just got reminded of "Liu" in Liu'er Mihou being treated as a name by itself... and so the "er" at the end is...a kind of sweet addition because "er" is an honorific/diminutive used for like childhood friends. it's cute and carries affection in that way, like someone you know well. A close friend.

so calling macaque "Liu'er" is Wukong basically treating "Liu" as Macaque's given name and adding that 'er diminutive affectionately. Obviously, this is something he did when they were mates before and he also had other names for him that are very intimate.

the fact that Macaque lets this slide and doesn't snap at Wukong about it means that he likes being called that, too 🥺💕
