When I graduated, I actually gave all of the professors in my major and some of the staff I’d worked with cross-stitched thank-you cards.  It was a frankly absurd undertaking for a condensed-course graduating college kid, and I am somewhat amazed that I finished them all, but I’m still really proud of some of those cards.)  I have gotten out of the habit in recent years due to time constraints, mostly, but I dug out my old stitching-to-do pile last year and have been slowly easing my way back into the rhythm of things.

I don’t participate in sports much any more, but I was pretty active back in my school days?  I played soccer for nearly a decade, I think (AYSO, never actually on a school team for Reasons).  In middle school I tried at least a season each of basketball, volleyball, cross country, track, and parade band (only running and band stuck).  I played tennis and swam in lakes in the summer and also just generally ran around wild.  In high school I did marching band, swimming, and track.  (Track was 9th and 10th grade only; junior year I got knee surgery, which wouldn’t actually have been a problem except that the coach insisted every practice that I be alone in a tiny little windowless room that smelled like old sweat, with the door closed “to avoid disturbance”, and ride a rough old exercise bike thing for two+ hours because actually running out on the track would hamper my recovery. Theoretically.  Never mind that the surgeon had given me a clean bill of health and free reign.  So.  I quit after a few weeks, and never went back.)

As for sports in general, which in retrospect is probably what you were referring to, I have never followed sports as a thing, even with the ones I loved being in.  I just. Don’t have any emotional investment in people I don’t know, maybe?  I dunno.  Basically I don’t mind that sports fans are fans of sports but I don’t really understand it, because there’s absolutely no draw there for me. =P  (Given the basic laws of the universe, I shall now assume that you are a sports fan of some flavor and I have dealt you a grave insult. lol)

Thank you for the compliment, by the way!  I suspect I blushed.  I would like to state for the record that I’m enjoying this as well. ^_^  If it helps any, looking back on my own writing over the years, the trick seems mostly just to be to keep doing it?  My style as it is now crept up on me over the course of years of forum roleplay, and I had no idea how dramatically it had changed until I went back after the fact to reread some of the first posts I’d made.  (I think that boils down to “Keep calm and write on”.  You don’t have to be consciously aiming for an ideal in order to get better.)
