I hate to be that guy but I am actually worried about everyone from Twitter migrating over here

I feel like Tumblr in the past couple years has been such a nice space for me where I’m not afraid to share my opinions or be cringy and I’m genuinely worried about losing that, I hope Tumblr doesn’t adopt the same energy as Twitter

With watching streams I’m the exact same way but I usually tune into quackity and tommy’s chill streams as well. I think it’s because I know them enough to care about what they’re saying so the lack of mental stimulation is made up for by my want to care

Stopped using it there and then. say what you want about me but you guys gotta know that I’m a petty bitch first and foremost. With the “harassment” stuff I’ve had my fair share of sending anons asking people to tag stuff right and half the time they just say why and then don’t do it. You wanna know why? Please thats why. i usually don’t know where to go to give my opinion on things bc in all honesty i rarely feel comfortable having discussions with my friend group just bc i genuinely have a problem standing my ground on my perspectives and i also am frequently coming from a “limited point of view” in comparison to them (or maybe i just perceive it that way) and while i acknowledge that i shouldn’t necessarily fault myself for essentially working with what i’ve got and speaking from personal experience, the world today tends to attack anyone with the “wrong take” on things, whether they’re uninformed about things or not, and even outside of that, when people have unpopular opinions or perspectives that don’t necessarily align with the most progressive or “woke��� narratives that are out. not in situations where the conversation is debating human rights or some shit, but more trivial things (some people may argue that entertainment is not trivial either but that’s kinda subjective) anyway a lot of this is the reason i also hate being on twitter bc conversation on there is very heavily focused on establishing community by othering people, or establishing individual superiority by othering yourself, and it’s all so weird and so repulsive. no compassion, no empathy especially not for anyone you don’t particularly agree with.

ANYWAY, all that was to preface me giving my opinion on Them on Amazon Prime or more specifically my opinion of people’s opinions, because I’ve read a lot of negative reviews and accusatory articles that call it trauma porn, which from what i’ve researched is generally for the entertainment of the group that was supposed to be the oppressor, but may not truly portray the antagonist as an antagonist. this is already a label i hesitate to use because many people who describe shows and movies as “trauma porn” rely on the argument that “black people/jewish people/etc. know their trauma in real life” and don’t need to be reminded of it on screen, which is personal preference, sure. doesn’t mean black creators aren’t allowed to portray whatever black experience they want. next they claim that suffering is not the whole of the black experience. true. but ignoring it or shying away from it as though race is not a factor in most people’s lives every single day? that should not be a requirement for black content creators, like i hope they never stop it giving a fuck that y’all don’t like it. there are PLENTY of black creators who make happy light black content that’s FREE to watch. ignoring the existence of those to pretend that the hollywood you claim to hate so much is not producing black shows and movies as though hollywood is even the deciding factor anymore is beyond me. as many short films and series by black creators as there are on youtube, patreon, anywhere that people can post their own content, it’s really upsetting to see people complain about not being “properly represented” in these white spaces, while not even fucking trying to support and uplift and PROVE THE VALUE of black creators’ work. (this goes for all poc and minority groups too) mainstream media is not the only way, and the reality is that we’re not gonna be in mainstream media without proving that our stories are profitable. for that reason alone, i don’t wish for our stories to be exploited by the mainstream and turned into capital gain anyway.

people who denounce “trauma porn” take the argument further to say that black trauma is portrayed in the media without black people in mind. so personally, i don’t know if i’m just soulless (i’m not bc i’m hurt by traumatic images all the time) but shit like this is not triggering to me. like... i find it very difficult to believe that there are ways to incite discomfort about racism in non-black people without being gruesome and harsh. someone in one of the articles i read references the book the hate u give and says it tells the reality of the black experience while protecting black people’s feelings or whatever but... if you need to be coddled and comforted just don’t fucking watch it.

i understand (kind of) not wanting stories about black people that are uncomfortable for black people to watch but at the same time if you don’t want white people to experience that same coddling and comfort about the situations at hand then it has to be brutal. i still haven’t watched When They See Us for that reason, but it seems to be the general consensus that if there isn’t a happy ending it’s “useless” or without a message. in watching Them i personally wasn’t triggered into anything but anger, but not an unfamiliar anger. the same anger i already had about how evil white people can be and still are. so for me personally, it was refreshing to see a genuine depiction of how monstrous and horrific white people have been. and i want they asses to see it too. there’s a lot of people who see it as what black people have gone through and not what white people have done, so i get why they’re triggered or whatever i guess but what i don’t get is how the black people criticizing it think no other black people should be willing or able to watch this? like i hate to frame it like “you’re just a weak ass bitch who can’t handle the truth apparently” but that’s really how it comes off. there’s no shortage of lighthearted black media that represents us without trauma. it may not be popular but it exists. get the kevonstagestudios app boo.
