Que serait Tintin sans sa houpette rousse ? Lucky Luke sans son foulard rouge ? Bref, que serait la bande dessinée sans le travail minutieux et discret des coloristes ? Essentiel, leur rôle est pourtant très peu reconnu, en tout cas de ce côté de l’Atlantique. Mais la colère gronde.

Un métier de chien. Quand ils évoquent leur quotidien, les coloristes ont rarement les yeux qui brillent. Il est plutôt question de cadences infernales, de délais de fou, de journées interminables passées devant l’écran de son ordinateur à mettre en couleurs les planches en noir et blanc qu’ils reçoivent des dessinateurs de bande dessinée. Un travail minutieux, chronophage, souvent fait dans l’urgence, qui « bouffe les yeux », provoque lombalgies et tendinites. Ils sont une grosse cinquantaine en France à en vivre à plein temps, et sans doute le double à l’exercer de façon provisoire ou complémentaire d’une autre activité. « Personne n’a vocation à faire ce métier, c’est trop spécialisé, explique Clémence Sapin, on y entre toujours par hasard, presque par accident. » Au début des années 2000, pendant ses études de psychologie, la jeune femme accepte pour s’amuser et gagner un peu d’argent de donner un coup de main à Mathieu, son frère dessinateur… Depuis, elle n’a pas arrêté et collabore aussi à de nombreuses publications jeunesse.

Un parcours qui, curieusement, n’a rien de singulier. Derrière chaque coloriste se tient souvent un copain, ou une petite amie qui un jour a voulu rendre service. La tradition remonte aux origines de la bande dessinée franco-belge, quand les dessinateurs, déjà sous pression, confiaient le lettrage (la transcription de leurs textes) et les couleurs de leurs planches à leur épouse — ou, lorsqu’il existait des studios, à des équipes de petites mains. À l’époque, les couleurs étaient directement peintes sur des tirages papier, confiés ensuite aux imprimeurs. Si l’avènement de l’informatique et de Photoshop, au milieu des années 1990, a révolutionné le métier, l’anonymat, lui, est resté. Tout au bout de la chaîne de création, les coloristes demeurent les invisibles de la BD.

Des rapports subtils avec les dessinateurs

Leur rôle est pourtant crucial. Difficile d’imaginer Tintin sans sa houppette rousse, Obélix sans ses braies bleu et blanc, Lucky Luke sans son foulard écarlate. Et, sans son pelage canari, le Marsupilami serait bien fade… Des madeleines certes, mais pas seulement. Comme l’observait avec justesse le peintre Eugène Delacroix dans son journal, « la couleur est la partie de l’art qui détient le don magique. Alors que le sujet, la forme, la ligne s’adressent d’abord à la pensée, la couleur n’a aucun sens pour l’intelligence, mais elle a tous les pouvoirs sur la sensibilité ». Que seraient les grandes séries BD brutalement privées de couleurs ? Une suite de vignettes qui, telles quelles, auraient du mal à s’enchaîner, à fonctionner ensemble.

Que les mangas et les romans graphiques, en noir et blanc, soient plus denses et plus longs ne doit rien au hasard : il leur faut souvent plus de cases pour fluidifier le récit, faire passer des émotions, installer un climat. La couleur, elle, apporte aux images la lumière, l’heure du jour, le sens de la profondeur et de l’espace, mais renseigne aussi sur la psyché des personnages, l’ambiance d’une scène, le climat général de l’histoire. « C’est le premier contact avec l’album, estime le dessinateur Matthieu Bonhomme (Le Voyage d’Esteban, Charlotte impératrice, L’Homme qui tua Lucky Luke). Ce qui dans la librairie attire l’œil, donne envie de le feuilleter, de l’acheter ou non. Le lecteur découvre toujours les BD à rebours. D’abord la couleur, puis le dessin, et ensuite l’histoire. La séduction est une subtile affaire de tons, d’harmonies et de nuances. Mieux vaut ne pas se louper ! » Un enjeu qui pèse sur les relations entre dessinateurs et coloristes.

« Rares sont ceux qui viennent me trouver en sachant exactement ce qu’ils veulent, et heureusement , sourit Delphine Chédru, sinon mon travail n’aurait guère d’intérêt. » Illustratrice de livres pour enfants, la Parisienne, qui a notamment travaillé avec Émile Bravo, Matthieu Bonhomme et Joann Sfar, fonctionne à l’admiration. « Je ne dessine pas, mais je suis fascinée par le trait, les planches en noir et blanc que je découvre. Certains dessinateurs sont d’authentiques grands artistes qui imaginent non seulement les histoires, mais aussi les personnages, les décors, la mise en scène. Pour passer autant de temps sur l’œuvre d’un autre, il faut être motivé. » Reste à entamer le dialogue, à trouver des références et un langage communs, chose peu aisée, car, en matière de couleur, le vocabulaire courant s’avère vite limité. « Les dessinateurs ont souvent une perception floue et intuitive de ce qu’ils veulent et ont beaucoup de mal à l’exprimer. Le plus difficile est de capter, de deviner cette petite musique, et de leur proposer quelque chose qui s’y accorde, même si c’est inattendu. Il faut beaucoup écouter l’autre sans s’oublier ni manquer de personnalité. »

Un art de “l’accouchement des âmes”

Cet art de la maïeutique, de « l’accouchement des âmes », Isabelle Merlet le pratique en experte. À 52 ans, la coloriste, installée en Gironde dans une petite maison qui domine les vignes, est devenue une référence, l’une des rares à se battre pour sortir la profession de l’ombre. Très sollicitée, elle choisit ses collaborations (Blutch, Catherine Meurisse, Jean-Marc Rochette), les enchaîne à son rythme (deux à cinq albums par an) et tient un blog où elle explique et montre le cœur de son travail. À ses yeux, le rôle du coloriste s’apparente à celui du chef opérateur, le responsable des lumières sur un tournage, voire à celui d’un compositeur de musiques de film. « Même si le dessinateur reste le seul maître à bord, nous partageons un idéal commun, porter au plus haut le potentiel de son œuvre. Les planches en noir et blanc que je reçois sont comme une partition de musique, à moi, tout en restant au service du récit, de l’interpréter, de jouer les solistes. » Une vision qui ne cadre pas forcément avec celle de l’auteur, ayant souvent du mal à confier son « bébé » à des bras étrangers et multipliant les recommandations.

« Je passe beaucoup de temps à discuter avec eux, à éplucher les références qu’ils m’envoient, des images glanées dans des films ou d’autres albums. Évidemment je m’en imprègne, mais la vraie création ne peut pas reposer uniquement sur la mémoire ou la répétition de quelque chose d’existant, il n’y a pas de recette. Il faut chercher, travailler, essayer, et soudain la couleur jaillit et s’impose comme une évidence. » Quitte à violer parfois quelques tabous, en remplaçant par exemple le noir du trait d’origine par du mauve comme sur Lune l’envers, de Blutch. Des choix audacieux qui expliquent donc qu’un grand auteur comme Taiyô Matsumoto ait tenu à ce qu’elle mette en couleur son manga Les Chats du Louvre. Ou qu’un Français comme Jean Harambat (Opération Copperhead, Le Detection Club) vante la créativité d’Isabelle Merlet, « son regard artistique, sa capacité à comprendre au-delà des mots et à traduire l’ironie en gamme Pantone ». D’autres en revanche s’en agacent. Sa collaboration longtemps étincelante avec Blutch s’est achevée avec perte et fracas sur le dernier album du virtuose, Mais où est Kiki ? L’ego et les couleurs, parfois

« L’Europe nourrit encore cette illusion que la bande dessinée est le fait d’une seule personne, sans aide extérieure », affirme José Villarrubia. Coloriste vedette des plus grands éditeurs de comics américains, collaborateur attitré de Richard Corben, le maestro espagnol, qui vit depuis des lustres aux États-Unis, s’étonne qu’on puisse « encore laisser croire que le travail n’est pas divisé entre dessinateur, encreur, coloriste et calligraphe » — en France particulièrement, où depuis le XIXe siècle on a mis l’auteur sur un piédestal, en oubliant que tout objet imprimé est le fruit d’un travail collectif.

Un certain mépris cultivé par les éditeurs

Du côté des éditeurs, un grand flou entoure les coloristes. Si en privé ils reconnaissent volontiers qu’un bon coloriste peut sublimer un trait ou nourrir un dessin un peu pauvre, rares sont ceux (excepté Guy Delcourt) qui mettent leurs noms sur la couverture des albums. Pas question non plus de les créditer comme coauteurs, car ce statut, expliquent-ils, leur donnerait un droit de regard sur l’œuvre et, en cas de désaccord, la possibilité de bloquer une série en cours. « Foutaises ! C’est juste une question de gros sous », s’indigne Christian Lerolle. Pilier de l’Atelier 510 TTC, à Reims, et très actif au sein du Syndicat national des auteurs et compositeurs (Snac), le coloriste a depuis vingt-cinq ans travaillé pour la plupart des éditeurs de BD. « Les éditeurs brandissent ce genre d’argument pour ne pas avoir à nous verser de droits d’auteur. Ils nous paient à la page ou au forfait selon des barèmes très variables (de 50 à 120 euros la page). Pour le reste, c’est au bon vouloir des dessinateurs, qui peuvent, s’ils le d��sirent, nous reverser une partie de leurs royalties, sous forme de rétrocession. Ce qui évidemment ne les arrange pas, tant aujourd’hui les contrats sont serrés. L’éditeur, lui, s’en bat l’œil du moment qu’il n’a pas à mettre la main au porte-monnaie ! »

Des usages un brin cyniques que l’invisibilité des coloristes rend possibles. Alors que les prix les plus prestigieux de la BD américaine (Eisner, Harvey) leur sont depuis longtemps accordés, rien de semblable n’existe de ce côté de l’Atlantique. Pas de récompenses, d’expositions, ni de mise en valeur au festival d’Angoulême ou dans d’autres institutions ou manifestations nationales. Idem du côté des écoles de BD, qui ne proposent aucune formation spécifique. Bref, il reste bien du chemin à parcourir, et le ministre de la Culture, qui a voulu placer 2020 sous le signe du neuvième art, serait bien inspiré de saisir l’occasion. Il est grand temps que la BD défende enfin ses couleurs.

008. what are you doing for a living / what are you studying?

2017: lmAO well rn i work in the kitchen of a gas station (sah classy). 2020: went from working in the store to working in corporate *finger guns* apparently i never said what i was studying but i was still in school then. justice studies with a minor in military leadership and certifications in human rights and socio-legal studies. then i studied astrophysics with minors in cyber intel + security and math for a semester, but i didn’t want any more debt ajskdf

009. what’s your dream occupation?

2017: IDK but it has to involve happiness and a nice salary. i have to feed my zoo somehow. 2020: what r dreams lmao

2017: single then. single now. single forever. 2020: every time i think about putting myself out there, something happens. i don’t have time to date atm

011. coffee, tea or hot chocolate?

2017: it depends on the weather. if it’s cold i’ll have hot chocolate. i usually drink tea at meals whenever though. 2020: i blame my work for all the coffee i drink now, but still all of the above.

2017: santorini 2020: honestmeme....where the hell did i pull santorini from. idk i was supposed to go to iceland for study abroad last year but yknow i withdrew from the university. i still wanna go tho

2017: not afraid to stand up for myself + others 2020: young me made it sound noble but honestly i’ll put ppl in their place, i don’t have patience anymore jakdas. but tbh right now i guess it’s my perseverance? life has been shitty for a few months but u gotta keep on truckin’

014. tell us a bit about your family!

2017: goD they’re nuts. i’m the middle child out of all my siblings but the youngest on my dad’s side. large age gaps are common, like half my sisters are old enough to be my mom. lots of grand babies and great grand babies. when we’re all together (like this past weekend) it’s ….wild. communication is v poor too. i only have one brother out of my eight siblings, and all those siblings are only half-related to me. at 5′5 i’m one of the tallest in the fam which says a lot. 2020: they’re still nuts n i don’t speak to my mother anymore. i should probs add that my parents have been divorced since i was a few months old so she hasn’t been in the pic for a while. even when she had custody of me jaksldf find me ron howard i’ll give him the rights to my life story

015. how long have you known your closest friend?

2017: three years. 2020: we’re going on 6 years jaksdf i’ll be maid of honor in her wedding this year. i also have another friend that i failed to mention last time but we’ve been close for 9 years (jfc)

2017: sports !!! i’m a grade a heaux for sports. tennis, archery, golf. anything that doesn’t require lots of muscle ya feel. one of my ~hobbies~ i guess is organizing things. i have multiple planners and use them all daily. 2020: i miss how sporty n active i was jkasdf this is my hobby.

021. where would you like to live in the future?

2017: i would looooooove to live in san diego but i’ll probs be stuck in the desert drylands. 2020: tbh i was looking into memphis homes bc it’s cheap compared to here but i don’t really care where i end up. just want a place of my own yknow
