I laugh at the fact that Norton doesn't write or read well because he simply wasn't taught it as a child like other kids. I'd love to see Robbie and Fool's Gold learn to read and write together. Two little uneducated boys.
What do you think?
gfhdjsfd that's a funny and kinda wholesome idea XD personally I think Norton was taught how to read and write when he was a child. But because of the circumstances in his life he didn't get to attend school for long, but he knows the basic. Using this post for reference. Perhaps he was taught a little from Benny as well. I also like to think he is pretty good at calculating because as money was scarce, it would have been a crucial skill to have in order to budget correctly, making sure he was given the right amount of payment, taxes etc. Every penny counts, and he cannot afford getting tricked or paying more than he should.

Identity(V) Headcanons: Norton Campbell
I'm starting off the writing blog with some of these character analysis-esque headcanons! (Starting with Norton bc he's honestly the reason I made this blog.) They'll serve both as practice for me, and examples for any readers on how I write different characters.
Again, I am new to the IDV fandom, and I have never played the game. These headcanons are informed by ongoing lore dives sourcing the wiki, japanese twitter responses, comics, stageplay, and more! Some of these may relate to or even contradict character backstory, and some of them are just pure vibes for me. If you like it, consider shooting a request ;)
Tumblr media
-Norton had always been a moodier guy, but the mining accident (and the lack of mental and emotional support he received after it) resulted in a much more obvious split of his temperaments. Without trying to put a name to something I’m no expert in, Norton has two distinct personality states which are both aware of and inform one another. The First is the more common state, wherein he is more level-headed, but prone to melancholy and isolation. His melancholy tends to be more intense after an episode with his Second state, wherein he is very likely to exhibit anger, mania, and cynicism. Likewise, his Second state tends to be more critical when he’s been uneventfully mellow for a good while. He tries his best to balance and regulate the two, but this particular emotional roller coaster is one he never had any say in getting on and has never had any assistance getting off.
-The First state typically lasts longer than the Second, sometimes stretching several days at a time. During the First, he’s at his most amicable and chatty. This is the best time to get to know him as a person.
-When in his Second state, which is usually triggered by something that reminds him of the accident, it’s better to give him a wide berth. Even in the case of a friend or partner who has thick skin and handles harshness well, Norton can become hypercritical of himself for being cruel to them.
-His mother died in childbirth, leaving Norton with only his father, who also worked himself to an early grave. Norton had to start working immediately to keep himself fed (and sometimes didn’t even manage that) so he has next to no education. He does not read or write especially well. He is also not particularly tech savvy and struggles with new concepts. That said, he's never been one to back down from a chance to improve himself, difficult or otherwise.
-Norton was mostly genuine in his visits to the elderly and sick. Many of them were other miners and laborers who helped him find his footing after his dad died. Their help may not have amounted to much in the long run, but they didn’t just look the other way and he understood the loneliness they felt on their deathbeds.
-The one exception to this was Benny, who Norton had also once looked upon in an appreciative light…until he learned how to read. It was then that he scoured his father’s old letters and discovered an infuriating truth: after the birth of Norton and the death of his mother, his father had been about to leave the mining industry. Benny was the one who convinced him to stick around and join the obsessive hunt for gold. It was through a mix of spite and desperation that Norton decided to swindle Benny out of his maps and take the chance at riches for himself.
-Norton does not talk about the mining accident. At all. Not even if he’s paid. Part of it is self-preservation—since he IS the one who stole and illegally ignited the explosives. The other part is that he is well and truly wrecked with guilt. Norton did not get along with most of his coworkers in those final days, was bullied and harassed by them, but he wanted to get ahead of them, not kill them.
-Because he’s been self-reliant from such a young age, he’s naturally distrustful of other people. He has trouble accepting people at face value and often rejects compliments, and other words of affection. He’s the embodiment of “actions speak louder than words.” In general, if someone wants to get closer to Norton they have to put their money (and their labor) where their mouth is and show a lot of patience. Any genuine relationship with Norton is hard-won.
-In line with the above, the best love language to give Norton is Acts of Service. Physical Affection would also work well once you reach a certain threshold in his trust. Gift-Giving is a decent third, but you would need to tread lightly here, lest he start to see the budding relationship as purely transactional. Holidays and birthdays are the best time to really go in on gifts for Norton, since he has a harder time arguing bribery with culturally dictated gifts.
-He genuinely does not find himself to be attractive. I wouldn’t go so far as to say he’s insecure, as he really doesn’t think about it much, but he’s least likely to accept compliments about his appearance. The burn scars certainly don’t help. If you do compliment his appearance, it’s better not to mention the scars at all than to try and make him feel better about them.
-He wholly, genuinely, hates the rich. Which is obvious enough, I suppose, but I think it’s more extreme than people give him credit for. And really it just comes down to unadulterated jealousy and bitterness, which are not easy feelings to overcome.
-Norton is of the opinion that all life is equal—and when he’s at his most cynical, this means he’s willing to take the balance of “an eye for an eye” into his own hands.
-His sweet tooth is limited to donuts and a few other carb-y baked goods. He prefers savory flavors, or sometimes bitter, such as in the case of his black coffee. He doesn’t eat as much as you might expect for his size, but he always eats quickly, and hunched over his food like it’ll be taken away. Old habits die hard.
-He has a terrible sleep schedule, due in part to frequent nightmares about the accident. He’s also somewhat claustrophobic and dislikes pitch-black spaces, so a window is a must in his bedroom. He prefers to have it open whenever reasonable.
-He doesn’t do well with thunderstorms, as the rumbles of thunder sound too much like the beginnings of a cave-in.
-If he has one singular strength, it’s perseverance. Hardships don’t deter him because he’s seen and overcome plenty. He’s a loyal friend as well, once completely won over. If he cares for you, you’ll never have to tackle a hurdle alone.

You when no idea how much I'm willing to recite the entire Identity V lore including character lore just so you'll start writing for them 💀
But I'm not going to do that unless you don't want to.
That doesn't mean I won't recite Norton's lore for you. >:3
his dad at least was a miner, his parents died when he was young so his dad's friend (Benny, the old guy in Fool's Gold's trailer) sorta raised him
-conditions were terrible in the mine, Norton really wanted more than anything to get enough money to afford to work literally anywhere else
-he heard (maybe from Benny?) rumors that a bunch of [connected?] caves might've had gold
-he [and some other miners?] investigated the caves one by one, each one had nothing
-the last one was Golden Cave
-as Prospector it seems like the supernatural entity in Golden Cave (that giant eye) influenced Norton and the other miners to make them more obsessed with potential treasure (and therefore disregarded theirs and the others' safety), but as Fool's Gold it seems it's more Norton just finally snapped at how he was treated by the other workers; regardless, Norton used explosives while the others were still deeper in the cave and caused a cave-in which killed them, Norton was also trapped but managed to escape
-Then there is the cannibal Norton theory
-the cannibalism theory was that Norton had to eat the other miners to survive but given the nature of the cave-in I doubt Norton could access them (if there was even enough of them left he could eat)
-Norton became a prospector? Basically he still works at the mines but doesn't do much actual mining/going into the caves because of his trauma
-it's unclear how he ends up at the manor; it's confirmed Orpheus wrote a book about the cave-in and in the anniversary essence trailer, he says "Your reputation precedes you Mr. Campbell", so my theory is that he's for whatever reason inviting people related to incidents he wrote about for what ends up being the final game (Frederick's family is connected to the Kreiburg Racecourse which one of his books seems to be about, and from the title of another book he seems to have written about Melly/something involving Melly too)
I'm totally not late-
Ehem anyway~
As I doubt I'd get into idv to the point I'll start writing about it, I don't mind hearing some of characters backstory!
And as for Norton omg, the cannibal theory sounds fun, even tho it's mostly unlikely to be true. I just find the concept cool somehow.
I'm getting new light on Norton and I'm loving it like, omg LORE! Gotta love it <3

i love harper veyr much such a cute little guy
are they essentially the same person throughout all of your AUs of them? like do they have any defining traits between like, youre genshin version or your identity v version? im very curious :)
oh my goshness than ku for tne ask anon!!
ive actually been very compelled to talk about this for a while, it might be a little long so ill break the page !! below will be some defining features of each version of harper :3
okie doke! harper is different in each of my versions. they share the same name and general information, as well as similar personalities, but it can vary throughout the universe they are in.
lets start with the most common on my blog, and my favorite :)
identity v !!
- seventeen years old
- born in 1881, i hc idv to be set in 1898 ( i did go on the wiki timeline to find this information... )
- they tend to be more shy and reserved, very limited to actual human interaction
- very poor at communication, often freezes up when put on the spot
- although they still work as a bard, playing songs for their town back home
- in the manor, they sometimes perform for the rest of the survivors
- they took a strong liking to andrew, tried to compliment him, proceeded to stutter their words and scurry off
- not a good look for them
- andrew took it as fear, and reserved himself further from them, very very much to harpers dismay (it only took emilys scolding to get him to realize they didnt mean harm)
- have been an unusual friendship since! theyre both shy and quiet, but andrew has a soft side that he can freely express around harper, and they feel as if they can trust him with their feelings :3 the best little/big sibling duo in the manor!
- they feel very drawn to tracy and emily, the two both very protecting of them (a bit babying, but theyll let it slide) they just enjoy their company, and often help out emily around the infirmary when survivors need any assistance.
genshin impact !!
- sixteen years old
- dont have an exact birth year ? idk what year genshin is man...
- dendro vision, living in mondstadt :)
- wields a bow, the only thing they can handle without dropping on their foot (a catalyst is far too confusing for them)
- again, a bard !! took inspiration from venti, and the two became close friends!
- still a bit reserved, but more adventurous and eager to go out and explore!!
- honorary member of bennys adventure team (i lvoe bennett... i couldnt help myslwf)
- them and razor chill out together and eat berries they find in the woods. eat berry. they love razor because they dont actually need to talk around him, the two love just sitting in silence for a while.
- is very suspicious of venti, is not stupid enough to believe that the statue of their god is NOT their best friend and the same guy who knows a bit too much about ancient history..
- i need to give them some credit, they arent stupid. just quick to act on impulse.
my dnd campaign!!
- fifteen years old
- is actually the earliest version of harper that was made, the origin!!!
- i had my first ever campaign with my friends who also didnt know how to play dnd, so we just goofed off for the most part
- i literally gave up every other skill they couldve had and negotiated with my dm to see if they could be able to magically play any instrument they found perfectly
- it worked, they can now play any instrument they want but at what cost.. they will crumble if they get slightly brushed over by the wind
- yeah so they ended up being very weak but its really no big deal
- they were on the verge of death twice, they had to sacrifice their pan flute in order to survive ( i think my dm hated them )
- sentient tree: 3, harper: 0
- they arent doing too good back there... anywya
warrior cats!! kitty time
- they are a cat dont eben hate right now
- ruffleberry!! dont ask abt the name origin i thought it sounded cute, how do cats know what a ruffle is?? idk you tell me
- medicine cat, ass cheeks at fighting so its a win in their book
- not too much about this i just wanted to draw them as a cat :3 meows meoww
so thats pretty much my main/favorite universes i feel like talking about right now, if anyone has any requests or questions about silly harper antics in any version feel free to ask i love talking about them i love my little baba :3

Matthias' full preview came out and ppl are like "finally idv remembers it's a horror game" and like?????? idv knows it's a horror game. I think it's YALL that get stuck in imagination land & interpret it as not a horror, on your own. y'all can't even accept that Nortons not a good guy. like idv is constantly being like "his nice personality is a fake performance used as a means to an end" the Ronald skin, where he's a stage actor and it's insinuating that he's only charming and likeable when he's putting on an act but when no one is watching he's desperate and greedy and only looking out for himself. his skin called "two faced". his mining director skin which has the tag line "Behind every fortunate and successful main character is a cast of foolish supporting characters.". all of this and more and I still see ppl trying to cope by being like "well he's only doing this bc he's traumatized and all he needs is ppl to care about him in order to heal" Norton HAD people who cared about him and he played the long con manipulating them in order to get what he needed from them and then dipped out once he had it. Norton didn't have a great relationship with his colleagues but he had a good relationship with Benny and his bosses absolutely loved him and gave him praise and piles of recommendation letters. and he got a full promotion, so dying in the mines and being extremely poor and having to work himself to the bone was no longer even a worry for him, on top of that HE was pioneering new magnetic technology(making a name for himself) and he STILL chose to take a hitman job to kill a woman for money. he STILL chose to go to the manor. he had remedied his situation and his greed and self preservation were still his driving force. idv is a horror game. Norton is a villain. he might have solid reasons but that doesn't excuse anything.

I've been meaning to ask but what are some headcanons for Dragon!Norton?
AWE HEEEELLLLLLZZZZ YEEAAAAA I DO 😈👏👏👏👏
Tumblr media
when it comes to the 'lady knight Alice' version of Dragon!Norton this is what I've got~
-He was born a cute wittle dragon baby from an egg so I can have that cute wittle baby dragon content LOL (I need an excuse to draw baby dRAGONS) -His mom was out of the picture but his dad was there until Norton was 8 and could take a human form so he dropped him off with lameo human Benny for protection only for the dad to never make it back. -So Norton spent a LOT of his time human actually. But Benny not being a very good teacher at all and mostly leaving him to his own devices and found he had a knack for finding gemstones and precious minerals. Benny seeing the opportunities here and taking advantage. (Cause I am still sussy about Benny, I am throwing him down the 'he not okay' bin for using Norton -squints at Benny-) -as the years go by Norton is pretty run down from always diggin for gems and such. When 'old enough' he would be 'rented out' to help dig and search for Benny's 'friends' as well. They weren't his friends just people doing business with Benny and to get Norton to go with them he would call them 'friends' and how 'we always help our friends' 😑 and would always caution Norton to 'never ever show what you really are. Keep it all hidden' 🤡 so the main way he can protect himself is not an option, and if he doesn't realize his true worth and potential then he can't rebel 🙃. uhg I hate this Benny so much. -But there comes that time when Norton figures it out and the quiet rebellion begins and he can finally bring a mountain down on all the people who used him and then abandon Benny cause YEA 👏👏👏 -Him a big big dragon by the time of Alice rolls around. And he is causing all sorts of problems for any and all people who happen to live near where he decides to hunker down. He is not too keen on sleeping in caves and prefers laying in groves big enough for him and just out in the plains. But he does have a hoard and keeps it at the very top of a particular mountain so he doesn't have to be underground in any capacity. -His hoard is difficult to get to for peoples, but not impossible so Norton is sure to be aware of his stuffs. -He cannot stand people after the whole Benny fiasco, until Alice pops up and his is like 'she is interesting, not sure if I want to take her armor to gnaw on or if I want to actually know her' lol and that is when he starts using his human form again. -Since he had to spend so much of his growing up life in human form its like his dragon form is rebelling when he returns to human form again. Making his body hurt and feel uncomfortable when he is in human form for too long. And that is why that tail and horns of his keep popping out when his emotions are riled in anyway. -When he is upset steam shoots from his nostrils ppffff. It is so hard for him to hide that he is a dragon now, but if he doesn't feel safe, and can't reveal he is a dragon for whatever reason, then he is on his 'A-game'.
I am sure I have got LOADS more but this is what is on the top of my head 👏👏👏👏🤣

I'm wondering if the letters mentioned in the Fool's Gold deducts happen to be some of Norton's birthday letters... Like, the one mentioned in Shrewd might be the fourth birthday letter... And the one mentioned in Gloomy was the first birthday letter... Just a thought.
Oh damn you're probably right 👀 (my thirst for new letters blinded me LOL) Especially how the one is titled 'UNSENT LETTER' and the other is 'OLD LETTER' (with the letter, in shrewd, being compared as yellow and brittle, that is one old af letter like one that would have been given to his dad, and was signed simply as Benny oh my gooosshh) BAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA 🤣🤣🤣
If that is Benny's unsent letter then that might mean that was stuff found with Benny's things and 'abandoned' which makes me think that Benny is hella dead already (OR just threw it all away cause Norton peaced the hell outta there). Which also makes me wonder if he never-- -chokes- wait a minute, is that all stuff he had for Norton but never gave to him?? Including the quilt and he never gave it to Norton when he was a kid?? What the? Makes me think the dad had died and BENNY NEVER WENT TO CHECK ON NORTON OR CHECK UP PERSONALLY, THE FUH?????
Tumblr media
I can try and throw the benefit of the doubt and say something like 'maybe he was in a mine far away (but is sounds like they worked at the same mine), couldn't get away from work and 'his family'? He does mention 'our children' so maybe?' but it I DON"T KNOW! I feel like if he wanted to check in personally he WOULD HAVE 😤
Now I just see Norton reading that letter over and over again once he learns to read being like 'who is this benny who promises hope but never shows? I want to eat cake and wear nice clothes....' From as soon as he could read having the promise of hope but wondering where the hell is the guy who promises it. Then finally getting a letter from that Benny guy again AGES LATER??? WHAT THEEEEEEE

HI HI HI HI! For starters, i love your norton and nortalice art! It is the reason i started following you because i had just recently back into IDV and those two were on my mind.
Mainly thanks to a weird dream i had, but not the time and place for dream discussion dhdh. But i just wanna yapper in her about headcanons or what, mainly just the idea of Norton coming off as very cold and assholeish because that is what he is used too, and Alice slowly breaking that away with kindness, melting the ice on Norton’s heart. So by himself, Norton can and will be a dick, beats being used. But with Alice, he comes off as more tired but warm. He speaks in a warm low voice reserved solely for her. He’s not charamstic in what he aays but he is truthful and whispers all the love be can into each syllable. Alice is his Golden Canary. She led him from the darkness and dangers into the dazzling sun, it is only right he treats her with the tenderness she gave him
B'aaaaawwwWWWW Thank youu 🥹🥹 👏👏👏👏👏👏 -applauds, applauds A LOT- THIS ALL OF THIS 10000000% and the 'Golden Canary' -writes that down- PERFECTION 🤌🤌
He absolutely would come off as such a prick and honestly rightly so, he has been through so much and having to survive on his own at such a young age. Then according to the most recent trailer about him, was abused as well from stronger coworkers. Likely just because he was working so hard to change his life, that can really piss off people who are not willing to do the same and just want drag people down with them to make themselves feel better. He would learn pretty quick how to survive in any situation including on a conversational level, since he is so good at getting people to open up to him and tell him things.
By the time we see him in the mansion is is definitely jaded/numb even, closed off, and has that 10000 mile long far off stare. It would be difficult to get into that head of his and figure out what he is thinking. His sentences would be short and vague to an irritating degree lol
Alice has her work cut out for her for SURE. But she is so gentle, direct, and interesting with how she goes about things and that is exactly what he needs, patience and kindness. He might take advantage at first cause that is how he is programmed by this point, but eventually the sincerity from Alice would chip at his rock solid heart.
I imagine his love languages are gifts, acts of service and, after a long while: physical touch. With all the physical violence of where he used to work, marks still visible from his time there, I bet touch is something reserved for the highest tier of trust and love. And why it would mean so much to feel soft gentle touch.
I think Alice would be similar in that regard to physical touch, with how her life went with the experiments and such. She would require that gentle care which Norton would know how to do from his time studying rocks and gems and having to handle some with care as to not mess with the integrity of gently formed ones.
The love language, I believe, they would both not be overly fond of is 'words of affirmation' since they both know how words can get them anywhere when used correctly so words would be useless to them if not backed by action. BUT when they are at the highest level of trust between them, those words they share with each other would mean the world ;;
I also think they would work GREAT together 👏👏Norton knows people, he could get her interviews with just about anyone in the lower class (at least with those he hadn't double crossed. srry Benny). With him vouching for her she wouldn't be viewed as this outsider rich girl, but welcomed. Then Alice would be able to get him in places and get clients he wouldn't have gotten before. And also showing him the finer way of living. and to not spend all his money so quickly. Oh my gosh, my mind just reminded me of Titanic a bit with this tangent 🤣 shows her his way of life and she shows him her way of life.
oh my GOSH I went on and ON LOL I will hold back now so this doesn't become an ACTUAL NOVEL 🤣
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE ASK 🥹🥹
