never not thinking about how robots in idw have text like this

but neo metal sonic has the same text as all the organic characters

he also expresses clear emotion just like an organic person would, if not with a bit more robotic logic behind it [save when hes in a blind rage]

HE EVEN EVILLY LAUGHS AT ONE POINT

neo metal is proof that metal is VERY MUCH CAPABLE OF EMOTIONS LIKE ANY ORGANIC [if it wasnt already obvious when he's just metal] i think its sooo crazy that IDW shows metal is the most 'human' out of all the eggman robots yet he's arguably treated the worst, not even being able to Speak in his standard form.

ik sonic is just being his usual dick self here but he kinda has a point in a way. metal almost definitely WANTS to be able to talk and express himself. but he's reduced to his lesser, albeit still very powerful, form.

oh and don't even get me started...

it's so sad to me how even though he's still very capable of emotion, eggman has literally programmed out any hint of rebelliousness. like sure, it's most likely that even if eggman HADN'T programmed out metal's rebellious streak, he'd still be evil, but this leaves not even a CHANCE for redemption on metal's part.

which makes it even more ironic that sonic says this...

sonic fails to comprehend that metal literally CANNOT become a better person. eggman literally repeats what neo already told sonic, metal is programmed to kill and to be loyal to eggman. he has NO choice. hes been under eggmans control forever and when he rebelled he was beaten and reprogrammed to never be able to rebel again. metal has basically zero autonomy outside of eggman's orders [which is in great contrast to neo, who seems to be working FOR eggman's wishes, but still very much absorbed in his own power and emotions].

i don't really know what this whole ramble is about. i think while the comics seem to push the message that metal is going to be evil Forever, i also think it would be devastatingly tragic if he didn't get a redemption in the comics. y'all cant set up a horrifying depiction of abuse like this and tell me 'oh yeah and he stayed in that state forever'. i think if another fight happened at one point or another maybe they could TRY to figure out how to program OUT his anti rebellion streak? lol? even WITH that he did hesitate when sonic offered for him to be a good person again.

he literally hesitated when SONIC. IS THE ONE WHO OFFERED HIM A TRUCE. like he's literally programmed to believe sonic is his copy and he needs to kill him I don't think i can understate how insane it is that metal, despite all his programming and lack of automomy preventing it, for a split second, considered sonics offer.

The talk back and sass she spits at Sonic?

I wanna see more of that I find this shit delectable

It’s not like the attitude and emotion completely vanishes after going back to her normal form either

I doubt we'll explore that, but I am so curious how Metal feels about Sage and how their relationship is like with Eggman as well.

Sure we have seen them in TMOSTH, but come on.

So here is my overly complicated take on it! (Transferred from my Twitter, so formatting might be off)

Imagine, you have been doing your father's biddings for years, barely getting a crumb of recognition, yelled at and discarded on a whim...

And then one day your father returns from an adventure along with some AI he calls his darling little daughter and sings his praises to!

You get commands & scolding, while watching her be fully embraced...

That's Metal for ya now!

Makes me think if Metal wonders why it couldn't be him. Why Eggman just had to create Sage to finally "feel proud of his creations"

Eggman had never known familial love and affection for himself. So it's no surprise he shows nearly none to Metal- but when Sage shows up, he does.

A cruel fate, for Metal only has two tasks:

-Eliminate Sonic the Hedgehog

-Seek fatherly approval from Eggman / Love unconditionally

Task 2 seems to be the bigger priority of the two, if it truly comes down to it

He is a unable to succeed at the first task.

He will never defeat Sonic and prove himself as the "real one", no matter how hard he tries. His coding works against himself here. He can realise at times that he is not the real one... but his programming will overwrite any shape or form of progress.

Assuring that task 1 stands firm, causing him to constantly struggle with his identity as it is

And now he has to deal with competition for task 2.

Competing with a perfect golden child.

Previously it was only him + Orbot and Cubot. None of them posed any opposition at ALL. Eggman is annoyed by the two at best. They're just the invisible middle children (and prolly deserving of their own thread)

So this is new and it probably bites.

And since Ivo brought up the comparison with Maria himself- allow me to use it as well.

"Back then... was she [Maria] anything like Sage is now?"

Perhaps Ivo was somewhat like what Metal is now. Utterly undervalued & desperate to prove himself.

Intentional or not, Ivo has raised Metal Sonic with the same baggage he has. Heck, the first biodata Metal copied is Eggman's!

No wonder he tried to take over the world himself the SECOND he became Neo. Same "genes", same upbringing.

Which begs the question, in conclusion, does Metal resent Sage in similar vain to how Ivo resents Maria?

Or perhaps it's entirely different? Perhaps Metal can view Sage as his own version of Tails and learn to love her? Be charmed by her, despite it all?

I love idw comics but I gotta complain

Sonic just acts stupid this whole arc, but SPECIALLY regarding Metal

Brother Metal is quite literally lobotomized he does NOT have a choice and Sonic KNOWS THIS why dows he pretend otherwise???

METAL LITERALLY told him so to his face the previous arc, why did he forgot? Is he stupid?

Also also he CHOSE to let him go and “respect his decision”, but then goes and DOESN’T respect it when its one that he doesn’t like (again, not like it was a real choice on the first place, but IF it was, Sonic already knew that this would happen and was ok with it????)

Also, no, they DID NOT give him freedom, they literally had him there and instead of reprogramming him to stop being loyal to Eggman they just let him go. Why the hell are they acting surprised when the machine programed to follow Eggman… follows Eggman???? As programmed???? Idw is incredibly unfair to Metal, that man is a slave and the narrative blames him for it

More given the fact that Mr.tinker was in the same situation (Turning back to evil ways by something out of their choice) yet Sonic condones Mr.thinker and berates Metal for the exact same situation???? Sonic what is your moral compass on this arc I do not get you

This isn’t freedom, this is the illusion of freedom, they’re giving him an offering he really can’t take as much as he’d want to. They did absolute jackshit to help him, he lacks the agency to help himself then blame him for it

Honestly Shadow and Espio were right, the metal virus was Sonic’s fault, but not for letting Mr.Tinker live. His sin was’t his compassion toward him, his sin was expecting Metal to overwrite the coding that makes him a slave

Honestly I could make a whole rant about how much I hate Sonic’s writing in early idw but I won’t because they had gotten better and thank god he’s no longer like that
