One last unpopular opinion cause I need to get it out. tell me if I’m wrong pls. Whitewashing POC characters is 100% wrong. Why is it okay to change the race or ethnicity of a POC character? I’m talking about stuff where one of the characters isn’t Japanese anymore and they’re mostly black or occasionally some other race. If they’re making a dark skinned Japanese version I get that. But why change race/ethnicity. Isn’t that wrong too? What’s your opinion on this? Not trying to start shit I swear

I guess... hm, I will try to break down my thoughts and opinions on this. i’m not claiming i’m right, i’m merely stating this as someone who literally over thinks literally everything and anything I can. please let me know if i’ve said anything wrong or offensive as i’d like to correct it because i’m not trying to offend anyone here.

when it comes to anime specifically, westerners have this very quick ability to start saying that these characters are white. as we are all damn well aware, anime is created mostly by asian creators (japanese creators to be exact) and are often depicted to be happening in japan or in some fantasy land where terms like white, black, asian reallt don’t apply. there are some anime that take place in america, & we have anime like yuuri on ice that has multiple different countries represented, but i’d say for the most part all characters are japanese.

issues come into play when, typically seen as white people on twitter who are able to pass easily as anime characters appearance simply due to skin tone color and hair color. personally, I think anime tends to throw in funky hairstyles and hair colors and eye colors not because they’re trying to claim characters as white but because japan is a largely homogeneous country and with that they tend to have similar attributes (in which I mean hair type, eye color, and hair color). the lack of color diversity can lead media to look especially dull, for lack of better words, so mangaka & anime creators make these characters have every colored hair, eyes, and sometimes make them bipoc in the world and hair type to create visual contrast, engagement, and highlight important characters.

however, we westerners are quite self centered & think if a japanese character has blonde hair and blue eyes it makes them white! meaning that should white people cosplay this blonde hair and blue eyes character it’s okay! and due to racism, whenever poc individuals — especially black cosplayers — attempt their own version, they’re attacked with how the character isn’t whatever race the cosplayer is and are overall scum bags. the character isn’t even white the mass majority of the time either so I don’t understand the anger they have over that detail except they’re racist pigs.

now, about the race bending, I think it’s because we westerners want to see ourselves within these characters. they’re like headcanons, if you will. just like you might headcanon bakugou to eventually become hard of hearing or deaf, or how you headcanon that midoriya izuku will lose all his limbs and need a robot arm and legs, these are just personal headcanons that make the character more tuned to how everyone wishes them to be.

now this is a western issue so i speak largely for america.

the underlying issue, I think, is racism. white people, whether they like it or not, have a social advantage over everyone. things will always sort of be for them, look like them, accept them. white people will never have to wonder if the newest movie coming out will have a poc lead because they tend to have it be white people. white people never have to worry about if their foundation color is in stock or even exists in the first place because the system makes it so that it’s there for them, or if not, it’s just two blocks away. white people don’t have to worry about if they will see a face that looks like them on all forms of media because european standards are whats it. we are curated in a society where we should want the lighter hair, the lighter skin, the lighter eyes, the button nose, and thin figure. & I understand that beauty standards and ideas are shifting, but if you’re unable to see that people used to shame, put down, and harass other people for having such traits before (and even still right now harass people for having the features they want as well), I guess you’re one of the naive few.

now, because in western countries, not being able to see yourself in any characters on the tv shows (with real people or animated), some people choose to simply take it into their own hands. so they take their favorite characters and decide that they’ll give it a spin to make it look like them. I don’t think anyone really bends the race and goes “damn they should really be fucking latino, what a waste they’re not!” because I really don’t think anyone’s that...intense???? that’s not the right word, but I can’t seem to find it rn. it’s simply for fun and to show other people who also don’t see themselves in these forms of media a way in!

most importantly, I think, is that when characters are turned into different ethnicities it’s other people who come out and say they’re doing it wrong & taunt them with how they would feel if they turned someone white. if i’m being especially honest, most anime characters could definitely be white in my eyes had I never known it originates from japan simply because of the way they’re drawn. they’re putting down people who are simply expanding their creativity and wanting to see a familiar face because western media continues to fail in serving its largely ethnic population.

personally, I don’t think we westerners have the right to demand more black, latino, arabic, whatever characters in anime because the fact is japan owes us nothing. we should be demanding and continuing to harass america to include poc characters because we aren’t involved in japan. (& i’m not saying that japan should just continue to serve only pure japanese characters because they do have their own intermixed population that isn’t just of japanese decent, but I think if they want us to aid their voices i’m here for it, but I won’t be the one demanding anything from a country that isn’t mine when it comes to this form of media. )

so, to me, the reason why it’s okay for poc to change the race but not white people is because racism in america lol. white people got it good on screen & the fact that it really really bothers some people is a bit scary considering the stats on how many movies and tv shows involve main white casts.

my unpopular opinion to all this, however, is I really dislike latino!sero because the spanglish people use for him makes me think that no one writing him is actually any type of latino & i’m sorta tired and a bit offended by the sexy latin lover thing. plus it sorta seems to me that my fellow latinos only use that trope because white people think it’s hot & since they carry more weight then they think; creators keep it up to seem cool or whatever idk. so it’s not my cup of tea as a mexicana 😗✌🏽

I also think when people race bend characters to other forms of poc it’s a positive expression and something done to make people happy! but typically when the characters are bent to be “white” it’s done as an attack in a way towards poc people & not done because they want to be included in a world, ya know?

2. what would you most like to do if you had 4 hours to explore a strange city?

eep! i would go to where there’s plenty of nature like gardens or the beach and just sit and admire and people watch, and then go to a cute cafe and try the local specialty and then just wander round the city without any particular destination just to Absorb It All

3. do you think classic literature is overrated?

some of it, yes definitely! i just reread jane eyre for the first time in years and i was... very underwhelmed. and also icked out at the age gap and how awful mr rochester is?? but i digress! i feel like a lot of classic literature is very beautifully written but is also very grim and not all that accessible so i’m personally not a huge fan. that said, pride and prejudice (and jane austen in general) is one of my all-time faves so ~

4. if you could learn any three language instantly, what would they be and why?

okay so i already speak arabic and french, but my arabic is nowhere near the level of fluency i want it to be, so i would love to just,,, know it properly?? (ps if anyone wants to chat arabic with me pls let me know i miss it so much!). spanish bc i’m currently learning it on duolingo but my best friend is spanish and it is important to her, and i just love spanish music and i would be able to learn so much more about culture and communicate with so many people and and and ~ hmm maybe russian? i think it’s such a cool sounding language and the alphabet fascinates me! (so many languages, so little time!!)

5. what is the best gift you have ever received?

oooh there’s definitely one i’m blanking on but the one in my heart rn is my friends throwing me a surprise party when we were all at uni and it was so unexpected and not usually my thing but it was the loveliest afternoon and i got to spend time with all my favourite people and it makes my heart happy to think about it and means the world that they planned it so carefully *cries*

@glacial-insanity hi there!! hope ya’ll dont mind me jumping into this, but i would like to state my opinion on this matter.

i understand ur points n where u r coming from. however, id like to explain few things, so hope u don’t mind.

firstly, about ‘both ways’, lena nor the anon had dismissed the feelings of bi women, they simply stated what they thought n felt (also pretty disrespectful not neglect lena’s feelings since she’s bi herself!!). like what was stated before in the previous asks, if bi women were offended then liam should take responsibilities for that, doesnt matter if he wrote it or not, he still included it in the album, so he should take responsibility. i think we should understand that different ppl feel different from one another and some might or might not be offended. but still, liam should’ve took that song through some thinking.

yes, it’s not abt harries, no one mentioned them when referring to the song, but many of them use it in a way to hate on liam even tho he had acknowledged them and took it into consideration. (but we wouldnt know until we see actions from him saying otherwise!)

about ur second point, i was a bit confused to what u were talking abt so i did some searching. honestly, i thought his gig in Saudi arabia was to see his fans in the middle east n had nothing to do w their prince since the arabic liam stans i follow had only stated abt their excitement to see him n not abt him supporting the prince. but regardless of what i think, liam should’ve done some digging since saudi arabia is known for not supporting lgbtqa+ and he should’ve know abt that, but id like to think that he did that for his fans in there tho :/

also, as a middle eastern, there were some cases of honor killing but i dont think the law supported those actions. sure the law turned blind eye like always, but now with having women rights n considering human rights overall. i did some discussing w my friend who is also arabic n we spoke abt how that used to be there but not anymore (or we would like to think of that rlly! besides, since we haven’t heard anything from our fellow arabs, especially those from saudi arabia). that being said, liam still should take responsibility n look into the history of the country, but lord knows ya’ll dont pay that much attention to us.

yes it happened last yr (i think), but that doesn’t mean that he wont grow up n wont improve himself. i literally hate when all of u cancel ppl n when they try to do smth right u say that they doing it for attention or its not rlly them. like there’s something called developing n improving. ppl do bad things but that doesnt mean that we cant help them understand it n hold them to it until they make it right. i’ve come to notice that liam stans (at least those i follow) never make excuses for liam’s toxic n problematic actions n always hold him for it n want him to make it right.

even though, id like to think some of us would stan someone for their talents, it would be stupid of me to think that. we r way to invested in their lives n want to know things abt them beyond their careers. before i liked liam for who he is, i liked his voice n then personality n well ofc his looks but regardless of his shitty actions he has done great things n helped ppl n i think it’s a bit sad to ‘cancel’ someone, anyone in general, bc they’ve done something w/o letting them know abt it n giving them a chance to imrpove n change to better. sounds stupid but i do have faith that everyone is good n they can be good (dont know if it’s abt me as a person or if it was me as a psychology studnets :/). before knowing liam’s actions n life in general, i love him for himself n the good things he has done, just like how the rest of ppl like their fave. he had managed to make my life n others’ life better n had put a smile on our faces, n for that i’ll always be grateful.

lastly, pls dont include us w his haters, we love liam too much to be considered ‘hate’. i dont know abt the rest of ziams, but for me i have the doubts of whether what im believing n thinking is wrong n it only harming liam n zayn, as well as their ‘children’, but logically speaking, there r too much evidence to just ignore it n not mention it. however, those bloggers have never once saw them going to liam n telling him abt what they think n how is child is not his child n it’s not real, if liam saw that then he prob follows them or read some stuff abt that to show up in his timeline.

sorry for this long essay lol (uni managed to effect me), but i wanted to state my opinion on this matter even tho some might disagree n ignore. hope no one minds or take offense of this :)

i'm sorry to throw this in your 'ask box', but i just cant handle their shit. they keep treating harry like god and keep repeating tpwk when they r out their treating his own friend like shit n hating on him bc they keep assuming shit that doesnt make sense. it does make me very upset abt how they state their opinion in a horrible way. i just hope that liam doesnt find that vid n doesnt read their comments abt him. unfortunately, the double standards will always be there especially when it comes to harry vs ot4. i will never understand why harries preach about “treating people with kindness” but then turn around and bully/send threats to liam? that’s the complete opposite of treating people with kindness. and even if harry and liam weren’t friends anymore i highly doubt harry would want his fans bullying anyone let alone someone he was friends with.

I'm about to turn 16, and would like to save up for a reliable, cheap (2k-4.5k), good-looking, car. It has to be American, or anything other than Honda, Subaru, Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, etc. cause dad works for GM. I am paying for the car on my own, most likely, but maybe I can convince parents to pay 1k or so. Money is tight right now in my family. Dad got demoted last year during GM's bankruptcy, and may get a promotion in spring. My Mom is opening a restaurant this year, which is going to cost a lot. I got a job in November at a brand new Kroger grocery store, where I get minimum wage and cannot work over 16 hours per week because I'm only 15. I have saved a little over 1.2k in the bank. I also have invested $500 of my own money this year into stocks, which are up a little. This might sound dumb to some, but I have dreamed of buying a motorcycle. I want a Kawasaki Ninja 650R. Since hubby is in exceptional health and hasnt had any medical problems (knock on wood!) he continues without health insurance; I remain on my parents plan as I'm 25 (aka under 26yrs old), and we pay for child health plus for my daughter, for a small fee a month, which depends on our income We simply couldn't afford to pay $800 a month for family coverage, so doing it this way saves us, like $600+! So since we don't make enough to pay for hubbys $800 family plan through work, is obamacare basically going to force hubby to get health insurance through his work, even though it's complete garbage? Or will his employer have more affordable family plan that we could afford? Just trying to understand it all better! Thanks in advance! :-)""
