the dictionary informs me that the h in héros is aspirated while the h in the related adjective héroïque is not. yeah, likely story. am i a joke to you? am i being punk'd?
#bad enough that apparently houille is aspiré and huile is muet when i for some reason thought it was the other way around#but at least those are from different roots (even if the meanings are semantically related enough that i sometimes get them confused)#but le héros vs l'héroïque? are you joking me right now?#french#my posts#this came up because i saw the phrase 'l'héroïque' in voyage au centre de la terre and was like 😒 wait a second....#i am looking forward to seeing if i can spot any patterns in the dictionary#but i'll be real with you this has thrown some water on the embers of my hope :(#if even these two related words can't agree on h aspiration then what hope do the rest of us have?#i guess there's only one thing for it. diving back into the extremely intimidating world of french diachronic phonetics#may glorb have mercy on my soul
