i know Law doesn't work this way but i dont think it should be illegal to pirate something you already own. i want a digital ROM version of pokemon ultra sun so i can play it on an emulator on my PC instead of on the cart in the little handheld that gives me a headache, but the ROM dump tutorial on 3DS hacks doesn't work for me which is especially frustrating when it would be legal for me to back it up and play it myself but it just isn't working

The Best and Worst parts of past Pokemon games
Iâve watched ShayMayâs 7-hour analysis on Omega Ruby and as youâd expect itâs getting me to think about what are actually the best and worst parts of Pokemon in the past. Iâm still glad he literally goes through the entire game going into both the good and the bad of the game, and Iâm basically only bringing it up because of the sheer amount of effort put into it. Obviously the video was made before Sun and Moon came out so thankfully some of his quandaries have been solved, but still itâs interesting to see the on and off of certain things throughout the series. Most of the time it gets better as time goes on, but still, it feels like you could get an amazing Pokemon game just by piecing together the features of past games (even if youâd definitely need a few additions to get it perfect, if thatâs even possible).Â
To be honest I really am slowly falling out of favor with Sword and Shield, and it kind of makes me hope that Gamefreak can still get better. Even though the games sold like hotcakes, hopefully they have the heart to realize a ton of people didnât really like the direction, even though it still isnât ïżœïżœbad,â just worse than it feels like it should be. Even though bad direction canât be remedied by other things, the fact that they are a multi-billion dollar franchise really makes it feel like they could afford to make it better, especially when past games did do what people wanted...

DLC/âEnhancedâ Versions:
I will genuinely take DLC over âenhancedâ versions any day. Even though youâd think a lot could be improved between the base versions and enhanced ones, thatâs usually not the case. The only ones that truly changed the game were Black and White 2, since they were treated more like sequels. Even golden games like Platinum didnât divert much, even if it is an objectively better version than Diamond and Pearl. Considering the games are now going to be a solid 60$ each, it would be even crazier to expect someone to buy the base and enhanced versions. Only paying 30$ for multiple expansions (at least two, could be more) with the content of said expansions being put out as a free update otherwise is a much better deal. The only people this hurts are the types who reasonably wait for the inevitable enhanced version and only buy that instead, since itâs always better, even if only a little. As far as I know, however, Pokemon is one of the only game franchises that releases enhanced versions of games soon after their release (as in, not years later when technology advances and they can profit off nostalgia), so really theyâre just becoming more normal by doing this.Â
Of course thereâs the argument that there shouldnât be any DLC or âenhancedâ versions, and all the content of the game should be included in the base game. It would obviously be preferable to not pay for it, but as is painfully obvious, even the richest groups can still be money hungry. Considering theyâre inevitably going to make one or the other, DLC is going to be the better choice overall because itâs much more expandable. You rarely got to see a substantial amount of content added on in the enhanced versions. If they made us pay 30$ for the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra separately, that would be crazy. But, since itâs 30$ for both, they could easily insert more bits alongside the rest of the Expansion Pass, maybe allowing them to carry a game for multiple years under less resources on their part compared to trying to make a whole new game. That way, maybe they can devote even more resources to future generations and remakes. Thatâs all just speculation though. Iâm kind of impatient, writing all this before the day it releases and when we get more info for the future, so basically just take this as my opinion the whole time before the DLC came out.
Honestly, though, I almost always fall into the camp of gamers completely misrepresenting the concept of DLC, saying they just cut off some of the content and made you pay extra for it. A few bad apples really soured the bunch in this case, because, even though Sword and Shield did feel kind of lacking in some places, saying the Isle of Armor or Crown Tundra wouldâve been a seamless part of the game no matter what is just obviously wrong. The games felt âcompleteâ in the sense that it is all they wanted it to be, and it has a clear start and end. Just because you donât like it doesnât mean itâs unfinished. Again, obviously it would be better if it was free/included already, but thatâs just a given.Â

Remakes:
Basically, I love the usual formula for remakes. I actually really liked ORAS, and I feel like it improved on so much, making me actually like Hoenn as a region. Even though I played them closer to when they game out, RSE feel like a slog compared to modern stuff, especially with the lack of the physical/special split. I can definitely feel some nostalgia for the originals still, but 90% of the time I go back to those games looking for nostalgia, getting bored by the time I get to Rustburo, and turning it off. As mentioned by Shaymay, thereâs still a ton wrong with it, but Iâd much rather play them all the way through compared to the originals. I do still want to force myself through them eventually, though.
Heartgold and Soulsilver are widely considered to be the best games in the whole franchise, so I donât have to say much. Iâm not a Johto nut so Iâm not the best at selling it, but I will say it feels so much more colorful and polished visually than the rest of Gen 4.Â
Firered and Leafgreen have the same problems that make me dislike RSE, but Letâs Go Pikachu and Eevee are the strange cases that make the future so uncertain. I liked them for what they were, but I swear God if they do that one more time itâs going to make the fanbase erupt. The Letâs Go formula worked for Kanto because a lot of the people playing Go are people who knew the original games but not the newer ones, making Letâs Go a good entry point with mostly familiar territory and slightly dumbed down gameplay. It may work again if they do a Letâs Go in Johto, but if they do it for Sinnoh, since itâs the next one on the chopping block, itâs going to fall insanely flat. Barely anyone who only loves Go also seriously wants to play through Sinnoh. Thereâs little nostalgia there, and the nostalgia with Sinnoh resides in everyone else who loves the games as they are/as they originally were. Plus, people say theyâre some of the hardest games, so dumbing them down ruins part of the appeal more. Since remakes pretty much entirely profit off of nostalgia (and partially from people wanting to experience a region without the limitations of its origins) they really need to just, you know, remake the game. Same deal as any Pokemon game, just with better (if youâd call it that) graphics and modern sensibilities. Considering all remakes (IMO) look better than their originals, I donât think we have to worry an insane amount about them looking as iffy as SwSh. I donât think they look THAT bad already, but I definitely think theyâre some of the ugliest in the series.Â
I will say that I do still want remakes to happen. Iâm a sucker for nostalgia, and I love seeing graphically enhanced versions of past regions. Also, my favorite region is up next, so I really just want to see what happens. Iâm a shill so it canât make me hate the originals more. Or, you know, maybe that just makes me a normal, reasonable person...
Graphics:
Obviously we just want texture quality, model quality, etc. But, I think thereâs something to be talked about with the overall art style.
Iâm not gonna lie, I was kinda into the chibi-esque models of X/Y and ORAS. It did feel like it trivialized the more serious characters, like the villains and major legendaries, as they looked too cute, so itâs probably for the best if we stick to ânormalâ proportions. It felt weird when I first saw Sun and Moon, but I got used to it. I always wanted to make my character look as cute as possible so the chibi style helped with that, but I have gotten some good results from Sword and Shield.Â
For character customization (if it even counts as âgraphicsâ) I think Sword and Shield really hit the nail on the head. Iâm kinda biased, because Moon and Ultra Moon had a really shitty shade of purple as their designated âpurpleâ clothing, and SwSh really got my favorite shade of it right. I do think itâs great to have one style of clothing under different, generally standardized colors. But, I definitely think we need more body types. Like, one of the main reasons I play as a girl in games like this is that the boy character doesnât even look like me anyway, so thereâs really no good reason to play either. Even if itâs just one separate character option for each gender, like a Skinny male/âRoundâ male/Skinny female/âRoundâ female Iâd be fine. Obviously Iâd want some character sliders at some point, like pretty much every other game with character customization does, but I can settle for one more generation. The alts could even be more shoehorned rivals like in X/Y, so they basically have the design cut out for them.
One weird graphical thing I want brought back is the little circular platform your Pokemon lands on in a battle. For some reason, I really liked that. It does make the battle feel more in tune with the overall environment without it, but sometimes the battle fields look really bland and flat without it. Iâd at least want the floor to be designed in a way to look like there are devoted spots for each Pokemon to stand on, even if itâs not a separate thing like in X/Y. It just feels more satisfying. Not really a big deal though, since Iâve been able to ignore it for this long.
The big thing is animations. I am getting extremely tired of the X/Y models. Thatâs 3 generations so far that use them, and some of them arenât even good. Iâll never hesitate to drive this point into the ground, but I really wish Pokemon like Xatu, Charizard, Dragonite, and Salamence are permanently floating/flying in air. If it isnât obvious, this is the way it is because of Sky Battles in X/Y, since they didnât want to do extra work for the Pokemon permanently suspended in air. The problem is that those four Pokemon (and probably many others) really donât feel like they are supposed to be in the air 24/7. According to their official art and sprites, theyâre all on the ground. Xatu especially was made to look super tall and stout with its geometric wings flatly put on his torso, like the totem pole itâs supposed to be. In the air, it basically just hovers with his wings out, and for some reason it looks like thereâs a large gust of wind keeping it afloat. It looks really weird. Salamence is also in the same boat, since its wings are so weird and not wing-like that making it constantly fly just looks so unnatural. Mega Salamence was at least designed to look like itâs supposed to be flying, but normal Salamence really should just rest on the ground. Heâs too fat to be permanently lifted by his weird wings. Charizard and Dragonite arenât as severe, since both are clearly shown to be otherwise super capable of flight, but they do feel better on their feet. I remember watching TyranitarTubeâs series on one of the Extreme Randomizer hacks of the game, and in there somehow they made a Dragonite use itâs Amie/Refresh animation of sitting still on its feet in battle. It seriously felt so much better to look at, instead of this giant, poofy dragon being carried by its comically small wings. Basically, the way you should tell whether to keep them on the ground is based on the official art/sprites. That is the way the designers intended them to be depicted, so thatâs the way they should be. Some exceptions that Iâm actually fine with are pretty much all the regional birds, except Unfezant. They all look pretty decent flying, since flyingâs basically all they do⊠Even Swellow, who has the same strange gust of wind as Xatu, feels more fitting like that because it seems so much more aerodynamic.Â
Apart from that, I just wish they were at least a little different. Iâm not super against the muted colors they have compared to the sprites, but I wouldnât be against more saturation. Considering how much work was put into all the different animations of the battles, Refresh, and both walking AND running animations, I unfortunately donât think theyâre going to change any time soon unless they explicitly say theyâre going to change them for quality improvement. I would say the Pokemon from Gen 6 up are still pretty fine, since they were more meant for 3D.
As for battles, one of my favorite Pokemon games is, in fact, Pokemon Battle Revolution on the Wii. Not only was it super Sinnoh-focused, but it had multiple body types (even if I still look like none of them) with character customization for all, and great graphics for the time. People always look to it after citing the lacking Double Kick animation from SwSh, saying how animated the models were and how they liked the Pokemon actually running up to their target when using a physical attack. I will say that the model quality for a lot of them were still kind of iffy, and that some of the animations were a little too much. Specifically Pidgeotto, who was on one of the rental cards, was super energetic so as to seem a bit crazy, and felt a bit low-poly for the otherwise high quality of the environments and humans. However, going back to such a formula would be extremely welcome. Iâm totally fine with the Pokemon not running up to their targets, but I wouldnât be mad to see it put in, especially since the walking and running animations are already in the game. They would need to be balanced in terms of speed, though, since some of the animations in PBR felt really, really slow with that animation in there. Plus, some moves just need speed, like Quick Attack.Â
In terms of the move animations themselves, I do think some of the water effects in PBR felt too realistic compared to the rest of everything. Also, people say Double Kick looked bad in SwSh (like it ever looked good), but a hell of a lot of Fighting type animations in PBR were literally just the Pokemon walking up to their target, smacking them with nondescript flashes, and thatâs it. So many of them could hardly be pieced apart depending on whether they were kicks, punches, or whatever. It wouldâve been better either way if they put the physical move attack animation in for Double Kick, but PBR has its fair share of shitty move animations too. Moves like Seismic Toss looked fucking insane though, and I loved it. Seismic Toss specifically is the true test of move animation quality.Â
Also, itâs kinda irrelevant to anything, but I could totally get down with the Announcer from PBR returning for major battles like Gym battles or League battles. He was so much fun, even if a bit repetitive. All you need for that is a setting to turn him off, and bam. Heâs a true classic.
More generally, though, I think Sword and Shield is a seriously mixed bag of graphical quality. I give the SwSh haters a lot of flack, but the one thing I 100% agree with is the texture of the trees from the Wild Area. They are god awful, even if it was in a game a decade ago. I seriously donât know how they messed that up, since you can download better bark textures for free on the internet. Surely someone at Gamefreak couldâve done better there. If this was just a random tree in the background of some random route, then who cares, right? But no, this is practically every single tree in the Wild Area, the biggest selling point for the region and the game, where you would always spend the most time. You see so many of these trees everywhere, and they look horrible. I also hate the look of the berry trees, since they donât seem to use the same lighting effects as everything else (just a guess though), but even apart from that the batch of lighter leaves on top of the bottom ones just looks so artificial. It looks as if they dumped a sphere of leaves on top of another sphere of leaves, like it was ice cream. Maybe some trees in the real world look like that, but sometimes itâs an artistâs job to take what sucks about reality to make it better for fiction.Â
On the other hand, I think locations like Motostoke look genuinely amazing. The brick textures are pretty good (compared to the tree), and all the colors and shapes of the place look really good. Also, when they go into full-on cutscene mode, the models, scenery, and everything else really shine. Obviously Iâm not the king of all visual media, but itâs just weird to see that. Itâs hard to compare to past games, because everything else was either 2D or on the 3DS, which wasnât as powerful. Even though the Wii is definitely less powerful than the Switch, it doesnât really count since thereâs infinitely less content to worry about in PBR. Much more of the work couldâve gone into the graphics. Really, there doesnât feel like thereâs any excuse unless crunching is involved on the business side of things, which I really hope isnât an issue for their sake. I would honestly love to see them announce that theyâre taking a year or two off to devote themselves fully to a new generation, instead of trying to keep a yearly schedule. Something something Miyamoto quote something something.
Stylistically, itâs also a mixed bag, but at least this time itâs all just subjective. It feels like a lot of the game is meant to be somewhat blobbed together in some ways, like its a painting meant to be looked at from afar. It feels like there arenât major outlines for things. Specifically with the Pokemon, they donât have that outline theyâve had for the 2 generations before. Itâs never been a big deal, and I really hate how low quality the outline made the models feel, so I donât really know which style I want. Even though itâs still decent, I feel like most 3D models made to have a super notable outline on them look a little funky sometimes with it, so I donât know if I want that, but without it they just donât feel as solid. I really just donât know there.Â
Music:
It feels like, even if a franchise is kinda iffy, the music is still consistently top tier. Like, no one thinks Sonic games have objectively bad music, even if they donât like it. If they do, theyâre just wrong. Pokemonâs the same, so thankfully this isnât a test of which past game had the highest quality music. I do think the Wild Battle theme in SwSh does feel like it has a weird melody, but that is super outclassed by universally acclaimed bangers like the Slumbering Weald, and the battle themes of Marnie, Bede, Oleana, and the Battle Tower. Those arenât just the best the generation has to offer, theyâre seriously amazing themes.Â
Back in Gen 7, we have the Kahuna Battle, all themes of Team Skull and the Aether Foundation, Lillieâs theme, the Ultra Beasts (which might be more contentious but I like it) and Hauâoli City at night. In Gen 6, I at least liked the themes of Laverre City, Team Flare, and ESPECIALLY the Xerneas/Yveltal battle theme. Donât even get me started about Pokemon Battle Revolution. I could go on and on, but I at least want to spotlight ORAS here because they knocked it out of the park with Archie and Maxieâs battle theme. It was the perfect drop, because the intro felt super muted and boring, and I was afraid they completely snubbed it, but the drop completely blew me away, and absolutely perfected the theme with the crazy trumpets Hoenn is known for. Also, Zinniaâs theme is amazing, as well as many other themes that are just improvements over the originals. The one thing Iâm semi-iffy on is the Regi theme, an amazing theme for my favorite trio, but I never think anyone really makes it feel as lumbering and deep as it should, considering what itâs supposed to represent. The beat is arranged as it should, but it never feels punchy enough for me.Â
Iâm really just praising the music here. Frankly, I see no reason to think the music is getting any worse.
Difficulty/EXP Share:
Theyâre basically the same thing, at least according to Gamefreak.
I always keep the EXP share on, but I do think that making it a permanent addition to the game was a major mistake. As explained in Shaymayâs video, it actually increases the overall experience you gain in battle, at least before. That seems absurd to make a permanent addition (although they likely changed it in SwSh because of that). I honestly just use it because Iâm not into a challenge in games, but it should definitely be optional, if for no other reason than to be a bootleg difficulty slider. However, What about the difference between the Gen 6+ version and previous versions?
I think itâs easy. Make it like pre-Gen 6, but give you multiple shares. So, if you want to train up two underleveled Pokemon, make it so you donât have to swap it between them. That way, if you really want to just spread the EXP thin, you can give one to everyone you have, and thatâs that. Also, I think it should perfectly split the EXP, not adding anything onto it. If everyone on your team has one and you get 120 EXP, thatâs 20 EXP for everyone. Of course, I do actually love the mechanic of being able to switch the share holder in to give them a disproportionately larger amount of EXP compared to everyone else. It just doubles the effectiveness of switch training, and makes it better for when you want to train them up but specifically not the higher level Pokemon youâre using to fight.
Some part of me wants to keep my precious easy mode in, but then I realize⊠Just make actual difficulty differences. Just give us a choice. Even if itâs just a âHow well do you know the Pokemon world?â with a âI know all about it/Iâm a bit unsureâ text box in the beginning. In the harder variant, tutorials will be skipped automatically, trainers will have higher AI, and better teams. However, I donât think higher levels is a perfect foil, because that can just be beat with grinding, and grinding is boring. Also, Iâd have to guess the main reason why Gamefreak didnât do this in the first place is that trading Pokemon would differ a bit between difficulties with different level curves, although apart from it just sounding like a bad thing Iâm struggling to think of a genuine reason why it is. But, for the sake of playing, grinding sucks. Itâs not fun, and I honestly think you shouldnât just bump up levels and call it difficulty, because you donât actually need skill to beat a higher level, just a better level and maybe RNG. But, if you actually had to effectively train a team of more than six, with Pokemon you swap out depending on your opponent, you would actually need to think of how you play the game. I think the main reason Pokemon games are so easy is that you can basically choose whatever you want and do almost whatever and still win. Some fights, as far as my playstyle goes, are still decently challenging because I just choose what Pokemon I like and not as much whatâs good (unless something genuinely just sucks), and those battles, even though I would probably get annoyed at losing over and over, feel so much more rewarding to beat. And, of course, thatâs only like a few major fights. Iâve never had any real trouble with trainers. I only think Iâve had a bit of trouble with the elite trainers in Letâs Go because I always try to use my lowest level Pokemon first to level them up, and keep my team at completely even levels. If I always just switched in the foil to my opponent, which I inevitably had, I would almost never lose a single Pokemon, mostly because of the âswitchâ battle setting.
But of course that begs the question of Pokemon being balanced for children and inexperienced players. I know way too much about this game, so obviously itâs a piece of cake for me no matter what, and what I want is supposedly what would frustrate everyone else. But⊠again, just put in the choice. People can choose whether they want to be challenged, or if they just want to play Pokemon, and if they choose wrong thatâs on them, not anyone else. They could just reset the game and try again on an easier difficulty. Itâs crazy to have to vouch for this, since itâs a staple in pretty much every other game in existence. Even in my casual state, I want to play a harder Pokemon. I want to test myself. Online competition is a bit much for me, but the AI is too little. Even in me replaying Pearl right now, Iâm trying to use weirder and weaker Pokemon than I usually use for difficulty, and even that game was mostly a cakewalk. Iâm only stuck at the Elite Four because I was somehow super underleveled. In the generation where I experience the AI switching out the most, they still just do that at random and keep in certain Pokemon that get completely walled by what I have out, only for me to stall them to death. AI definitely should switch out (and I honestly canât remember it happening once since Gen 5, if even then) so if anything, just give them a more solid switching ability. Considering we have the opportunity to switch in whatever we want when they are about to send out something, they really need to take advantage of the power of switching.
Gyms are a big piece of difficulty that falls apart 90% of the time. The gym puzzles are rarely hard, with only a few notable exceptions requiring major thought, like the Circhester, Snowbelle, Snowpoint, and Sootopolis gyms. See a pattern? Why the heck to Ice types/themes get the worst resistances yet the best gym puzzles? Otherwise, if youâre not just fighting trainers (which you were going to do anyway) youâre bashing your head against a wall until something sticks. The Trials of SM/USUM were universally a joke, and were it not for the Totem fight they wouldâve actually made me mad by how easy they are, considering they had the opportunity to revamp the whole system and knock it out of the park.
As for the Gym Leader, assuming we have to stick with the idea that they can only use one type still, they really have to cover their bases. Like, a Water gym leader would really have to have Flying type moves or Pokemon to counteract the easy Grass weakness, or something. You canât get to the top with just one single type and nothing else. I do kind of think a master with no specific type speciality should only be reserved for the Champion, since it makes them more special, and because it seems like any old trainer can become one if they beat the last one, meaning itâs illogical for too many of them to have one special type. I can appreciate the choice philosophies of the Gyms like Raihan and Volkner, and Flint of the Elite Four, where they do specialize in one type, but they have a lot of different Pokemon involved who only have moves of that type. It still feels consistent, but also more varied. Also, I love the 1v2 dynamic of Totem fight. Not only does it blatantly put you at a disadvantage, but since the battles arenât explicitly type based, they can put together some seriously unique strategies, like the Sunny Day Castform partner to the Totem Lurantis. Itâs literally the most basic plan you can formulate, but it sure as hell made that one of the hardest early boss fights in the series, at least for me. It was pretty good stuff. Too bad other bosses like the Ultra Necrozma fight was just kind of cheap, with a +1 to all stats and super high level⊠Better than nothing though.
Versions:
I get that itâs a staple of the franchise, but I really hate version exclusives/differences. Theyâre just dumb. Specifically the differences of Black 2 and White 2 pissed me off the most, because guess what? They did have difficulty options! But⊠they were version exclusive. Like White Kyurem more than Black Kyurem? Or, maybe Reuniclus is your favorite Pokemon? (not bitter) Well, too bad. Youâre only allowed the expressly easier mode of the game, which you only unlock after beating it normally????? Thatâs just stupid. Iâd sort of be okay with it if you unlocked easy mode after normal mode, then unlocking hard mode after beating easy mode (like how I thought it was before I looked it up), but limiting stuff like that is just ridiculous. I mean, itâs dumb to have to unlock an easy mode after beating the normal game to begin with. Iâm honestly considering trying to beat easy mode without evolving any Pokemon though. Self-imposed difficulty is fun sometimes, but yeahâŠ
Also, the differences of Sun and Moon also are dumb. Like playing in the day, but like Lunala more? Maybe Purple is your all-time favorite color and you want to wear it? Well, too bad. Go ahead and flip your 3DSâs internal clock around, messing up all other time based games you play. Itâs a gimmick that transcends Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, and Dynamax.
Now, thereâs a completely new problem: Some people bought the wrong expansion pass for their game. Because there were two versions, people literally just wasted money on absolutely nothing. To be fair, those people are blind idiots, but still. I really just want one version. Please.
The whole semi-in-grouping that happens when the version exclusive Pokemon are first revealed is kinda fun, but 90% of the time people have to settle for a few Pokemon they like and a few they donât. For example, I bought Sword specifically because I like Zacian more, and the legendaries would be much harder to come by than other version exclusives. In the meanwhile, I preferred practically every other version exclusive over Swordâs, including but not limited to my boy Reuniclus. I donât use old Pokemon in newer generations anyway, but it still sucks to have to choose like that.
It was obviously meant to give people much more to look for, since they physically canât get some Pokemon, and have them interact with others to get them. The only problem is that we just have the Internet now. It doesnât help to just ask someone online for a trade for a version exclusive. Itâs just an extra stepping stone that really isnât that fun to deal with.
I was originally going to say that the games/console cost more so less people would buy them, but considering SwSh absolutely knocked it out of the park, overselling even the highest selling games from the past, thatâs clearly not an issue. My sister even bought Letâs Go Pikachu after buying Letâs Go Eevee for herself, since we both initially got Eevee. Thankfully she seems relatively into buying the games now, so we can coordinate and get different versions. Thatâs how I was able to complete my Pokedex for the first time in Sword (although obviously thereâs less Pokemon to find). I think she even bought a separate Sword version for herself too⊠Is this what the average consumer is like?
Honestly all of this is just sort of subjective because really itâs not a big deal, but it would be so much less of a deal and make the games much more perfect and reasonable story wise if they just used one version. For example, Circhester is clearly an Ice-themed location, but in Sword you face a Rock gym leader, instead of the Ice one. And, the opposite is true in Stow-on-side, because Sword has the more logical gym with the boxing gloves punching you around and the tough city that feels as Fighting as Fighting could be without being a literal dojo. But, in Shield you face some Ghost kid. To be fair, I do like that version exclusivity is bleeding into some of the characters too, so if there is to be version exclusives at all let there be version exclusive characters, but it would just feel so much better to have it all sorted into one place. Also, to consider past installments, Ho-oh is clearly more important to the overall plot of the world than Lugia is, as shown by Ho-oh always being an important, mystical lore figure in the Anime and such, while Lugia is just like âWow, thereâs Lugia! So powerful!â Thankfully the plot didnât entirely revolve around them, but it couldâve if they just focused on Ho-oh.Â
Story:
Pokemon has definitely had its fair share of dumb stories, which is excusable because itâs not actually the focus of the game, but it doesnât hurt to have.
You obviously canât talk story without talking about Black and White. Also, you really canât talk a Pokemon story without talking about the evil Team in each game, because theyâre basically the entire motor for plot. Still, though, Team Plasma is easily the best Team in the franchise for story purposes. The biggest thing is that they seem like the most reasonable team, making them seem like people who are just so into their ideals that it looks like a cult. Also, in B2W2, they actually split up into the friendly division of Plasma, where they actually carry out their goals of wanting Pokemon to be happy and free, while Neo-Plasma does all the Team Rocket-level shenanigans that mess everything up. Not only is it just reasonable, but it answers a question that comes with the overall concept of the franchise: How can Pokemon want to battle for the sake of humans, etc? It doesnât make sense, and naturally someone in the world would take that to the extreme when they realized it. It also makes sense why the grunts are so hellbent on wreaking havoc around Unova, because they are each led to truly believe what they are doing is right for the world. Other villains like Archie and Cyrus are just like âhumans are bad, letâs destroy themâ which is like a lite version of this idea, but it feels almost too supervillain-y to take seriously, and the grunts just feel like henchmen. Plasma feels just real enough, with somewhat level-headed people like N making it seem like theyâre almost not crazy.Â
People always say Team Rocket is the best, but even though their motives are so simple enough so as to seem real and good story-wise, they do feel like they donât really add anything to the overall idea of Pokemon. At the time it was just âPokemon are strong so bad people can use strong Pokemon for badâ which makes sense, but really doesnât feel like it extends beyond that. Donât get me wrong, I would say theyâre objectively second best (because subjectively Galactic is my #1) but I do think Plasma is better.
Since theyâre the most recent, Team Yell is the most nothing out of this list. That only makes them second worst, above Team Flare, who felt like they were trying to do something big but fell flat. Team Yell as the resident âevil Teamâ feels weird, because they do almost nothing. They are only similar to Skull on the surface, that being all rough-and-tumble teenager types, as underneath them being a toxic fanbase is somewhat interesting, but they, again⊠just felt like nothing. The plot wasnât even close by to them, like with Skull was, being tied in with the Aether Foundation. Theyâre just there to be goons and go away. At least they did lead to the first Dark type gym leader, but again⊠their leader is a Gym leader. We wouldâve seen him no matter what he did, so it feels less interesting. I do want the Team to actually do something.
The problem is that, since Plasma already did good, how do you do something thatâs original but still good? To be honest, I want it to involve Foundations, like a morally good alternative archetype to the evil Team. Our first run-in with a Foundation was led astray by a crazy leader, but it seems like theyâre still good overall, so I at least want to see more of them. Maybe instead of the Team searching for world domination by using the box legendary, maybe you and the Foundation have to search for the box legendary so they can help you defeat the Team, who may or may not have the third/another legendary on their side, and you have to prove yourself to it to get it to trust you. Sort of like Sword and Shield, but more involved. Zacian and Zamazenta just sort of appear when things go bad, and thatâs it. You just hear stories about them before that. Thatâs at least better structure-wise, although the motives and themes would still have to be dealt with. There are so many possibilities there itâs hard to choose.Â
One thing, though: I definitely believe that Pokemon was never even close to an open world game, and people thinking the new games are too linear compared to the old ones just have rose tinted glasses on. Kanto had bad crossing over, where youâd sometimes find yourself severely overleveled when interacting with a story event, and beyond that all other games were pretty linear too, with only a few slight special, optional areas that arenât involved with the plot. Of course, I still think the game would benefit from being open world. Some games donât have to be open world, and that makes them feel sort of empty, but Pokemon as an idea is exactly perfect for that. They were toying with the idea a bit with the Wild Area, and I do think if they really went crazy with that idea it could be fun. Everyone always wants to compare it to Breath of the Wild, but I do love how seamless everything is in that game. Even with the enemies popping up out of the grass/flying down from the air/just romping in a set area like Pokemon would. Gym leaders could just use different teams based on how many badges you have, like how they imply it works in that Pokemon Origins series. Then, you might be able to scale up the Pokemon you can find too that way, like with the Wild Area. BotWâs story was very light, but if you just either use a quest system/map markers you can still manage a decent story in an open world. Plus, Pokemon has a ton of side quests anyways, like all the ghost quests they always seem to put in. You can literally âgetâ the quest, get distracted, and completely forget you were even doing any sort of quest because they donât remind you in any way. Side quests could even get you extra doses of EXP for your team, giving them a use.
The Gimmick:
I donât want every generation to have a gimmick. Ideas are severely limited in that front, and when everyoneâs special, no one is.Â
Mega Evolution was kinda cool, as it improved on old Pokemon without making them another part of an evolutionary chain. Also, it lets some Pokemon get different forms with entirely different strategies to them (even if theyâre version exclusiveâŠ) But, as someone who plays Pokemon for the monster designs themselves, I actually kinda donât like it. No, not because Mega designs are bad, but because they completely trump the designs they evolve from. For example, Mawile isnât just âMawileâ anymore. Itâs more of a âNot-mega Mawile.â It feels so much less complete now that it has a form on top of it that isnât permanent. Same goes for starters like Sceptile, who feels kind of boring compared to its Mega. It always sucks when a Pokemon you like evolves into something you donât like (Popplio for me) and you have to deal with the fact that, even if you like a Pokemon, you arenât supposed to keep it like that, and itâs brought down because of it. I mean, I guess this is all just personal. Obviously itâs easy to like an early evolution, but it feels so much better to like a final evolution. Since Megas are both temporary in battle, not available outside of battle, and limited to the very late game usually, liking a Mega feels kinda pointless for in-game purposes, where you interact with your Pokemon the most. Plus, for Pokemon like Mawile, youâre using an âincompleteâ Pokemon for as long as you donât have the right Mega stone. Itâs obviously fine when all your other Pokemon are incomplete as well, but yeah⊠Just kinda sucks sometimes. Plus, anything achieved by Mega Evolutions could just as easily be achieved by normal evolutions. The only issue is Pokemon like Beedrill not being able to evolve again, and Pokemon like the starters or legendaries who are already too good to get another stage. I feel like weak, 3rd stage Pokemon like Beedrill deserve that kind of treatment the most, but no one else. If they can evolve normally, evolve them normally, and if theyâre already too good, just let them be.
Then thereâs Z-moves, which solves one problem of Mega-Evolution: All Pokemon can get involved. No matter what, your Pokemon can unleash super cool but sometimes questionably named moves. And, apart from new animations, the special Z-moves arenât so insanely preferable to the normal ones. Itâs cool, but if every Pokemon gets to use them, it kinda gets old after a while. Also, itâs a one-time use, so if you fuck it up itâs wasted. Itâs definitely not perfect, but I will say I love the special Z-move animations, mainly because itâs not just Pokemon doing stock animations for a quick little attack. They animated that Pokemon specifically for this attack, which is basically a cutscene, and it always looks better. It is a bit strange, though, that even though Z-moves are seemingly named after Zygarde, it doesnât even get a special Z-move of its own. That dude really got the shaft when it comes to 3rd legend attention...
Now we have Dynamax and Gigantamax. I just want to say that, when it first was revealed that you can turn your Pokemon into Kaiju I was extremely hyped. More hyped than I had any right to be. Considering nothing else, Dynamax definitely is the winner in terms of visual concept. Not only does it just look cool, but I love how Gym stadiums are designed specifically to accommodate them. Itâs a nice touch of worldbuilding (even though itâs basically necessary). Unfortunately⊠Itâs easily the Jack of all trades, master of none in terms of gameplay. Itâs like Mega Evolution in how you change the appearance and power of your Pokemon, and itâs like Z-moves because they have super powerful moves with special effects. Sounds alright I guess, but I really just wish they kept the previous two gimmicks instead of just making a new one that checks them both off. Also, Gigantamax actually annoys me. They try to make it seem like your Pokemon changes, but the vast majority of them either look worse or hardly change at all. Specifically, Copperaja looks like an absolute joke, even though normal Copperaja is one of my favorites of the region. But, ones like Hatterene, Corviknight, Garbodor, and Grimmsnarl hardly look any different at all. Even Appultun and Flapple have the exact same Gigantamax. Who cares? Even their moves have almost exactly the same animations as their typeâs counterparts, with a slightly different particle effect. Itâs so much less interesting than they make it seem, and it has all the problems of liking Megas over their base, but worse, since theyâre more temporary and only allowed in certain areas. Plus, Gigantamax isnât even a thing possible with all members of a single species. Obviously now theyâre introducing a way to change that, but at that point why not just do it Mega style? Itâs not even that much better, but thereâs so much more work in it. Itâs like less rare shinies. It did bring about a decent event in the games, those being the Max Raid Battles, which both have good rewards and good challenge to them. I donât have friends so they suck for me, but with friends it looks awesome.
I feel like the worst part is that they probably are just going to retcon these gimmicks in the future, like they did with the Pokedex. It makes sense, but each thing was made to be such a massive deal in their respective regions, it feels lame that theyâre just gone now.Â
But, oh my god. You have no idea. Regional Variants are the best thing to happen to Pokemon since, I dunno, whatever. Theyâre amazing, and something that should never leave the franchise ever. Like a Kantonian form more than an Alolan form? Sure. Itâs still there with all its power, it just has a different style in this region. That is not only biologically logical, but it brings back interest in a Pokemon without outclassing the classics. Plus, now it feels like every single Pokemon has a possibility to shine that is both permanent and preserving of the original. I just canât get enough of it. Then Sword and Shield introduced the idea of Regional Evolutions, which can be both plain evolutions and split evolutions from the normal form like with Cofagrigus and Runerigus, meaning the possibilities are endless. Then, even further, regional LEGENDARIES. It doesnât make sense lore-wise but who cares, the new birds look awesome as all hell and I actually like them now. Itâs so perfect, I donât want anything more than this in future games. I would kill for some Sinnoh variants of post-gen 4 Pokemon in the remakes. Hell, I hope Sinnoh gets revamped with a ton of different options across the later generations so it feels significantly different from the originals.Â
As for things like Primal Reversion, I honestly donât even know. Itâs even less significant than Gigantamax, but since it has more interesting lore Iâm sort of fine with it. I do hope they use it for other legends too, especially since Palkia and Dialga are just asking for it, with their respective orbs, and Dialga already having the âPrimalâ title elsewhere. And yes, I know heâs called âDark Dialgaâ in Japanese.Â
If I may be so bold, I think a neat gimmick that can be both unique, interesting, and completely alter the strategies of battle, would be some sort of temporary type inversion. That is, everything going out of and coming into the inverted Pokemon will have reverse effectiveness. Itâs like the fringe little Inverse battle you can go through in X/Y, but turned into a mechanic thatâs inserted into normal battles. Visually, it would give the Pokemon a negative look, as in inverting their colors and shading. I donât see how this could single out certain Pokemon in a special way, like with a form change or anything, but maybe there could be one specific Pokemon that has an ability that does something special when it inverts. Maybe items could be made for a special use too. I was sort of half-using it for a fan region Iâm half-devoted to that will likely not be a full fledged idea, but I do like it.
Roadblocks/HMs:
Iâm entirely fine with the way things are now, where you just get the HMs as key items you use whenever you want, but I can sympathize with the small contingent of people who like using their Pokemon to traverse the world, instead of anything else. I definitely think anyone who prefers HMs beyond that reason is an absolute lunatic, but I think there is some sort of a point to be made, and I think a combo of Let's Go and Sun and Moon have the answer. It is so much more fun to ride your Pokemon around than it is to get a bike (and put on some seriously ugly clothing, mind you), and I think Let's Go with giving you the option to ride your Pokemon instead of using a bike is seriously fun. I used a Rapidash almost exclusively for that purpose in my run of that game. Who the hell wouldnât want to ride a Rapidash, assuming you werenât going to catch fire? Plus, itâs YOUR Rapidash. Ride Pokemon in Sun and Moon were still pretty good, because they served functions you wouldnât normally expect from HMs, like Tauros being both your bike replacement and Rock Smash, while Stoutland is a dowsing rod. It does get a bit weird when you ârideâ a Machamp just so it can push rocks for you, but itâs better than forcing you to teach one of your team members a normal type move at the very end of the game since you absolutely need it to move on, and having to keep it until you can fly back to the move deleter. Honestly, if you could just delete HMs on the fly, they would be so much more acceptable. Still would be worse than what we have now tho.
Basically, I think Pokemon should have inherent HM abilities in them. That is, every single Tauros you catch can smash rocks, and every single Machamp you catch can push rocks. Each Pokemon would either be capable or incapable of a task, and you only need that species to go through it. That way, youâre both using your own Pokemon, while also not limiting their moves. It also makes it easy to tell why birds like Starly shouldnât be able to carry you and fly you around, while birds like Staraptor can. I also think any road blocks using Rock Smash or Cut should be entirely optional, and for secrets only. In order to make Fly a limited option, maybe only fully evolved Fly-logical Pokemon can use it, so you canât just fly somewhere in the early game. But, another thing: if you can fly early, so what? Itâs not like you get extra options, you only can go back to places youâve already been to. Even though it doesnât make sense logically, itâs a very fair piece of game design that really doesnât have a super obvious reason why itâs limited to the middle few gyms. If you have a strong bird that can pick you up, you obviously worked enough to get some convenience.Â
But then, what would be a roadblock to keep you from going too far? A horde of dancing men? Honestly, thatâs just one of those things fixed by my open world idea. Maybe some areas can be super strong so as to tell you that you shouldnât be there, and maybe implement the idea of the Wild Area where you canât catch the strong-looking Pokemon, but apart from that make most of the world scale up with you. Surely some areas would be slightly higher leveled then the rest, though, for the sake of variety. The Wild area does get a bit stale when literally everything you encounter is exactly lvl 60. Obviously there could be some pointless story-focused roadblocks that only clear when you progress, because that is how it is in real life. You canât just walk into some businessâ office unless you have business there. Of course, you canât exactly walk into random strangersâ houses either, but still.Â
I do want to praise ORAS again because the Soar feature with the Latis was extremely cool. It was like Ride Pokemon but using the objectively coolest possible HM to control. If they sort of nerfed the Fly mechanic and made it so you did have to ride your Pokemon and fly them there like the Latis I wouldn't mind that at all. Although, surely some other people would...
Other Bits:
- I still think that, even though having every Pokemon in the game would be great, I think if it can improve the game elsewhere I wouldnât mind them saving some space. The problem is that Sword and Shield really wasnât the best way to suggest it would vastly improve anything. Iâve gone on ad nauseam elsewhere about that so bleh
- I love seeing Pokemon in the overworld. I do think it would benefit from the Letâs Go treatment, where you can at least see if a Pokemon is shiny or not. Either way, it gives them so much more personality, like how some charge head-first at you while some walk up and casually examine you.
- I donât really care too much about Pokemon following you to be honest. It would obviously be preferred over the alternative, but Iâm not gonna riot if it doesnât happen. It did give a lot of personality I didnât expect in Lets Go, like Bellsprout being so darn speedy.
- I could probably make a whole nother giant rant about the overall designs of Pokemon but needless to say Iâm fine with it overall. I do sort of wish theyâd do something else with the starters though, since I havenât genuinely loved a starter since Gen 4. Honestly Chesnaught was pretty close, but I still get the urge to replace him with something more interesting. Outside of them, though, I think things are going good. Some are duds, but some are bangers like Corvinight, Grimmsnarl, Hatterene, Frosmoth, and a bunch of others which I could easily list but this is supposed to be succinct comments so
- There definitely has to be some sort of endgame content, but everyone already knows that. Seriously though, what if the colosseums from PBR become the replacement Battle Frontier? That would be dope. Although the normal Battle Frontier would be fine too, I guessâŠ
- PBR PBR PBR. PBR is great for itâs realistic sizes of Pokemon. If youâre going to use full-size models of humans, the Pokemon should match. Or, at least make it a little more true to reality. Yes, Wailord is too damn small.

Since you have a ton of pairings, what about just listing one alternate pair for each main or side characters, I really want to see what you have thought up

Well, letâs go through some, then.Â
Greninja/Samurott - Ninja and samurai pairing, very obvious. Given how Iâve written the characters out, they actually wouldâve complemented each other quite nicely. Hence the (mostly) one-sided attraction.Â
Chesnaught/Incineroar - Several instances of fan art with these two together have endeared me to the concept. If Chesnaught werenât the main character, he wouldâve had time to wait for a love interest and probably ended up with an Incineroar character. Otherwise, heâd have probably ended up with Lilligant, which mightâve been noteworthy, but boring in my mind.Â
Nidoking/Nidoqueen - Itâs technically canon, but very clearly not in focus (yet). Itâs a typical pair that lots of people see and accept, so I might have honestly gone with that if I avoided Nidoqueenâs tragedy. Rhydon wouldâve been a very lonely character as a result.Â
Rhydon/Tyranitar or Rhydon/Aggron - These are cute when not based on my fanfics, so Iâd have liked including one or the other. Sad reality is, if Rhydon wasnât with Nidoking, heâd be with someone that reminded him enough of his king, at least by appearance, and these two would relate well enough.Â
Typhlosion/Feraligatr - Kind of speaks for itself given its popularity, no? Iâm a sucker for the two as well. Bonus points, because theyâre usually paired off as males as well, so itâd be a common gay pairing to include. Theyâd probably have been entirely different characters, though.Â
Gardevoir/Froslass - Boy oh boy do I feel like I dropped the ball on giving Froslass a solid girlfriend, let me tell you. Also, if Nidoking had been straight, Gardevoir probably wouldâve gotten a push to be gay.Â
Gallade/Bisharp - Knight boyfriends, probably. Theyâd be drastically different from how they were developed, obviously.Â
Escavalier/Sirfetchâd - This is a very recent development, but I absolutely love that Gen 8 gave me this for indulgence.Â
Accelgor/Kricketune - Honestly, I just kind of like the idea of Kricketune as some wealthy character that wouldâve had a loyal bodyguard. That very much did not happen, but this pairing wouldâve been possible had Kricketune been written that way. Originally bounced between Accelgor and Escavalier for the bodyguard, but Sirfetchâd got rid of that debate, lmao.Â
Lilligant/Tsareena - Someone pointed this couple out to me, and the only reason itâs not going to happen is because I had a partner planned for Lilligant prior to Gen 7, and going back on that wouldâve been annoying.Â
Scizor/Ledian - Prior plans had me toy with this one, and I used to like this pairing when I was younger, since both were red bugs and I had figures of them that fit together nicely. Theyâre no longer going to be a couple, so I guess I can reveal that?Â
Heracross/Pinsir - I donât have any plans to use Pinsir, but Iâve had a soft spot for one being a potential partner to a Heracross. Wouldâve been a nice minor couple, but Heracross will have a different partner in the next story.Â
Sceptile/Blaziken - Mentioned them before, but I wouldâve picked these two together if I hadnât decided on pairing Blaziken with Swampert. Theyâd have been a very, umâŠwell, if you like how Nidoking flirts with Rhydon, that. Swampert tempers the two, which I liked better.Â
Hitmonchan/Mr. Mine - I canât explain this one very well at all, honestly. I like these two together for some weird reason. Fighting/Psychic is a particular weakness of mine, and Iâve pondered over these two. Wouldâve been hilarious, having a fashion fanatic dating a shadier merchant.Â
Alakazam/Hypno - Blleeeugh, I donât like considering Alakazam with anyone besides Machamp. But, I have considered this couple outside of my fanfics, so, had Hypno turned out differently, he probably couldâve been a love interest for Alakazam instead of a minor villain. OrâŠwell, thatâs a spoiler.Â
Machamp/Conkeldurr or Machamp/Sawk - Honestly wouldâve just been compensating for Alakazam not being with Machamp. These two have been compared before, so Iâve thought of them as a couple, and Iâm probably not alone. Machamp tends to have flexibility for potential love interests, since human-shaped dude, so heâd have more options. Wouldâve probably gone with Sawk in all honesty, or Hitmonchan if he were available.Â
Empoleon/Blastoise - Infinitely less enchanting than what I came up with for Blastoise and Carracosta. Empoleon mightâve benefited from taking that role instead, but then Carracosta wouldâve ended up alone for the current story.Â
Carracosta/Floatzel - Aqua Jetters. Definitely not a pairing that Iâve seen, but itâs one that Iâve thought up (maybe like once myself). I just fell so hard for Carracosta being with Blastoise and never really looked back.Â
Weavile/Lopunny - Dark girl plus pretty girl, and Iâd have shamelessly run with that one outright. âŠOk maybe not shameless, but Iâd have made you like them.Â
Golduck/Ludicolo - No lie, I had little to no intention of using Ludicolo, but I like the idea of one with a Golduck, because they seem like a cool/cute pairing. Wouldâve absolutely leaned into that, and Golduck probably wouldnât have had any history with Greninja were that the case, because theyâd be a wholesome couple and I canât imagine Ludicolo not being cute.Â
Mienshao/Lucario - This one is probably more common than I realize, but I donât see people making much for male Mienshao in general, so itâs probably non-existent for gay content.Â
Delibird/Politoed - Ok, so, I think these two are pretty cute, and thatâs out of nowhere, I know. But, I donât know, I like them as a Gen 2 specific pairing, with Slowking rotating out for either of them as well. If I had focused on developing them a lot more, they probably couldâve been a canon couple. Thankfully, Delibird avoided that heartbreak.Â
Poliwrath/Primeape - Big fist boys. Another one that wouldâve made no sense for the story, but itâs a couple that I do like. Had I wanted to give Poliwrath a partner, Primeape wouldâve been like a reformed bandit up north with him. Too bad they didnât get to be a coupleâŠor get happy endings.Â
Pangoro/Krookodile - Donât think Iâve ever seen this one before, and I like the idea of it! Theyâd be bad boyfriends, lol. Pretty sure if I included this for the fanfic, theyâd have been villainous characters. How fortunate for them that I didnât go that route, ha.Â
Ursaring/Slaking - Lazy time boyfriends. Hadnât really thought of Ursaring not being with a bear when I wrote him up, but Iâve grown to like this pairing after considering him with non-bear characters.Â
Beartic/Abomasnow - Fun fact: I totally did NOT pay attention to Bearticâs canon size, and that heâs supposed to tower over Pandora and Ursaring. If I had, he wouldâve been Abomasnowâs boyfriend. Plus, great white ice monsters.Â
Flygon/Garchomp - Itâs being played with, but I wouldâve put these two together were it not forâŠreasons.Â
Zoroark/Zangoose - Does anyone like this pairing??? Iâve thought it up like once or twice, so not that Iâd be a major supporter, but they seem like a valid couple. Yet, Iâve only seen Zoroark consistently paired with Lucario and Lycanroc, so, whatâs up with that? These two would be an easy one.Â
Lucario/Toxicroak - This is a very quiet pairing that I came up with solely based on Pokedex proximity, where I looked at two Pokemon close on the Pokedex and went, âyeah, they could be a couple.â (It worked best for Alakazam and Machamp, I know.) I donât think I wouldâve seriously considered them as a couple, especially because Lucario has loads of other options, but I figured it would be a funny one to share.Â
Others to Note:Â
Delphox - Iâve got spoiler plans for Delphox, but had I not come up with the idea that I had for him, he wouldâve gotten a solid partner. Itâll be very clear who Iâd have picked personally for him, but thatâsâŠwell, Iâll get to it in the future.Â
Golurk - Another instance of me not paying attention to canon Pokemon sizes. I originally goofed with a Golurk being paired up with a Hitmonchan, because mini-skirts that arenât skirts, but now that I know Golurkâs canon size, whoops. Itâs good, because their current characters wouldnât make sense together.Â
Quagsire - I actually like Quagsire with some weird picks, such as Granbull, Gastrodon, Swampert, Goodra, or Ampharos. But my fanfic Quagsire was never meant to be paired with anyone.Â
Yeah, I could keep going for a lot of these, though they would be rather lopsided in who gets lots of pairings and who doesnât.Â

*Disclaimer* I do not hate Pikachu if it sounds like Iâm dissing Pikachu. Pikachu is one of my favorite PokĂ©mon. Objective here is to give Pikachuâs older sibling some much needed love.
Several months ago, I came across an article by The Gamer, in my Facebook feed and the title was, â25 Awesome Things Fans Forgot About Pokemon*â (link will be at the end of this post, I have put it on Tumblr before but I donât think the articles I post have been that popular). I thought to myself, âWell this looks interesting, Iâm gonna read it.â When I got toward the end of it, I noticed a fact that just about reduced me to tears. The number one fact was simply this, Raichu Exists. Ouch. If any gen 1 PokĂ©mon is underappreciated, its Raichu. Does the PokĂ©mon company hate Raichu?
This instilled in me a new found love for Raichu. A few years back when XY BreakThrough came out, I bought the Burning Spark theme deck featuring Raichu because the box art was nice and I liked the artwork on the card. Now, I am trying to get two decks ready to go for Tekko that are built around Raichu. One for the standard format (Raichu GX) and one for expanded format (Raichu Break). Just trying to show Raichu some love hereâŠanyway back to how Raichu is underappreciated and overshadowed.
Right from the get go, Raichu has been forgotten. Pikachu was made the adorable mascot of the PokĂ©mon Franchise. The first impression you get of Raichu, is in the opening theme of the anime when Ashâs Pikachu faces off against Lt. Surgeâs Raichu (which I believe has been characterized as a jerk RaichuâŠ). So right off the bat, fans have a negative image of Raichu because he kicked Ashâs Pikachuâs butt in a fight. In the PokĂ©mon video games (please anyone correct me if I am wrong, for I have never played the video games, I only know what I read about them), if Pikachu is your starter, it wonât evolve into itâs more powerful, older sibling Raichu. However, I have also read that if you happen to like Pikachu better than Raichu, itâs not recommended that you evolve your Pikachu until toward the end of the game for the sake of completing the dex. From an outsider who hasnât had much experience with the games, to me that seems a little sad, because before the Light Ball, Raichu was the better pick for your team. However even if Pikachu had the **Light Ball, it does not get a speed boost, just an attack boost, so given that, Raichu is still faster. A little later, is a side-by-side comparison of their base statistics. When generation 6 dropped for PokĂ©mon, a cool, new type of evolution was introduced to the gameplayâŠ.mega evolutions. Raichu got snubbed of a mega evolution and yet Iâve seen so many fakemon/fanart designs for a mega Raichu, that actually look pretty epic. And some of them actually look like what would have been Raichuâs older sibling, Gorochu.
That said, when generation 7 rolled around an interesting and new form for certain PokĂ©mon (mostly gen 1 PokĂ©mon), were Alola forms. Raichu finally gets some love? Perhaps. He did get blessed with an adorable Alolan formâŠ.with dual typing may addâŠelectric and psychic typing. I still have yet to see an Alolan Raichu GX card and I still have yet to see Alolan Raichu printed as a psychic type. With gen 8 starters having been dropped recently, I think my wishes for that are slim to none.

I recently read that the PokĂ©mon company has made Pikachu more viable as an attacker via an item called, âLight Ballâ which to my understanding is an item that only a  Pikachu can weild (to me that begs the question, why? Why can only a Pikachu wield the Light Ball?). It raises special attack and attack stats and therefore makes it slightly better than Raichu overall. At least that is my understanding of how the item works. I have also read that in Gen 3, I believe, that Pikachu beat a Raichu with Light Ball, however it doesnât stand a chance now against Alolan Raichu. In the PokĂ©mon tcg, Raichu has gotten the short end of the stick. And while I donât know much about how the tcg started back in Base Set, however from about DPP on, I can tell you a bit there because I follow a lovely blog called, @pokemon-card-of-the-day  and they have done a wonderful job of shedding light on how the tcg has evolved over timeâŠ.Please check their blog out, its awesome! Anyway I digress..back to Raichu. To my knowledge and understanding, I donât think that Raichu has been part of any top cut/competitive deck until now. And for various reasons I suppose. With all the electric support running around in the current format (pun intended), and the Shining Legends Raichu GX, somebody wants my boy to win. Of course, from experience, the most viable Raichu GX deck is the Snuggly Generator variant, not Raichu x Magnezone variant (too bulky). I hope Snuggly Generator Raichu GX somehow goes to Worldâs this year. I really do.
Raichu to my knowledge has been printed in half or less than half (Bulbagarden article said 43 different cards I thinkâŠ) of the sets that Pikachu has been released in, and yet, Raichu has had some beautiful card artwork. Several examples come to mind when I think of all the lovely artwork featuring Raichu. Base Set Raichu comes to mind, he just looks so happy. Another example is Expedition Base Set Raichu, the holo with the stars and Raichu, again looks very happy. Or how about the artwork for Raichu in the Black and White Next Destinies set? He is walking down a street with balloons looking perfectly happyâŠor how about a throwback to some of the first EX cards released? Raichu was fortunate enough to get 2 different EX cards with beautiful artwork. For my last, and slightly more recent example, take the Radiant Collection Raichu from the XY Generations set, itâs just plain adorableâŠ.and yet he isnât popular. That begs the questionâŠ.why? Raichu has had some awesome artwork in the tcgâŠso many gorgeous cards Imo.
Raichu, you are a the goodest of boiâs and deserve a ton of love! Thank you for existing. You are absolutely adorable. Thank you to something wonderful I recently discovered on Tumblr; PokĂ©ganda blogsâŠI discovered two for Raichu! Thank you @raichu-propaganda and @raichupropaganda for showing Raichu some love! :)Â

The final stretch before playoffs has begun and there are several teams fighting for their shot at playoffs

This week brought some surprises and some very close games. There are no longer any teams that are undefeated after this week which means the pressure for a perfect season is off and now the fun can really begin. These games are very close and everyone has a chance to have a strong finish to the season, but lets jump into the playoff picture and how the teams can make playoffs

There are so many varients of how this can go im only going to cover how each team can hit number 1 and get the first round bye

BAL: win out = 2nd in division unless record tied with MID then 1
MIN: to get first win out, MID loses 2, BAL loses 1 and MIL loses 1
DCC: to get first win out, MID loses 2, MIN loses 1
MIL: to get frist win out, MID lose out, and DCC loses 1
AUK needs to win out get to 7-5 based off breakers it is very likely that 6-6 will not be good enough to make playoffs for AUK
To show how crazy this can get, after the next two weeks the rhyhorn steakhouse could have 5 teams with a 8-3 record. That would make it where a best of the rest team could have a better record than some of the divisional teams. This goes to show that the Rhyhorn steakhouse is not to be trifled with.
Trades
With only 2 weeks left for trades everyone seems to be slowing down as we only 1 trade this week

 The Salt Lake Combees trade Landorus-T to the Detroit Pyroars for Zygarde 50%. I think this can benefit both teams as they are trading 1 monster in the format for another. Both have a 4x ice weakness and can set up so there isnt much difference other than the utility of each mon which is up to the coaches to utilize.
Power Rankings with Geo
This is the last Power Rankings before the season ends and we make our final rankings so give it your all in the next 3 weeks and you might make your way into the top 10.

 There have been a lot of teams that have proved themselves over the past few weeks. DCC started 0-3 and is now 6-3 and near the top of the standings. This only goes to show that the season ends only when you give up and with hard work and determination you can make a difference and climb the ladder to the top of the league. This is just one success story of how teams are improving and that no one should be counted out until the final mon goes down. Keep up the good work and we will see you next week.
Interview with The Seth Vilo
This week Iâm joined by the stall master himself Seth Vilo!
Clod9: Thank you Seth Vilo for joining us this week. Letâs start at the beginning: how did you prepare for this draft?
Seth Vilo: I prepared by doing thorough planning about this seasonâs evil plans. How would I change up my normal team strategy and keep it interesting? How could I resurrect Gen IV teams I had made so long ago? I had the plan ready for Draft Day, only to watch as the linchpins of Flygon and Scizor were taken from my evil grasp. Soooo I reverted to my normal team style with a couple fun new things. In picking the S-tier, I looked up at my girlfriend who was already bored of me staring at a computer for hours drafting, and asked âshould I take the fluffy Dragon, or the jet plane Dragon?â So thatâs how I started with Mega-Altaria. âPrepâ.
C9: Has your team performed up to your standards so far?
SV: Yes and no. I had a lot of fun with it, which is what I was going for. Other than my battle against the utterly terrifying Fack Luigi, I never felt completely unprepared. There was always a way to wriggle out of something. My wave of trades the other week was just my mood shifting; I just really, really wanted to use Latias and Breloom all of a sudden and found a way how. Iâm excited to see how they do in the last 3 battles!
C9: With only 3 games to go how do you think you will fare?
SV: I think Iâll do decently! As I write this, Iâm pondering how to prep against you, actually, which is my next battle at time of writing. With a few losses under my belt, I feel a lot less pressure on myself to do well, and can have more fun. Itâs almost freeing, and Iâm really excited!!
C9: Who are/were you most looking forward to battling this season? SV: Goodness, Iâm gunna sounds like a suck-up but I really just enjoy battling anyone Iâm matched up with! Newer players and older players alike, I just like having fun. That being said, I am excited to exact my revenge on ZcronâŠ
 C9: I know Iâm looking forward to battling you this week,  are there any hints you want to give the readers about our match up? SV: THE EON TWIN SHOWDOWN! Who will come out on top?? PLAAAACE YOUR BETS! But in all seriousness, Iâm hoping to pull a couple secret fun ideas out of my bag of evil tricks [evil laugh].
C9: Where were/are you least looking forward to battling this season?
SV: Oh, so many people⊠Namely: anyone in my division, my inconsistent Wifi, the battery on my 3DS that I had to replace, even myself on what Silvally to pick this week. Did I mention my whole division? Cause my whole division. RHYHORN STEAKHOUSE!!!!
 C9: Why did you choose the team name, Miami Lanturns? SV: Here we go! I was Googling team names I could manipulate back in Season 1. I stumbled upon the Miami Dolphins logo, and with my newfound Photoshop skills took on the project of replacing the dolphin with a favorite of mine, Lanturn. I did that, and here we are! The logo youâre seeing was redone by the amazing Ozzy, cause mine wasâŠ. Too close to the original to put on a shirt.
C9: Were there any secret techs that you brought for your matchups that you didnât get to showcase? SV: There were a few scattered here and there of me trying to be super clever. I had a Rowap + Rain Dance Milotic against Fack Luigi, Ditto strategy in general, and even random Mirror Coat and Magic Coat on some sneaky things. Often, Silvally is my tech I bring that is least used, which is actually physically painful to type as thatâs my second favorite Pokemon.
C9: Who would you say is the mon you are most excited to use on your team this year? SV: Well, given I made a billion trades the other week, right now Iâd answer this question with Latias and Breloom. They are another two of my favorites and Iâm super excited to find fun ways to play them. Whatâs that? Why yes I completed that âFavorite of Each Typeâ chart recently and thatâs how I know this, thanks for asking!
C9: You are currently in the most brutal division with 5 of the 6 teams still in contention for number 1. How do you think your division will end up? Where do you think you will fall?
SV: RHYHORN STEAKHOUSE REPRESENT!!!! Bow before us and tremble in fear! Even if I didnât end up contributing much except 84-turn battles⊠I think itâll be decent for the Miami Lanturns, but not as strong as Iâve done before. Both good and bad, as I said earlier. With every loss brings more memesâŠ
C9: Letâs learn about you as a Pokemon Fan. When did you start listening to PUCL?
SV: I started listening to PUCL in about February of 2017. Having gotten into the TCG heavily at the time, I was looking for something else to fill the long car rides of work. I happened upon the Sun / Moon TCG Review episode, and have been hooked ever since.
C9:What Pokemon generation did you start with?
SV: Gen 1 all the way boi!! I started on a Pokemon Blue Version that I got for Christmas one year, bundled with a brand new GameBoy. The rest is history.
C9: What is your favorite region?
SV: Hoenn all the way. Kanto is boring, Johto is okay but never really stuck for me. My most formative years in Pokemon was Ruby and Sapphire. That was also when both me and my siblings could play, what with them being old enough to speak and all, so it unlocked more levels of fun (and getting my butt handed to me by my brotherâs Flygon, DARKNESS). I love the trumpets, I love the color, I love the plants, I LOVE THE WATER, and I love the pokemon introduced. #GEN3BESTGEN
C9: Who is your favorite Pokemon?
SV: Sableye all the way. Itâs the Stitch of Pokemon.
C9: If you had to pick: Attack or Special Attack?
SV: Itâs really mixed here⊠For setup, Attack all the way. The moves are so much better and more threatening. But for general nuking, (almost) nothing is better than clicking Draco Meteor and watching the opponent be reduced to a fine red mist. If I had a Remoraid to my head, Iâd probably say Special Attack.
C9: What is your battle style: Â Stall/Hyper Offense/Bulky Offense/Balance?
SV: Haha. But honestly, Iâm not the âSTALLâ player Iâm made out to be, says the defendant from the stand. My teams usually start with an endgame sweeper of some sort that is bulky (Zygarde, Latias-M, Clefable, etc), than a stupid bulky core is built around them. My end-game is always to whittle, and then sweep. But if you canât break past my defensive line and I donât have to lift a finger, thatâs fine by me!
C9: Do you prefer Speed or Trick Room?
SV: Probably Trick Room, While I like a lot of fast things, itâs not my usual style. Stakatakatakatakatakataka is really fun to use, and I like generally turning the tables Old-Manâs-Chess-Game-Before-A-Bugâs-Life style.
C9: What is your favorite Weather; Hail/Sand/Rain or Sun?
SV: Rain all the way, both in Pokemon and IRL. #BackInGen5, Rain + Volcarona was one of my favorite teams to run.
C9: Electric/Misty/Grassy or Psychic Terrain?
SV: As the Grass-type gym leader, I am contractually obligated to say Grassy Terrain. It also happens to be my favorite outside of contract.
C9: Favorite status to inflict: Sleep/Freeze/Paralysis/Burn or Poison?
SV: Thatâs a tough battle between Burn and Badly Poisoned. I love both, Poison for âstallingâ, and Burn because of its Attack-drop utility. Again with a Remoraid to my head, probably Burn.
C9: Have you watched the Pokemon anime? If yes, what is your favorite Theme song?
SV: I have watched the anime, but really need to watch it more because what Iâve seen of Sun and Moon is incredible. But question two, is that even a question? Original all the way!
C9: You are one of the Gym leaders for the PUCL Summer League, what encouraging words do you have for any potential battlers?
SV: Have fun! The Gym Leader team is all really excited to get this Summer going, and feel free to ask questions and battle again and again! The whole goal is to have fun.

PDL Week 4 Recap
This is the final week before the first bye week and teams are giving it all they have got before a well deserved week of rest.

This week the Corsola Cola Division played off against the Rhyhorn Steakhouse and lets just say that Corsola Cola canât overpower the flavor form the Rhyhorn Steakhouse. With 5 out of the 6 games going in favor of the Rhyhorn Steakhouse division. The same  outcome happened between the Green Tauros division and the Toxapepsi Division. The hooves from Green Tauros stopped the Merciless flavors of Toxapepsi in almost every match. The past 3 weeks have pinned division vs division and those matches overall were closer with the Rhyhorn Steakhouse coming out with the most wins of all the divisions thus far. Is this telling of how things will look for playoffs or is this just week 4 madness stretching across the conference. I guess we will find out soon enough.Â
I have to mention how impressed I am with how well teams are adapting to this format and improving already. A bunch of team got their first win, or made strides towards the top of the standings, with now only 3 teams left undefeated. Whatâs becoming more and more apparent is that the teams that do good prep usually come out on top. There is one match in particular that highlights how useful prep can be when your opponents donât expect something. That would be the AUK vs NWN game. Sparky! Coached his team through a difficult match up and showed why he is a force to be reckoned with this season. (If you want to see Vileplume, tied for #3 on the MVP leaderboard, sweep a team I recommend checking out the HFW vs. NJJ game.)

Pickâems
These are becoming tougher and tougher to pick correctly with the majority of teams this week with only 7 correct. However no one got a perfect week so they do not get mentioned here. The reason for that is because of the 4 Pick âem upsets. Despite COG being 3-0 ,at the top of the standings and a previous UUTC winner, the majority of picks 9 went in favor of ITA the most current UUTC winner. While this is not a traditional upset it is one in terms a pick âems. The second one comes at SHS taking down LOL with the same margin 9-4. NYY gets their first win over BLP who came off an upset win last week. Those picks were 10-3 in favor of BLP. Finally there was one person who called the BEN upset over PIP this week. Clearly and match no one saw coming.

 DCC after a rough start made some necessary changes to help improve their matchups in weeks to come by adding Aerodactyl and Reuniclus to their roster. Some fancy mon dropping in free agency allowed NYY to drop Azumarill to pick up the Tyranitar that DCC dropped and VAV picked up the Azumarill. VAV also added Meloetta dn servine to their roster which is bound to bring in new energy to the team.
Interview with Hydra
This week Iâm joined by (In my opinion, one of the better battlers in PUCL) Hydra.
C9: Thank you Hydra for taking the time to answer these questions for the fans. Being randomly selected for first pick of the draft, how did you feel about?
Hydra: Whenever I see Iâve gotten first pick in a league, thereâs always a rush of excitement due to all the options it gives for starting a draft. So, I was definitely happy that I could build a plan that didnât have to factor being sniped in round 1.
C9: How do you think that impacted your draft, if at all?
Hydra: Due to the way PDL does S-tier picks, thereâs a cost associated with picking the usual draft format no-brainers like Tapu Koko or Celesteela, and you canât just jump on one of those round 1 without consequences. Additionally, the mons I ended up desiring werenât ones I usually see taken quickly in draft format. As a result, I donât think it ultimately influenced my draft much.
C9: What are your goals for this season of PDL?
Hydra: Iâd ideally like to use all of my Pokemon to their full potential, and with a wider variety of sets. Last season I was using pokemon with more straightforward roles (also there were some Free Agency trades over an awkwardly long period of time,) and as a result there just wasnât as much variety week to week.
C9: Who are most looking forward to battling this season? Â
Hydra: Geo for sure. Going off his record he seems like a strong battler, and we may or may not have had disagreements in the past involving a flying prehistoric pokemon with facial hair.
C9: Is there anyone you are glad you donât have to face in the regular season?
Hydra: Iâd say Thatch. I faced him twice last season, and although I canât recall if it was bad plays, prep, or just an unfortunate draft matchup, I lost to him both times. So, itâs nice to not have to worry about a third match (at least until a potential comeback in season 3!)
C9: I know Iâm not looking forward to our match, week 7, but either way it should be a fun battle.
Hydra: Iâm flattered by your dread! But as long as weâre not going to fight twice in a row like we had to in the UUTC, it should be fun. Back-to-back battles arenât usually a great time, but maybe thatâs just me.
C9: Why did you choose the team name, The Norwalk Nosepass?
Hydra: Iâm glad you asked- itâs the violently creative combination of my hometown, Norwalk, and a pokemon that possesses my favorite type, Nosepass. Despite both this Connecticut town and gen 3 Pokemon lacking any noteworthy characteristics I can discern, Iâve got a fondness for both of them.
C9: Were there any secret techs that you brought for your matchups that you didnât get to showcase?
Hydra: Thereâs surprisingly already been a few. Though I did get to show off Shattered Psyche Serperior (EM Mirror Coat being the base) as a finishing move, it didnât prove to be the surprise game winner I thought it would be as my opponent didnât bring the Pokemon it was meant to break through, Amoonguss. I feel like I might end up bringing the other wacky techs again sometime soon, so Iâll keep quiet on those.
C9: Who would you say is the mon you are most excited to use on your team this year?
Hydra: Surprisingly, itâs proven to be Miltank. I wasnât terribly excited about using it at first, and simply picked it to add some bulk to my draft. But itâs been a very effective and versatile Pokemon, so much so that every week so far Iâve had reason to breed a new set on it. Makes sense considering usable stats for several roles, an expansive movepool, and three good abilities to pick from.
C9: Letâs learn about you as a pokemon Fan. When did you start listening to PUCL?
Hydra: I was really into the VGC15 meta, especially post worlds, and at the time was also expanding the amount of different podcasts I listened to quite a bit. PUCL was the only one I could find that covered the format and competitive battling overall in any meaningful sense, and Iâve been a listener since.
C9: What pokemon generation did you start with?
Hydra: For me, it started back- I mean, right around gen 4. No particularly interesting story to tell, unfortunately. Iâd been obsessed with the cards or anime from time to time, and eventually got Pearl upon hearing about from my older brother (but not yet understanding) the wonders this franchise had to offer in video game form.
C9: What is your favorite region?
Hydra: Iâd probably go with Hoenn. As far as I remember it has the most diverse locations (and did a lot of them first,) featuring volcanoes, forests, deserts, pillars that touch the sky, and just the right amount of water. Now that I think about it, Alola is probably just as diverse in terms of locations, but it needed multiple islands to get that done so Iâll stick with Hoenn.
C9: Who is your favorite pokemon?
Hydra: Hydreigon! Ever since I first saw it and its incomparably cool typing browsing Serebii while waiting for BWâs American Release, itâs been my favorite. Worth even the absolutely ridiculous grind for level 64 and a 4x weakness resulting from it being too broken in gen 5. Snorlax and Psyduck would be my honorable mentions.
C9: If you had to pick: Attack or Special Attack?
Hydra: Iâd go with Special Attack. Intimidate is gross, and moves like Psyshock or Secret Sword mean you can get the best of both worlds going with Special sometimes.
C9: What is your battle style: Â Stall/Hyper Offense/Bulky Offense/Balance?
Hydra: I generally lean Hyper Offense, simply because itâs quicker/easier to build for and battle with, which of course means more time for more battles!
C9: Do you prefer Speed or Trick Room?
Hydra: The answerâs probably obvious to anyone who battled me in the UUTC this year, but Trick Room. The setup is convoluted of course and means that youâre often better off going for straight speed in singles, but the payoff is immense when it works. Itâs usually my default strategy when trying to figure out a new VGC format as well.
C9: What is your favorite Weather; Hail/Sand/Rain or Sun?
Hydra: Definitely Hail, partly due to it being the underdog of weather conditions for so long and me being a New Englander who doesnât mind the cold weather. Hail was my favorite playstyle in the previously mentioned VGC15, as Blizzard would largely tear apart CHALK type teams if you had Heatran covered. The new tools it got in gen 7 finally put it on par with the other weather conditions too, so itâs less of an uphill battle to use it now.
C9: Electric/Misty/Grassy or Psychic Terrain?
Hydra: Grassy Terrain! I like Bulu a whole lot, and the effects of Grassy terrain lend themselves better than the other terrains to building defensive cores. Heatranâs another Pokemon I really like, and it can form an impeccable core with Bulu thanks to the three effects of Grassy Terrain that all benefit it.
C9: Favorite status to inflict: Sleep/Freeze/Paralysis/Burn or Poison?
Hydra: Paralysis for me. Even though it only cuts speed by 50% now, thatâs still enough to make most things slower than even a lot of your walls, and that 25% chance of total immobility can mean you pulling of all kinds of things you otherwise couldnât. And of course, I thought that the animation for it looked really neat in Diamond and Pearl.
C9: Have you watched the Pokemon anime? If yes, what is your favorite Theme song?
Hydra: I unfortunately havenât watched the anime in quite some time, so itâs hard to say. But, Iâve heard that a Patrat goes for a high five but gets left hanging in one of the Black and White theme songs, and that sounds fantastic to me, so Iâll go with that.
