Although I did enjoy At the Feet of the Sun and feel like it’s ~somewhat more strongly written (especially in terms of pacing/structure. Decidedly less so in terms of copy editing) than The Hands of the Emperor, I think my main disappointment with it (aside from my usual beef with sequels wrt continuity &c.) is that THOTE is such a weaving of magic and unfurling humanity that the vast mythicizing in ATFOTS feels both jarringly counter to THOTE’s whole ethos and…almost a bit hollow despite being quite a fun romp and having some elements that are genuinely v impactful
#I’m torn on whether I hold this as actual criticism wrt themes and storytelling#vs personal disappointment#but it is decidedly the latter#possibly also a little the former but I can sway myself in either direction#idk I think about the most spectacular and high glory scene in THOTE#and at the heart of it is two people being able to touch for the first time#and then ATFOTS is so so so chock full of spectacle#but the scene that matters most to me is a rlly messy and human conversation partway thru the book#personal
