YEAH! it obvs doesn’t follow the parable because the man in the saw furnace very much doesn’t survive (also this story is interesting from a jewish vs christian perspective bc its told in both but the fourth figure vibes are different bc christians say it was jesus or a form of him instead of an angel)
but there’s lots of biblical references in this movie but especially old testament!
john himself is playing god by building traps, i always have read it as a way to feel like he has power bc due to his heath situation he is very powerless. he believes he’s helping his victims by having them confront their sins, he thinks he is bringing them salvation (but at what cost? amanda suffers immensely from mental trauma after her first saw experience, and while she’s clean from drugs, she moves onto other self destructive coping mechanisms)
saw 3 talks a lot about like forgiveness in the way that jeff has to essentially forgive the people he blames for his son’s death by helping them which is also very biblical but also just the general themes of obedience vs disobedience is very old testament + themes of disaster brought on by god (or john kramer lol)
Watched saw 2 and 3 today and I don't really have the capacity to articulate my thoughts properly but I'm thinking about John Kramer and his savior complex and how it ties into christianity/religion bc 3 especially had a lot of christian imagery/references (johns emphasis on Jeff's forgiveness, Timothy's trap literally being a crucifixion, etc.) and @femmeofarc pointed out that one of the traps (I don't remember which) reminded them of a parable and just,,, idk rotating the idea in my mind
