Hi!! idk if you already talked about this (sorry if you did!) but what is your opinion on how druck use social media and texts for the show? Do you think they rely on it too much (literally having plots in text messages without talking about it on the show... I feel bad for casual viewers) or you think it’s fine like that?
Hi anon! 🎺 I think this ask just about covers it.
As for whether Druck is too reliant on sm, I have some thoughts on that:
1. I think Druck relies too much on sm for fun filler content. I think they should definitely try to include more character building content into the episodes themselves. While I understand that Druck has a limited runtime, I think they’ve more than proven with this season that they can do 19 minutes of solid plot, and they could add more character-defining moments and character beats into the episode, which can then be edited out if the episodes are shown on TV. Funk used to edit the Druck episodes down to 20 minutes, but this isn’t really a concern anymore because s5 and s6 haven’t been shown on TV, not even as binge events.
2. Other than that, I think the sm content isn’t necessary to follow the plot for the most part, except for maybe last week. Kieu My took a social media break of sorts to go gallivant in Brandenburg, and I believe it wasn’t made explicit on the episode itself, but then Fatou called Kieu My out on running away.
3. I have gotten the impression both with s5 and s6, that Druck uses social media to build the universe (and characters) outside of the main’s POV. In Skam, because social media wasn’t used so much, the side characters would rarely have shit of their own going on.
In that sense, they sort of existed almost as props (to a certain extent, I’m overstating it a bit to make my point) to the main. As an example, do we know what was going on in Eva, Vilde, Chris, Sana and Isak’s lives during Noora’s season? To the same extent that we know what’s going on with Ava, Nora, Mailin, Ismail or Josh? Like yes, we knew that Eva was struggling with her alcohol consumption because Jonas started dating someone else, and we know Vilde had tons of resentment over Noora’s actions, and Sana was fighting with her sister-in-law (top 10 Skams plot that you wish were taken out), and Chris hooked up with Casper and Isak moved into the basement, but we only knew about these things as they impacted Noora’s life (because Eva’s drunkenness annoyed the shit out of Noora for instance), or when they became relevant in Noora’s life.
Fatou doesn’t really care all that much about Ava and Marc’s relationship and it in no way impacts her life, but we know a few details thanks to the use of sm. Same with Kieu My and Finn chatting in Vietnamese, Zoe going straight edge, Nora and Josh establishing boundaries in their relationship, and so on. This helps land the point that “everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about”, but at the same time, this content is completely optional. If you want to submerge yourself completely in Fatou’s POV, then you can simply watch the episodes, follow one or two IGs, and only read the chats sent from Fatou’s phone.
