About Two Years Later

Honestly, you could’ve sat in your car for about an hour and just cried. Cried with joy, of course, because you’d just finished your very last final of dental school. You were officially done, graduating in just a few days.

It had been a long, difficult two years, but you’d done it.

Not without some help, mind you. A lot of help.

Brian had made it seem like it would be no trouble at all to help you out financially, but he had obviously been very optimistic. It hadn’t been easy; he’d had to make a fairly large dent in his savings, but he also hadn’t let you stop him. He had continuously made the argument that it would all be worth it in the end.

Plus, he’d ended up moving in with you and Sammy before the end of your first semester which had lessened the load quite a bit.

But now. Now, it was all over. No more classes, no more tests, no more practicums, no more tuition.

All you had to do was find a job.

Sammy had helped, too, of course. He’d helped you study as best as he could, and he never complained when you took your textbook to his soccer games. He’d even pestered you to contact your old work to see if maybe they would re-hire you as a hygienist, something you planned on doing tomorrow.

Truly, how could you have survived this on your own?

A very long, heavy sigh escaped your lips as you headed to your apartment, clutching your keys. Now that you were done with school, the urge to leave this tiny, old place was overwhelming; you could barely wait to find an actual house with a yard and a garage and privacy.

Speaking of, you figured you would get some for a little while seeing as the middle and high school were still in session; both Brian and Sammy would still be at school.

It would be nice to have some alone time, but... you’d been so busy the past two years, you were very much looking forward to spending more time with the two guys you loved most in this world.

You unlocked the front door of your apartment, letting out another sigh as you walked in.

But then you froze when your gaze landed on just the two guys you’d been thinking of. They were standing in the living room, and the apartment was filled with streamers and balloons and a big banner which read ‘YOU SURVIVED’ hung up on the wall.

“Wha --” you gaped, your brow furrowing.

All of a sudden, Brian and Sammy erupted into cheers. Sammy even blew a noisemaker while Brian threw some confetti into the air.

“What is this?!” you chuckled, setting your bookbag down and making your way over to them. You held your arms out and wrapped them tightly around Sammy (who was now a couple of inches taller than you - don’t get me started).

“You’re officially done,” Brian grinned, accepting your embrace once you’d finished hugging Sammy. “It’s time to celebrate.”

“Both of you are supposed to be in school!” you pointed out, trying to scold them but failing miserably.

“I got a sub for the rest of the afternoon and checked Sammy out early,” Brian explained with a casual shrug.

“We weren’t going to miss this momentous occasion!” Sammy cried before blowing the noisemaker again.

You leaned into Brian, one arm around him with your hand clutching the back of his shirt. You hadn’t been expecting to see them until later, so being greeted by their smiling faces right as you walked in the door? You were already a bit emotional from having finally finished school, but now you were simply overcome.

Brian squeezed your shoulders when he heard you sniffle, and Sammy blew the noisemaker yet again to try and liven the mood.

“What are we doing to celebrate?” you asked with a watery grin.

“Whatever you want,” Brian replied. “We can have a night in, we can go out, we can do anything your heart desires.”

“Ooh!” Sammy gasped. “Can we invite Jae and Dowoon over to play League of Legends?”

Brian let out a single, very amused ‘ha!’ “We’re celebrating your aunt, not you.”

“No, that’s fine,” you chuckled. “Invite Sungjin and Wonpil, too, we can have a little party.”

Brian had a solid group of friends from college, and over the past two and a half years, you’d gotten to know them pretty well. After you’d run into Jae and Wonpil at the movie theater, Brian had introduced you to Sungjin and Dowoon over lunch. They had quickly accepted you into their friend group, and you’d even introduced them to Sammy on Brian’s birthday that first year (you hadn’t been able to get him any presents, but you had thrown him the best party you could at your apartment).

And now, hardly a weekend went by when Sammy didn’t request inviting over his two favorite video game partners. You’d even asked Sungjin to stay with Sammy one weekend when Brian had insisted on whisking you away for a romantic weekend in the mountains. You’d basically been on the verge of a mental breakdown at that point; the stress of school and money had gotten to you, but Brian had successfully calmed you down in the span of two days. He had a way of doing that, actually. Making you focus on the positives to help you overcome the negatives.

It was just one reason why you loved him so much.

“Are you sure?” Brian asked as Sammy pumped his fists in the air and whooped victoriously. “I mean, they’re coming to your graduation party next weekend, you’ll see them then.”

“I’m sure,” you replied, trying to hide a sly smirk. You stood on your toes as Sammy grabbed Brian’s phone from the kitchen counter and presumably began to type out an invite text to Jae. You placed your lips close to Brian’s ear and whispered, “You can ask one of them to take Sammy for the night.”

Brian’s eyebrows shot halfway up his forehead. And his lips curved into a smirk to match yours exactly.

You could see it now: Jae would ask Sammy if he wanted to continue their video game back at his place, and while you knew this meant Sammy would stay up until almost dawn playing, Sammy didn’t know you knew. So he would think he was getting away with something, and you and Brian would have the place to yourselves to celebrate in a different way (if you catch my drift).

It was a win/win scenario in every possible way.

Except for the fact that Sammy would be gone. You cherished alone time with Brian, obviously, but you still missed Sammy when he wasn’t around. After almost three years of being his legal guardian, you realized it was sometimes kind of hard to remember a time when Sammy hadn’t been yours.

The two of you talked about his parents a lot, of course - Sammy’s counselor in middle school had urged him to bring them up at home since you were one of his only connections to his parents. But it had gotten to the point where you laughed more than you cried. You had more good days than bad days.

You’d gotten so close with Sammy these past three years, and he just felt like... yours. Like he was your son. And you knew your brother and sister-in-law would’ve wanted nothing less.

But anyway. Enough emotional talk and back to your current situation.

All four of Brian’s friends were able to come over, and the evening played out exactly as you’d imagined. Brian ordered about five pizzas for everyone, and Sammy was at a stage where he was eating so much, you honestly wondered if it would be enough.

Jae and Dowoon plopped right down onto the couch with Sammy and picked up a game controller. They would only set them down to eat and again later when it was time to leave.

Sungjin and Wonpil kept you and Brian company, talking about this and that, congratulating you on completing your degree finally, asking about your future plans. (Side note: you noticed Wonpil started to ask a question - “When are you going to --” and Brian cut him off. You tried not to think too much about it, but it was fairly suspicious...)

Once all of the pizza was gone and the sun had gone down, you watched as Brian shuffled to the couch and bent to whisper something in Jae’s ear. Jae nodded, winking conspiratorially at his friend before setting down his controller.

“Well, who’s up for continuing this at my place?” he asked, turning to eye both Dowoon and Sammy.

Sammy immediately spun to look at you with hopeful, pleading eyes, and you pretended to let out a ‘well, I guess’ sort of sigh.

“Sure,” you relented. “Just don’t stay up all night.”

Sammy sprung from the couch and ran into his room to pack an overnight bag as Sungjin and Wonpil began to clean everything up.

As soon as the door closed behind them about ten minutes later, Brian’s lips were on yours, and he promptly picked you up and carried you into the bedroom.

It had been a while since either of you had spoken. You were cuddled up in bed, and you were fairly sure Brian had fallen asleep. But when you turned over to face him, his eyes were on you, warm and curious as they always were.

“What is it?” he whispered, raising a hand and smoothing your hair back from your forehead.

You simply gazed at him for a few moments, taking in his handsome face while you had the chance. And then you whispered back, “Thank you.”

“For what?” he murmured before leaning in and pressing his lips to your forehead.

“For everything. I don’t think I can ever put into words how much it means to me that you --” You took a breath, already feeling the lump of emotion forming in your throat. “God, this sounds so cheesy, but you changed my life. If it weren’t for you, I would still --”

“You would’ve found your way here eventually,” Brian interrupted. “You didn’t need me.”

“But you came into my life at just the right time. I... I was struggling. I didn’t even know how badly I was struggling, but you helped me. I don’t know how I can ever repay --”

Brian stopped you with a kiss, and you knew if you tried to bring it up again, he would just keep kissing you.

So...

“No, really, I am going to --”

Your lips curved into a smile as Brian pushed you over onto your back, attempting to deepen the kiss through your grin.

Did you know your boyfriend or did you know your boyfriend?

You’d heard Brian and Sammy’s cheers as the dean read out your name and you began to walk across the stage to accept your diploma. Your cheeks warmed, and you lowered your head a little in embarrassment.

And then their cheers got even louder when you shook the university president’s hand and smiled for the quick photo op.

You knew they were proud of you, but did they have to be so loud about it?

When every single student in the auditorium had walked across the stage, you followed your classmates out, trying to keep an eye on your boys so you would be able to find them in the crowd of people.

As soon as you stepped out into the sunshine, you heard two voices calling your name, though one was saying ‘Aunt’ in front of it. You stood on your toes, trying to see over all of the graduation caps surrounding you.

All of a sudden, Brian’s arm shot up through the crowd and waved around. You began to weave your way through to get to him, your lips pulling into a smile as you shuffled closer.

“There she is!” Brian crowed the second he saw you. “The graduate herself come to grace us with her degreed presence.”

“Shut up,” you chuckled, your cheeks pink as you tilted your head to accept his quick kiss.

“All right, come on, picture time.” Brian slid his phone out of his pocket and waved Sammy over to you.

Your nephew came to stand next to you, putting an arm around your shoulders. You put your own arm around his middle as you held your black leather diploma envelope against your chest.

Brian took about a dozen pictures, instructing Sammy to hug you, kiss your cheek, look at you with fond pride - and by the end, he even had to instruct Sammy to smile.

“Come on, Sam,” Brian chuckled. “Look like you’re proud of your aunt, at least!”

“I am! I think it shows in the previous twenty pictures,” Sammy pointed out with a roll of his eyes.

“Okay, okay, fine,” Brian relented. “You come and take the pictures, then.”

So Sammy and Brian switched places, Sammy taking the phone while Brian took his place at your side.

Unsurprisingly, Sammy didn’t have to tell Brian how to pose in the pictures. He hugged you and kissed you and looked at you with fond pride and smiled all on his own.

“Okay, I think that’s good,” Sammy said impatiently after probably the fifth pose.

“No, just one more,” Brian requested.

Sammy groaned.

“Just one! It’ll be a good one, I promise!”

“All right,” Sammy sighed, lifting the phone up yet again.

You stood there smiling, waiting for Brian to put his arm around you or hug you or something. But you didn’t feel his touch. You only heard him say your name.

“Hmm?” you hummed, turning to face him.

But he wasn’t there.

Your eyes shifted downward, and the sight of Brian kneeling on the ground next to you made your heart stop.

Wait, not only was he kneeling -- he was also holding a small, black box in his hands, opened to reveal the most beautiful ring you’d ever seen.

You immediately gasped, your diploma envelope falling to the ground as your hands flew to cover your mouth.

Brian, meanwhile, was smiling as brightly as he’d ever smiled. Sammy was cheering, and you glanced over to see he still had Brian’s phone up, recording everything.

“Y/N,” Brian began when you turned to look back at him. “Will you marry me?”

Your eyes filled with tears, and you wasted no time in nodding your head.

Before you knew, Brian had swept you into his arms, holding you tightly and murmuring how much loved you into your ear.

And the ring was on your finger.

The past three years had been the most difficult, challenging, heartbreaking, and rewarding years of your life. You’d lost your grandmother and your brother, the only family you’d ever known. You’d struggled living paycheck to paycheck, your bank account going into the negatives too many times to count. You’d worried and cried and stressed more than any person should.

You’d lost a lot of things, but you’d gained Sammy. You’d gained a son - a wonderful, amazing, perfect son. And now you were gaining a husband. A wonderful, amazing, perfect husband.

Most people did it the other way around - gain the husband first and then the son. But you couldn’t remember the last time your life had been normal.

Maybe now it would be.

We’ll just say... you were working on it.

i either had the nicest hygienist at my dentist appointment today or she was transphobic and i seriously can’t figure it out. at first i thought she was just being super nice and curious but now that it’s stewed in my brain for like 5 hours, im leaning towards transphobic???

note that while she is talking to me, there is only a few times i can talk back to her because this is a dentist appointment and she got tools in my mouth a lot, although i did give some good explanations

so originally she was just asking me why i had decided to change my name to what it is now. she knew about my legal name not being the one i use because my mom had to tell the office beforehand about it. so i go on an explanation about how i picked it out. she asks me how i figure out i was non-binary, i explain that it was something id always felt but only really realized it like 3 or 4 years ago, and that it was just a feeling of being a person, and that it’s hard to explain.

throughout the appointment, she tells me im very pretty multiple times (and im smiling as much as i can through a dentist appointment because holy shit so many fucking compliments and i get to talk about gender!!), and that, man what she would give to look as pretty as me, and that i should be a model. like she does this 3 times or so. says im very photogenic. note that the first time she says this to me, she says, “i know you identify as non-binary and more masculine leaning, but i have to say, you are a very pretty girl.” i didn’t take offense to that at all originally because i was like in my head “yeah i get what she’s trying to say and she did put a disclaimer beforehand”, but like... i dont know...

at one point, she tells me to be wary of taking any hormones if im thinking about it because according to her, they give you a higher risk of cancer. i tell her that no, i havent been considering it because i dont feel the need. now, i did just try to look it up quickly and couldnt find anything at the surface level, i would appreciate if anyone could clarify that for me cause i would like to know about that if they really do

towards the end of the appointment, she says that she feels like im “one of those people that people tell to stand in front of a mirror naked and look at themselves until they love themselves as much as they deserve.” paraphrasing, dont remember the exact wording, but it was something similar to that. she told me that’s my homework for the day and reminds me that i am very pretty.

SO WAS SHE JUST NICE AND TELLING ME TO LOVE MYSELF MORE OR WAS SHE TRYING TO CONVINCE ME THAT I’M ONLY NON-BINARY BECAUSE SHE THINKS THAT I THINK I’M UGLY?????

note that this is the first time ive met this woman in my LIFE. i thought she was just being genuinely curious about the whole non-binary thing but it was like she just got so comfortable so fast?? am i just not used to some stranger reassuring me of my self-worth?

also both her and the doctor kept telling me that my teeth were absolutely gorgeous so at least im sure of one thing and that is i am good at keeping my teeth clean 👍 havent had single cavity in my adult teeth, and ive gone through the entire process of braces

(i will say that this wasn’t all we chatted about, she told me about her self-publishing daughter and stuff, she wasn’t like LASER-focused on my gender identity lol)

How am I supposed to afford car insurance?

I'm driving uninsured right now because for me to get car insurance is $900 every six months. That would crush me financially right now. Does the insurance company ( the other guys' fault) pay for rental car insurance?

I got swiped in the week. He is culpable and using his insurance Farmers. I get a rental while my car is in the shop. Farmers- do they pay for my rental insurance, if I am not covered to drive another car but my own? I have legal insurance- liability but not collision. THe guy who swiped me was extremely nice, giving me humbers and taking photos and so on- he was decent. But to pay extra for collision ( Enterprize mentioned this) it'll be 15-18 bucks a day. I was recently in a car accident where a Nissan truck ran into the back of another car that then ran into the back of me causing $2000 worth of damage to the rear of my infiniti. It is probably safe to say that many of you reading this little piece can affirm your anxiety about a visit to ye olde dentist, contingent upon the type and intensity of the procedure. Root canals? Bridgework? Wisdom tooth extraction? Yes, these are a far cry from routine cleanings, although if you are overcome by an overly active nervous system wrung in by episodes of panicky, sweaty nervous tics even with the suggestion of a routine visit, let alone a deep cleaning, then like myself, you request to be numbed out from the immanent terror that will pervade your every cell.

Some time ago, I scheduled a series of 4 deep cleanings. These are not your daddy’s cleanings, but rather the deepest you can go—instruments that make noises similar to the one heard at a construction site. However, the cleanings were even deeper than I could ever imagine, going beyond superficial cleaning to a light cleaning of my soul, in some regard, as I will soon explain. Of course, I had neglected the less pervasive routine cleanings for some time, given my anxiety over going to the dentist, thus, my punishment for such a forbearance of dental hygiene maintenance rendered me culpable and thus requiring more attention from these masked men and women in white. One day I hope to take heed to the Universal Dental Law of the inverse relationship between frequency of visits and intensity of service provided.

Little did I know that one could partake of the consciousness-altering nitrous oxide for a mere cleaning. Only when I began to sweat at my checkup at the mention of a “serious, deep cleaning” did my hygienist give me the good news—that my body would be sitting in the chair, but my mind in fact would be migrating elsewhere. Perhaps somewhere near where my occasional ayahuasca sessions have taken me—to that nebulous Bardo that rests outside this reality-bubble, especially the reality involving hygienists in medical garb operating their intimidating dental weaponry. Yes, I could pop open the Tupperware lid like that curious old Chaldean astronomer did on the famous Flammarion woodcut. I could be as William James did once when he took in that not-so-stale air and saw the White Crow that is the inner-potential of the human race.

My only memory of the effects of nitrous oxide is fuzzy at best—a brief and capricious little college detour (a la whippets) that did nothing more than make me sound like Emilio Estevez on peyote in Young Guns as I tentatively uttered, “Did you know we’re in the spirit world?” It was a pure, unadulterated giggle-fest and nothing more. No discernment or journaling from my trip to the “Other Side.” Of course, this was far before I took serious interest in the study of altered states of consciousness (ASC) as a tool for personal and spiritual development.

Nine years ago, I began a doctoral dissertation on the use of ayahuasca in the context of a religious setting as a method of developing more effective coping strategies for daily and life stressors. A year prior to that, I had witnessed my first ayahuasca session with the Santo Daime Church, a syncretic religious organization that calls upon ayahuasca (Daime) as its sacrament. Since then, I have been attending at least once every couple of months. Those sessions opened the door to a realm of spiritual and psychedelic possibility, invoking a far greater appreciation for all substances psychedelic (or entheogenic if you wish). Now even the occasional marijuana constitutional is much like a neuro-enrichment tool that allows me to break down barriers, make connections, and even discover mini-breakthroughs in my array of psychedelic-related projects.

So, I made the appointment and for the first time was for the most part looking forward to my dental treatment—a remarkable first! Interestingly enough, when I got to the appointment I began to have anxiety about the very thing that was supposed to alleviate my anxiety. A testament to the fact that I am a perfect candidate for nitrous oxide for even what may seem as the most mundane and least threatening of procedures.

And then…..it happened. The Nitrous Oxide worked. It was similar to being stoned ala a smoke session with a superior marijuana strain—but in the middle of the day in a dental office, which completely enhances the experience. There is an added intensity to being stoned in an orthodox setting (albeit, in an unorthodox fashion). That is, instead of smoking pot sitting around a fire, or hanging out with friends on a Friday evening, etc., the contrast of unorthodox ritual (unless you’re a pothead) with orthodox setting (usually involving strangers during the day in public) tends to greatly alter the experience. Although with nitrous, there is an additional euphoria, or giggle factor—less of the paranoia that may often be associated with marijuana.

So, there I was—stoned to the bejesus on nitrous and apparently someone was tooling around in my mouth. Rather than this operation becoming the focus of my experience, it was somewhat ancillary, although it did off-set some unique visionary motifs and sensations. For example, in my years of accumulated ayahuasca sessions, I have come to experience recurring spiritual visions, sensations, and what many would call “astral beings.” Whether or not these are actual beings is another topic for another blog. However, what I did see was so strikingly similar to my ayahuasca visions, that I can conclude it was a different key that opened up the same doorway to that mysterious “other side” of visionary and experiential phenomena.

I saw the ever-present “Buddha’s Eyes” with a vague “Tiger-striped” outline, which engendered the same “I’m a-being-from-another-dimension-over-watching-you-for-some-cosmic-reason” sensation. Additionally, as seen in several of my ayahuasca sessions, there was also the faint presence of a trickster entity revealing these rolls of complex symbol-laden wall paper as if he possessed at his disposal far more knowledge and intelligence than I could ever begin to comprehend. Although, it was typical for me to see the trickster only in the beginning, as if he were testing my meddle, revealing his visual tricks as if it were merely fodder for the purposes of some sort of decorative, theatrical gesture—an initial stage in the journey of the Hero. Perhaps it was a similar dimension, yet the beginning of the course for this particular….entheogen? After all, it did induce very similar spiritual-invoking sensations.

When I did come to focus on the procedure being done on my teeth, this also generated a rather unique experience. Rather than feeling accosted by this dental tech, I felt as though she were some angelic being making love to my soul—those gentle, delicate scrapes on my chin with her prophylactic-clad hand felt like love and connection at the time, rather than torture. I did experience a little bit of pain, which was related to the drill-bit entering a cavity in one of my molars, reverberating throughout my skull and cascading into strange, psychedelic vignettes. But I was safe, for my dental tech had become my shaman—my angelic guide, cleaning out the old crusty detritus, just as the shaman clears out the psychic detritus of his inebriated and distressed client.

Fast forward to just over 4 years. Although I had a cleaning or two in between the aforementioned session and this one, this particular session was notable. I had set up another 4-quadrant deep cleaning series, and the first one—just 3 weeks ago—was not remotely memorable, at least in a positive sense. I had a different hygienist—not my usual dental shaman with the soft, but calculating touch. This DH seemed to lack the same level of confidence, and she could not quite get the nitrous—my medicine—right, and that was everything! Imagine the shaman not being able to deliver the goods, whether it was an ineffective dose, or administered improperly (“okay, try pouring the shot over your eye and see what happens….”). This throws the whole system off. We tried different apparatus styles and arrangements, and finally settling on one. Ineffective = not a pleasant situation. I didn’t want to make this about dental work. It was more than that. Good dental hygiene is a positive benefit of this session, or should be, but getting the inside of my mouth drilled and scraped should not be a focal point—it should be merely a radio playing in the background.

That was 3 weeks ago. On this particular day, I was introduced to new blood. A [youngish] middle-aged man of African descent with a thick accent and foreign name—a name that was suggestive of a “sleeper” shaman, a warm connector, and a gentle steward of transitions—from the daily grind to the twilight sublime. He turned out to be what I thought of as the Charlie Parker of dental shamanism—the Yardbird of the dental theater. He had a virtuosic technique, his own advanced harmonies, and was at once—clean, penetrating, sweet, and somber, and played my teeth at a rapid bebop clip. He took heed of my medicine (NO)—making sure it was in working order this time, and went right to penetrating jabs of gum-numbing. I asked if I could record myself (for the site), and he casually declined due to potential legal recourse and restrictions. I threw in my ear buds, connected to the wi-fi, and found a random House Trance mix on YouTube—my shamanic shuffle.

After about 20 minutes of desperately grasping my stress ball, the glass insert of the blue sky and clouds on the ceiling became my portal to the Bardo, and again, the drilling and scraping (his equivalent of a shamanic saplado), became an event that was simply occurring to a body that I inhabit most of the time. Although this session did not seem as intense as the one that occurred years ago, I must say that it is beyond refreshing to be at this level of “high” in the middle of the afternoon during a weekday. I was flooded with ideas—for writing, for my business (Bamboom), for performances, and talks. I tend to call the level of thinking that inhabits me “psychedelic cognition,” (PC) in which traditional, linear barriers are dissolved and my cognition and visionary states take on a multi-dimensional, holographic quality.

I sat there thinking—aside from “if William James was here, he’d be proud”—“How am I going to remember all of this stuff? I can’t necessarily write it down on my little notepad.” I then utilized the power of PC and conceptualized a vast hyper-dimensional cube (HDC) in which each thought/idea was represented by potent, numinous constructs (images or symbols), or what I sometimes call concrescences, and these images were “nodal points” on the corners of said HDC. I then attempted to correlate each construct with one another to in turn form a gestalt—a sort of holographic archetypal cube (HAC). I realize I’m getting heavy with the acronyms here, but this last one—HAC—I must admit, is a particularly good one since it is in fact a “hack,” and I seem to have immersed myself (like the rest of the culture increasingly) in the world of hacking (think bio-hacking, life-hacking, growth-hacking, etc.). In short, I left with a smile worthy of revealing given the fresh, new sheen on my teeth, but most importantly, I got to hop aboard the train to a hyperdimensional world with the Shamanic Dental Yardbird as the chief engineer of the Bardo Express.
