Why did I look. In the notes.

Okay, I’m super not done talking about this musical that doesn’t even fucking exist... I’m not a professional music theorist by any means, just a giant musical theater geek, but I need to talk about the idea I had for the score.  Specifically the Balcony Scene.

Jemi and I had imagined The Fake Cyrano Musical as being scored by Schönberg and Boubli, and especially in their composition for Les Miserables, there are a ton of recurring motifs.  I wanted to replicate some of that with leitmotifs for Roxanne and for Cyrano and Christian as a duo.  We first hear Roxanne’s leitmotif at the theater--maybe she’s talking to de Guiche, but it’s important that we hear it sung by her first--and then it’s echoed by Cyrano during his conversation with Le Bret, and then again by Christian when he tells Cyrano how afraid he is to woo her.  That’s when we first introduce Christian and Cyrano’s shared motif, which becomes the Letters Theme.  I love the montage from the 1950 movie of Cyrano essentially acting as the Henry Higgins to Christian’s Eliza Doolittle, so we could probably make the Letters Theme into its own song as the two of them and Roxanne write back and forth to each other.  Eventually the rest of Roxanne’s household hears about what’s happening, and it becomes basically a more energetic and intricate version of “Every Letter” from the 2021 movie as everybody reacts to each other.

And then it all comes together and then promptly derails in the balcony scene.  When Roxanne first comes out and Cyrano tries to coach Christian through what to say, we hear the Letters Theme--a halting, more uncertain rendition of it since Christian is still trying to copy Cyrano’s way with words, but can’t quite manage with the dark and distance.  Roxanne’s motif comes back in tinkling, teasing tones as she pokes holes in Christian’s fumbling, and eventually the music stops altogether.  “This grows too difficult.”  Cyrano and Christian switch places, and a new melody replaces the recurring motifs--also halting and uncertain at first, but growing in lushness and passion as Cyrano finds his courage and pours out his heart.  Roxanne answers in turn, and the earlier awkwardness is replaced with perfect musical cohesion...

Until Christian asks for a kiss.  And it all comes crashing back down to earth.

The music tries to start back up again as Cyrano tries to salvage the situation, but doesn’t quite manage for a few more measures.  And it’s absolutely key that this same new love melody, now bubbling under the surface and trying to work back up to a boil, doesn’t stop when Cyrano and Christian are talking to each other.  Once Christian scales the balcony and gives Roxanne her kiss, then the music crescendos, and we get a little “Heart Full of Love” moment--Christian and Roxanne together, Cyrano in distant counterpoint below the balcony.  That transcendence of love has returned--so strong it blows past all the existing melodies we’ve already heard up to that point--and there’s a bittersweet note as Cyrano watches the ones he loves from afar.  “My words upon his lips...”

(If I really wanted to twist the knife, I’d include a callback during the very last scene as well... we never hear the balcony’s song of love again except for one other time: when Cyrano reads his and Christian’s very last letter.  We expect to hear the Letters Theme again, and so does Roxanne since her quiet counterpoint takes up that melody.  But this last letter goes to the tune of the balcony’s song... and every other line, we hear Christian’s voice.  It’s a musical representation that Cyrano and Roxanne still aren’t on the same page yet, but this time he can sing honestly to her face without the cover of dark, and Christian can sing through him as he always has.  It’s the last time we hear Christian’s voice, too, as the rest of the finale plays with very spare instrumentation and the theatricality is stripped back a bit as Cyrano spends his last moments with Ragueneau, Le Bret, and Roxanne at his side.  And since spoken dialogue could be a very easy indication of honesty in a mostly sung-through show, this could also be the last time any of the characters talk to each other rather than sing.)

@skunkoon​ i hope you do not regret asking me for nine of these goddamn things. I’ll try to keep this tidy. we’ve got two penumbra, two megamind, one inn between, one from that novel i pulled from earlier, and then one each from my 2018 and 2017 NaNo’s

so.

1. I’ll start with another penumbra one. i won’t say exactly what it is but honestly it’s probably obvious.

“If you do intend do shoot me, honeysuckle, you will need to do so before I am too close to shoot,” Arum says, mildly, and the tip of the arrow is mere inches from his chest. “Or, you may dance with me again, and perhaps when we are done I will give you what you request. I will show you my face, and then you may decide if you intend to follow through and loose your arrow at last.”

The arrowhead scrapes the purple of his cape, tickles his scales through the fabric, and Damien is looking up at him with such uncertainty that Arum can nearly hear the shouting in his mind. He can certainly hear the shouting of his heart, hammering away in that chest, and the sweet sharpness of his breath.

“I stole a dance from you downstairs, honeysuckle,” Arum says, quite softly, and then he lifts a hand. “Would you give one to me freely, now?”

2. more penumbra. oof. i have so many partially published wips send me to jail.

“I would have done it,” he mutters. “Left to my own devices, I would rather have nothing to do with either humans or monsters, but- but they offered the contract, and I knew that the end result would have theoretically destroyed humanity. I would have done it, without a second thought. If it would protect… I would have done it.”

“Why are you telling me this?” Damien repeats, and his suspicion is morphing by degrees into anger.

“They did not allow me that choice. They plucked it from me and then attempted to discard me. And then-” he inhales, lip curling into something like a smile. “And then Amaryllis. The monster collective dismisses my skills and attempts to destroy me rather than allowing me to create that which should destroy humanity, and then the waters bring me here, and then a human-”

“Monster,” Damien snarls, his heart hammering in his chest, “why are you telling me this?”

3. someday i will fucking finish this. megamind accidentally pulls a bunch of versions himself from different close parallel dimensions and now we have to deal with that.

“Well, this is perfect, isn’t it?” the youngest of the Megaminds said. “Whatever solution we come up with, we can test out on the meddling reporter before we risk our own skins.”

The room went- Roxanne couldn’t call it dead silent, but it certainly was unpleasantly quiet. Not a single Megamind looked any degree of pleased at that suggestion, but the one in the button-down looked positively venomous. He didn’t step any closer to the young version of himself, but the angle of his body shifted in a way that looked dangerous, poised.

“I am going to give you a pass on that, because I remember when I was that young and stupid and scared and liked to make that everyone else’s problem,” button-down says, utterly even and quiet. “But I will remind you not to bullshit a bullshitter. I know what you really feel.” He grinned, wide and feral. “We all do.”

4. another megamind one??? one of the love stories set, it’s been on the back burner for a while. set a long ways before the movie.

He frowned, looking profoundly uncomfortable. “I think- I think it was worth a shot, but you and I- we're really not going anywhere, are we? And we both know it.” He sighed. “I don’t even know if I’m- built for human relationships. And I feel- I feel like we were only doing this in the first place because everyone expected it. And because-” he winced, cutting himself off, but she saw the moment he decided to say it anyway. “I feel like we were both pretending to be dating for him.”

Roxanne blinked, face carefully blank, and Wayne sighed.

“Our entire relationship is about Megamind. I think it’s probably… better, for both of us, if we just… admit that.”

5. i will fucking finish this fic. I will finish this fic. I fucking love Inn Between. i will finish this fic.

Marie is thirteen, and so is Lydda. Lydda, who knows strange things like how to predict the day’s weather by the sight of the clouds and the direction of the wind. Lydda, who is polite but speaks her mind regardless, who writes nearly as well in common as Marie does, who purses her lips and squints when she’s unsure, who can scoop her youngest sister into a piggyback without needing to look at her to do it.

Lydda, thrown into the dungeon with her sisters because Marie’s father is so steeped in fear that it is the only tool he still understands how to use.

6. more of from that novel i’m never gonna fuckin finish, the elementals!verse story, because hhhh i remembered it exists now and oh myg od my babies... my babies..... (also rip i used to write in past tense hhhh fuck)

Lerato gave the smallest of laughs, a huff of breath escaping through her smile, but it had been so long since Enna had seen even that much mirth out of her. She fought to keep her own face from crumpling.

She always struggled to understand Lerato, but she never seemed at any pains to know exactly what Enna was thinking in return. Lerato saw Enna’s face; she knew.

“Oh,” she said, dropping the clothes to the side. She stepped closer and lifted her hands, hesitating just short of settling them on Enna’s shoulders. “Oh, Enna. Don’t. Don’t be…”

Everyone always called her Phoenix, these past few lives. She covered her mouth with her hand and her breath hitched.

7. this is from my NaNo project from last year. basically: it’s just found family. it’s just. found family. but also all your parents were in a cult together, oops. 

“Can I hug you? Would that be okay?” Rosa asked gently, still hesitating just shy of reaching out for him completely, and he instantly peeled one of his hands from in front of his face and reached for her, and she unbuckled and slung her arm across his chest, the angle of the seats only really allowing a mismatched, sideways sort of hug.

He squeezed her tight, like he thought she was going to disappear if he wasn’t careful, and after just a moment the shaking seemed to subside, though his breathing was still a bit unsteady. He knocked his head against hers- for a moment she thought it was an accidental collision in an attempt to retreat from the hug, but he tightened the hug for another moment before he let go and she realized it was- some sort of affectionate headbutt, like he was a feral cat that had decided he liked her.

“Shit,” he said dully, rubbing his nose and not looking at her as she slipped back entirely into the driver’s seat. “Sorry about that.”

“Stop,” she said, gentle but firm, and his lip pulled to the side. 

“Fine, fine. Just- kind of hard to wrap my head around- this whole damn time. The last ten years- I’ve had family just- just sitting there, a few hours north, completely unaware. This whole time. You would have been a fucking killer sister, too. You would have probably made me do my homework.”

“And you would have convinced me to actually make some friends,” she said wryly. “But we can’t change any of it now. We can only try to- to deal with what we have now. And right now what we have is a Billie who is feeling very awkward in the back seat by herself, I bet,” she said, and Billie flinched behind them.

8. last but not least, my NaNo project from 2017. ya ever wanna kiss a mermaid a lot, and you’re both girls, 

“Your daughter is courting me, you know. Do you intend to treat me so unkindly when we could soon be family?” She grinned, pretending not to notice the tear tracks on her cheeks.

The clanmother’s head lowered, her shoulders going up. “Courting. Surely not. Surely you don’t-”

“She used that exact word. Not some curious fumbling or experimentation of youth. Not even dating, like I would have said. No, this is a courtship.” She tilted her head, grin turning into a smirk. “Does that give me any rights, then?”

“Liar,” the clanmother said, not a snarl or a growl, but a dismissive statement of fact. She wasn’t going to believe anything else that Amelia said on the subject.

And she could say a lot, she realized. Kissing your daughter feels like swallowing the moon, it’s cool and bright and silver and it makes me feel like all my insides are lit up with her, she could say. She wanted to say, and everything she wanted to say was so focused, like the truth had crystallized in her brain under this new pressure. She makes me feel like I could be brave too, she wanted to say. Or even, she looks at me and she sees me, and even that is a revelation. Your daughter’s eyes are dark and clear as a moonless night and they can actually, really see me. No one ever has before.

She wanted to say- and her mouth opened without her thought, “How did a person as good and kind as Lor come from such a cruel mother as you?”

Andante, andante - Lily James (Mamma mia! 2 OST) // all right, I didn’t mean to return to my Mamma mia! obsession phase - it was bad enough when the first movie got out - but I got to listen to one song (which was not this one, but another song about a student kissing her teacher, rather creepy if you think about it but the music is so engaging it’s still stuck in my head, damn it) by chance and started roaming through the soundtrack of this sequel (which I haven’t seen yet tbh, actually by choice since I already know a thing about the story that upsets me a lot, but I guess I’ll eventually watch it because the songs aren’t bad, though I’ve had the impression that the level of silliness is not even close to the first movie and that’s what I actually enjoyed about it in the first place :p ) and I got to listen to this song and :’) - I’m not even one for love songs but this is so sweet and warm and intimate and Lily James’ voice is delightful so yeah, another one bound to be stuck in my head for days! also it doesn’t help that I’ve been thinking about Philinda slow dancing to this song I have a HUGE problem

Never give up on your dreams - Two Steps From Hell // HA, my mandatory TSFH mention when I talk about music! XD (and be grateful it’s the only one as I tried to make the list varied) One of my favourites (mh, I say that A LOT regarding TSFH but oh well :p ), so moving and epic and heart-lifting, I’m undone whenever I listen to this, like, I can’t function, it’s almost too much for me! :’)

Amazing grace - J2 (feat. Chelsea Caroline) // Oh, I love J2′s covers of songs, they’re so badass!! This is a more pop-rock/epic rendition than the usual hymn, but I find it great, and the singer’s voice is powerful and rich!

Taking the hobbits to Isengard - Erwin Beekveld // I legit have this song in my music playlist - I mean, how could I not?! XD This will NEVER be outdated and not legendary!! 

I’ve no more fucks to give - Thomas Benjamin Wild. Esp. // About this song I’m just going to say LIFE GOALS!!! This is the level I aspire to achieve hands down!

Only happy when it rains - Garbage // I blame the Captain Marvel soundtrack for bringing back this song, which rocks and sometimes is also a BIG mood!!

Northern lights - Gaelic Storm // aaaaaaand Gaelic Storm is another band that tends to pop up when I get to speak about music! I love, love, LOVE this song, it’s so touching and enchanting and soothing and, dare I say, romantic... <33

One day - Hans Zimmer // catch me crying whenever I hear this goddamn piece... especially the godforsaken end, man... you know the scene when it plays... ;_______;

Fat bottomed girls - Red Hot Chilli Pipers // whoo hoo, catch me headbanging and dancing all around at this!! I love the original song, of course, but this version with BAGPIPES!!!!!!!! INSTANT LOVE, it was!!!! (well, it does good on my self-esteem a bit as well, since I think I can consider myself a part of this “category” of ladies celebrated by the song ;) )

Today we rise - Luke Youngblood (Galavant OST) // have I begged you today to watch this show??!!  This is one of my absolute FAVOURITES in the whole soundtrack and I get to sing along proudly every chance I get (which happens basically when I’m alone, since I have to skip this soundtrack while I’m outside in public because if I listened to it I would surely start smiling and giggling like an idiot and people would certainly think me mad) ... lol, Sid always complained about never having the opportunity to do a proper performance and in the end he was given one of the most brilliant songs to sing!!! :D I’m almost, ALMOST tempted to follow him into battle - surely I’ll sing the hell out of it until the end, only to likely hide with the other peasants because well, once you think about what you’re singing you’re not exactly encouraged to pursue!! XD

Helvegen - Wardruna // wow, this song always sends me chills down my spine, so haunting and enchanting!!!

In the end - 2WEI // I blame AOS season 6′s trailer for making me listen to this, although I already heard other pieces of 2WEI... What can I say, I’m rather drawn to epic covers of songs (although I still love the original song to bits)...

El tango de Roxanne - Ewan McGregor, Jacek Koman, José Feliciano (Moulin Rouge OST) // I rewatched the movie not long time ago and this song never fails to fuck me up, I always arrive at the end choked up... I love the soundtrack of this movie!

Vespertine (My crimson bride) - Kamelot // Can’t explain why, but this song, rather than being a fucking WONDER, has also been an anchor for me when my grandmother died... I don’t know really why it kept playing in my head during that period, but it was actually a soothing balm for my wounded heart and my broken thoughts, so I’m really grateful to it for keeping me steady (well, as steady as I could have been in that circumstance)... I love this song (and its album) to bits!!!

Everybody needs somebody to love - The Blues Brothers // This song (and its soundtrack and movie) is a sure antidote to sadness for me, nothing more to say!!

Sailing for adventure (on the big blue wet thing XD) - Muppet Treasure Island OST // let’s end on a VERY serious note, shall we?! Yep, I totally have this song on my phone and every time I listen to it I feel like I could embark on a ship and sail away! (though I’m rather sure I’d end up joining the two “figureheads” singing “should have took the train!” because I may get sea sick or something XD ) Can we appreciate the human actors singing along though?! Well, apart from the marvelous Tim Curry, of course...

Couples Costumes

So Halloween snuck up on me this year because it’s fucking tomorrow and I kinda forgot about it with all the things on the news. I had a handful of Halloween related posts that I wanted to post and while I managed to get a few done, the ones that require some photoshop work are still on my ‘To Do List’. Clearly, I went a little overboard with my post here posting 45 Halloween Costumes above (I am counting the classic Batman Costumes and the Wayne/Garth pics as just two costumes, so yes my math is sound).

I WAS planning to do a Velma/Shaggy or Salt/Snail costume with my S.O. but I am remarkably alone yet again, woe is me and my pity party. ^_^ Not being a downer, I promise. *Slaps Cheeks* Back on topic, Michael! You're rambling again. Yeah so here is a list of costumes. I might make another list next year but let's be honest the best couples costumes will be on this post. If you have your ideas/suggests I love to hear/see them in the notes.

Cartoons

Ash & Misty (Pokemon) - Kind of a classic costume these days as they are both iconic. Who wouldn't want to see their girlfriend in some jean shorts tiny yellow tank top? Misty can be switched out for sexy Pikachu.

Bob & Louise (Bob’s Burgers) - Lots of great characters in the show but none better than Bob and Louise (sorry Tina fans). This would be a fun outfit to host a party and cook burgers. Just a thought.

Birdman & Birdgirl (Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law) - Fun costume for Adult Swim lovers. I love for my girlfriend to do that inner monologue out in the open the way Birdgirl does. I could also switch Harvey out for Phil because “Ha Ha Naughty”. 

Max & Roxanne (Goofy Movie) - Simple costume with some paint on the nose and select clothes. I suspect only the 80′s thru 90′s kids would make the connection but the Z Generation has proved me wrong before.

Wanda & Cosmo (Fairly Oddparents) - Not my favorite costume set but one that would be fun if we had a kid who we were fairy godparents too.

Curious Georgia & Man in the Yellow Hat (Curious George) - This is all the excuse you need to jump on my back or my front or my bed. 

Alice & The White Rabbit (Alice in Wonderland) - Alice in Wonderland has lots of males to dress up as between the March Hare, White Rabbit, Mad Hatter and more. I am sure you girls like options.

Lilo & Stitch (Lilo & Stitch) - If I had four arms the sexy stuff we would do in bed but I don't sadly. However, I can make a great stitch voice not that a cartoon voice does much for you.

Jack Skellington & Sally (Nightmare Before Christmas) - I might be too broad shouldered for this sort of couples costume but if my partner is willing I am game. 

Mavis & Jonathan (Hotel Transylvania) - Mavis is perhaps a little to cute. I mean kind of a strange crush on a little vampire girl, so yeah I am not against someone cosplaying her for me.

Nick Wilde & Judy Hopps (Zootopia) - A little bit anthropomorphizing of Nick and Judy but they got good chemistry and so do we.

Spinelli & T.J. (Recess) - Not to take an innocent toon in a wrong direction but you know they probably smoked weed in high school together and T.J. convinces her to wear a dress for prom but no doubt still has her boots on. They make a cute couple to say the least.

Finn & Fionna (Adventure Time) - Heroes of Adventure Time! Sadly (not really sad about that) I am not blonde but we can always up on some 

Velma & Shaggy (Scooby Doo) - Yet another cartoon crush. I like a nerd and a little thick Velma.

Fred & Wilma (The Flintstones)  - Costumes are epic enough being basically caveman tunics. I can get behind this costume more if we had a Pebbles or Bam Bam to take out trick or treating.

Movies

Black Widow & Captain America (Avengers) - If I could afford it I would be Stark. If my hair was longer I would be Thor. Perhaps Hawkeye would be a better pairing. Regardless Black Widow is a woman among many men. This means you get your pick of which hero I dress up as.

Sam & Suzy (Sunrise Kingdom) - Kind of a hipster approach towards Halloween but sometimes being a nitch audience is ok.

Max & Furiosa (Mad Max) - If my girlfriend had a buzzed head, (for whatever reason that was) Mad Max would be an awesome costume to do together.

Mask & Tina Carlyle (The Mask) - I am a big Jim Carry fan so any excuse to dress up as his characters is a win. Camren Diaz was also smoking hot in this film.

Ash & Sheila (Army of Darkness) - Ash is pretty badass and the number 1 reason to dress as him is to have a chainsaw on your hand and double barrel shotgun on your back.

Dorthy & Scarecrow (Wizard of Oz) - I can also be a Tinman or Lion for your pleasure. That and you can be a green witch... no, I think prefer Dorthy.

Mary Poppins & Bert (Mary Poppins) - This costume would be so much better if I could sing or dance but I can't so I won't.

Aragorn & Arwen (Lord of the Rings) - If I find a woman into the Lord of the Rings (and Game of Thrones) she might be a keeper.

Harry Potter & Hermione Granger (Harry Potter) - Am I the only one who is upset Harry didn't hook up with Hermione? Am I the only one upset Emma Watson didn't hook up with me? Am I rambling? Should I shut up now?

Peter & Gamora (Guardians of the Galaxy) - Might easily be my favorite couple in the MCU. Gonna be a long night painting my girlfriend green.

Beetlejuice & Miss Argentina (Beetlejuice) - Again painting the girlfriend green and myself white! I suppose you could be Lydia and I can actually do a great impression of Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice.

Morticia & Gomez Addams (The Addams Family) - I would pay Thing if I could but sadly I can not disembody may hand and have it run around. I will have to settle for Gomez but your free to pick between Morticia or Wednesday. 

Wayne & Garth (Waynes World) - Playing to males? Meh sure. I loved this movie and I don't mind some cross-dressing for my partner. Just gonna be weird when Wayne makes out with Garth.

Shows

Burt Macklin & Janet Snakehole (Parks and Rec) - I am a special agent on a mission and your a wealthy widow with a secret. Only Parks and Recs fans will get this and that's just fucking great. Two rules though we don't break character and if I find a Johnny Karate, I must fight him.

Dexter Morgan & Hannah McKay (Dexter) - Might have been one of the hottest love scenes in a TV show ever. This costume works well with the plastic wrap and doubly fun to take it off you later.

Eleven & Mike (Stranger Things) - Pretty adorable couple on screen. Not sure about Season 2′s ‘rebel’ storyline in the city but still awesome all the same. I can't wait for season 3.

Batgirl/Catwoman & Batman (Batman Show) - I’m Batman. *Coughs* I mean I am dressed as Batman. The 1960′s Batman costume were simple but fun. Woman didnt look bad at all in their costumes either.

Daredevil & Electra (Daredevil) - I may keep it simple with the black mask and black shirt combo over the body armor. The good thing about those Marvel shows is the outfits are basic as hell.

William Riker & Deanna Troi (Star Trek) - Loved the TNG. Loved Star Trek. Can't go wrong with simple clothes and the Starfleet badge.

Comics/Video Games

Wonder Woman & Superman (DC Comics) - Open to interpretation about which Superman or Wonderwoman we are dressing up as. I have to admit the Wonder Woman movie costume was awesome. 

Batman & Catwoman (DC Comics) - Few romances have ever been so ‘Cat and Mouse’ or rather ‘Bat and Cat’ than that of Batman and Catwoman. The skin-tight body suit and whip make Catwoman all that much alluring. You can decide if you want to go TV show, Cartoon, Comics, Video Game or Movie versions of Selena Kyle.

Rogue & Gambit (Marvel Comics) - A man with deep love and a woman who can never be touched by him (at least skin to skin). This is some Shakespeare level tragedy for this lovely duo.

Spiderman & Black Cat (Marvel Comics) - What can I say its the costume on Black Cat... 

Link & Zelda (Legend of Zelda) - I am totally open to also as playing as Ganon if you want me to capture you and tie you down to the bed. 

Misc

Mimes - A whole day of not talking to one another and miming shit out?! Sounds horrible lets just talk in private when no one is looking.

Fireman & Dalmation Girl - Who’s a good girl? Who’s a good girl? You are! Yes you are!
