CW for some slight body/eye horror
It was like a horrible nightmare, where the sky was an endless void, and all sense of direction was meaningless. The hellish realm was haunted by a dark serpent, roaming free within its constraints. The red tips of its tendrils trailing behind as the beast circled a lone rocky platform.
A misplaced merchant awoke, stranded on the floating rock. As he came to, the beast met his eyes, its red gaze piercing, burning through. Volo gasped, completely unaware of his surroundings, or lack thereof, and took a step back in shock. It was then that the empty space around him became known. He quickly turned himself around to ensure that yes, the endless beyond was in fact endless.
The serpent moved to face Volo once more, closing the space between them. Its large body wrapped around Volo, almost ensnaring him in place. It made a loud hiss at the man. Volo studied it, trying to keep his fear down. His quickened breath slowed to a calmer pace, and he felt an urge to reach out to the beast. The beast closed its eyes and lowered its head, allowing Volo to touch it.
“You are the third,” Volo spoke slowly. “You are Giratina.”
The beast made a soft sound.
“You can help me?” Volo asked, opening his eyes. “And I can help you…”
Giratina screeched out, and suddenly Volo was enveloped in complete darkness.
When he awoke, Volo was back in the labyrinth of Turnback Cave. He was in one piece, nothing out of place or broken. He looked down, however, and something new was at his feet. A purple stone plate. Volo picked it up, carefully examining its sides. He noticed something was inscribed on the plate, a language he could just barely make out.
"The other side of this world was given by the Original One to its raging third."
He knew instantly what the text was referring to. He pocketed the plate into his backpack, and prepared to make his way out of the cave. Though, as he turned, he noticed something odd about his shadow. It seemed as if it was moving on its own. He looked around, failing to find any proper light source. The room was deathly silent. Empty, except for him and his thoughts alone.
Volo left the room, hoping that it was just his mind playing tricks on him.
Turnback Cave was a mysterious labyrinth. Almost impossible to navigate, having to rely purely on luck to find the end. Many times had Volo been sent back to the entrance, turned around not by his own volition. Pure relief washed over the merchant as he was immediately returned to the entrance. It certainly was easier to leave the cave than it was to enter it.
The bright sunlight scorched his face as Volo reached the top of the hill. He had never been bothered by the rays of the sun, but perhaps his time in the cave was enough to make him accustomed to the darkness. He didn’t think much of it, and made his way down.
The cool sea breeze welcomed Volo as he approached the beach. He had been walking nonstop and was in desperate need of a nap. He found a cool tree to sit under, relieving himself of the large backpack full of goods.
Volo took out a pokeball, and released a togepi out to join him. He smiled warmly as his little friend.
“Hey there girl,” he spoke sweetly. “Just a quick rest and we’ll be back to the others soon, okay?”
Togepi chirped cheerfully, and motioned upwards. Volo let out a soft chuckle and picked up the pokemon in a swift swoop. She made happy little squeaks, waving her stubby arms about.
Together, they rested in the shade of the tree, facing the ocean, with togepi sitting quietly in Volo’s lap.
A short time passed before Volo was jolted awake by a frightened togepi. She was on the verge of tears, using her little arms to bap Volo’s chest. He quickly scanned the area, looking for any threats, but there were none. He sighed, and wrapped his arms around his friend.
“It’s okay, nothing is going to hurt you. You’re safe.” He cooed the pokemon, lightly patting her.
Togepi was still not okay, she shook her head, still trying to keep her tears in. She was looking up, above Volo’s head. She tried to cry out, stumbling over her own little sounds.
Volo looked up, only to see the branches of the tree and the cool swaying leaves. He stood up, holding togepi close to him, and turned to look behind him. Nothing was behind the tree either.
“Look, my friend. Nothing of danger.” He gazed down at togepi, who stared at him with frightful, unconvinced eyes. Volo sighed, ready to give up. “Perhaps I should return you to your pokeball, will you feel safer there?” he asked.
Togepi was unmoved, so Volo made the final decision for her. He reached for the pokeball sitting at his feet, and moved to return the pokemon. It was finally then, that it caught his eye.
His shadow, casted against the large trunk of the tree, stared back at him with bright, cold eyes. Its shape not his own, moving independently of Volo. His shadow was Giratina.
Without breaking eye contact, Volo quietly returned Togepi to her ball. He now understood where her fear had stemmed from, and he too felt frightened at the sight. He reached out to touch it, to make sure it was real, and Giratina opened a bright red smile at him.
As his hand met with the beast, a flash of darkness overcame him. For a brief moment, his chest felt empty, as if his insides were floating upwards. The sound of the ocean waves disappeared, replaced by fuzz. Deep in his head, at the back of his mind, Volo heard a voice.
We go to the heavens.
Volo gasped for air as Giratina’s grip on him loosened. His shadow was still being occupied by the beast. He rested against the tree, Giratina moving its body so as to not be obstructed by the merchant.
“The heavens?” he asked aloud, still catching his breath. “How am I supposed to reach there?”
I will take us there. Giratina rang again in Volo’s head. Coronet, it spoke.
Somehow, and for some reason, Volo understood and accepted the beast's demand. Mount Coronet was home to the Temple of Sinnoh, a place said to be the closest point to the heavens. If his ultimate goal was to meet the Original One, that would be the place to go.
“I can get us there,” Volo said. “But I have to resupply first.” He was met with no response, which he took to mean he was understood.
He took up his backpack, tightening his belt and securing his hat. The sea breeze blew coldly on his face, rustling his hair to the side. As he stepped out from under the shade, the sunlight burned on the newly exposed part of his face. Volo’s eye began to burn, an intense itching overcoming him. Volo yelped out, rushing to cover his eye with his hands. His eye teared up, the pain getting to him.
Water, he thought, the water!
The merchant rushed to the ocean’s shore, clambering down on his knees and cupping some water in his hands. He splashed his face until the burning sensation had cooled. Pushing aside his now wet hair, he looked into the water to see what was wrong.
The white of his left eye was a dark abyss, with his pupil a scorching bright red. It was just like that of his new companion. Behind him, Giratina swayed about along the sand, its tendrils reaching out towards Volo as he was kneeled down.
Volo took a moment to compose himself. He redid his hair, tightening the bun so that his bangs were less likely to move in the breeze, and to ensure his eye was protected. He could not let anyone see it. Not that he regularly had it showing anyway, but now it was truly important.
He sighed. What did he get himself into? It would be worth it, he tried to convince himself. It needed to be.
He rose up from his spot on the beach, adjusted his backpack and swept off the sand from his pants and apron. He wiped his face, and turned away from the shore. Looking down, he saw Giratina staring at him with curious eyes. Volo took a deep breath, and began walking back towards the mirelands.
