Lost Memories: Bang Bravern & Metallic Rouge, Ep 10

“Not all memories are good, you know?” —Ash Stahl

I was watching the 10th episode of Metallic Rouge where one of the Immortals, Eden/Noir, an android, lost his ID (a transparent sphere that contains all their personality, memories, etc. that is part of the immortals’ makeup) and everything became hazy. His memories began to fade away. He knew he had a lover (Jill/Flash Silvia) and a family, his Nean family. He even knew the beginning notes of Debussy’s “Clair de lune” but totally forgot the entirety of the piano piece. Naomi thought it was so unfortunate that she felt sad for the Nean. According to Jaron, once all his memories were gone, he’d die. Eden/Noir’s life connects himself to his memories.

On the other hand, compared to the future defeated Bravern whose memory was still intact, his remembrance of a particular encounter with the Japanese crew in Hawaii discovering the tonkatsu curry left a mark on his mind. It was a small thing, probably insignificant to some, yet for Lewis/Bravern a big deal that aided Lulu to decide once and for all to rectify the past. The moment she heard Bravern, busloads of reminiscences from both Lewis Smith and Bravern flowed in her mind.

“Japanese curry was really good.”

As for the viewers who watched that scene, it was a painful one. The dying Bravern/Lewis’ last words. The sound of his internal machine whirring in the background, not functioning. The show runners’ attempt to blend humour with death was fascinating. In the end, there was only the impending gloom and hopelessness and a defeated Bravern and Isami’s corpse.

Good news, the whole thing can be reversed.

Gim Video

Gim video adalah bagian penting hidupku. Konsol pertamaku adalah Sega Genesis Megadrive 16-bit yang dibeli menjelang lulus taman kanak-kanak di Banda Aceh. Dua gim pertama adalah Street Fighter II dan QuackShot Starring Donald Duck. Dua-duanya aku tamatkan di kelas satu sekolah dasar. 

Street Fighter adalah gim tarung yang jauh lebih sulit dari Tekken. Mungkin karena dia tampil dua dimensi sehingga terkesan kaku. Sedangkan Tekken sedari awal muncul dengan tiga dimensi dan lebih fleksibel. Aku ingat menamatkan Street Fighter II dengan Blanca. Seorang ilmuwan yang mengorbankan diri jadi monster listrik untuk percobaannya. Atau karena percobaan gagal lalu jadi monster? Aku kurang ingat dan tidak berniat menelusurinya lewat mesin pencari.

QuackShot tentu lebih mudah. Melompat-lompat dengan Donald Bebek yang dilengkapi pistol yang bisa mengeluarkan alat sedot tinja. Seingatku pistolnya juga bisa mengeluarkan permen karet. Salah satu gim platform terbaik yang pernah aku mainkan.

Sepanjang ingat, kaset Sega-ku mencapai dua puluhan lebih. Gim saduran biopik Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Streets of Rage, Mortal Kombat, beberapa seri FIFA dan Pro Evolution Soccer lalu yang lain lupa atau tidak terlalu berkesan. Harga kaset Sega di jaman itu cukup mahal. Kurang lebih lima puluh ribu dan itu bukan uang sedikit di pertengahan 90-an. Kebanyakan aku dibelikan karena dapat peringkat tiga besar hingga kelas empat sekolah dasar caturwulan kedua. 

Kalau peringkat pertama maka jatahnya tiga, dua jatahnya dua dan peringkat tiga jatahnya satu. Syukurnya peringkatku tidak tergeser di masa-masa itu sehingga akhir caturwulan berarti tambahan kaset Sega yang baru.  Di Pekanbaru juga teringat ada kios yang menyewakan kaset Sega di dekat Plaza Senapelan. Kalau hanya sewa seminggu tidak perlu menunggu peringkat tiga besar karena ayahku tidak perlu rogoh kocek terlalu dalam.

Setelahnya usus buntu dan mungkin karena paham aku akan menghabiskan waktu banyak di rumah, akhirnya dibelikan Playstation seri perdana. Dua gim pertama adalah Tekken III dan FIFA ‘99. Playstation adalah yang membuatku akhirnya malas keluar rumah. Pun tidak ada restriksi untuk hanya boleh memainkannya di akhir pekan seperti kebanyakan teman. Bebas-bebas saja asal ketika peringkat di luar tiga besar maka dihardik kurang tekun belajar dan terlalu banyak main gim. Tapi tetap tidak pernah ada restriksi bermain gim di rumah kami.

Ingatku, aku sempat begitu sukanya dengan RPG bermetode giliran (turn-based). Dipikir-pikir sekarang, kenapa pula bertarung harus giliran? Cukup main catur atau permainan papan lainnya. Tapi di masa itu, karena pengaruh beberapa teman “kutu gim”, berkenalan dengan Chrono Cross, Legend of Legaia dan Final Fantasy IX. Seingatku tidak ada yang sampai tamat.

Di masa Sega, gim begitu mahalnya karena tidak ada bajakan. Playstation cerita berbeda. Kasetku mungkin hampir dua ratusan. Lima puluh ribu untuk kaset Sega dapat satu, Playstation bisa sepuluh. Kalau ke Glodok atau Mangga Dua bisa lebih murah satuannya di lapak-lapak yang kadang bersebelahan dengan penjual kepingan film porno. Ide bermain di rental awalnya tidak pernah terlintas di masa itu. Akhirnya coba-coba karena diajak teman. Pernah sekali pulang main di rental lalu dimarahi ibuku karena baginya mubazir sudah punya di rumah masih ngerental. 

Winning Eleven adalah yang utama. Yang lain selingan saja belakangan. Sampai sekarang aku cukup mahir bermain gim bola karena tempaan masa itu. Gim-gim aksi sudut pandang orang ketiga jauh lebih menarik ketimbang orang pertama. Die Hard Trilogy bagiku adalah yang paling berkesan. Gran Turismo berkesan walau tidak membuatku gila otomotif. Metal Gear Solid sampai konsultasi ke teman bagaimana menaklukan Mantis. Driver, GTA versi awal dan banyak lagi. Gim tarung tidak terlalu menarik. Harvest Moon sampai dibeli buku panduannya.

Lalu kelas satu sekolah menengah pertama. Ayahku membawa komputer kantor ke rumah. Barangkali ada peremajaan sarana dan yang bekas boleh dibawa pulang. Pastinya itu barang milik negara dan tentunya hal tersebut melanggar hukum. Tapi siapa peduli.

Pentium kedua. Cukup kuat untuk memutar Championship Manager 3. Akhirnya ‘bersekutu dengan iblis’. Benar-benar buat lupa waktu bagi maniak bola. Karena komputer rumah cukup butut, barulah beranjak ke Football Manager yang butuh spesifikasi lebih mumpuni di kelas dua sekolah menengah atas. Libur panjang ya berarti lebih banyak begadang mengatur strategi bukannya nongkrong atau datang ke pensi-pensi. Mengamati biji-biji karambol dan membawa Palermo jadi juara Italia. Sungguh pintu masuk untuk menjadikan manusia yang tidak terlalu fungsional secara sosial.

Kembali ke konsol, Playstation seri kedua tidak pernah dimiliki. Memintanya juga segan. Di masa-masa SMA, pergi ke rental untuk mengasah ketangkasan bermain bola pakai jari jadi lumrah. Cabut pelajaran hingga jum’atan. Hanya di rental bisa mencicipi PS2 dan cuma main gim bola. Sampai kuliah juga begitu di rental sekitaran kampus. Kalau PS3 hanya di kosan teman.

PS2 dan PS3 terlewat begitu saja. Gim yang dimainkan hanyalah Football Manager yang selalu terpasang di komputer meja hingga jinjing dan Winning Eleven -belakangan jadi Pro Evolution Soccer- dari rental ke rental. Aku bukan lagi gamer dan sekadar penggemar bola yang cuma bisa main gim bola. Sempat beberapa seri Call of Duty di laptop tapi intinya Football Manager. Civilization yang diperkenalkan seorang kawan ternyata bukan duniaku. Gim yang murni strategi sungguh membosankan.

Januari 2018. Istriku mengizinkan membeli PS4. Akhirnya konsol di rumah bertambah setelah punya uang sendiri. Tapi tetap saja awalnya cuma main FIFA. Sudah lama bukan jadi gamer tapi pemain gim bola. Sampai akhirnya Red Dead Redemption 2.

Gim bajingan tengik yang sungguh sebuah mahakarya. Awalnya ragu apakah bakal dimainkan? Premis gim koboi yang terbayang ya tembak-tembakan semata. Ternyata dia adalah sebuah dunia terbuka yang membuat larut dan bisa melenakan dunia nyata. Bukankah lebih menarik berburu binatang-binatang langka di belantara selatan Amerika ketimbang hadir dalam konsinyering-konsinyering tak penting? Lebih membahagiakan berlaku sebagai pemburu hadiah (bounty hunter) dan mencari buruan sheriff setempat sambil berkuda ketimbang wisata ke alam terbuka. Sebuah wisata visual!

God of War, The Witcher III dan, tentu saja, GTA V. Gim-gim dunia terbuka memang sungguh resep untuk mengisolasi diri. PS4 menjadikanku jatuh cinta kembali pada konsol. Di awal pandemi, ketika banyak orang mengeluh tidak bisa ke mana-mana, PS4 sudah cukup. Lagipula siapa yang mau ke mana-mana kalau bisa main gim di rumah?

Akhirnya PS5 dengan televisi raksasa. Tentunya dengan izin ‘menteri keuangan’ atau istriku yang paham betul suaminya tidak punya hobi ‘macho’ seperti otomotif. Jadi biaya oportunitas untuk hobi mahal cukup dialihkan ke gim konsol. Sayangnya belum semua rumah produksi gim benar-benar melahirkan gim dengan kapasitas PS5. Rockstar entah kapan menjual GTA VI. Gim-gim Ubisoft seperti seri Assassin’s Creed belum lagi selevel dengan kreasi Rockstar. Maka, akhirnya, PS5 seringnya FIFA dan kembali Red Dead Redemption 2 dengan sentuhan kemampuan grafis generasi lanjut.

Akhirnya Nintendo Switch. Dulu karena sudah keburu Sega dan melompat ke Playstation, akhirnya fase 18 bit tidak terjamah lewat Super Nintendo. Tidak familiar sehingga tidak ada alasan untuk membelinya. Padahal di rumah sepupu sempat menikmati Donkey Kong. Tapi Nintendo Switch benar-benar mengembalikan konsol dengan isian permainan. Terkadang grafis tidak terlalu penting ketika narasi dibungkus dengan mekanika yang membuat jatuh cinta. Sebuah kemunduran buat berbagai gim Playstation yang hanya jual grafis dengan gameplay standar dan repetitif.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild adalah mahakarya lain sebuah gim dunia terbuka yang eksklusif hanya ada di Nintendo. Padahal sudah lama aku tidak bersentuhan dengan gim terlalu banyak fantasi. Tapi disain dunia yang dihadirkan terlalu membuat adiksi untuk sekadar dikelilingi. Lagipula, kapan lagi bisa menikmati gim-gim bagus sambil berak atau menunggu rapat dimulai? Nintendo mengembalikan gim video untuk mereka para Homo Ludens. Mereka yang suka bermain-main.

Meet Lulu Lola Antoinette, the new d&d character I’m making to replace my ranger who die horribly last session. It was the first time a character of mine has died, but I’m not too sad because it’s going to be so much fun inflicting Lulu on the surviving characters. She’s a college of whispers bard, with a charisma of 20 and an intelligence of 6. Oh, and she took Find Greater Steed as one of her magical secrets, so she has a winged horse called Mr Snowball who is significantly more intelligent than she is. I’m very excited to play her!

It’s been years since I’ve written any fanfiction but I cannot stop thinking about these two, haaaaalp me. There’s going to be a second installment, probably. Maybe.

“Find what you love and let it kill you”

This was the quote that echoed in Barry’s mind constantly. He still isn’t sure where it came from or who said it, but its presence in his life was all-encompassing. 

What did it mean? 

He loved science, that’s for sure. That’s why he applied to be part of the IPRE, the thought of being present for some of the biggest scientific discoveries in all of history made him so excited he forgot to breathe. This mission was dangerous and although they were only going to be gone for a couple of months, there still was a lot of risk involved. Surely he was willing to die for the cause. But is that what it means?

Barry was deep in thought over this, walking down the halls of the Institute, his red cloak swishing around his feet, when he heard giggling coming from in front of him. The sweet sounds of the laugh took him out of the moment. He looked up and suddenly forgot to breathe. In front of him were two elves, equal in beauty. They were obviously very close. One of them appeared to be telling an amusing story, a sly grin emerging from his face, and the other one had her head thrown back in laughter. She lost her footing and caught herself with one hand against the wall and the other grasping the first elf’s arm. 

“Damn, that’s good” she said, wiping a tear from her face. 

“Yeah, it’s fucking bizzare but Merle’s whole plant thing gives us a lot to work with when we’re in stuck together these next couple of months.” He stopped talking, noticing Barry staring at them. “I see you’re entranced by the Taaco Twins.”

Barry’s face flushes a deep red. “Oh, uh sorry, I just - “

He smiles and takes a step towards Barry. “No need to apologize, my man, we tend to have that effect on people. I see you’re in on the latest fashion,” he motions to the red robes all three of them are wearing, but the twins have added certain...flairs to them. His robe has been enchanted to have twinkling stars all over the fabric and where his butt is reads “Taako” in constellations. Her cloak was trimmed shorter, to knee length, and has red lace trim all over the edges. She turned her standard issue uniform into something unique and beautiful, just like her. 

Taako continues, “So you must be part of the mission as well. Taako’s the name and sizzling it up is my game.” 

Barry just blinks at that, unsure of what he means.

“I’m the chef, I make the food.” Barry responds with a small nod, his lips parting with a small “ah” in understanding. 

“I’m Lup,” the second elf says, stepping towards Barry with her arm outstretched going for a handshake. For a second Barry isn’t sure what to do and then walks towards her and shakes her hand. It’s cool to the touch but soft and her handshake is dominating and confident. He gets lost in her eyes for a second too long and doesn’t notice Lup sliding her other hand in his pocket to retrieve his wallet. When they finally let go, Barry clears his throat, about to introduce himself when Taako cuts him off. 

“Mr. Barold Bluejeans. What a fitting name.” The twins look down at Barry’s blue denim jeans and smirk. 

Barry’s eyebrows crinkle in confusion. “How did you know my -”

Taako waves his wallet in the air while Lup mischievously grins next to him. “Gotta keep better track of your stuff my man. Aww, Lulu look at his photo. How precious.” 

Barry walks up to him and snatches it out of his hand before Lup could see his terrible ID photo taken years ago, before he learned he had to comb his hair everyday. “Haha, nothing to see here. Wow, look at the time, we’d better get going to our orientation,” Barry looks down at his empty wrist and tries to walk past them when Lup steps in front of him, her eyes alight with amusement. 

“Now, Barold it can’t be that bad. Everyone hates their ID photos.” She peers down, trying to get a good look. Barry quickly puts the hand with the ID in it behind his back. 

“Surely not you, I can’t imagine there could ever be a bad photo of you.” Whoops. He was so focused on playing keep away that he wasn’t paying attention to filtering what he was saying.

“Aw, Barold, you flatter me.” Lup reaches up and caresses his face and before he knows it, Taako has come up behind him, snatches the ID once again, and deposits it into Lup’s other hand. “Wow, look at that hair. Did you even own a hairbrush, Barold?”

Barry sheepishly rubs the back of his neck. “I was just so focused on school, it’s kind of hard to think about brushing your hair when you’re trying to make scientific history, you know?”

“Not at all, Lup and I have made history several times over, all while being the hot pieces of ass we are.” The twins both laugh at that and move to either side of Barry, wrapping their arms around his shoulders. 

“Don’t worry, Barold,” Lup says while slipping his ID back into his hand. “We’ll make sure you look as hot as we do while you’re making scientific history here.”

“Almost. Almost as hot as we do.”

Summary: The Blood Crow Stories is an anthology series of horror stories. Each season we will tell a new, original story over the course of 20 episodes. Each season will have its own unique production and storytelling style.

Our first season highlights the story of the S.S. Utopia, a cruise ship in the early 1900's. Modern-day college student, Max, begins to do his thesis on the audio diaries of the passengers on the ship. What he doesn't expect are the horrors that are waiting for him among the tapes, and the true reason why the ship sank so mysteriously almost 100 years ago.

Our second season takes us out to the old western town of Blackchapel; a quiet mining community full of hardworking people. Sheriff Thomas has been married to his job for many years. However, when men start turning up dead, all in the same fashion, he sets out to learn about these murders plaguing not just his quiet town. There's a serial killer loose in the Old West.
