Incoherent thoughts and rambling below.
Honestly?
This just continues to prove to me why Jean and Scott are not that great of a couple together.
I already discussed my feelings about their X-Men: Evolution counterparts, and I had been hesitant about bringing up their 616 selves, because my knowledge for them as a couple is admittedly very little beyond the general information.
And on one hand, I feel bad because Jean isn’t necessarily a terrible character, and Scott isn’t perfect, but….they really do not feel like a couple that convinces me they would be truly happy together.
It might have been possible in Rachel Summer’s original timeline, as well as Chris Claremount’s earliest intent to have them marry and retire, but now?
Even then outside of those specific plot lines?
As noble and pure their feelings might have been in the beginning, their relationship comes across as toxic, ESPECIALLY on Jean’s part.
If one of Scott’s concerns involves the world’s relationship with mutantkind, Jean’s unhappy because he isn’t prioritizing their marriage 100% in her eyes.
Yet when he does want to focus on just him and Jean and let someone else take charge, suddenly they can’t afford to be ‘selfish.’
If Scott wants a slow-paced, take your time kind of moments to bond with his wife before she leaves for who knows how long, poor Jean feels like she’s suffocating because he’s not ‘letting her’ read his mind (aka putting boundaries) /conjure up stuff/phoenix stuff / ‘quick shortcuts and solutions’/etc.
I remember how devastated and frustrated Jean was initially in the beginning when Scott kept viewing her and the Phoenix as one and the same, but now she’s not happy with him because he prefers her to not do phoenix-related stuff—which again, I can see why that is a problem on Scott’s part and not just hers, but AGAIN again, more proof as to why I cannot agree with Marvel insisting that they are one of if not the IT couples for X-Men.
I acknowledge again that my understanding of Jean Grey is very limited. Therefore my takes are not exactly fair.
She DOES sacrifice herself for love and the greater good several times….but a few of those moments I feel like are done to retcon some of her less savory decisions (like the Phoenix originally being her full potential but was rewritten is a cosmic all knowing being who somehow got mind-manipulated by another mutant because infinite power and potential somehow does not make its hormones immune to flashes of nonconsensual, mental 17th century style role playing. Birdbrain.) or to give her Madelyne’s role of being both a mother to Nathaniel and wife of Scott (you cannot convince me Maddie wouldn’t have been more than happy than to help raise her own son in the future.)
If I didn’t know better and was one of the writers of Marvel, I would have explained Scott’s imperfect but ultimate devotion to Jean as Jean subtly manipulating his mind so that even though he has the potential to move on and find genuine romance outside his adoration for Jean*, he will always think of her and come back to her at the end of the day unless she has other plans because SHE cannot let go of HIM.
*Based on their respective romantic relationships outside of each other, Scott is clearly luckier, while she isn’t.
Scott: Colleen Wing, Lee Forrester, Madelyne, Betsy/Kwannon, Carol Danvers (Canon AU; Non 616 ), Emma Frost (as weird as it may be considering how it started 😨), Frenzy/Joanna Cargill, Maria Hill (never happened but she DID have a crush on him), Laura Kinney (let’s be real; of all the wolverines some fans want to see Cyclops get together with, Teen!Scott and Laura made the most sense to me), Taryn Fujioka (X-Men:Evo), Rogue (X-Men: Evolution; y’all who know me already know how I feel about these two 🥰), Officially Betsy Braddock (canon AU), even STORM in an AU made sense!
Jean: a semi one-sided thing with Warren…Logan/Wolverine…that one time Professor X had a crush on her (🤮)…Hank at one point, some npc dude during college years…Mastermind (🤮)…Duncan Matthews (X-Men:Evo)…Legion (X-Men:Evo…maybe. Idk)
…poor Jean. No wonder she can’t really let go of Scott. He’s the best option she could ask for….while considering some of his options, he clearly could do better than her.
Remember when their younger selves got pulled into the future and she decided that she didn’t want to be involved with him anymore? Trying to get with Hank instead as soon as she learned from H’s older self he had a crush on her? Only to get upset when younger Scott started to get along pretty well with Laura/X-23 before writers decided Teen Scott should not be interested in other girls besides Jean and dropped that plot by constantly moving him elsewhere?
That’s why any relationship he has outside of the 616 universe that ISN’T Jean isn’t considered true canon. (In Ultimate, she was his SECOND choice bc Lorna/Polaris for whatever reason left him for Alex).
Because somehow, they HAVE to work…otherwise, Jean has nothing besides the Phoenix to give her character much to do.
And as we have seen based on attempts to separate her from the cosmic entity,…616 Jean Grey is nothing without the Phoenix.
And if you have the character of the only original female member of the 616 X-Men unable to progress much as her own person unless she’s tied to either or both Scott Summers and the Phoenix in any shape or form….what then?
This is why out of all Jean Greys, X-Men: Evolution’s take is comparatively the best. She’s not perfect by a long shot, but she is the more well-written than 616’s Jean in my eyes.
