But Hannibal was Black 🤦🏾‍♂️ He was a moor from North Africa. I swear tah gawd they will white wash everyone but the devil “Hannibal Barca of Carthage was considered one of the greatest military minds of the ancient world, using his tactics to nearly bring Rome to its knees while the empire was at its peak as one of the most powerful in Western History. A recent History Channel documentary, Barbarians Rising covers the fall of Rome over 700 years of invasions, including Carthage. However, Atlanta Black Star reports that one major detail is a point of contention: Hannibal being Black. In the series, Hannibal is portrayed by Black British actor Nicholas Pinnock. He became a general at the age of 26 and managed to unite barbarian tribes to stop Rome’s imperial rise. His most iconic moment was leading war elephants across the Alps to attack Rome, but this sells him a bit short. There are several many military moments of genius beyond using elephants that reflect how close he came to taking down Rome, even if he ultimately failed. At this point, the question lies as to whether or not Hannibal was actually Black. The answer is possibly. Ancient Carthaginians are believed to be descended from Phoenician migrants from the kingdom of Tyre, in modern-day Lebanon. Not necessarily Black. However, these migrants did settle down in modern-day Tunisia, creating the empire of Carthage as we know it. We also have accounts of the Carthaginians interacting with native African tribesmen. In fact, Hannibal was known for enlisting many of them as mercenaries for his own armies and campaigns against Rome. However, what’s less clear is whether or not this actually means Carthaginians were Black, or intermingled with the natives at all. We have little scientific proof to work with, as much of Carthage has been destroyed and we don’t have any DNA evidence. But this is one of many examples of history becoming a battleground with regards to ethnicity. We do have proof that the roles of many people of African descent have been ignored and downplayed, due to the lack of black historians to provide input. So, is Hannibal Black? We’ll likely never know for sure| #Repost @ronniesidneyii https://www.instagram.com/p/BoVURVElu46/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=b3mgdspommbk
