i wish olympus overdrive could've been the webcomic that got a huge following a physical publication and a netflix series instead of lo/re oly/mpus.
#i know that the artist stopped updating and abandoned the project bc of burnout and the scale of the comic being too grand at the time#and he's doing well as a league of legends artist these days i think#but like it was such an interesting story#if anyone was a fan of zatch bell it was basically like that but with the greek pantheon#and the gods team up with random humans to do a big ol' tournament to see who gets to rule olympus for the next millennium or something#admittedly i dont remember the entire premise bc it came out and ended like a decade ago#the designs were so amazing too#raspbeary or oscar vega had such a cool style at the time#his current stuff is also amazing i recommend checking his work out#that was the first time i had seen aphrodite designed as like a proper plus sized woman#and not just the renaissance soft but still pretty small body#although maybe hephaestus's design and story wouldn't be particularly liked or accepted these days#as he is usually depicted as physically disabled and his design either takes that disability away or he never has it in either form#which is something that gets added in is the humans when they get matched up basically redesign the gods via a silly online survey#so like if you said you were 4'5 then the god would be 4'5 to match with whatever you said#i think it was so that the gods would be better suited aesthetically to their human partners#but it backfires on a few of them or better reveals certain characteristics and preferences of other characters#like zeus gets transformed into a lady who basically looks like a supermodel girlboss with gold skin#and hades shrinks down to the size of a 3rd grader as a joke#such an interesting comic i mourn regularly#olympus overdrive#it's not like it didn't have a fandom on tumblr and regular readers#it really did just turn out to be a project that the author couldnt afford to focus on anymore#AND IT WAS FREE#before the days of everyone having a patreon

Ray and His ERMEN (Whole/Universal) Light
There’s been a buzz online, on social media and Reddit, that Ray is not his own character and is just following Emma since the “mess” with the Seven Walls began in March 2019. (When I start binge-reading the manga, anyway even though I told my parents I would not get into any more manga.)
Why is that such a big deal?
Why does it matter, that Ray, a 13 year-old boy, is following the dreams of a girl?
Oh, yeah.
It’s because she’s a female and he’s a male and…
that shouldn’t happen.
GIVE. ME. A. BREAK.
If Ray was following Norman, there would be no issue. People would be cheering him on 100%. But follow Emma?
OH NO! She’s a pacifist. She’s naïve.
It is quite odd.
Tons of male Shonen male protagonists have the same will Emma has.
I have read manga since I was eleven. That is thirteen years now.
That are kind. That do not want any harm on anyone.
That believe in the will of the people, and always have a strong sense of morals and justice.
Tanjiro Kamado (Kimetsu no Yaiba/Demon Slayer)
Izuku Midoriya (Boku no Hero Academia)
Lag Seeing (Tegami Bachi/Letter Bee)
Naruto Uzumaki, the most infamous for his “Talk no Jutsu” (Naruto)
Boruto Uzumaki, his son
Zatch Bell and Kiyo Takamine (Konjiki no Gash/Zatch Bell)
Yuuichiro Hyakuya (Owari no Seraph/Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign)
Rokuro Enmado (Sousei no Onmyouji/Twin Stars Exorcist)
Shirou Emiya (Fate/stay night)
Saber (King Arthur, Arturia Pendragon), also from Fate, who was criticized for caring about her people as king.
Sieg and Astolfo (Fate/Apocrypha), who are hated more than Shirou combined by Western fans. (And also...were /not/ in a relationship.)
Ken Kaneki
(who was also mocked online and called unrealistic in his peaceful attempt to create a world where ghouls and humans could live in peace), Tokyo Ghoul
But.
The problem are the demons.
People say that (kindest insult here) that Emma is stupid because she doesn’t want to kill demons.
Demons are the enemy and we should kill them all!
BUT….in RL…what is that called again?
Oh yeah.
Genocide.
Genocide, which, in RL, is an international crime.
I took an international law course, so I know.
Genocide is composed of various parts, but the main key to prosecuting someone on crimes against humanity (which is basically just killing people) and genocide (which specifically targeting people based on their race, ethnicity, religion, etc..) is the intent.
The intent to kill or the conspiracy to kill is a crime, and the persons involved are tried on the highest court in the world.
Let’s say…
Organic Gummy Bears were constantly under threat from the demon Tootsie Rolls.
The Tootsie Rolls saw the OGB as food and hunted them.
But one brave, heroic savior of the OGB came up with the idea of slaughtering all the Tootsie Rolls to save his family and the children.
He created a gas that made the Tootsie Rolls lose their humanity and literally go insane (which is one count of genocide and chemical warfare) and kill the noble Tootsie Rolls.
Despite another OGB coming up with a plan with no bloodshed and for the Tootsie Rolls to not give up their humanity to eat the other OGBs.
The other complaint others have is Ray’s lack of character when he “gave up” when Emma disappeared.
Why was he so devastated? Why did he give up and not say, “never give up because I am a typical Shonen protagonist!”
There is a problem with “never giving up.”
Not knowing your own weakness is one. But another, is not realizing when you have been beaten and need to retreat to become stronger and wiser.
Emma is Ray’s light. She is his pillar, the one he believes in, the one who slapped him when he eleven years old and told him that he was not dying. It is likely he wanted to kill himself since he found out about Grace House at 6 years old.
Forever alone, distancing himself from other besides Emma and Norman.
He wanted them to live but didn’t want to live himself.
But then Emma came with her idealism shining so bright that eventually, almost immediately after they escaped, Ray vowed to live and take care of his family.
Emma is his world, which is interesting, because her name can translate as “whole” and “world.”
To Ray, Emma is all of those things.
Why else would Ray’s entire being crumble without Emma’s presence because of his self-esteem issues, survivor’s guilt, more guilt, PTSD…need I say more?
Which is why I have a theory that Emma will have to stay behind in the demon world in order for all the children to go free.
But Ray will not have that.
I predict that in “The Lost Boy” chapter, the Ray we saw was of Ray after Norman’s final genocide plan. I predict Ray went to the Seven Walls again to save Emma from her fate.
So certain individuals complaining about Ray’s lack of character because he is following a girl…
It is almost 100 years since women were allowed to vote in the United States.
Think about that before you start mouth misogynistic bullshit load of garbage.
