Full offence but if you give people (more specifically teenagers/adults) shit for using gutter guards while bowling I am literally begging you to take a moment to self-reflect and consider the fact that you might have at least a little bit of deep-seated ableism to work through.

And I don’t mean that as ‘don’t make fun of people who use gutter guards because they might be disabled’. I mean, yeah, sure, a person might be using gutter guards because they have a disability that affects their ability to bowl (be it an issue of strength, coordination, vision, etc.) But, ya know, maybe they’re just a neurotypical able-bodied person who isn’t that great at bowling and, God forbid, doesn’t want to spend money just to roll a whole game of gutter balls. I don’t care if you think it’s not ‘real bowling’. You’re bowling for fun, not the fucking Olympics. It literally doesn’t fucking matter.

The real issue I’m trying to get at, though, is that if you give people shit for using some sort of aid to make their bowling experience more enjoyable, all you’re doing is contributing to the stigma disabled people face when it comes to altering activities to make their everyday lives easier/more enjoyable.

Ok, so I’m about to be vulnerable on the internet (big mistake, I know, but oh well).

I was diagnosed with autism less than a year ago, and every day since then has been a journey of unlearning the casual ableism that society has instilled in me for basically my whole life. I’m much better now than I was, but I’m still not perfect. I still struggle with internalised ableism much more than I’d like to admit.

I still get anxious about stimming in public. Even though I know stimming is good for me, and that forcing myself to not stim can lead, and has led, to emotional meltdowns and violent outbursts that could’ve easily been avoided had I not been so preoccupied with not wanting strangers to think I was ‘weird’.

I’ve only very recently started having my security blanket on my lap while I drive because I’ve realised it helps prevent me from getting stressed while I drive. Which is fucking great, because getting stressed while operating an entire fucking tonne of motorised metal is extremely dangerous, both to me and to others.

You know, I started crying while writing that. I started fucking crying because of how embarassed I was to tell the internet that I, an 18 year old, have a security blanket.

And this is exactly the point I’m trying to make. It doesn’t matter how insignificant taking the piss out of someone for using gutter guards while bowling may seem, it still feeds into the stigma disabled people face on a daily basis. It affects me so fucking much, and I have pretty low support needs, so I can’t even imagine how much it must affect disabled people with greater support needs.

Idk. Call me crazy, but I just think that whatever you need to do to make your life easier/more enjoyable you should be able to do it without judgement. That goes for disabled and non-disabled people alike. There’s literally no reason for you to spend your finite years on earth struggling unnecessarily.
